Xiaomi 14 vs Galaxy S24: Which compact flagship is for you?

Xiaomi‘s recent release of the Xiaomi 14 in India has us revisiting the compact flagship space. While the Xiaomi 14 initially seems like a compelling value, it’s important to see how it stacks up against the direct competition, particularly Samsung’s Galaxy S24.

Sure, neither phone is truly “compact” in the classic sense, but with displays hovering just above 6 inches, they’re delightfully manageable by modern standards. They also feature similar specs, though Xiaomi edges ahead in some areas. Notably, the Xiaomi 14 undercuts the  Galaxy S24’s starting price of ₹79,999 (~$960) with its own price of ₹69,999 (~$840).

These surface-level differences are just a starting point. The phones become even more distinct when you start to dive deeper into their respective display, designs, and camera arrays. So to make things easier for you, we are comparing some of the more relevant features of Xiaomi 14 and Samsung Galaxy S24 to show you how they stack against each other.

Compact Flagship Smartphones Compared: Xiaomi 14 vs Samsung Galaxy S24

1. The Duo Offers a Modern Compact Design

Both Xiaomi and Samsung adhere to established design principles within the flagship realm – glass builds, aluminum frames, and flat displays. Both devices also share an IP68 rating for excellent dust and water resistance.

However, there are meaningful differences you should be aware of. The Galaxy S24 employs the latest Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for front and back protection, while the Xiaomi 14 has first-gen Victus protection only on the front.

Samsung’s focus on compactness is evident with the Galaxy S24 as it has a slightly smaller footprint than the Xiaomi 14 (7.6mm thick, 168g vs. 8.2mm, 193g). So those seeking a more pocketable device may find the S24 more appealing.

2. Xiaomi 14 Edges in Performance and Battery

However, the compact form factor comes at a cost for the Galaxy S24 – a smaller 4000mAh battery compared to the Xiaomi 14’s 4610mAh cell. Additionally, the Xiaomi 14’s 90W wired charging significantly outpaces the Galaxy S24’s 25W solution. Both support wireless charging, with Xiaomi again taking the lead at 50W versus Samsung’s 15W. Xiaomi is also maintaining the consumer-friendly practice of including a charger in the box, unlike Samsung.

In the display department, both phones deliver high-end AMOLED panels with 120Hz LTPO adaptive refresh rates. They also support HDR10+ standard, with Xiaomi offering a higher resolution and Dolby Vision compatibility for consuming content.

Despite this, both displays promise vibrant colors and ample outdoor visibility, with Xiaomi claiming a slightly higher peak brightness (3000 nits vs. Samsung’s 2600). But in real-life scenarios, you should be able to see the display’s content easily in outdoors.

When it comes to performance, Xiaomi leverages Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset in the 14. While most Galaxy S24 models globally use Samsung’s in-house Exynos 2400 chip.

While benchmarks suggest comparable processing prowess of both the chips, real-world usage shows how these chips handle demanding games, sustained workloads, and thermal management. Historically, Snapdragon chips have often held a slight edge in efficiency and long-term performance consistency.

3. Galaxy S24 Excels in Software Support

Both the Xiaomi 14 and the Samsung Galaxy S24 boast impressive camera arrays on paper. Xiaomi 14 boasts three 50MP sensors (main, ultrawide, telephoto), with OIS on the main and telephoto. Samsung, meanwhile, uses a 50MP main with OIS, 10MP telephoto (also with OIS), and 12MP ultrawide.

However, it’s important to note that more megapixels doesn’t translate into better photos. Computational photography, powered by each phone’s image processing algorithms, will determine the true detail, dynamic range, and color rendition in various lighting scenarios. This is where individual reviews and side-by-side comparisons become vital for discerning potential buyers.

Software experience could also be a big deciding factor for buyers. Though both phones launch with Android 14, their user experiences will diverge significantly thanks to Xiaomi’s HyperOS and Samsung’s One UI 6.1 interfaces.

HyperOS is Xiaomi’s new UI that emphasizes personalization and granular control, while One UI has matured into a more polished and streamlined Android skin with a strong reputation for timely updates.

Samsung also pulls far ahead in the crucial area of software support. The Galaxy S24 comes with a remarkable 7 years of guaranteed updates (up to Android 21), while the Xiaomi 14 will receive 3 years of major Android upgrades and 4 years of security patches. This long-term commitment from Samsung makes the Galaxy S24 a compelling choice for users who prioritize a consistently updated and secure device well into the future.

