Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 5 finally available for purchase in the US

Samsung‘s latest rugged tablet, the Galaxy Tab Active 5, is finally available for US customers following its initial January 2024 announcement. Designed with business needs in mind, this device surpasses its predecessor, the Galaxy Tab Active 4 Pro, in important areas.

The Galaxy Tab Active 5 is being offered in a special Enterprise Edition for US business customers. Pricing starts at $548.99 for the standard model, while a 5G version will retail for $659. These are pretty steep prices for a tablet, but you have to consider that it’s not for everyday use, it’s built to work in rough conditions.

Specifications

As aforementioned, the Galaxy Tab Active 5 is a tough tablet built for harsh environments. It’s MIL-STD-810H certified and comes with a protective case that can survive drops from 12 meters. It’s also dustproof, waterproof with an IP68 rating and scratch-resistant with the Gorilla Glass 5.

There is an 8-inch FHD display on the front with a 120Hz refresh rate. For photos, you get a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP selfie camera.

The performance side of things is handled by the Exynos 1380 chipset with 6GB/8GB RAM and 128GB/256GB storage. That latter is expandable via a microSD card. While Samsung has made a name for itself with timely software upgrades, the Tab Active 5 comes with older Android 12, though an upgrade is expected.

Keeping the lights on is a 5,050mAh battery, and there is a side fingerprint scanner for security. There is also a dedicated Active key on the side and connectivity features include dual SIM, 5G, pogo pin, USB-C, and Wi-Fi 6.

Three companies have reportedly suspended foldable phone projects: Tipster

Rumors are swirling that the foldable phone market, once hailed as the next major innovation in smartphones, may be facing some unexpected challenges. According to tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS), at least three major brands have halted or significantly delayed their foldable phone projects.

DCS reports that one of the top five smartphone manufacturers worldwide has completely suspended its foldable device efforts. Additionally, two more companies have put flip-style foldable phone projects on hold.

foldable phone project suspended

The reasons for these project suspensions are not clear yet, and the specific brands involved have not been disclosed by the tipster.

Currently, the foldable smartphone market is dominated by Android manufacturers. Samsung, for example, holds the largest market share and is reportedly working on its next iteration of Z-series foldable phones, including a triple-folding model.

Huawei is also said to be developing a triple-folding style phone. Oppo and Vivo are other major players, having released at least a couple of iterations of their foldable devices.

However, a recent report suggested that both Oppo and Vivo have decided to withdraw from the foldable market. The decision for this is said to be due to a significant decline in their market share in this segment last year.

However, there’s been no official statement from either brand, so it’s best to wait for further reports to understand the situation better.

If these rumors are true, it could also impact OnePlus’ foldable efforts, as they have been heavily relying on Oppo and have only launched one foldable device under their brand name.

In other news, Apple’s foldable iPhone project is also reportedly facing challenges due to fragile screen issues. While foldable phones offer unique form factors and possibilities, they remain expensive and some would argue, quite fragile.

Vivo Pad 3, and Pad 3 Pro leak reveals LCD display and top-tier chipsets

Vivo is reportedly gearing up for a big product launch in China soon, expected to reveal several new devices. Among the expected devices are the Vivo X Fold 3 series smartphones, the Vivo X100s smartphone, and the Vivo Pad 3 and Pad 3 Pro tablets.

Rumors about these upcoming releases have been circulating for a while. In a recent update, Digitial Chat Station shared some new information about the Vivo Pad 3 series tablets.

According to the tipster, the standard Vivo Pad 3 will feature an LCD screen and will run on the new Qualcomm SM8635 processor.

While the exact details of the processor remain somewhat elusive, judging by the codename, it’s likely to belong to Qualcomm’s 8-series chipset.

The tipster also previously leaked the core configuration of the SOC, revealing a 2.9GHz ARM Cortex X4 core paired with an Adreno 735 GPU. Impressively, the process was reportedly able to achieve an impressive AnTuTu score of 1.7 million which is what we’re used to seeing on Snapdragon 8-series SoCs. So earlier leaks have hinted it could be a lite version of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

On the other hand, the Vivo Pad 3 Pro is expected to sport a 3K resolution LCD display and will be powered by the Dimensity 9300 chipset.

Additionally, it’s been hinted that the Pad 3 Pro will support rapid 80W charging, while the Pad 3 may come with a slightly lower 66W charging capability (although there’s slightly less certainty on this detail).

A Vivo tablet with model number PA2473 recently grabbed China’s 3C certification with 66W charging. So the Vivo Pad 3 might indeed come with the 66W charging.

We’ll keep you posted with any further updates on the Vivo Pad 3 series tablets.

