Honor announces IPO Plans: Charts independent Course after leaving Huawei, dominates Q3 Handset market

In a significant move signaling its evolution post-separation from Huawei Technologies, Honor, the renowned handset maker, announced its preparation for an initial public offering (IPO). This strategic decision comes on the heels of the company’s sale by Huawei in 2020, a move prompted by U.S. sanctions that reshaped the technology landscape.

The IPO is viewed as the next pivotal step in Honor’s trajectory, building on the remarkable strides made in the past three years. During this period, Honor has not only solidified its market position but has also showcased robust performance indicators, particularly in China and Europe.

Honor, which refrained from specifying the IPO’s time frame or location, is making meticulous preparations to go public. The aim is to attract diverse capital and further strengthen its financial foundation for future endeavors.

In the third quarter of this year, Honor emerged as the leader in handset shipments in China, selling an impressive 11.8 million units and securing the top spot. Last year, it ranked as the second-largest seller in China and the fifth-largest brand by sales in Europe in Q3. The company’s market share in China stood at a formidable 18% during the same period.

Following its independence from Huawei, Honor has flourished under a consortium of over 30 agents and dealers. This shift allowed the company to operate autonomously, navigating the challenging tech landscape and expanding its global footprint.

The last three years have been transformative for Honor, marked by rapid strategic and business growth. Corporate governance and management improvements have propelled the company’s overall competitiveness, setting the stage for a successful IPO.

As part of its preparation steps, Honor is set to optimize its shareholding structure, inviting diversified capital that aligns with its future vision. The board composition will undergo gradual adjustments to meet the stringent standards expected of a listed company, emphasizing governance and regulatory compliance.

Celebrating its third-year anniversary post-independence, Honor has recorded nearly 200% sales growth in overseas markets. Counterpoint’s Q3 report underscores Honor’s remarkable growth in Europe, distinguishing itself as the only brand among the top five to achieve year-on-year growth. Domestically, in the highly competitive Chinese market, Honor claims the throne in the foldable market and commands a significant overall market share, according to the Q3 analyst report.

Huawei introduces the MatePad Pro 11” 2024 model: World’s first Tablet with Satellite Connectivity

Huawei has officially introduced the MatePad Pro 11″ 2024 model. The official listing on Huawei’s website reveals that this tablet has been integrated into China’s Beidou satellite product models, positioning it as the world’s first tablet to support satellite communications.

The launch event is scheduled for November 28th

Huawei MatePad Pro 11″ 2024

The MatePad Pro 11-inch 2024 model is able to utilize China’s Beidou satellite communication system. This capability will enable its users to send messages and share their locations even in areas with no network coverage.

Huawei’s implementation of the satellite communication system involves utilizing high-orbit satellites positioned up to 36,000 kilometers away. Remarkably, Huawei achieves this without the need for additional antennas. Instead, the company relies on sophisticated technologies, including high-gain algorithms and innovative communication protocols, to optimize the tablet’s communication experience.

One of the notable achievements is Huawei’s success in overcoming challenges related to power consumption and signal loss. Overcoming these technical complexities is a significant milestone for the company, as it ensures the MatePad Pro 11-inch 2024 model becomes the world’s first in this category all while maintaining power efficiency. Any other official details about the device are yet to surface.

The MatePad Pro 11-inch is set to join a lineup of Huawei devices equipped with similar satellite communication technology. Previously, models like the Huawei P60, Huawei P60 Pro, Mate 50 series, Mate X3, Mate X3 Pro, Mate Xs 2, and Nova 11 Ultra embraced this innovation.

Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, has emphasized the transformative potential of this technology. While acknowledging that satellite communication may not be an everyday necessity, he highlighted its significance by stating, “This function may not be used on a daily basis, but it can be used once in a lifetime and will last a lifetime.”

OnePlus 12 may feature a wood texture back, reminding of the OnePlus One

The OnePlus 12 5G is confirmed to launch in China on the 4th of December. Later, it may launch in the global market in January.

OnePlus has always had fun experimenting with different textures for the backs of its phones, and it appears like the OnePlus 12 has something special in store.

Now, the Digital Chat Station on Weibo suggests that there will be a variant of the next flagship smartphone with a wood grain texture on the back.

Perhaps the wood grain is the cause of the confusion; the image itself is unclear.

OnePlus 12 may feature a wood texture back, reminding of the OnePlus 1
OnePlus 12 may feature a wood texture back

We assume that OnePlus’s decision to switch to wood for the OnePlus 12 is a nod to the company’s debut model, the OnePlus One, for which it supplied wood texture covers and even detachable backs for select smartphones.

The device’s whole rear is unfortunately not visible in the picture. OnePlus 12 real-world images have surfaced; however, as of yet, no real-world image displaying the camera bump has been released.

It is anticipated that the camera array might include primary, periscope, and telephoto sensors. A Sony LYT-808 sensor, which is a variant of the OnePlus Open’s LYT-T808 camera, will serve as the primary camera, OnePlus announced.

It has also been reported that the secondary camera will be an optical image stabilization (OIS) equipped 64MP periscope zoom with a 1/2-inch sensor and an f/2.6 aperture.

As the OnePlus 12 moves closer to release, leaks and OnePlus themselves are providing us with more information on the device.

Global smartphone market shows signs of recovery in 2024: Canalys

The global smartphone market is showing signs of recovery in 2024, with shipments expected to drop only 5% year-over-year in 2023, according to a report by Canalys

This stabilization is attributed to regions like the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, which are expected to return to growth at 9%, 3%, and 2%, respectively, in 2023.

Despite the positive outlook, smartphone shipments still remain over 20% below their 2017 peak. However, there is a silver lining — consumers are now placing more value on their devices, with average selling prices now exceeding US$440 (~Rs 36,600) versus US$332 in 2017.

