iPhone 15 gets same 5G modem as iPhone 15 Pro, despite using older A16 Bionic chip

Although the Pro iPhones got a new chip this year, the baseline devices kept last year’s A16 chip. So many people might have guessed that Apple had simply recycled the motherboards from the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max to create the new standard models. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case.

According to iFixit’s Lead Teardown Technician Shahram Mokhtari, the iPhone 15 features a Qualcomm Snapdragon X70 modem. This is the same modem used in the iPhone 15 Pro, and it offers some noteworthy upgrades over the X65 modem used in the iPhone 14. The modem is said to be more power efficient and provides better signal acquisition over long distances.

iPhone 15 Snapdragon X70 5G modem

This means, Apple didn’t simply recycle the motherboard from the iPhone 14 Pro to create the iPhone 15. Instead, they redesigned and upgraded some of the internal components.

However, the iPhone 15’s internals are still very similar to the iPhone 14’s overall. iFixit gave the device a repairability score of 4 out of 10, because Apple often pairs parts with software components, making them difficult to repair.

With upgraded internals, the 15 and 15 Plus also support new features such as Roadside Assistance via Satellite and Crash Detection. They also share the latest Apple UWB chip with the 15 Pro and Pro Max, although the “Thread networking technology” for potentially upgraded integration with smart home devices remains exclusive to the A17 Pro-powered models.

iPhone 15 Pro Max sees notable performance and thermal improvements after iOS 17.0.3 update

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have been criticized for their poor thermal management and throttling under sustained load. But a new software update from Apple seems to have fixed these issues.

Apple released the iOS 17.0.3 update for new iPhones earlier this week. After testing the iPhone 15 Pro Max with this new iOS version, Chinese reviewer “Ah Zheng Is Very Hard” found that the phone’s performance and thermals have improved significantly.

For instance, the GPU score on Geekbench 6 increased from 27,163 on iOS 17.0.2 to 27,381 on iOS 17.0.3, while CPU scores largely remained the same. This may not seem like a big difference, but gaming performance has definitely improved.

Playing Honor of Kings on the iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 17.0.3 resulted in an average frame rate of 116.9 frames per second (FPS), while the same game yielded 105.4 FPS on iOS 17.0.2. Last year’s iPhone 14 Pro Max averages 103 FPS on iOS 17.0.3, for comparison.

Likewise, the phone’s temperature while playing the game also dropped around 1°C on the back and 0.6°C on the front. Other games, such as Genshin Impact and NiShuiHan, also ran cooler after the update, with temperature differences of over 2°C. However, the reviewer didn’t share the frame rate numbers for these two games.

Apple’s iOS 17.0.3 update seems to have improved the thermal management and performance of the iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max. If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, we certainly recommend updating to iOS 17.0.3 to enjoy the improved performance.

India Arrests Vivo’s CFO and Other Executives in $120 Million Money Laundering Case

Tech companies are often caught up in scandals, such as security flaws in their devices, smartphone batteries catching fire, or even car emissions controversies. However, Vivo, particularly its Indian division, is currently making headlines for a different reason. India’s financial crime agency has arrested four top Vivo India executives, including the Chief Financial Officer, over allegations of a massive $120 million money laundering scheme. Here are the details…

Vivo India CFO Arrested on Money Laundering Charges

Vivo India is accused of orchestrating a $120 million money laundering scheme. The Enforcement Directorate alleges that Vivo India siphoned this sum through shell companies and fake directors. As a result, the agency has arrested four top Vivo India executives and anyone else involved. Including Vivo India’s Chief Financial Officer.

Vivo India

The ED’s investigation traces back to July 2022 when they initiated raids across Vivo India’s offices and warehouses. These searches led to the confiscation of assets and cash valued at about $50 million. The scandal’s tentacles reach beyond Vivo. Also arrested in connection with the case was the Managing Director of Lava International.

Of course, all the details about the topic are not yet clear, and Vivo has not made an official statement about the scandal as of now. However, as soon as additional information emerges, we will inform you through Gizmochina. It is also worth noting that international companies often encounter issues in certain regions where they operate.

For instance, not long ago, Xiaomi was accused by the ED of making illegal remittances to foreign entities by disguising them as royalty payments. Financial schemes that are considered minor offenses in some countries can be seen as serious crimes in others, leading to these problems.

