In interesting news, Toyota is building its own game engine for the screens inside your car.

Toyota Connected North America, the subsidiary responsible for in-vehicle connectivity, has announced a new gaming engine called Fluorite. It’s designed specifically for automotive systems, where hardware is often less powerful than a typical smartphone or laptop.

What is Toyota’s Flourite engine?

Fluorite is written in C++ and is built to work closely with Google’s cross-platform UI framework, Flutter. That means developers can use Flutter’s Dart language and high-level APIs to build interactive experiences, including games and 3D interfaces, without needing heavy, traditional game engines.

According to Toyota, the engine is optimized to deliver strong performance even on low-end or embedded hardware. It also supports modern graphics APIs like Vulkan, which allows the system to get close to the device’s full hardware-accelerated performance. 

Fluorite also brings some developer-friendly features. It supports a hot reload system similar to Flutter, letting developers see changes within a few frames instead of waiting through long build times. The engine also supports model-based trigger areas, so artists can define touch or click interactions directly inside tools like Blender.

Why does Toyota need a game engine?

So why does a car company need its own game engine?

Toyota says the project started as an attempt to build 3D user interfaces for future vehicles. The team looked at established engines like Unity, but found them too heavy for embedded automotive systems. Licensing costs were also a concern. In the end, building a lightweight, in-house solution made more sense.

More importantly, Toyota is marketing Fluorite as a fully featured open-source engine. As a result, even if the automaker won’t work on games, it gives an opportunity to independent and enthusiast developers.

Toyota has finally unveiled its bZ3C and bZ3X electric SUVs at the Beijing Automotive Show. The two Toyota EVs are designed for younger drivers and families respectively. It will debut in China and Toyota shared some key specs of the two new EVs.

Last year, Toyota showcased the concept EVs during the Auto Shangai Exhibition and the company has made significant progress since then. The concept vehicles showcased then were called the bZ Sport Cross Concept (now bZ3C) and the bZ FlexSpace Concept (now bZ3X). Toyota says the models were designed for the Chinese market but little details were known about them before now. The bZ3C is designed for Gen Z drivers, while the bZ3X is family-oriented.

Toyota developed the bZ3C in partnership with BYD Toyota EV Technology, FAW, and Toyota’s Intelligent ElectroMobility (IEM) R&D Center Team. On the other hand, the bZ3X was based on a collaboration between Toyota, the GAC Group, GAC Toyota, and IEM.

The larger EV of the two is the bZ3X and comes with a more spacious cabin. Both new SUVs feature a panoramic sunroof, a digital dashboard, a large infotainment screen, and wireless charging pads for charging mobile devices on the go.

The Toyota bZ3C and bZ3X will feature advanced driver-assistance technology but the details of the drivetrains and several other parameters are still not known. Toyota did not release any launch date for the two new electric SUVs but the dynamics indicate an imminent launch.

The price optics of the new Toyota EVs have not been provided as well. Although the bZ3C and bZ3X were designed for the Chinese market, it is unclear whether the models will also be available in selected markets outside China.

It is one of the core areas that need a boost right now, so that more competition leads to lower EV prices, leading to wider adoption by the general public. Toyota is also planning to unveil the sixth generation of the iconic Supra sometime next year (or later), so that’ll be something to watch out for as well.

Toyota’s 2023 reports reveal the company’s continued dominance in the global automotive market. Despite already being the leader in 2022, the Japanese automotive giant increased its sales by 7.2% compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 11.23 million vehicle sales worldwide. Notably, Toyota’s bestsellers include the Corolla, RAV4, Camry, and Yaris models.

The intriguing part is that, unlike other competitors emphasizing electric vehicle production and sales, Toyota significantly trails. Out of the 11.23 million cars sold, only 3.42 million are hybrids, and the majority are traditional engine models. Electric vehicle sales constitute just 1% of the total, amounting to 104,000 units.

However, Toyota is expected to increase its focus on electric vehicles in the coming years and succeed in this area. Nevertheless, despite the shortage of EVs, the company’s success is tremendous. Taking a broader perspective, of the approximately 90 million cars sold globally in 2023, 11.23 million belonged to Toyota. This means that 1 out of every 8 cars sold was a Toyota.

