IDC: boAt surges to second place in the wearables market for Q3, 2023, now only behind Apple

The global wearable device market experienced modest growth in the third quarter of 2023 (Q3 2023), according to a new report by the International Data Corporation (IDC). Shipments reached an all-time high for the third quarter, totaling 148.4 million units, representing a 2.6% increase year-over-year.

This positive trend is particularly noteworthy as it surpasses shipments in Q3 2021 (142.1 million) and Q3 2022 (144.6 million), which were driven by pandemic-related spending sprees.

Apple retained its position as the top wearable device vendor with 29.9 million units shipped in Q3 2023, securing a 20.2% market share. However, the company’s year-over-year growth declined by 26.7%.

Global Werable Shipment, Q3, 2023

Imagine Marketing, the parent company of the Indian audio and wearable brand boAt, emerged as the second-largest vendor in Q3 2023, capturing 9.6% of the market with 14.3 million shipments. This represents a significant growth of 19.4% year-over-year.

boAt’s success can be attributed to its focus on the Indian market, where it has established itself as a market leader with a vast range of affordable wearable devices. The company recently launched its “Smart Ring” priced Rs. 8,999 with essential health and fitness features, further expanding its portfolio and catering to the growing demand for smart rings.

Jitesh Ubrani, research manager, Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers at IDC says “Smart rings from newer brands such as Oura, Noise, boAT, Circular, and others are expected to jumpstart the new form factor in the coming quarters while also putting pressure on the incumbent brands to innovate on health tracking.”

On the other hand, Xiaomi secured the third position with 11.6 million units shipped, holding a 7.8% market share. The company witnessed the highest year-over-year growth among the top five vendors, with a 36.0% increase.

Samsung and Huawei followed with 10.7 million and 8.5 million units shipped, respectively, maintaining their positions in the top five. Samsung’s market share remained relatively stable at 7.2%, while Huawei experienced a slight decline to 5.9%.

The C67 5G will be the first 5G phone in the C series, and we can expect it to feature something like a Dimensity 6020 SoC. The most recent entry into the C series, the Realme C53 features a 6.74-inch LCD display with a 90Hz refresh rate and HD+ resolution. Although we don’t expect the display technology to improve, it could come with a Full HD+ panel instead. More details are expected to emerge in the coming days, so stay tuned.

HTC U23 Pro now comes in Misty Red color variant

It has been years since HTC has given up on the smartphone market. However, the brand continues to sell phones in a limited fashion in its home country Taiwan, and a select few markets.

Earlier this year, the company launched the HTC U23 and HTC U23 Pro. They are actually mid-rangers despite sounding like a couple of flagship smartphones.

Months after their initial debut, the brand has now released a new color variant for the ‘Pro’ model.

HTC U23 Pro gets a new ‘Misty Red’ color option in Taiwan. This version of the handset arrives in a single 8GB + 256GB memory configuration priced at TWD 15,490 (~$490).

There’s a limited-time launch offer for the new hue starting today until December 27. Customers purchasing the phone during this period will get a shockproof case and a wireless charger for free.

Feature-wise, the HTC U23 Pro has nothing special going for it, except for some tidbits like IP rating and wireless charging. It has the standard set of specs that you find on most devices in this range.

The smartphone sports a 6.7-inch centered punch-hole OLED display with an FHD+ resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset and boots Android 13.

The handset is equipped with a quad camera system on the rear comprising a 108MP primary sensor, an 8MP ultrawide unit, a 5MP macro snapper, and a 2MP depth sensor. On the front, it has a 32MP shooter for selfies and video calls.

The device is IP67-rated for dust and water resistance. It even has a MicroSD card slot, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a USB 3.0 port.

Last but not least, the phone is backed by a 4,600mAh battery with support for 30W wired charging, 15W wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging.
