Xbox Game Pass Ambition: Extending Services and First-Party Experiences to Nintendo, PlayStation

When it comes to their core strategies, Sony and Microsoft take different approaches. Sony focuses on creating exclusive games for PlayStation to boost console sales, while Microsoft’s Xbox aims to generate revenue through its Game Pass service. Microsoft plans to make Game Pass available on various platforms, including competitors’ consoles without exclusivity constraints. Here are the details…

Xbox Game Pass and Exclusive Titles to Embrace Nintendo and PlayStation

This information comes directly from Tim Stuart, the head of Xbox’s finance department, who mentioned during an event this week, “Our mission is to make Game Pass playable on any screen where you can play games. This plan certainly includes Nintendo Switch and PlayStation as well.” While Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, has hinted at similar intentions before, this is the first time an executive openly mentioned PlayStation by name.

However, Microsoft’s enthusiasm alone isn’t sufficient; cooperation from Sony and Nintendo is crucial, and that may prove challenging. Two main reasons contribute to this challenge. First, games from the Xbox Game Pass library are already available in services like PlayStation Plus and the digital stores of those platforms. This issue could potentially be resolved by allowing only Microsoft games to be included, ensuring console manufacturers don’t lose commissions.

The more significant challenge, though, is the reluctance of Sony and Nintendo to contribute to Microsoft’s profits. Even though Xbox may not approach competition as aggressively as before, its Asian competitors may not share the same sentiment. Consequently, they may hesitate to allow the Game Pass service, fearing it could bring millions of new subscribers and billions of dollars to their rivals.

It’s important to note that these discussions are speculative at this point. Only time will tell whether we will witness such a scenario unfolding in the future.

The New Action Button in iPhone 16 Series Revealed

Apple’s decision to replace the iconic mute/silent switch in the iPhone 15 Pro series with an Action button has stirred discussions among users. While this alteration presents various advantages, its practicality has become a subject of debate. Recent reports circulating in the tech sphere suggest that Apple is gearing up to introduce a revamped version of the Action button in its forthcoming iPhone 16 series. Here are the details…

iPhone 16 Upgraded Action Button with Innovations and User-Friendly Features

The Action button, a feature embedded in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, serves as a versatile tool enabling users to execute specific tasks, such as triggering the camera or activating the flashlight. Positioned as a small mechanical switch situated on the device’s right side, it’s a notable departure from the conventional mute/silent switch.

Apple iPhone 16

Rumors speculate that the overhauled Action button in the iPhone 16 series will bear semblance to the functionality of the Home button seen in earlier iPhone models. This revised button may potentially sport a larger design and incorporate touch-sensitive capabilities. Leaks and insider information hint that this redesigned Action button won’t be an exclusive feature but will extend across the entire lineup of the iPhone 16 series.

Multiple sources claim to have spotted the button in various iPhone 16 prototypes, with internal documents referring to it as “Atlas.” Apple’s motive behind this change appears to revolve around enhancing user experience. By making the Action button more intuitive and adaptable, the tech giant aims to cater to the preferences of users. Moreover, this strategic move could also serve to appeal to former iPhone users who favor a fully touch-sensitive screen experience, potentially widening the company’s customer base.

However, murmurs from earlier reports suggest a probable price hike in the upcoming iPhone 16 series. This increase in cost could be an attempt by Apple to maintain a balance and prevent a significant price disparity compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 15 series.

Meta exposes massive China-based networks on Social Media

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, disclosed its takedown of a vast network of over 4,700 fake accounts based in China. The sophisticated operation involved users posing as Americans, strategically spreading polarizing content related to US politics and US-China relations.

These accounts, detailed in Meta’s quarterly threat report, impersonated figures such as Nancy Pelosi, Gretchen Whitmer, Ron DeSantis, Matt Gaetz, and Jim Jordan. Strikingly, the network exhibited no ideological consistency, showcasing a blend of conflicting viewpoints on issues like abortion and US-China relations.

The company’s moderation rules explicitly prohibit “coordinated inauthentic behavior,” where groups of accounts collaborate using false identities to mislead users. The Chinese network was detected and halted by Meta before gaining traction among real users.

This disclosure follows Meta’s removal of five coordinated influence networks from China in the current year alone. The fake accounts, totaling 4,789, engaged in a campaign related to national politics and China, praising China, criticizing its critics, and mimicking real online posts by US politicians.

Ben Nimmo, Meta’s global threat intelligence lead, emphasized the importance of vigilance as foreign threat actors target people ahead of upcoming elections. In a briefing on Meta’s latest security report, Nimmo highlighted the deceptive online campaigns originating from China, issuing a specific warning about their intentions to influence the 2024 elections in the United States and beyond.

Notably, Meta tracked the source of these networks to China but did not explicitly attribute them to the Chinese government. The revelation underscores the evolving landscape of online influence operations, with foreign actors adapting strategies to leverage authentic political debates rather than creating entirely original content.

While Russia remains the most prolific source of such networks, with a focus on undermining support for its war against Ukraine, there has been a notable shift in Russian campaigns. Websites associated with Russia-based campaigns have redirected their focus to exploit the conflict between Hamas and Israel to tarnish the image of the United States.

As Meta continues to combat deceptive campaigns, the disclosure raises concerns about the potential pivot of influence operations as relations with China become a central election topic. With the intensification of election campaigns, there is an anticipation that foreign actors may leverage authentic debates to further their objectives.

In a broader context, the information presented in Meta’s security report highlights the persistent challenges social media platforms face in curbing coordinated inauthentic behavior and the potential impact on democratic processes globally.