Turning to the rankings, the German automotive powerhouse Volkswagen takes the second spot. Despite a commendable 12% increase in sales, the company managed to sell 9.2 million cars. It could have possibly secured the first position if it hadn’t lost market share to BYD in China.

Toyota’s chairman Akio Toyoda has claimed that there is still a future for internal combustion engines (ICE) even in the pursuit of reduced carbon emissions. The assertion by the Toyota Chairman is bound to draw attention from industry watchers and policymakers alike.

Toyota’s Chairman was speaking at a press conference at the Tokyo Auto Salon when he revealed that Toyota was developing next-generation ICE models that will play an important role in achieving a carbon-neutral environment. Mister Toyoda stated that there is still a role for ICEs as a practical means of achieving carbon neutrality and Toyota is thus refining engine technology. Even with the rapid development and deployment of battery-electric technology in modern cars, Toyoda feels engine technology development is a necessary step toward the future.

It is believed that Toyota’s next-generation vehicles will use advanced internal combustion engines beginning this year. Toyota says its development of cutting-edge engine technology will help safeguard Japan’s automotive sector which currently employs approximately 5.5 million people. Toyota has been showcasing various electric vehicle (EV) concepts in recent years, but it’s clear that their showrooms could benefit from an expanded range of electric cars. Currently, Toyota’s global EV lineup consists of the bZ4X SUV, the China-exclusive bZ3 sedan, and the Lexus RZ and UX 300e. However, a new addition to this lineup is in the works – an all-electric pickup truck that will be available in Thailand in limited numbers.

Toyota is also considering EV pickups for last-mile deliveries

The decision to trial the new EV pickup in Thailand is a strategic one, as pickup trucks account for nearly half of all vehicle sales in the country. Pras Ganesh, executive vice president of Toyota Daihatsu Engineering & Manufacturing, revealed that engineers are busy adapting Toyota’s electric pickups to suit local conditions. The first batch of these pickups will be deployed as taxis in Pattaya city in early 2024.

Toyota is also considering testing other EV pickups for last-mile delivery services. Furthermore, the company is enhancing its EV research and development capabilities in Thailand, one of its five global R&D centers.

While Ganesh didn’t specify which EV pickup will be tested in Thailand, there are two likely candidates. The first is the Hilux Revo BEV Concept, unveiled in Thailand last year, with no commercial sales date announced yet. The second option could be the IMV 0 concept, a new modular light commercial pickup that was described as “truly affordable and truly innovative.”

Launching an electric Hilux or IMV in Thailand would also help Toyota to compete with Chinese rivals such as BYD and Great Wall Motor. Furthermore, Toyota is considering Australia as another potential market for the electric Hilux.

As for the U.S. market, the Hilux Revo is unlikely to be available there since the ICE-powered Hilux is not sold in North America. However, Toyota recently revealed the production-ready EPU Concept at the Japan Mobility Show, which could potentially rival the Ford Maverick if it were to be launched in the U.S.

In simple terms, if the battery gets too hot, the car won’t perform well.

What’s really cool is how much thought Toyota’s putting into making this car a true sports car. It’s not just about going fast. They’re also focusing on keeping the car light but strong. They’re using a mix of materials like plastic reinforced with carbon fiber, aluminum, and steel to get the job done.

Although still wearing its signature vivid orange hue, the FT-Se offers significant visual tweaks. Its exterior now features enormous air intakes and door mirrors and handles, hinting at its functional orientation. The absence of any technical details keeps us guessing, but that might be part of Toyota’s strategy to build anticipation.

Interestingly, Toyota’s decision to showcase the FT-Se on a racetrack underlines their vision of a performance-focused EV. This is not just another electric car; this is a car aimed at creating an entirely new breed of sporty, electric vehicles. Equipped with a large fixed wing and a GR emblem, Toyota is essentially putting other automakers on notice—expect more than just green tech, expect exhilarating performance as well.

Stepping inside the FT-Se, one encounters a minimalist yet futuristic cabin. Gone are the plethora of knobs and dials we’re used to. Instead, the driver is welcomed by two smartphone-esque touchscreens, flanking a yoke-style steering wheel. It’s an almost sci-fi level of integration between the driver and the machine.

