Redmi Note global series sales surpass 338 million units

The Redmi Note series can be called the bread and butter of Xiaomi’s smartphone business. The smartphones in the Note series get a lot of consumer attention every year and it is evident by the sales figure. Xiaomi announced back in March that Redmi Note series global sales numbers have exceeded 320 million. However, the newly revealed sales figures point to a rather slow growth.

During the Redmi Note 13 series launch event in China today, Xiaomi revealed global sales figures for the Redmi Note series have exceeded 338 million units. This is not as impressive as what we’ve seen in the past few years. For instance, Xiaomi revealed that it had sold over 300 million units in December 2022 and later updated this number to 320 million in March. It’s been over 5 months from March and the company managed to sell 18 million more units.

Google releases Android 14 QPR1 Beta 1 for Pixel devices

Google has surprisingly released the first beta for Android 14 QPR1, even though the stable Android 14 update is not yet available. If you’re not aware, QPR stands for Quarterly Platform Release, and these updates are usually released after Google launches a major OS update. However, in this case, Google has released the QPR1 update even before releasing Android 14.

Android 14 QPR1 Update

Now, as Google has released it, it should see a stable release (since QPR is also a beta update) three months after its rollout. This means, that the stable version of this update will likely arrive as a December 2023 Pixel Feature Drop.

Anyway, the update is now rolling out to eligible Pixel devices that are still enrolled in the beta program. If you’re not enrolled in beta and want to update to Android 14 QPR1 Beta 1, you can do so by navigating to Settings > System > System update and tapping on Check for update to see if the new version is available. If it’s not, you can also use Google’s Android Flash Tool to manually sideload the OTA or flash the factory images.

Here are the issues that are resolved in this release:

  • Fixed an issue where the system UI sometimes crashed after notifications were posted or interacted with.
  • Fixed an issue that caused devices to crash in some cases.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the recording view to freeze while recording video.
  • Fixed an issue where a device sometimes couldn’t be interacted with after rebooting.
  • Fixed an issue where device alarms were sometimes reset after installing a system update.

These are the Pixel devices that are eligible for the Android 14 QPR1 beta:

Notably, the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 are not eligible for this update. These devices are still expected to receive Android 14, but it seems that’ll be the end of the road for these phones. The Pixel 5 is set to officially receive its last update in October, while the Pixel 4a 5G will live on until November.

Xbox Handheld console in the works; court documents reveal

Court documents that surfaced this week have unveiled Microsoft’s plans for a redesign of the Xbox Series X, known internally as “Lockhart.” What has gone somewhat unnoticed is that the company is simultaneously developing a portable gaming console, as indicated in the same court documents.

While specifics are limited, it appears to follow the design trend of current-gen handhelds like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck, featuring a sizable screen and buttons on both sides.

Xbox handheld console

As for the release date, it’s uncertain, but it’s expected to debut within this console generation, possibly alongside other Microsoft hardware releases, including a digital Xbox Series X and a cloud-based gaming device. Microsoft’s clear aim is to diversify its hardware offerings and boost sales.

What adds intrigue is that this move sets the stage for fierce competition in the handheld console space. Sony is set to launch the PlayStation Portal, Nintendo has its successful hybrid Switch and rumored successor, and the Steam Deck is making waves.

The leaked documents also revealed Microsoft’s gaming software plans. Gamers can anticipate remasters of beloved titles like Fallout 3 and Oblivion, a new Doom game, and Dishonored 3.

In related gaming news, the AMD Z1 version of the Asus ROG Ally gaming handheld has finally hit store shelves in the US market. The brand has slashed its price by $100 to make it more attractive for gamers.

China accuses U.S. of hacking Huawei servers, alleges Cyber Espionage Campaign

Beijing has leveled serious allegations against Washington, accusing it of hacking into Huawei’s servers and conducting cyber-attacks to pilfer critical data since 2009. These claims come amidst escalating tensions between the two global powers.

China’s Ministry of State Security has made these allegations public on its official WeChat account, unveiling what it calls “key despicable methods” employed by U.S. intelligence agencies in the realm of cyberespionage and data theft. The accusation is centered on the assertion that the U.S. government, along with influential tech companies, has secretly installed backdoors in software, applications, and equipment, facilitating the extraction of vital data from nations, including China and Russia.