4. Which to Choose: Xiaomi 14 or Samsung Galaxy S24?

The Xiaomi 14 and Samsung Galaxy S24 are both excellent compact flagships, but which one you should pick depends on your priorities. But here’s what we recommend.

For the most value, choose the Xiaomi 14. It has a bigger battery, significantly faster charging, and a lower price tag. The Galaxy S24 counters with a more compact design, superior long-term software updates, and potentially better camera performance, but you’ll pay extra for these perks.

Nubia Flip 5G: Everything You Need To Know Before Launch

Nubia recently revealed that it will launch a clamshell foldable smartphone next week. This device officially called Nubia Flip 5G will be unveiled on April 9 in China.

It will be the brand’s first foldable phone. But the product will not be new.

Based on the teasers and leaks, the handset is expected to be a rebranded ZTE Libero Flip. For the unaware, Nubia and Red Magic are subsidiaries of ZTE.

The Libero Flip is the group’s inaugural foldable smartphone. It was quietly unveiled in Japan in February.

It is currently the most affordable foldable phone on sale at just JPY 63,000 (~$415). The device could be even cheaper in China beating the Motorola Razr 40.

This could start a new trend of budget foldables in the coming years as a couple more (Energizer Ultimate U660S and Blackview Hero 10) are already confirmed to go on sale later this year.

These handsets arrive with downgraded specs compared to those that cost above $1,000. So what kind of specs can we expect from the Nubia Flip 5G? Let’s find out.

Nubia Flip 5G

Nubia Flip 5G Expected Specifications

1. Old Mid-range Chip

The Nubia Flip 5G will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 mobile platform. This very same chipset is also present inside almost a year-old Motorola Razr 40.

The chip was unveiled about two years ago in May 2022. It is slower than current-gen mid-range chipsets, let alone flagship chips.

It has an octa-core Kryo CPU and Adreno 662 GPU.  The CPU consists of 4 x ARM Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.4GHz and 4 x ARM Cortex-A510 cores run.

Anyways, a chipset alone does not define a product and this one is actually capable enough for normal day-to-day usage.

2. Small Cover Screen

The Nubia Flip 5G will sport a 6.9-inch main vertical foldable display. This centered punch hole panel will offer a resolution of 2790×1188 pixels.

The screen size as well as its resolution match those of premium clamshell foldables. We don’t have info on refresh rate but it will likely be 120Hz.

However, it will feature a small 1.43-inch circular cover screen. This tiny display can only show minimal widgets and can act as a viewfinder for the camera.

A small external display could be a dealbreaker for users who prefer using their foldable without even opening. On the other hand, it is a quality-of-life feature for someone on a digital detox.

3. Single Camera

The Nubia Flip 5G will house a dual camera setup on the rear. But only one of these sensors will be usable and that will be the primary 50MP snapper.

The secondary sensor will be merely a 2MP depth sensor. While on the front, it will sport a 16MP shooter.

Though the cameras are the same as on regular budget smartphones, the hinge can be adjusted between 60-110 degrees to click pictures and shoot videos in creative ways.

4. Decent Battery

The Nubia Flip 5G will be backed by a 4,310mAH battery. That’s respectable for a clamshell foldable which is thin at 7.3mm when unfolded.

The phone will carry support for 33W wired charging but will lack wireless charging support.

Tesla is Now Manufacturing Right-hand Drive EV Models for Potential Indian Exports

Tesla is revving its engines (well, revving its electric motors) as the company is planning to enter India, the world’s third-largest auto market. The company has started producing right-hand drive models at its Berlin Gigafactory in Germany, specifically designated for the Indian market. This hints at potential exports to India as early as this year.

A team from Tesla is expected to visit the potential factory locations later this month

An official announcement of Tesla’s Indian entry is still forthcoming, but their commitment seems strong. A team is expected to visit potential factory locations later this month, with an estimated investment of $2 billion USD (roughly 14.48 billion yuan) earmarked for the project.

Tesla Model Y

India’s recent policy change has played a significant role in attracting Tesla. The new policy offers reduced import taxes on certain electric vehicles, with the condition that manufacturers invest at least $500 million and establish production within three years. This policy change also allows overseas car companies to import up to 8,000 cars annually at a lower tax rate.

Tesla’s ambitions in India go beyond just exporting vehicles. They plan to invest in the country’s charging network infrastructure and source more components locally. Three southern Indian states – Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Gujarat (Prime Minister Modi’s home state) – are being considered as potential factory locations, with construction expected to take around two years.