So, is the FT-Se just a pretty face or is it a sign of something much bigger? It’s still too early to make that call. While it’s tempting to see the FT-Se as a trendsetter for the next-generation MR2, it’s better to keep our expectations low. Yet, what’s certain is that Toyota is all set to make a statement in the sector of electric sports cars, merging its racing legacy with a futureproof plan.

Japanese car manufacturing giant Toyota is a household name in the ICE vehicle segment. The company had earlier filed a trademark application for the moniker “Land Hopper” in August this year but it was thought to be something else at the time. However, the company has now revealed that the land hopper is actually a three-wheeled electric personal mobility concept. call it an electric trike if you like but it is more of a moped than a motorcycle. If you love to have powerful electric mobility, then the Land Hopper may not be for you as it may not have the ferocious power you desire.

The Japanese automobile giant is yet to release much detail about the Land Hopper apart from a couple of teaser images. We expect more details to be revealed when it is unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show. What we know, though, is that the concept is a foldable three-wheeler which Toyota is propping as a last-mile vehicle that can easily fit in the trunk of your vehicle just like an e-scooter. This foldable feature reminds us of the iconic Honda Motocompo which recently got an electric version christened Honda Motocompacto. , something you can stow away inside your car or truck (perhaps your Land Cruiser) and use to perambulate about the premises once you’ve arrived.

In addition, the Toyota Land Hopper utilizes a leaning control design. The front has two wheels while it has a single wheel at the rear. The suspended seat has a shock-absorbing spring underneath which should make for a comfortable ride. Apart from these few details, we don’t have any more titbits about the three-wheeler. Toyota has finally revealed the Land Cruiser Se, a hushed debut that makes it the first all-electric vehicle in the Land Cruiser family. But there’s something very different about this electric SUV: it’s designed with the city in mind, rather than rugged terrains- a complete 180 from the OG Land Cruiser.

The vehicle’s low clearance indicates a city-centric design

It’s interesting to note that the company decided to reveal the Land Cruiser Se on a Friday night in the United States—a time generally reserved for news you’d rather sweep under the rug. What does Toyota want to say, or better yet, not say with this release timing?

One thing’s clear: this Land Cruiser aims to redefine what it means to be an electric SUV. Unlike its gas-guzzling predecessors, the Land Cruiser Se is putting a premium on smooth, battery-electric torque and noise-free city cruising. The monocoque design, touted for improved responsiveness, appears to be a departure from the hardy, off-road focus that the Land Cruiser name is known for.

Interestingly, this city-centric focus is further confirmed by the SUV’s specs. Measuring 202.0 inches in length, 78.0 inches in width, and 67.0 inches in height, its dimensions mirror those of the Grand Highlander. And if you look at the vehicle’s low-clearance and low-profile tires, you’d sooner imagine it tackling speed bumps in a mall parking lot than navigating through rocky terrain.

While Toyota has been really quiet regarding the details—no word on motor numbers, power, or battery size—it’s evident that the Land Cruiser Se is setting itself as an urban alternative in the electric SUV space. According to an unsourced report by Japan’s Best Car, Toyota is teaming up with Suzuki to develop a mini electric vehicle.

Suzuki sold a whopping 1.31 million non-electric units in 2022

Why Suzuki? Well, the small-car giant sold a whopping 1.31 million units in 2022, according to JATO Dynamics. That’s a huge customer base looking for a transition into electric. Notably, Suzuki previewed its first-ever EV, the eVX crossover concept, in January 2023, hinting at its electric ambitions.

Toyota, on its end, aims to produce 1.5 million battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) annually by 2026. But this time, instead of going big, it seems to be thinking small. The proposed mini EV is rumored to resemble the 145-inch long Toyota Aygo X, which is a hot seller in Europe.

Both companies have been cozying up for a while now. Last year, they declared an enhancement of their existing partnership in the development of compact electric vehicles. More recently, in May 2023, they announced a joint project focusing on a new EV platform for mini electric vans.

What’s the hint for the new vehicle’s concept name? A filing with the USPTO last week registered the name “FT-3e.” For those keeping score, “FT” stands for Future Toyota. Given Toyota’s history of using this prefix for concept vehicles, this mini electric might just be the future we’re looking at.

