Resolution Ceiling for Nintendo Switch 2 May Hit 1080p/1440p Without DLA

Unfortunately, we don’t know much about Nintendo Switch 2 yet. However, one thing we do know is that it will incorporate the T239 chipset, which significantly outperforms the Nvidia Tegra X1 and X1+ found in current handhelds. The use of Nvidia technologies is crucial at this point because the issue goes beyond just graphics. Nintendo, aiming to prolong the console’s lifespan, wants to leverage artificial intelligence technologies like DLSS.

However, according to emerging information, the company is avoiding spending money on DLA (Deep Learning Accelerator) that directly influences DLSS performance. For those unfamiliar, DLA, or Deep Learning Accelerator, is a specialized processor designed to help GPUs perform deep learning tasks more efficiently. It is particularly critical for enhancing the performance of DLSS. DLSS renders the game image at a lower resolution and then uses DLA to recreate the image at a higher resolution.

This allows games to be displayed at higher resolutions with higher frame rates. In summary, DLA transforms DLSS into a more efficient and powerful technology, delivering better image quality. Unfortunately, the alleged T234 chip that the company is rumored to use does not support this technology. This directly implies that the handheld will not be able to provide a 4K 60 FPS gaming experience. If the claims are accurate, without DLA, Nintendo Switch 2 will be limited to running games at 1080p or at best 1440p resolution.

Unfortunately, we currently lack more information on this matter. Perhaps the only thing we can do is wait for new leaks and the console expected to be unveiled in the first quarter of 2024.

The PlayStation 5 continues to be a massive success for Sony. According to market data up to August 2023, the PS5 was the top-selling console worldwide for that month, with approximately 1.395 million units sold. Following closely was the Nintendo Switch with sales of around 944,354 units for the month. To date, the Switch has reached over 129 million units sold, making it the third highest-selling console ever.

Of course, when we look at the third place, we see Microsoft’s popular consoles, the Xbox Series X and S. However, don’t be misled by this third position. Things are actually going quite well for Microsoft. The X and S models had their best sales month since their release in November 2020, selling about 431,629 units in August 2023. The main reason for this increase is attributed to affordable services like Game Pass and the recent addition of Starfield to the system.

In fourth place, we have yet another beloved product from Sony. The PlayStation 4 sold approximately 19,500 units in August. This marks the PS4’s lowest sales month since its release in November 2013. However, considering the console is no longer being produced and most consumers would rather spend their money on newer consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S instead of a decade-old product, this is quite expected.

Additionally, sales of the Nintendo Switch, currently in second place, are also anticipated to drop with the introduction of a new console.

The countdown has begun for the Nintendo Switch 2. Almost every day, new leaks about the highly anticipated handheld console are emerging. For example, we recently reported that the console’s SoC will use an NVIDIA Ampere GPU. Of course, an NVIDIA GPU means that DLSS technology will also be included in the Switch 2. However, according to the latest information, the upcoming handheld will feature a custom version of DLSS. Here are the details…

Will the Nintendo Switch 2’s Custom DLSS Live Up to Expectations?

If some of you are not aware, DLSS is a technology that uses AI to enhance both game performance and image quality. It accomplishes this by initially rendering the game at a lower resolution, then upscaling it to the native resolution through AI algorithms. This process can improve performance by up to twice as much without sacrificing the quality of the image.

Due to its functionality and the boost it provides to performance, there has been significant excitement around rumors that DLSS might be featured in the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. However, a recent information has both confirmed this technology on console and suggested that it may not meet all of our expectations.

Recently, Nintendo posted a new job listing, indicating that they are looking to hire a Data Engineer to assist with the integration of machine learning technologies on low-power embedded platforms. As you may know, DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) was a technology that was introduced to us with NVIDIA’s RTX 2000 series graphics cards. These cards have chips that do not face any space constraints. However, Nintendo has more limited space to integrate DLSS technology in their upcoming Switch 2.

What led us to make this inference is the sentence “optimization of machine learning models to fit power, memory and CPU budgets” found in the job listing. Of course, everything we’ve mentioned is purely speculative and based on assumptions. Nintendo could very well be using the familiar DLSS technology that we know from computers for the Switch 2. However, if that’s not the case and there is a custom DLSS, users should be prepared for a device that may not offer the performance they’re hoping for.

Rumors about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 are still swirling, and a new leak from a well-known tech YouTuber suggests that the console’s specs could be even more powerful than previously imagined. The leak, which comes from RedGamingTech, claims that the Switch 2 from Nintendo could be powered by a MediaTek processor with 2x Cortex-A4 cores, 2x Cortex-A720 cores, and 4x Cortex-A520 cores. 

Previously, the Switch 2 was rumored to feature a custom Nvidia Tegra T239 “Drake” processor. This would still be a huge upgrade over the OG Switch’s Tegra X1 SoC, but its specs are starting to become dated. The Tegra Orin chip family, which the T239 is based on, was released in 2018. If the Switch 2 is released in the second half of 2024, that would leave a six-year gap between console and SoC architecture.

So if the YouTuber’s claims are true, the MediaTek processor could be a significant upgrade over the Tegra X1 processor that powers the OG Switch, and it could potentially put the Switch 2 on par with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S in terms of performance.

The leak also claims that the Switch 2 GPU could have 12 to 16 streaming multiprocessors (SMs) based on newer Ada Lovelace microarchitecture. This would be even more powerful than the GPU in the Nvidia Jetson AGX Orin 32GB, which has 14 SMs with older-gen Ampere architecture. In addition to its powerful hardware, the Switch 2 is also rumored to have 12 to 16GB of RAM and Tegra X1 backwards compatibility. 

Of course, it’s important to take these rumors with a grain of salt. Nothing has been officially confirmed by Nintendo, and the Switch 2 is still a long way from release. However, if these rumors are true, the Switch 2 could be a major force in the gaming industry.

Nintendo Switch 2: What We Know So Far

According to information obtained by Video Games Chronicle, Nintendo will introduce the Switch 2 in the second quarter of 2024. It’s said that the reason the company is waiting so long is because it doesn’t want to be affected by the chip crisis that occurred during the pandemic. As you know, both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X were released during this time, and it became a real struggle for customers to buy these consoles. In fact, the market was dominated by “opportunists” for a long time, and scalping was very popular until recently.

However, not all developments may please users. As you know, Nintendo introduced the OLED version of the Switch in 2021. This version, which isn’t very different from the original product in terms of technical features, was preferred by many users due to its superior screen. But the latest information shows that the Nintendo Switch 2 may come with an LCD screen instead of OLED. Of course, the console will still be able to connect to other screens. Therefore, if you own a high-quality OLED monitor, you can always play games with a dock.

The good news is the backwards compatibility. The Nintendo Switch 2 will run your digital and physical games without any problems.