Tesla’s move to enter India is a clear sign that the company wants to expand their presence in the Asian market, with India emerging as a crucial player. Their entry will be keenly observed, especially considering the recent policy changes and the growing demand for electric vehicles in India.

Xiaomi Unveils the P2 Dishwasher with Intelligent AI, Priced at 5999 Yuan ($830)

Xiaomi‘s Mijia P2 built-in dishwasher is finally hitting shelves on JD.com, priced at 5,999 yuan (around $830 USD). But consumers need to act fast – for the first 4 hours after launch on April 16th at 8:00 PM PST, interested customers can snag it for a discounted price of 5,499 yuan (around $760 USD).

The discounted price after launch will be 5499 Yuan, close to 760 USD

This versatile appliance is more than just a dishwasher – it’s a triple threat, functioning as a dishwasher, disinfection cabinet, and storage cabinet all in one. It boasts an intelligent washing program that automatically adjusts the amount of dishwashing liquid needed based on how dirty your dishes are. Plus, a single 450mL refill lasts for about 2 weeks.

Xiaomi Dishwasher

Here’s where things get impressive: the Mijia P2 utilizes 75°C high-temperature hot water washing to eliminate 99.9999% of bacteria and viruses from your tableware. And to ensure long-lasting germ protection, it features a 3-pronged drying technology: 115°C high-temperature hot air drying, automatic door opening and closing for additional drying, and residual temperature drying. This combination allows for safe storage of your dishes for up to 7 days.

Cleaning power is another strong suit. The P2 is equipped with innovative vortex spray technology, featuring three-layer spray arms with five levels of water jets. This ensures deep cleaning that reaches even the trickiest corners and crevices of your dishes. In fact, it can handle a whopping 16 sets of standard dishes and chopsticks, which translates to a total of 116 pieces of tableware in one wash. The bowl basket is also adjustable, allowing you to customize the internal space to fit dishes of various sizes.

For maximum convenience, the Mijia P2 offers three wash mode options: upper wash, lower wash, and full cavity wash. But that’s not all – it also boasts an optical turbidity sensor and an AI intelligent algorithm. This fancy tech duo apparently “detects the degree of dirt every 2 seconds, automatically selects the best washing program, and intelligently adjusts washing time and water consumption” for optimal cleaning efficiency.

Speaking of intelligence, the dishwasher seamlessly integrates with Xiaomi’s Mijia app and voice assistant Xiaoai for smart control. You can even set 24-hour washing reservations and enjoy the benefits of OTA online upgrades to keep your appliance up-to-date. Alongside the dishwasher, the company also launched an Air Conditioner and a Health Pot at affordable prices. Xiaomi seems to be committed to putting out a variety of tech, from smartphones to cars and dishwashers.

For added convenience, the kettle incorporates a wrapped mouth design to prevent accidental spills and scalding, and a cord storage base to keep countertops tidy. It also comes with a visual heating lamp that provides a clear indication of when the water is heating.

The Mijia Smart Electric Kettle S1 is part of the Mi Home ecosystem, which aims to simplify smart home integration. While details on smart functionalities are limited, Xiaomi’s focus on IoT technology suggests potential app integration for remote control or voice-activated boiling in the future. The kettle measures 220 mm in length, 150 mm in width, and 251.5 mm in height, with a net weight of 1.11 kg.

Samsung is reportedly gearing up to launch the Galaxy S24 FE. The release timeline of Samsung’s FE models has been a bit inconsistent since the beginning.

Launch dates of the FE models so far

  • Galaxy S20 FE – 2020, September 23
  • Galaxy S21 FE – 2022, January 04
  • Galaxy S22 FE – Doesn’t exist
  • Galaxy S23 FE – 2023, October 04
  • Galaxy S24 FE – Upcoming

Looking at the Galaxy S23 FE, it feels like the S24 FE may come towards the end of 2024.

However, Korean media The Elec now hints (based on some evidence) that Samsung may release the phone much earlier than we can expect.

A display component for the Galaxy S24 FE has already entered mass production

They reported that the display components for the Galaxy S24 FE such as the display driver IC (DDI) have already entered mass production. The production volume is reportedly in the millions. So we can expect a similar number of units on the shelves. It goes to show that Samsung is indeed taking its FE lineup seriously and expects the S24 FE to do well, based on their market research.

The outlet also notes that the Galaxy S24 FE is scheduled to be released on this summer.