To add more fuel to the fire (or perhaps more electrons to the battery), Toyota has been privy about some of its 15 EV concepts it showed off last December. One of those was conspicuously labeled “small bZ electric crossover.” Is this a preview of the Toyota-Suzuki collaboration? Time will tell. However, this new model’s significance lies not just in mileage but in demonstrating that hydrogen fuel can be a rugged and reliable alternative.

What sets this model apart is the strategic placement of its hydrogen tanks, neatly fitted between the frame rails where the cabin usually resides. The battery sits at the back, and the rest of the fuel cell gizmos take the space generally reserved for combustion engines under the hood.

The project kicked off as a feasibility study in early 2022, and by June 2023, the first prototype was born. In a nod to Hilux’s legacy of toughness, Toyota plans rigorous tests focusing on safety, functionality, and durability for these 10 prototypes.

As global car manufacturers strive to stay afloat in the hurricane of Electric Transportation, Toyota Motor North America (Toyota and Lexus brands) reported a 7.1 percent increase in vehicle sales during the second quarter of 2023 in the United States, with a total of 568,962 units sold compared to the previous year. While Toyota experienced a 5 per cent growth, selling 487,802 vehicles in Q2, Lexus outperformed with a remarkable 22 percent increase, selling 81,160 vehicles. However, year-to-date figures indicate a slight decline in overall sales for both brands.

Companies are adding newer, more diverse models to their portfolios

In terms of electrified vehicles (xEVs), Toyota and Lexus displayed positive growth. The number of xEV models expanded to 24, and sales rose by 14 percent year-over-year to 151,825 units in Q2. xEVs accounted for 26 percent of the total volume so far this year, with sales reaching 270,476 units.

The surge in xEV sales can be attributed to all-electric vehicles (BEVs), which saw significant growth, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) experienced a slight decline of 3 percent. Toyota’s xEV sales reached 128,034 units, while Lexus achieved a noteworthy 103 percent increase with 23,791 units sold. The total xEV market share stood at 26.7 percent.

In Q2 2023, plug-in electric car sales showed a promising 27 percent year-over-year improvement, totalling 11,458 units, equivalent to 2.0 percent of the total volume. The growth in plug-in sales was primarily driven by a remarkable 745 percent surge in BEV sales, while PHEVs declined by 6 percent.

Leading the rechargeable models, the Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid remained the top-seller with 5,554 units, marking a 13 percent increase. The all-electric Toyota bZ4X secured the second position with 1,961 units, while the all-electric Lexus RZ 450e recorded 932 units. The hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) Toyota Mirai witnessed a positive growth of 64 percent, with 1,054 units sold.

Toyota’s plug-in car sales in 2023 show promise, particularly driven by the success of the Toyota RAV4 Prime and the introduction of all-electric models like the bZ4X and Lexus RZ 450e, indicating a growing interest in electrified vehicles among Toyota and Lexus customers in the United States.

Toyota plans to develop a simulated manual transmission on its future EVs to catch the attention of manual-tuned customers. The automaker is gradually transiting to sustainable automotive solutions and already has a growing EV lineup. The new electric vehicles will come with fake manual transmissions and may even simulate some manual transmission features.

The new drive by Toyota is indicative of the strong attachment customers still feel for manual transmission vehicles. It would allow drivers to simulate manual-based driving through a fake clutch that sends signals to the engine and create a feeling of switching gears. Toyota has already patented the technology for this feature in its new EVs.

A clutch pedal will be included in the EVs and will support downshifting as well. The driver can use the manual transmission module to slow down the vehicle instead of depressing the brake pedal. The new Toyota EVs will be able to provide jerks and stops for drivers who never learned to handle a manual car.

The cars will simulate the consequences of using the clutch poorly but won’t however stall ensuring safety as expected. The addition of the simulated manual architecture to future Toyota EVs is just for the fun of manual transmission enthusiasts. Drivers will have the option of disabling the fake manual transmission at any time.

Toyota has not made any official statement relating to the simulated manual transmission on future EVs. There are also no indications yet on the scheduled kick-off of the technology.

Toyota is jointly developing new mini electric vans with Suzuki. The two companies have also jointly developed a battery electric vehicle (BEV) system with Daihatsu Motor. The new BEV platform with be at the heart of a new generation of electric minivans. Toyota is gradually making inroads into the EV market with a raft of offerings and investments in that direction.