Huawei challenges Spain’s 5G Aid rules amidst rising tensions

Huawei Technologies, the Chinese telecommunications giant, has taken legal action against the Spanish government’s recent regulations, potentially excluding the company from receiving state aid in the development of 5G networks. Spain had committed a substantial sum of over €500 million ($527 million) to enhance rural 5G infrastructure. However, the government specified that suppliers deemed “high risk” would be barred from this aid.

Huawei’s Spanish unit swiftly filed an administrative appeal, vehemently arguing that the exclusion of certain suppliers contradicts legal standards, is disproportionate, and is seemingly driven by political motives.

According to the contentious rules, critical components of 5G networks, such as equipment, components, and associated software, should not be sourced from suppliers labeled as “high risk” by Spain. Additionally, operators who have already deployed 5G technology might face equipment replacement if their supplier falls under the high-risk category. However, the Economy Ministry, responsible for formulating these rules, has yet to finalize the list of banned suppliers, leaving the telecom industry in suspense.

Huawei contends that the regulations impede operators’ freedom to choose suppliers based on objective criteria encompassing commercial, technical, and security requirements. Instead, the company claims the rules attempt to exclude certain suppliers based on what it perceives as arbitrary political criteria.

This legal challenge unfolds against the backdrop of the European Commission’s mounting pressure on member states to phase out Huawei and ZTE Corp. equipment from their advanced mobile networks. The EU, citing security concerns, prohibited the use of these vendors’ equipment in its internal systems, intensifying scrutiny on nations relying heavily on Chinese equipment, including Germany and Spain.

As of December 2022, a report by Strand Consult revealed that 38% of Spain’s 5G network was supplied by a Chinese vendor, underscoring the significant stakes involved. This legal battle in Spain closely follows Huawei’s appeal in Portugal against a decision made by the country’s cybersecurity council, which forbids operators from utilizing Huawei’s equipment in the construction of 5G mobile networks.

The outcome of these legal challenges could significantly influence the future landscape of 5G development in Europe, as governments grapple with balancing technological advancements with national security concerns. The telecom industry and stakeholders eagerly await further developments, poised on the edge of a pivotal decision that could reshape the trajectory of 5G networks in these nations.

Samsung Electronics faces steep drop in Profits amid Chip glut

Samsung Electronics, the global tech giant, is set to announce an 80% drop in its operating profit for the third quarter of this year, down to $1.56 billion. This staggering decline is primarily attributed to the persistent chip glut affecting the company’s core business. Industry analysts had expected a downturn, but the extent of the losses has taken many by surprise.

Samsung is facing a significant setback in its chip division, historically the company’s most lucrative sector. The chip division is anticipated to report losses ranging from 3 trillion to 4 trillion won, primarily due to stagnant memory chip prices that failed to rebound as swiftly as anticipated. This slowdown in demand led to a surplus of chips in customer warehouses, prompting manufacturers to delay new purchases. Consequently, Samsung’s decision to curtail memory production further exacerbated the situation, impacting economies of scale and increasing chip manufacturing costs.

To counter the ongoing chip surplus, Samsung implemented production cuts earlier this year, reducing inventory and navigating through one of the most challenging periods the industry has faced in decades. However, this strategy has not been without consequences. The company’s profits have suffered due to decreased sales and increased production costs.

In the mobile devices segment, Samsung fared relatively better, posting an operating profit of approximately $2.2 billion for the third quarter. The introduction of foldable smartphones in the premium segment provided a silver lining amid the overall gloomy outlook for the smartphone market.

Despite these challenges, there are glimmers of hope on the horizon. Recently, Samsung secured a contract to supply memory chips to a major U.S. company specializing in data centers, hinting at a potential upswing in demand. Moreover, the company has been making progress in the computing accelerators market, utilizing the latest HBM memory technology. This advancement positions Samsung to capitalize on the burgeoning market for artificial intelligence systems, offering a ray of optimism amidst the current challenges.

Samsung Electronics is set to release its preliminary earnings report this week, providing a detailed overview of its performance during this turbulent period. As the industry watches closely, Samsung faces the daunting task of navigating through the chip surplus and adapting to market dynamics to restore its profitability in the coming quarters.

