Hands-on with Infinix Smart 8 HD: An exciting entry-level smartphone

On Dec.  8, Infinix unveiled the Infinix Smart 8 HD, an entry-level smartphone that packs a punch. It boasts a large display, a decent processor, and a long-lasting battery, making it a great option for anyone looking for a phone that won’t break the bank.

Infinix Smart 8 HD: Unboxing and First Impressions

Infinix Smart 8 HD

The Infinix Smart 8 HD’s retail package includes the phone itself, a charging cable, a power adapter, a protective case, and a SIM card ejector tool.

The Timer Green variant that I received from the brand has a turquoise appeal that reflects a golden shade when viewed from different angles. The phone itself is lightweight and comfortable to hold. Its back panel has a matte timber-textured finish that helps to prevent fingerprints and smudges. The edges of the device are flat, and, on the front, it has an LCD panel with a punch-hole design.

The edges of the Smart 8 HD are flat and have a slightly dark appeal, including the volume rocker, but the power button has a brighter look. The top edge is barren, the left edge has a SIM slot, and the bottom has a 3.5mm audio jack, a microphone, a USB-C port, and a speaker grille. The device has a thickness of 8.5mm and weighs 184 grams.

Display

The Infinix Smart 8 HD’s display is one of its best features. The 6.6″ IPS LCD panel is bright, vibrant, and offers good viewing angles. The resolution of 720 x 1612 pixels is not the highest, but it is still sufficient for most tasks. The screen also supports up to a 90-Hz refresh rate, which is a valuable addition to the device.

Infinix Smart 8 HD

There is a noticeable chin, which is expected as sub-Rs 10,000 are unlikely to have very slim bezels. One of the issues I frequently saw on some of the predecessor low-budget phones was that they showed a blue tint on the screen. The display is quite bright for indoor use; however, outside, it’s not the best, and you may need to find a shaded area or adjust the brightness settings for optimal visibility in outdoor conditions. L3 Widevine support on the Smart 8 HD means the smartphone can stream SD content, making it suitable for basic streaming needs.

Performance

The Smart 8 HD is powered by the Unisoc T606 processor, which is paired with 3 GB of RAM. In terms of performance, the phone appears smooth and offers ample 64 GB of UFS 2.2 storage. In addition, there is a microSD card slot for additional storage.

It runs on XOS 13-based Android 13 Go, which brings access to key features such as Memory Fusion (up to 3 GB of virtual RAM) and Magic Ring. As shown in one of the images below, the Magic Ring feature can show notifications for face unlock, background call, charging animation, charge complete reminder, and low battery reminder.

The Smart 8 HD has a 5,000mAh battery that promises a good battery life, and I was able to easily get around 1 to 1.5 days of use out of a single charge. The good thing is that it comes with a USB-C port for charging, not the obsolete microUSB port. The device supports 10W charging. The overall performance of the phone is quite high for an entry-level smartphone.

Camera and Other Features

The Infinix Smart 8 HD has a dual-camera system on the back, consisting of a 13-megapixel main camera, an AI lens, and a quad-LED flash. The camera system can take decent photos in well-lit conditions. The 8-megapixel front camera captures mediocre-quality shots. There is an LED flash available on the front that assists in brighter shots in low light.

The Smart 8 HD’s rear-facing single speaker with DTS Audio processing is best usable at 80 percent volume; at 100 percent, the distortion becomes a bit obvious. For security, the device is equipped with a side-facing fingerprint sensor, which is quite fast and responsive.

Overall Impression

Infinix Smart 8 HD
Infinix Smart 8 HD

The Infinix Smart 8 HD is a great budget-friendly smartphone that packs a lot of features into a sleek and stylish design. The phone has a large display, a decent processor, a long-lasting battery, and a good user experience thanks to features like Magic Ring. Another good thing about the Smart 8 HD is that despite being priced at around Rs 6,000, it manages to offer some important features like a USB-C and a fingerprint sensor. If you are looking for an entry-level smartphone that costs around Rs 6,000, the Smart 8 HD could be one of the better choices on the market.

WHERE TO BUY
Buy Infinix Smart 8 HD @ Flipkart

Price and availabilty

The infinix Smart 8 HD is priced at Rs 6,299 (~$75) in India via Flipkart, and with the 10 percent Axis Bank card discount, it can be bought for Rs 5,699 (~68).

Windows 12 is likely to debut in the second half of 2024 with AI-focused features

Microsoft is gearing up to launch a new version of Windows, tentatively codenamed “Hudson Valley,” potentially to be marketed as Windows 12. This new update, as per multiple sources, is expected to be released in the latter half of 2024 and is set to revolutionize the operating system with a strong focus on artificial intelligence (AI).

Windows 12

AI at the Core of Windows ‘Hudson Valley’

Early versions of Hudson Valley are currently undergoing testing in the Windows Insider Canary channel, with the RTM version slated for release in April 2024.