Li Auto and Xpeng Lead November Surge in China’s Luxury EV Market

November marked a milestone for China‘s electric vehicle (EV) industry, particularly for luxury EV manufacturers Li Auto and Xpeng. Both companies not only surpassed their previous sales records but also set a new benchmark in the growing Chinese EV market.

Li Auto delivered over 41,000 cars in November alone

Li Auto, now a member of the Hang Seng Index, reported the delivery of 41,030 units in November, slightly edging past its October record. This achievement is a testament to the company’s consistent growth, marking its eighth consecutive month of record-breaking sales. The Beijing-based manufacturer has been riding high on the success of its luxury sport utility vehicles (SUVs), such as the L7, L8, and L9, all priced above 300,000 yuan. This pricing strategy positions Li Auto as a formidable competitor to Tesla, especially considering the strong demand for its new models.

On the other hand, Guangzhou-based Xpeng also showed impressive growth, delivering 20,041 vehicles in November. This number is marginally higher than its October figures, indicating steady progress. A significant contributor to Xpeng’s success is its new G6 SUV, which accounted for nearly half of its November deliveries.

However, the landscape of the Chinese EV market is not just about sales numbers. It’s also about the shifting preferences of Chinese consumers, particularly the middle class, who increasingly view battery-powered vehicles as the future of mobility. This shift is reflected in the growing market demand that both Li Auto and Xpeng are keen to capitalize on.

Interestingly, while Tesla remains a significant player in the Chinese market, it does not report monthly deliveries. However, CPCA data revealed a month-on-month decline in Tesla’s deliveries in October, a contrast to the Chinese manufacturers’ upward trajectory.

The Chinese EV market is also witnessing the entrance of new competitors, including tech giants like Xiaomi and Baidu, whose intelligent vehicles are starting to attract wealthy motorists. Additionally, Huawei‘s automotive venture, Aito, recorded a significant increase in November deliveries, emphasizing the increasing competition in the sector.

Navigating Troubles: The Hubble Telescope’s Technical Struggles with Gyroscopes and Safe Mode

NASA reported that the Hubble Space Telescope went into a safe mode on November 23rd due to an ongoing issue with its gyroscopes. The space agency is actively working to restart the telescope’s scientific operations. Despite this problem, the instruments of the Hubble remain steady, and it’s in good condition. Here are the details…

What Happen to the Hubble Telescope?

Launched in 1990, the Hubble has been exploring the universe for more than 33 years, playing a crucial role in enhancing our knowledge of space and supporting various space-related studies. According to NASA, the telescope entered safe mode automatically because one of its three gyroscopes provided inaccurate measurements. Gyroscopes are used to gauge the telescope’s rotation speed and position. During safe mode, scientific activities are paused while the telescope waits for new instructions from Earth.

NASA

Initially, the Hubble shifted to safe mode on November 19th. Although NASA’s team managed to restore operations the following day, an unstable gyroscope caused a halt in scientific activities again on November 21st. After a successful recovery, the Hubble re-entered safe mode on November 23rd.

Will the Hubble continue its mission?

NASA’s team is currently conducting tests to pinpoint the issue and find a solution. If necessary, they’ll adjust the spacecraft to function with a single gyroscope. During the final space shuttle servicing mission in 2009, six new gyroscopes were installed on the Hubble. Presently, three of these gyroscopes are still operational. While the Hubble ideally uses three gyroscopes for optimal efficiency, it can carry on with scientific observations using just one gyroscope if required.

NASA anticipates that, alongside other observatories like the James Webb Space Telescope, the Hubble will persist in making groundbreaking discoveries over the next decade and potentially longer, contributing significantly to scientific exploration during this time.

Back then, we had assumed that the Oppo Watch 4 was in the works, arriving soon after the Watch 4 Pro model was announced. But there’s a chance that it might have been the Watch 4X in reality. Furthermore, the model number has also pointed at the Watch 4X potentially being a rebranded OnePlus Watch 2.

For those unaware, the OnePlus Watch 2 is the company’s next generation wearable product, which carries the model number OPWWE231. This watch was sighted on the BIS platform. Unfortunately, finer details like design and specification regarding this device are still unclear. So stick around for more as we will be providing updates when additional information is available regarding the Oppo Watch 4X.

Shimizu’s Arma e-Scooter is a compact foldable Electric Scooter with a swappable battery

Japanese personal mobility company Shimizu has set a new standard in urban commuting with the launch of the Arma e-scooter. The new innovation product is touted as the world’s smallest and lightest folding electric scooter. The Arma weighs in at an astonishing 10 lbs (4.5 kg) and promises unparalleled convenience for city dwellers.

Shimizu Arma

The Shimizu Arma features a unique folding design with multiple joints. This innovation allows the scooter to be compacted to the size of a standard piece of printer paper, making it effortlessly portable. The entire folding process takes less than 30 seconds, transforming the Arma into a sleek and easily transportable case with a built-in handle.

Another standout feature of the new scooter is the swappable battery platform, addressing a common concern in the electric scooter market. Users can quickly replace a depleted battery with a fully charged one, extending the scooter’s range and eliminating the dreaded “range anxiety.”

The Arma’s estimated range is between 7 and 9 miles on a single 3.5-Ah 36-V lithium battery. The battery powers a 250-W motor. The e-scooter is capable of hitting a top speed of 14.9 mph (24 km/h), striking a balance between efficiency and safety for short-distance urban commuting.

Pricing & Availability

Shimizu has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the refinement of the second prototype, with testing scheduled for early 2024. Early backers can secure the Arma at a 40% discount off the estimated retail price, making it an enticing opportunity for those eager to embrace the future of urban mobility.