The official statement points specifically to Huawei Technologies, alleging that the Office of Tailored Access Operations initiated server infiltrations at Huawei’s headquarters in 2009 and continued these surveillance activities. As of now, there has been no official response from the U.S. Department of State regarding the accusations put forth by China.

These allegations emerge in a climate where both the United States and China have been expanding their global espionage operations. Notably, in July, it was reported that hackers linked to Beijing had accessed the email account of the U.S. ambassador to China, potentially exposing hundreds of sensitive emails.

China’s National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center also disclosed its discovery of a spyware called “Second Date” during an investigation into a cyberattack on Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi’an, which occurred last year. According to the Ministry, “Second Date” is a “cyber-espionage malware developed by the U.S. National Security Agency, which operates covertly in thousands of networks in many countries around the world.”

In the midst of these mounting tensions, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan had recently expressed an interest in understanding the new “Made in China” Huawei chipset used in the Mate 60 Pro smartphone. Furthermore, the Xi Jinping government had briefly banned officials from using Apple iPhones at work, later retracting the decision and allowing all foreign devices, including Apple products, to be used by individuals in the country.

Huawei Shifts Strategy amidst the US-China Tech War:

Huawei has unveiled a significant strategic shift amidst the ongoing tech war, prioritizing artificial intelligence (AI) for the next decade. This marks a departure from its previous focus on cloud computing and intellectual property.

During an event in Shanghai, Huawei’s rotating chairwoman and CFO, Meng Wanzhou, announced the company’s “All Intelligence strategy.” This new direction aims to leverage AI’s growing impact across industries. Huawei aims to create a robust computing backbone for AI in China and globally. Meng Wanzhou stated, “Our end goal is to help meet the diverse AI computing needs of different industries,” though specific plans were not disclosed.

This pivot aligns with the global trend of businesses recognizing AI’s transformative potential. It will likely influence Huawei’s product offerings and R&D as it positions itself as an AI ecosystem leader.

Huawei joins a growing list of companies embracing AI to drive future growth and innovation. This shift is set to define Huawei’s trajectory for the next decade, impacting AI development on a global scale.

One of the most notable features of the NIO Phone is its car control key. This key, located on the side of the phone, can be used to access a variety of car-related functions, including locking and unlocking the car, starting the engine, and controlling the climate system.

The car control key is powered by a combination of Bluetooth Low Energy and Ultra-Wideband technologies. BLE is a low-power technology that allows the phone to communicate with the car over short distances. UWB is a newer technology that provides more precise location tracking.

The combination of BLE and UWB allows the NIO Phone to control the vehicle with a high degree of accuracy and reliability. For example, the phone can use UWB to determine its precise location relative to the car. This allows the phone to unlock the car automatically when the user approaches it.

For example, users can use the key to start their car and precondition the climate control system while they are still walking to the car. This can save time and energy, especially on cold days. Another important detail is that you’ll never have to carry a key again.

Foldable Smartphone Market Grows 10% YoY in Q2 2023, China Drives Growth

The global foldable smartphone market grew 10% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2023, reaching 2.1 million units shipped, according to Counterpoint Research. This growth is in stark contrast to the overall smartphone market, which declined 9% year-over-year during the same period.

In particular, Chinese market is driving the growth of the global foldable smartphone market. In the second quarter of 2023, shipments in the Chinese foldable smartphone market surged 64% year-over-year to reach 1.2 million units. With this, China alone represents a 58.6% share of the global foldable smartphone market.

China’s high market share in foldable phones is likely due to the wider range of foldable smartphones available there. Out of 18 foldable smartphones launched globally in the second quarter of 2023, only 11 of them were launched outside of China. This means that there are seven more foldable smartphones for users in China to choose from.

For example, foldable like the Xiaomi Fold 3, Huawei Mate X3, Oppo Find N3, and Vivo X Flip are only available in China. In Q2 2023 alone, China saw five new foldable tailored for its market, while the global market outside China only saw two foldable launches.

However, Chinese manufacturers are now starting to expand their foldable smartphone offerings to global markets, which is expected to boost growth in the coming months.

Samsung is also expected to play a major role in the growth of the foldable phone market in the second half of 2023 with its latest Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 foldable smartphones. Counterpoint Research Senior Analyst Jene Park predicts that the era of the mass foldable phone will start in 2024, led by Samsung and Huawei’s entry-level foldables. He says “Entry-level foldables are expected to be priced around $600 to $700, making them more accessible to consumers.”