Toyota has made pointed efforts to accelerate development in its BEV strategy with its new CEO Koji Sato driving the process. The Japanese automaker plans to deliver ten new EVs by 2026 and a projected sales outlay of about 1.5 million units annually. Toyota had a less-than-expected reception for its first EV, the bZ4X, and expects to eclipse that with its new strategy. Toyota’s second EV, the bZ3 was released last month in China and was co-developed with BYD. There are several other EV models on the Toyota lineup including the bZ FlexSpace and an aerodynamic sports EV.

The new BEV platform is slated to come into operation by 2026 and this could see a significant increase in the range of Toyota EVs. The company claims the technology will double the range of future EVs with the use of highly efficient batteries. The three Japanese automakers, Toyota, Suzuki, and Daihatsu Motor will also deploy the BEV platform for new electric minivans. A prototype of the mini electric vans that implement the co-developed BEV platform will be on exhibition this week. The exhibition is being hosted by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association.

The electric minivans combine features from Toyota, Suzuki, and Daihatsu models. The cars reflect Suzuki’s and Daihatsu’s expertise in small-sized cars in combination with Toyota’s electrification technology. Toyota has unveiled its plans to enter the emerging electric pickup market with the Hilux Revo BEV. The Toyota Hilux BEV will be the automaker’s first electric pickup model. It is noted that Tesla, Ford, and Rivian are also making progress in this area. Indeed, the Tesla Cybertruck will be launched soon.

The Toyota Hilux BEV is a fully-electric pickup truck that was teased during the 60th-anniversary event of Toyota Motors Thailand division. It is likely that the Hilux Revo BEV could be launched in the Asian market first.

It is noted that a pickup truck was flashed during the unveiling of Toyota’s 30 EV concepts last year. The Hilux Revo is however seen on a stage, so has gone beyond a concept. The EV has low-profile tires and a solid wind over the truck’s rear.

The Hilux Revo BEV was unveiled by Toyota’s president, Akio Toyoda although pricing, release, and other details about the EV truck were not divulged. Toyoda also stated that complete and rapid electrification may not be the only path to sustainable transportation.

Toyota’s President also stressed that rapid electrification of the transportation system could potentially harm the system. This underscores Toyota’s pursuit of hybrid technology over the years. It has been at the forefront of hybrid and hydrogen vehicle technology for a while.

Toyota is also frontally pursuing development in the fully electric segment of the auto industry. It is reported that the company could soon thoroughly rejig its EV strategy to cope with current realities. This could see some of its hybrid concept vehicles transformed into electric models with an electric powertrain. Toyota has recalled 2,700 units of its first all-electric SUV just two months after its launch. The Toyota bZ4X SUVs were recalled due to the risk of their wheels possibly coming loose while driving. Toyota has already submitted the recall request to Japan’s Transportation Ministry.

The breakdown of the distribution of the mass-produced bZ4X SUVs slated for recall shows Europe as the destination for the bulk of the affected cars. Europe accounts for 2,200 of the vehicles, while 260 units were earmarked for the United States, 110 for Japan, and 10 units for Canada. The wheel issue also affected about 2,600 units of the Subaru Solterra, which was jointly developed by Subaru and Toyota.

Japan’s safety regulator had warned that sharp turns and sudden braking could result in the loosening of the hub bolts. This heightens the risk of a wheel coming off the vehicle. There are no reported actual accidents due to this observed flaw yet in Japan. Owners of the affected models were advised to stop using their vehicles until permanent repair measures were taken.

The 110 recalled units of the bZ4X in Japan were meant for test drives and display, according to Toyota. In an official statement, the company apologized for any inconvenience the recall might cause. Toyota says the 2,700 recalled units of the bZ4X are part of the overall number produced for the model. However, the company was silent on the total number of bZ4X already mass-produced. Toyota has already canceled the promotional test drives that were being carried out by KINTO.

Toyota has released more renders of the Compact Cruiser EV concept car. The Compact Cruiser EV is a small-sized off-road concept revealed jointly by Toyota and Lexus in Tokyo last year. The company is now providing some fantastic images of the car which has been getting rave reviews since its announcement.

The Compact Cruiser EV was nicked the 2022 Car Design Award for concept vehicles by Auto&Design Magazine. Toyota is further illuminating the concept car by publishing more photos, renders, and sketches of the concept. The Compact Cruiser EV was designed by Toyota Europe Design Development Center in Nice, France. It bears some characteristics of Toyota’s first-generation Land Cruiser combined with sprinklings from the FJ Cruiser.