Other major companies are yet to join the NM Card development, but increasing sales of Huawei Smartphones will make them embrace the development sooner. Apart from the market demand, its complex design and dense storage units require advanced manufacturing technology are some other reasons that prevent the manufacturers from developing NM cards.

boAt and Noise Outshine Struggling Giants Samsung and Apple in H1 2023 TWS Market

The TWS (True Wireless Stereo) market landscape has seen some interesting shifts in the first half of 2023. According to Counterpoint’s TWS Hearables Market Tracker, the global TWS market has displayed resilience, despite challenging economic conditions and fluctuations in consumer demand for IT devices.

A standout trend has been the rise of affordable TWS earbuds, those priced under $50. In H1 2023, these cheaper earbuds enjoyed a whopping 15% growth in sales compared to the previous year. People in emerging markets, in particular, found these budget-friendly options very appealing.

Global TWS Market Share by Price Band
Global TWS Market Share by Price Band, H1 2023 vs H1 2022 (Retail Price-based)

On the flip side, big-name brands like Apple, Samsung, and Sony saw a drop in their TWS sales. The main reason? They didn’t release many new models. Consumers were looking for new features and value for money, which the affordable options delivered.

This shift wasn’t the same everywhere. Developed markets like North America and Europe, where TWS earbuds were already popular, saw a decrease in demand. But in places like India, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, there was a strong demand. In India, local brands like boAt, Boult Audio, and Noise did well with their budget-friendly models.

Specifications of Major Entry-level TWS Models

Even Chinese brands got in on the action. A Chinese brand called ZhengQibing saw an incredible 141% increase in sales in H1 2023 by offering earbuds with cool features for less than $20.

Global TWS Market Growth by Price Band, H1 2023 vs H1 2022 (Retail Price-based)
Global TWS Market Growth by Price Band, H1 2023 vs H1 2022 (Retail Price-based)

Meanwhile, major global players like Apple, Samsung, and Sony saw fewer people buying their earbuds because they didn’t come up with many new ideas, or affordable models. On the other hand, newer brands focused on making earbuds that looked good, had great sound, low delay, and long battery life, which attracted people looking for a good deal.

Looking ahead, the TWS market is expected to grow by 2% in terms of how many earbuds are sold in 2023. But the money made from selling them is predicted to drop by 3%. This growth in TWS earbuds is likely to continue until 2026, with about 36% of new smartphones getting bundled with earbuds.

PUBG Mobile & Honor of Kings brought in nearly $200 million for Tencent in September

In September, Tencent Games generated nearly 200 million US Dollars in revenue. The company brought in this massive figure from just two of its massively successful mobile games, namely Honor of King and PUBG Mobile.

PUBG Mobile and Honor of Kings are Tencent’s top grossing games

The news arrives from market research firm Appmagic. In a recent report, the firm found that Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile were the top grossing mobile games from the Chinese gaming giant, Tencent. The Honor of Kings was the highest grossing mobile game, while Scopely’s Monopoly Go took the second spot. PUBG Mobile took the third spot, with the three titles bringing in 115.8 million US Dollars, 87.95 million US Dollars, and 83.19 million US Dollars respectively.

PUBG Mobile

In other words, Tencent alone generated almost 200 million US Dollars with just two of its titles. For those unaware, Honor of Kings is a MOBA mobile game similar to DOTA 2 and League of Legends, while PUBG Mobile is a looter shooter battle royale. These are some of the most popular mobile games in the market, with the two games being especially popular in the Asian market.

Apart from these titles, HoYoverse’s Honkai: Star Rail retained its fifth spot in September 2023, but saw an 8 million US Dollar decrease over the previous month. On the other hand, Genshin Impact (another HoYoverse game) saw a 10 million US Dollar rise last month, making it rise to the seventh spot in the overall ranking. NetEase Games’ new Dunk City Dynasty is a new street basketball title, which generated 19.5 million US Dollars last month. This is a Chinese exclusive game at the moment, so it is clear that China is still a major market for these aforementioned games.

Here are the 7 Best Google Wear OS 4 Features

Wear OS 4 made its debut with the Galaxy Watch 6 series on July 26, and was later joined by Pixel Watch 2. Samsung and Google are the key OEMs that rolled out the Wear OS 4 for their respective smartwatches. Samsung wraps Wear OS 4 around its own One UI 5 Watch skin, while the vanilla OS is available on Pixel Watch 2.

Must See: Pixel Watch App 2.0 update brings Pixel Watch 2 and Wear OS 4 support

Precisely, One UI 5 Watch is now available for the Galaxy Watch 4 series, Galaxy Watch 5 Series, and Wear OS 4 for the Pixel Watch 2. The Pixel Watch which launched last year will get the update by the end of this year. Following the Samsung and Google collaboration, it has become easy for developers to create watch faces.