The display driver IC (DDI) manufacturer Anapass mainly supply their product to Chinese smartphone makers. According to some reports, Anapass ranks first in market share in the T-con (timing controller) market for Samsung’s OLED displays.

The production volume of the S24 FE reported by the outlet is noted as “in the millions”, which is a bit vague. In comparison, they previously noted the same for the Galaxy S23 FE to be around three million.

Samsung to use Exynos 2500 on Galaxy Book and S25 series

Samsung’s next-generation Exynos processor is rumored to come in two different variants, each offering different cores. Exynos 2500 will be introduced in two different variants: 8-core and 10-core, each of which will be offered in different devices.

Samsung Exynos 2500 to be offered with 8-core and 10-core variants

Samsung did not introduce the Exynos chipset and instead used Snapdragon chipset in all regions with the S23 series. However, in the S24 series, Samsung introduced both Exynos 2400 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipsets. Samsung will also release a new Exynos chipset next year.

According to reports from the Twitter account “Connor/콘어/コナー,” Samsung plans to offer the 8-core variant of the Exynos 2500 in their smartphones, while the 10-core variant will be integrated into devices like the Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Book.

Additionally, the tipster suggests that the Exynos 2500 will feature a 4+4 core architecture, mirroring the Dimensity 9300 chipset. It is known that Samsung will use Snapdragon X Elite processor in its next-generation Galaxy Book, so the use of Exynos 2500 in the Galaxy Book is not a big surprise.

Furthermore, leaks indicate that the Exynos 2500 will leverage NPU chips, offering advanced AI capabilities. It’s also rumored to introduce a new component named “TPU,” alongside the existing G-NPU and S-NPU.

Oura Introduces Symptom Radar Experimental Feature To Take On The Galaxy Ring

Smart rings are expected to be the hottest consumer tech segment in the near future. There are already a few players in the market with Oura being the most popular. We have already learnt a host of details about the Samsung Galaxy Ring that is set to debut in the second half of the year. Now, Oura has announced that it is introducing new experimental features to its smart rings.

Oura rings get experimental feature

Our has launched a new Lab section in its app. This is where users can opt-in and out of the experimental features. Users can test them and give feedback. The lab section is only rolling out on iOS for now. The first feature is called Symptom Radar.

As the name suggests, Symptom Radar will detect any signs of physiological strain. It monitors biometric signals such as body temperature range, respiratory rate, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability. If the feature is enabled and there are any significant changes in these, users will be alerted and can enable Rest mode or lower their daily activity. The variations in symptoms will be shown as a notification under the Readiness Score. The company notes that rest mode prompts are generic whereas symptom radar prompts are more detailed and focussed.

Oura warns that the Symptom Radar is not a diagnostic tool and users should not rely on it for medical guidance. This feature in the Oura Lab could also be removed or changed in the future depending on user feedback.

Apple’s foldable iPhone further postponed, launch timeline now aligns with Galaxy Z Fold 9

News about foldable iPhones has been popping up every now and then, but there haven’t been many detailed reports about Apple launching one soon.

A recent report adds to this trend — those expecting a foldable iPhone from Apple may need to lower their expectations. According to a new report from DigiTimes, Apple has significantly pushed back its plans to enter the foldable smartphone market.

Based on information from South Korean sources, the report indicates that Apple has delayed the release of its first foldable iPhone from the fourth quarter of 2026 to the first quarter of 2027.

This delay means that the earliest we might see a foldable iPhone is around the same time as the potential release of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 9.

foldable iPhone

Samsung introduced its first foldable device back in 2019 and has matured the technology to the point where foldables can be used as daily devices.

Meanwhile, Apple has continuously delayed its launch plans, expressing concerns that the technology isn’t yet mature enough to meet its high standards. Lo and behold, this gives Samsung a bigger headroom to dominate in the foldable space.

Interestingly, Apple hasn’t changed its plans for component supply. Display providers like Samsung Display and LG Display are still set to deliver flexible displays for the foldable iPhone.

Moreover, it’s said that Apple has reassigned some of its personnel from the Vision Pro AR/VR headset project to work on the foldable iPhone.

Reports indicate that Apple is considering two possible designs for its foldable iPhone. One resembles a book, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold, with a 6-inch external screen and an 8-inch internal display. The other design is a clamshell-style foldable, akin to the Galaxy Z Flip series.

As for when or if Apple will actually launch its foldable device, that remains uncertain for now. However, it’s clear that the Cupertino-based company is actively working on the technology, which gives hope for its eventual release.