The Compact Cruiser EV will likely come as an all-wheel-drive model. The LED lights, large skid plates, squared-off fenders, and sufficient ground clearance are some of the highlights of the Compact Cruiser EV. It also has a side-mounted ladder, and a bespoke roof rack, combining ruggedness with compactness. The images are quite illuminating but customers may be yearning for a baby Land Cruiser EV in the market. Toyota says the target customer base for the Compact Cruiser EV is urban dwellers with outdoor leisure interests. While key technical details are still lacking, the Compact Cruiser EV could transit to a production vehicle.

Autonomous ride-hailing service developments have been on the increase in the past few years across the world. The autonomous version of the expansive Toyota Sienna has been introduced as a ride-hailing test fleet conceptualized by Aurora Innovation. The autonomous Toyota Sienna models feature Toyota’s Vehicle Control Interface and the Sienna Autono-MaaS platform.

Aurora’s Sienna Autono-MaaS platform is the backbone for the new ride-hailing test fleet unveiled by Aurora. It was first introduced in prototype form in 2021 and it has undergone several improvements since then. The autonomous test fleet has been on selected Texas public roads so that the Aurora driver system could master the complexities that will be faced in real driving situations. The system is capable of reacting to various aspects of environmental and human uncertainty on the road. It is capable of detecting pedestrians, cyclists, and traffic lights, as well as weather conditions.

A test run of the system was carried out involving Toyota executives who were picked at their Texas facility and driven autonomously through a route that led to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Toyota has just launched a new vehicle in India. But this model is special for more than one reason. For starters, it was the Indian Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari that launched the new Mirai and that it runs on Hydrogen fuel cells.

The government official has unveiled the country’s first hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicle (FCEV). Alongside the Toyota Mirai, Nitin Gadkari also announced a new research and development project that will seek to investigate and analyze the feasibility of Hydrogen fuel cell based cars in India. The Japanese Automobile giant will be working with International Center for Automotive Technology (ICAT) to conduct the pilot study program in the region that will use Indian roads and climatic conditions.

For those unaware, the Mirai is currently a global product and is even considered as one of the most advanced vehicle of its kind. Notably, this also further showcases the official’s stance on renewable energy based transportation in the Indian automobile industry. The new generation of Toyota Mirai also promises to offer up to 30 percent more range along with improved handling than its previous iteration.

As per official claims, the car can deliver up to a 600 kilometer maximum range of a single full charge and can instantly be refilled similar to a gasoline powered car. This even cuts down on the refill time issue that many electric vehicles face. At the moment, the Indian government is looking for ways to decarbonize a range of sectors, and this includes the automobile industry. So, Hydrogen fuel cell based transportation systems might play an integral role in the low carbon energy plans of the nation.

The electric vehicle market in India is going to have some new competition as Maruti Suzuki-Toyota is working on an electric SUV which is expected to offer a range of up to 500 km.

Both the companies are working together to bring out this electric vehicle for the International as well as the domestic market. While the automakers are working on this project together, their variants will have a distinct design and styling.

According to an AutoCar India report, the Maruti Suzuki variant is codenamed YY8 and is said to sport a futuristic design and might look totally different from the auto maker’s existing ICE-powered cars.

For those who are unaware, both Toyota and Suzuki had signed up an MoU (memorandum of understanding) in 2017 aimed at co-developing electric vehicles for the Indian market. According to this agreement, Suzuki will produce EVs for the Indian market and will supply some to Toyota. While Toyota is expected to provide technical support for the electric models.

The new vehicle will be designed from scratch unlike the previous tried and tested method of fitting the ICE vehicle with an electric powertrain. According to reports, YY8 will be a 4.2-meter-long vehicle. Reports also mention that the car might have a 2,700mm wheelbase. The benefit of such a long wheelbase is that the company will be able to fix a bigger battery which further translates into a higher range.

The SUV will feature both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive variants. The two-wheel-drive variant is expected to be equipped with a 138hp motor and a 48kWh battery offering up to a 400 km of range in ideal conditions and the variant with four-wheel drive might come equipped with two-electric motors providing 170hp, a bigger 58 kWh battery, and up to 500 km range.