Hudson Valley’s primary focus is on enhancing the user experience through AI. Key features include an AI-driven Windows Shell and an “advanced co-pilot” Copilot AI assistant. This assistant is designed to operate continuously in the background, improving functions such as search, application launches, workflow management, and context understanding. AI will be deeply integrated across the operating system, requiring new NPU (Neural Processing Unit) hardware for optimal performance. Consequently, the hardware requirements for computers will increase significantly, potentially making older computers incompatible with some of the AI-focused features.

The assembly rate of AI PCs, equipped with NPUs, is expected to rise sharply, reaching 81% by 2027, according to IDC’s forecast. This indicates a trend towards mainstream adoption of AI in the PC market.

Recent updates in Windows 11, including the Copilot AI update and Background Removal in Paint, hint at Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to AI-powered improvements. Additionally, a new roadmap for Windows update cycles is reportedly in the works.

Besides the advanced Copilot, Hudson Valley is rumored to introduce AI-powered wallpapers with dynamic parallax effects and interaction capabilities, a Super Resolution feature enhancing image quality in photos, videos, and games, improved energy-saving mode, and a potential redesign of the desktop interface with the system tray positioned at the top. The final name and features of Hudson Valley are yet to be confirmed though.

China’s Huawei announces new 5nm Kirin 9006C chip despite US sanctions

Despite crippling US sanctions, Chinese tech giant Huawei has released a new 5nm chip, the Kirin 9006C SoC.  This development comes just months after Huawei unveiled its 7nm Kirin 9000S chip, used in the latest Mate 60 series smartphones.

Huawei 5nm Kirin 9006C chip

US sanctions have severely impacted China’s tech sector, particularly homegrown brands like Huawei, which were heavily dependent on American technology. These sanctions restrict access to crucial semiconductors and silicons from American giants like Qualcomm, impacting every China-based firm.

However, earlier this year, Huawei achieved a breakthrough with their 7nm ARM processor, the Kirin 9000S. The processor was manufactured by SMIC (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation) and powers the Huawei Mate 60, which smashed sales records in China.

While the Kirin 9000S doesn’t quite match the latest offerings from Qualcomm or MediaTek, it’s a far more advanced design than anyone expected SMIC to produce with its current hardware capabilities.

Huawei’s new 5nm chip: Kirin 9006C

This wasn’t just a one-off feat. The Kirin 9000S marked the beginning of a series of chips designed to defy the sanctions. Now, Huawei is pushing the boundaries even further with the release of the Kirin 9006C SoC.

The new processor boasts eight ARM CPU cores (four A77 and four A55) with a maximum clock speed of 3.13GHz. While the specs may not seem groundbreaking, the real highlight is its 5nm process node technology, which is a milestone achieved by Huawei despite US sanctions. The Kirin 9006C is expected to be manufactured by SMIC, just like the Kirin 9000S.

Currently, the Kirin 9006C can only be found in Huawei’s Qingyun L540 laptop. However, its potential extends far beyond. Rumors suggest that Huawei will be incorporating this powerful new 5nm Kirin chip in their upcoming P70 smartphone series, expected to be announced early next year.

Poco M6 5G incoming as a rebranded version of this Redmi phone

Poco is reportedly working on multiple smartphones, such as the Poco F6 series and the Poco X6 series, which are expected to include at least five models. In August, the brand unveiled the Poco M6 Pro 5G, and as per recent reports, it is working on the Poco M6 Pro, a 4G LTE device. Now, a new leak reveals the existence of a new device dubbed the Poco M6 5G. Here is a look at what to expect from the next M6-series phone.

Poco M6 5G could be a rebranded Redmi 13C 5G

Redmi recently unveiled the Redmi 13C and Redmi 13C 5G smartphones for different markets. The 5G variant of the device was recently rebranded as the Redmi 13R in the Chinese market. Now, a new leak claims it will also get rebadged as the Poco M6 5G in India.

In the above X post, tipster Kacper shared an image of what appears to be an MIUI code. It reveals that the upcoming Poco device, with model number 23128PC33I, will debut as the Poco M6 5G. The model number has an “I” at the end, which indicates that it is heading to the Indian market. No information is available on whether the Poco M6 5G will also be coming to other markets.

The leak does not say anything about the specifications of the Poco M6 5G. But considering that it will be a rebranded device, it should pack the same internals as the Redmi 13C 5G / Redmi 13R.

Apple shuts down Beeper Mini app for Android, citing security concerns

Apple has taken swift action to shut down the Beeper Mini app — a service that allowed Android users to access and send iMessage. This happened just a few days after Beeper launched the app on December 5th.

Beeper Mini: Apple Shuts Down App Bringing iMessage to Android

Beeper’s original app, now known as Beeper Cloud, worked by routing iMessage messages through a remote Mac computer. However, Beeper Mini took a different approach by connecting directly to Apple’s servers, bypassing Beeper’s own servers altogether.