AI makes global semiconductor sales mark two-decade high

The global semiconductor sales rates are currently record-high. Recent information from WSTS indicates that global semiconductor sales have recently hit their highest levels in the past 20 years. In the fourth quarter of 2023, there was an 8.4% increase in global semiconductor component sales compared to the previous quarter and a notable 11.6% surge compared to the same quarter the previous year.

Semiconductor sales soar and AI is the reason behind it

The significant contributing factor to the upward trend in semiconductor sales is the prevalence of Artificial Intelligence. AI is now an integral part of our lives, and its use is becoming widespread across almost every sector. However, it’s important to note that the operation of AI-based software is quite resource hungry, leading companies to face challenges related to high memory bandwidth. The surge in sales of semiconductor devices, especially in storage, is attributed to the increase in storage chips.

Samsung managed to have a remarkable 49% increase in revenue compared to the same quarter the previous year, while SK hynix and Micron saw revenue spikes of 24.1% and 17.9%, respectively. During this period, the collective revenue of these three manufacturers surged by 33%. Notable performers in revenue growth during this period include MediaTek (17.7% increase), Qualcomm (14.2%), and NVIDIA (10.4%).

After a decline since 2021, global semiconductor sales rates experienced a significant upswing in the final quarter of 2023. The growing adoption of artificial intelligence is expected to further drive the increase in semiconductor sales. NVIDIA, the leading manufacturer of the most important artificial intelligence chips, has witnessed a substantial surge in its stock value as well.

Lenovo patents an ultrawide rollable display laptop concept

Imagine a laptop that transforms its screen from standard size to an ultra-wide screen whenever you need it. This futuristic concept is no longer just science fiction, thanks to a recent patent granted to Lenovo. This patent unveils a groundbreaking design for a laptop boasting a rollable display, potentially revolutionizing the way we work and consume content on the go.

Lenovo Ultrawide Rollable Laptop Patent

How does this work?

The core of this innovation lies in a flexible screen embedded within the laptop’s body. This screen consists of fixed and movable parts that can seamlessly extend and retract, adjusting the screen size based on your needs.

This isn’t the first time Lenovo has shown interest in rollable laptops. Last year at MWC, Lenovo already showcased a unique prototype laptop featuring a rollable OLED screen. The 13-inch rollable laptop offers a 12.7-inch display in its compact form, but it can expand vertically to a larger 15.3-inch size with the press of a button.

But why is this such a big deal? Well, traditional laptops, despite their undeniable portability, often suffer from limited-screen real estate. This can be a major pain point for multitaskers, creative professionals, or anyone who simply enjoys having more screen space. Lenovo’s rollable display technology addresses this issue head-on, offering a dynamic solution that adapts to your workflow.

The benefits go beyond just a bigger screen. Imagine using the extended display for side-by-side document editing, indulging in a cinematic movie experience, or even enjoying an expansive gaming world without compromising portability. The possibilities are truly endless.

Of course, this technology is still in its early stages. While rollable smartphones might hit the market sooner, foldable and rollable laptops present unique engineering challenges. However, the potential is undeniable. If Lenovo can overcome these hurdles and make these laptops accessible at reasonable prices, they could disrupt the traditional laptop market in a major way.

Lenovo also plans to unveil a transparent laptop concept at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (2024). Leaked images reveal a bezel-less display with the main components housed in a non-transparent base. The laptop appears to support a stylus and runs Windows 11. Key details like specs and release date remain unknown, but more information is expected at MWC.

From fold to roll: Samsung’s new rollable device spotted

When it comes to smartphone manufacturers, Samsung is the leading competitor in the world of foldable devices. The recently surfaced patent from Samsung reveals their work on a rollable display. The newest hybrid device from Samsung combines kind of both foldable and rollable characteristics.

Samsung is about to release a rollable tablet

The book-style foldable devices are among the most innovating mobile technologies today but they are not highly efficient. Foldable devices come with two different screens, external and internal, and you cannot use one screen while using the other. The presence of two screens partially makes the foldable devices unnecessarily thick.

According to a post shared by Calibre cleaning and @xleaks7 on Twitter, Samsung is working on a rollable device. In Samsung’s upcoming rollable device, there is only one display. When you prefer to use a larger display, you can simply slide the OLED panel kept hidden inside the device, eliminating the need for two separate displays to have a larger screen.

Samsung’s upcoming rollable device essentially resembles a tablet as it’s been revealed in the images. This rollable device is pretty much like an iPad mini alternative, a tablet that can fit in your pocket but have a huge display at the same time with the help of a slide mechanism added to enable you to use the device’s full potential.

What are your thoughts on foldable and rollable devices? Would you like to have a “rollable tablet”? While Chinese OEMs have been striving to reduce the thickness of foldable devices, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series still has a bulky design, maybe Samsung is preparing to introduce a device with a perfect rollable design to the market.
