Google is investing heavily in bridging the digital divide across the Pacific. Their $1 billion Pacific Connect initiative will see two new subsea cables laid, significantly improving connectivity between Japan, the US, and Pacific Island nations.

This expansion builds upon prior efforts announced in October 2023, which focused on connecting the US and Australia. The new cables will span from Japan to the US, strategically linking key locations like Hawaii, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).
Partnering with KDDI, ARTERIA, Citadel Pacific, and the CNMI, Google aims to boost the reliability and resilience of internet access across the region.
The cables are named Proa, referencing traditional Marianas canoes, and Taihei, meaning “peace” and “Pacific Ocean” in Japanese. Proa connects Japan to Guam via CNMI, while Taihei links Japan directly to Hawaii.
Google’s commitment goes further. They plan to extend their existing Taiwan-Philippines-US (TPU) cable to the CNMI and connect the Tabua cable (Australia-US via Fiji) to Hawaii. An additional interlink cable between Hawaii, Guam, and CNMI will further enhance network performance.
This project promises not just better internet access but also economic advantages. Google estimates their past decade of network investments in Japan contributed over $400 million to the GDP. Similar benefits, including job creation and skill development, are expected across the Pacific. Governor Palacios of the CNMI applauded the project, highlighting how the name “Proa” reflects “connectivity and cultural heritage,” aligning with their vision for a more connected Pacific.

While Google is slowly rolling out its Gemini AI on Pixel phones, two more brands are confirmed to integrate the LLM model into their smartphones later this year. HMD Global, the company that owns the license to produce Nokia-branded phones has recently refreshed three of its classic feature phones for 2024: the Nokia 6310, 5310, and 230. Redmi finally launched the performance-focused mid-range, the Redmi Turbo 3 in China yesterday. In the launch conference, while comparing their new phone with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered Honor 100 Pro the company accidentally mislabeled it as the “third generation Snapdragon 7”.

However, they quickly discovered their mistake, and the general manager of Redmi brand, Wang Teng apologized at the press conference for the mistake.
This type of incident isn’t happening for the first time though. According to ITHome, the recent Zhiji L6 press conference showed some similar event, where the official had to apologize to Xiaomi as they mentioned some incorrect information about the Xiaomi SU7.
It’s important to mention that there were various fake announcements pretending to be from Honor and urging Redmi official to apologize for their mistake. Honor’s product manager Wei Xiaolong informed that he was reached out by many people asking him to repeat the process. However, he only made a post on Weibo (a Chinese microblogging site) noting that it’s a very small matter and doesn’t require an apology.

Since full specs haven’t been revealed yet, this could change if the final price of the P1 lands above 15K.

A spatial feature of the phone is the “Leica Perspective Control,” which was previously only available on Leica cameras. Motorola seems ready to unveil two new wireless earbuds, allegedly called the Moto Buds and the Moto Buds+ in the market. The earbuds have been revealed in high-quality renders, courtesy of tipster Evan Blass.
While the leaked images don’t offer specifics regarding the earbuds’ features, they do showcase different color options for each model.
The Moto Buds are expected to come in four colors: two shades of blue (navy and a lighter hue), bright yellow, and a coral shade. The Moto Buds+, on the other hand, appears in a more limited palette of black and gold.

When it comes to design, the iQOO Z9 will look identical to the Turbo model. Both phones look as if they are stripped-down versions of the iQOO 12.
The iQOO Z9 Turbo is officially confirmed to feature the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip and a 6,000mAh battery. The brand confirmed that the device has recorded an AnTuTu score of 1,764,028 points.
The Z9 Turbo is also said to support 80W fast charging. As far as design is concerned, the device has a flat OLED display on the front and a rear panel similar to the iQOO 12 series. On April 15, Realme will unveil the Realme P1 5G and the Realme P1 Pro 5G smartphones in India. Today, the brand confirmed that it will also unveil the Realme Pad 2’s Wi-Fi-only variant alongside the P1 series on the said date.