Emerging markets, particularly in the Asia Pacific region, are projected to be the primary catalysts for this growth, with 33% of all new smartphones in 2024 expected to be shipped to this region.

Canalys has predicted that smartphone shipments may grow 4% to reach 1.17 billion units in 2024. The global market is expected to ship 1.25 billion units in 2027, achieving a compound annual growth rate/CAGR (2023 to 2027) of 2.6%.

North America is the only region expected to experience a decline in smartphone shipments in 2024, with a projected 6% drop. All other key markets, including Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa, are forecast to grow by 6%, 7%, and 5%, respectively.

Google responds to user concerns over Pixel 8 Pro’s on screen impressions of inner components

Some Google Pixel 8 Pro owners have raised concerns regarding impressions from inner components on their device screens which look like circular bumps, prompting attention from Google. These bumps may result from components pressing against the soft underside of the OLED panel but are only visible in specific lighting conditions.

Pixel 8 Pro on screen impression of inner component

Google states that the impressions should have no impact on performance or durability

In response to user observations, Google released a statement acknowledging that “some users may see impressions from components in the device that look like small bumps.” However, the company reassures users that these impressions do not affect the Pixel 8 Pro’s performance or durability. According to a Google spokesperson, the new display on the device may show these impressions when the screen is turned off and not in use, particularly in specific lighting conditions.

The company suggests that the uneven surface on which the display rests might be a contributing factor to the impressions, and teardowns of the device support this possibility.

While the current reports indicate that the circular bumps are not affecting the device’s touch functionality or image quality, some Pixel 8 Pro owners express concerns about potential worsening over time. Google, in its statement, asserts that there is no functional impact and assures users that the original warranty remains valid for a year.

In response to the reported issue, some owners have reached out to Google for replacements. However, it’s noted that replacement devices may also contain the same circular bumps. This has led some users to call for an extended warranty to cover potential deterioration of the display over time.

Honor 90 GT to succeed Honor 80 GT, here’s when it will launch

In December 2022, Honor unveiled the Honor G80 GT phone in China after the Honor 80 series, which went official in November. The company is now reportedly working on the Honor 90 GT smartphone for the Chinese market. Here is when the next GT-series Honor phone will debut on the market.

A Chinese tipster revealed that Honor’s next GT-branded phone, dubbed the Honor 90 GT, will be unveiled by the end of December. Unfortunately, the leaker did not say anything about the specifications of the device.

To recall, the Honor 80 GT debuted as a flagship phone powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip. In fact, the device was similar to the Honor 80 Pro in some respects. Both smartphones featured the same chipset, battery, and charging capabilities. While the Honor 80 Pro featured a quad-curved 6.78-inch OLED panel, a 50-megapixel dual-selfie camera setup, and a 160-megapixel triple rear camera, the Honor 80 GT came with a flat display, a 16-megapixel front camera, and 54-megapixel triple rear cameras.

Honor 90 GT specifications: what to expect?

It is likely that the Honor 90 GT may borrow some of its specifications from the Honor 90 Pro. Likely, it will be equipped with a flat OLED display and a single front-facing camera instead of a curved-edge 6.78-inch OLED screen and a 50-megapixel dual front-facing camera setup. The device will run on Magic OS 7.2-based Android 13.

Like the Honor 90 Pro, the 90 GT is expected to feature the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset and a 5,000mAh battery with 90W charging support. There is a possibility that being a GT variant, the 90 GT’s top variant may offer 16 GB of LPDDR5x RAM and 1 TB of UFS 4.0 storage.

The specifications of the 90 GT mentioned in this post are based on assumptions. Therefore, it is advisable to approach this information with caution and consider it with a degree of scepticism.

Realme is also poised to unveil the Realme GT 5 Pro, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, in the coming week. Notably, the major announcement scheduled for next week will be the Redmi K70 series. The Xiaomi sub-brand officially confirmed today that the Redmi K70 series will be unveiled at 7 pm (local time) on November 29.

Redmi K70 lineup: What to expect?

Last year in December, Redmi unveiled three models, such as the Redmi K60e, the Redmi K60, and the Redmi K60 Pro. These devices came equipped with the Dimensity 8200-Ultra, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipsets, respectively.

The K60 series will be replaced by three models, such as the Redmi K70e, the Redmi K70, and the Redmi K70 Pro. These devices will feature the Dimensity 8300-Ultra, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipsets, respectively.

The entire specifications of the K70e are already known, but the details of the K70 and K70 Pro are still not clear. The Redmi K70e is expected to feature a 6.67-inch OLED 1.5K resolution display that offers a 120Hz refresh rate, up to 16 GB of LPDDR5x RAM, up to 1 TB of UFS 4.0 storage, a 5,500mAh battery with 90W charging, a 64-megapixel (main, with OIS) + 8-megapixel (ultra-wide) + 2-megapixel (macro) triple camera unit, a 16-megapixel front-facing camera, and a plastic frame.

The Redmi K70 and K70 Pro are expected to feature same-sized 120Hz OLED panels with higher 2K resolution support. Both models are expected to feature a 50-megapixel OmniVision camera with OIS support, a metallic frame, and 120W fast charging support. The K70 may pack a 5,000mAh battery, while the Pro edition could be equipped with a 5,120mAh battery. The entire lineup will run on Android 14 and HyperOS.

The Redmi K70 series is unlikely to be released in the global market. Instead, some of these devices may get rebranded as the Poco F6 series models in the global market. Likely, the F6 and F6 Pro that are expected to debut in Q1 2024 could be rebadged versions of the K70e and K70, respectively.