It is expected that the key features of Toyota’s e-SUV will remain the same but there will be a difference when it comes to the design of the vehicle. Moreover, the battery of this car is expected to be procured locally. According to reports, TDSG, a joint venture between Maruti-Suzuki, Denso, and Toshiba, is expected to manufacture these batteries in its Gujarat-based facility.

At the moment, it is not clear if Maruti Suzuki will introduce both variants in India, however, it is being reported that Toyota might launch both the two-wheel drive and the four-wheel-drive variants in India.

As it’s going to be Maruti’s first electric car in the Indian market the pricing will play a major role and the company will want to price it aggressively considering the Indian market scenario. According to reports, Maruti is expected to price this car in the range of Rs. 13-14 lakhs taking on the most popular Indian EV Tata Nexon.

Japanese automaker Toyota is on course in its pursuit of churning out 30 electric vehicle models by the turn of this decade. The company is making massive investments in EV technology and is gradually transiting its production facilities to EV plants in pursuit of its goals. Toyota plans to spend up to $17 billion in developing its capacity in electric vehicle manufacturing.

Toyota is ramping up its efforts across several fronts and pursuing a robust production schedule that will see it delivering 15 EVs by 2025 (the initial target) and going further to release 15 more EVs by 2030. The target also includes the production of 3.5 million EVs by 2030 for its global market. The Toyota Lexus brand will be transformed into an all-electric lineup by 2035 as part of the broad goals of the Japanese automaker.

Toyota was among the early pacesetters in the shift towards electric vehicles, but it lagged significantly, allowing Tesla and others to dictate the pace and hold substantial market shares globally. Toyota now intends to roll back the clock and position itself for the future of sustainability-oriented vehicles with varying levels of autonomous driving. Toyota had long held the view that the shift towards electric vehicles as an alternative to traditional automobiles was overhyped. However, the official view of the company on EV technology has seemingly changed as the company now says that it is pursuing EV production to reduce tailpipe emissions from its gas-powered automobiles.

No details were released about the lineup and features that will be present in the models. Toyota will be doing catchup even with several traditional carmakers like Honda, Nissan, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz among several others who had embraced EV production, with some having plans to transit to all-EV production within the next decade.

Toyota is making you pay to use features that are on your car. The company is moving to a paid monthly subscription pack, which starts with you paying to use the remote car start feature from the key fobs.

The new subscription format is from the Japanese automobile maker’s new Connected Services (Via TheVerge). This would have the company offers its customers the option to buy one of these new services after buying a new Toyota car. The service includes Remote Connect, which lets users remotely start their cars directly from the key fob. In other words, we might be seeing a shift in the automobile industry as ‘smart features’ could new be offered under new monthly subscription plans.

At the moment, the company is offering free trials of Remote Control, although, the length of that trial depends on the audio package that is included with the vehicle. To make matters more complicated, only a few Toyota models currently support the Audio Plus or Premium Audio packages that lets you access the free trial. But regardless, we can confirm that the subscription model is official with $8/month or $80/year plans. Notably, Tesla also offers a similar subscription offering with its paid OTA (Over the Air) upgrades allowing users to activate certain features that are already built into the car, but are locked behind a paywall.

This includes paying to enable “Rear Heated Seats.” Although, Tesla usually takes a one time payment for these features rather than having you pay monthly. So while this might not be common with vehicles right now, the future of smart cars with paid DLCs (Downloadable Content) might not be far off. Meaning, one day you’ll be paying the car company every month for small smart features that are already built into your cars. With automobile giant Toyota adopting this business model, we can soon expect other brands to also launch similar models with their upcoming smart cars as well.

Japanese automaker Toyota is collaborating with Chinese company BYD to build an electric vehicle that will be launched in 2022. The partnership between Toyota and BYD is seen as a move by the Japanese company to fast track its development of electric vehicle models in line with industry trends.

Toyota had pursued research on hybrid vehicles and hydrogen fuel cells in its future cars, but its progress has not been at par with the pace of evolution in the global EV market. Toyota presently has a few EV offerings in the market but the brand is miles away from the top and has a negligible market share in the fast-growing market.