There are major changes that are part of the Wear OS 4 ranging from features to compatibility with apps. Below, we listed the feature additions to the new Wear OS 4:

Wear OS 4 Features

Dynamic Theming

Following the Material You dynamic theming on Pixel phones, the same is now part of the Wear OS 4. The UI automatically adjusts with the watch face colors. It is a major UI addition that will surely enhance the user experience.

Tiles

With Wear OS 4, Google introduced Tiles 1.2 which supports data bindings. It allows the user to get health data like heart Rate, Step Count, or time in a single tile. There’s also support for inbuilt animations in Tiles 1.2 for better transitions.

Cloud Backups and Restore

Allowing users to back up their smartwatch on Cloud backups and restore with a single click is a major advantage of Wear OS 4. The user can easily swap phones or watches without the need to reset the wearable.

Splash Screens

Wear OS 4 brings support for Splash Screens, which means users will see intuitive animations when the app starts.

New Apps

Wear OS 4 bundles support for several new apps and services. Primarily, Gmail and Google Calendar recently made it to the Wear OS 4. It also enhances the Home app integration by making controls more intuitive. Samsung’s Smart Things also received new features with the Wear OS 4. Improvements across several popular apps like Spotify enhance the user’s accessibility and usage.

Power Efficiency

Wear OS 4 tends to enhance power efficiency with optimal and optimized usage of available resources. The new Watch Face Format even aids in improved battery life. There’s an additional “power optimizations” feature that allows the apps to run more efficiently than the Wear OS 3.5.

One UI 5 Watch based on Wear OS Features

On the top of Wear OS 4, Samsung has added some of its own luxuries to One UI 5 Watch skin. It brings irregular Heart Rate notifications, ECG support, Improved Sleep Insights UI, and Enhanced Sleep Coach. Furthermore, there’s the addition of a new fall detection feature which works in sync with the enhanced SOS feature.

Technically, One UI 5 Watch isn’t fully Wear OS 4, but the upcoming One UI 5.1 Watch will be purely based on Wear OS 4.

Apart from the new features, there are three new Wear OS apps that come along with the One UI 5 Watch – WhatsApp, ThermoCheck, and Samsung Wallet App.

Now, the company’s upcoming offering has been spotted in official-looking images revealing its design as well as color options.

OPPO Find N3 spotted in official-looking image

The official-looking posters reveal the OPPO Find N3 in Green, Gold, and Black color options. The design of the upcoming offering is similar to the leaked renders of the OnePlus Open. There is a speaker grille on the top side and the volume rocker and power buttons are located on the right edge. The primary exterior screen has thin bezels around the display.

Vivo Y78 (t1), Vivo Y78m (t1) launched with downgraded chip and display

Vivo has quietly released two new budget smartphones in China. They are officially called Vivo Y78 (t1) and Vivo Y78m (t1).

For the unaware, Vivo t1 edition phones are basically the same as the original models but with a different chipset. Historically, these devices have had downgraded chips and that’s the case with these latest products as well.

The Vivo Y78 and the Vivo Y78m were originally launched in China in May and August, respectively. These two handsets are one and the same offered in different colors at the same price.

Also, the Y78m is only sold in a single 12GB + 256GB variant. Whereas, the Y78 also comes in 8GB + 128GB and 8GB + 256GB versions.

Now, months later, the brand has debuted the t1 edition of these phones. The newer models again share everything, except colors. In fact, they only come in a single 12GB + 256GB memory configuration this time around priced at ¥1,999.

But the latest handsets provide downgraded specs compared to the originals. They arrive with a much less powerful chip and a slower display.

The original Vivo Y78 and Vivo Y78m are powered by MediaTek Dimensity 7020 SoC, which was previously known as Dimensity 930. Further, their 6.64-inch centered punch-hole LCD screen can switch between 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz refresh rates.

But the newer Vivo Y78 (t1) and Vivo Y78m (t1) house a much older and less powerful MediaTek Dimensity 6020 (commonly known as Dimensity 700) chipset. On top of that, Vivo has limited the refresh rate of the display to standard 60Hz.

In other words, it’s better to avoid these t1 editions. But the original models seem to be discontinued. Because the Vivo Y78m is already out of stock and though the Vivo Y78 is still available for purchase, the brand might not restock it.