Apple shuts down Beeper Mini Android app

This process even eliminated the need for Apple ID logins in the app, offering a seamless iMessage experience for Android users. Unsurprisingly, Apple wasn’t thrilled. Citing potential security risks like metadata exposure and spam, they shut down Beeper Mini.

Apple confirmed the shutdown in a statement saying, “At Apple, we build our products and services with industry-leading privacy and security technologies designed to give users control of their data and keep personal information safe. We took steps to protect our users by blocking techniques that exploit fake credentials in order to gain access to iMessage. These techniques posed significant risks to user security and privacy, including the potential for metadata exposure and enabling unwanted messages, spam, and phishing attacks. We will continue to make updates in the future to protect our users.”

Beeper, on the other hand, maintains that Beeper Mini is secure and offers better privacy than unencrypted SMS. The company has even offered to share its entire source code with a third party for independent security evaluation.

While Beeper Cloud remains operational, Beeper Mini is currently down. Beeper has deregistered all Android phone numbers on behalf of its users and has extended the free trial period by another week to compensate for the downtime.

Apple has also announced plans to introduce further security measures in the upcoming iOS 17.2 update, including iMessage Contact Key Verification.

Have a Look at the Upcoming Renault 5 E-Tech, Launching in 2024

Renault is looking to revive a classic with a modern twist in the upcoming 2024 Renault 5 E-Tech. This electric vehicle (EV) is not just a nod to the past but a leap into the future of urban mobility. As a replacement for the Zoe, the new Renault 5 E-Tech marries retro charm with contemporary technology, signaling a significant shift in Renault’s approach to electric vehicles.

The car is expected to be priced around $27,000 at launch

One of the standout features of the Renault 5 E-Tech is its design, which seamlessly integrates elements of the iconic original with modern EV aesthetics. The car sports a unique charge indicator light on the hood, dual charging ports, and a design that echoes the concept car while introducing practical changes like larger side mirrors and traditional door handles.

Renault

Beneath its nostalgic exterior lies a technological powerhouse. Unlike many EVs that ride on dedicated electric platforms, the Renault 5 E-Tech will utilize the Clio’s underpinnings, borrowing a significant portion of its hardware. This move not only keeps production costs in check but also ensures that the vehicle benefits from tried and tested engineering. Furthermore, the inclusion of a multi-link rear suspension is a rarity in this segment, promising sharper handling and a more engaging driving experience.

Range and affordability are key selling points for the Renault 5 E-Tech. With a 52.0-kilowatt-hour battery offering up to 249 miles (400 kilometers) of range, it meets the daily needs of most urban drivers. A more affordable version with a 40.0-kWh battery will follow, broadening its appeal. These batteries boast a higher energy density than those in the Zoe, ensuring a more efficient use of space.

Priced at about €25,000 (around $27,000), the Renault 5 E-Tech is set to be a competitive player in the EV market. It’s smaller in size, yet big on features and potential. As we await its grand reveal on February 26 at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show, the Renault 5 E-Tech stands as a testament to Renault’s vision of blending heritage with innovation, making electric mobility more accessible and appealing to a broader audience.

Customs seizes 300 hidden Switch games found in a wheelchair at Luohu Port

Recently, Luohu Customs in Shenzhen, China, encountered a unique smuggling attempt involving video game cards. The incident occurred at the Luohu port of entry, where a passenger using an electric wheelchair was selected for a routine inspection. This seemingly ordinary procedure led to an extraordinary discovery: the passenger had ingeniously concealed 300 Switch game cards in a compartment beneath the wheelchair seat.

Efficient Customs Vigilance Prevents Significant Smuggling of Popular Switch Games

This discovery is particularly notable due to its scale and the inventive method of concealment. The smuggled game cards primarily included titles like “It Takes Two” and “Sniper Elite 4.” “It Takes Two,” known for its critical acclaim, won the prestigious Best Game award at The Game Awards (TGA) in 2021. The strategic placement of these cards in the wheelchair compartment was a calculated effort to evade detection by customs officials.

The use of an electric wheelchair as a storage space for smuggling highlights the lengths to which individuals will go to bypass customs regulations. This incident is a stark reminder of the persistent and evolving challenges customs authorities face in their efforts to prevent smuggling. Smugglers continue to devise creative methods to transport prohibited or restricted goods, as well as items subject to legal taxation, across borders. A similar incident also happened recently in China, a man was caught smuggling 68 iPhones taped to his body, drawing attention from customs officers due to his peculiar walking.

Under Article 7 of the Regulations on Administrative Penalties of the People’s Republic of China Customs, smuggling activities such as concealing, disguising, or providing false information to evade customs supervision are illegal. These activities can include the transportation of goods that are prohibited, restricted, or subject to legal taxation obligations during entry or exit from the country.

In light of this incident, customs authorities have issued a public reminder about the legal consequences of smuggling. They emphasize that such actions are not only a violation of customs regulations but also undermine fair trade practices and can have broader economic impacts. The authorities remain vigilant and are continually updating their methods and technologies to combat these sophisticated smuggling techniques.