It is understood that the Toyota-BYD partnership will see the release of a small and affordable electric sedan in China late next year, and the new electric car will come with a 200,000 yuan ($30,000) price tag. The partnership, according to Toyota, will see BYD providing the key technology that will yield a roomy car that is also affordable. It will be powered by BYD’s blade battery cells with the much improved LFP chemistry.

BYD is a fast-rising tech provider in the EV industry and its proprietary blade battery cells technology is attracting attention from the big hitters in the industry. The new Toyota-BYD electric car is rumored to be slightly bigger than the Toyota Corolla. There are still some key details that are still not available for the new Toyota electric car. It is unclear whether Toyota hopes to expand the availability of the car beyond China.

Both Toyota and BYD declined to comment on the news which emanated from inside sources.

Japanese automaker Toyota is unveiling its new e-scooter targeting users with limited mobility. The new Toyota C+walk three-wheeled electric scooter will be available in the company’s home market of Japan from next month, November 2021.

The new e-scooter bears some semblance with some other brands like the Segway PT, and it seems to be a successor to the Toyota Concept-i Walk from 2017. The Toyota C+walk comes with some features that would appeal to the elderly and others with limited mobility. It has a top speed of 6 miles per hour which can be reduced to 1 mph if needed. The range of the C+walk is 8.5 miles on a full charge. The removable battery makes it possible to double the range of the e-scooter with an additional battery. It takes about 2 hours to fully charge the battery.

Toyota conceptualized the C+way to help elderly workers move across large facilities like warehouses, factories, and airport terminals in a safe and efficient manner. The e-scooter also has an obstacle avoidance system, which beeps when it detects something on the path of the scooter. The obstacle avoidance system will slow down the scooter if a collision is imminent.

The Toyota C+way e-scooter is priced from ¥341,000 ($3,100). In Japan, outright purchase or lease arrangements are available from next month. Toyota is silent on the global availability and pricing of the C+way, although we expect more details to be provided as time goes on.

Apple is apparently in talks with another established automobile maker for the production of its self branded car. The company could strike a deal with Toyota to make the Apple Car, with production starting by 2024.

According to a DigiTimes report (Via MacRumors), representatives from the Cupertino based giant have apparently met up with South Korea’s SK Group and LG Electronics and are now looking at Japan’s Toyota as the next potential partner. For those unaware, the iPhone maker has been rumored to be working on its self branded car for a while now. But its a major shift from making consumer electronics to a whole vehicle, and thus, the brand is looking to partner with established firms  to get access to a new supply chain.

Interestingly, recent reports have also revealed that the company aims to develop its own EV batteries in the US that aims to “radically” reduce the cost of batteries and increase the range of the electric vehicle. Furthermore, the report also added that the company is aiming on starting production for its self branded Apple Car by the year 2024, which is in line with previous reports that stated the same year for production. Keep in mind that this is still an unconfirmed report so take it with a pinch of salt for now, and stay tuned for more updates.

TSMC is apparently planning on entering into joint ventures with certain Japanese companies, including Sony, Toyota, and Mitsubishi. The news arrives after a recent report surfaced that stated that the firm is planning on building a chip production plant in Japan.

According to a UDN report, the world’s largest contract chipmaker is rumored to be in talks to cooperate with Japanese tech giant Sony along with local automobile makers Toyota and Mitsubishi Electric as well. While the company has declined to comment on the matter as of right now, the report added that the firm is expected to focus on setting up a materials research and development center in Japan that could be completed within this year.

Taiwan’s media also reported that TSMC will be establishing joint ventures with Sony, Toyota, and Mitsubishi to build a factory in Japan. These joint ventures will apparently involve investments of up to 1.6 trillion Yen (roughly about 14.4 billion US Dollars). In our previous report, we had said that the chipmaker will be building its new production site in the Kumamoto Prefecture, which is also close to one of Sony’s plants. Similarly, we had also reported on the local government urging TSMC and Sony to build a 20nm chip production plant.

Furthermore, TSMC has stated that it is setting up a materials research and development center in Japan to expand the research of three dimensional chip materials. The company has already established a wholly owned subsidiary and has selected Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture for the location. On the other hand, its rumored joint venture will have Sony be responsible for land and the plant, while TSMC will provide the process technology to produce 20 to 40nm semiconductors for automobiles, machinery, and home appliances as well.
