Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 crease persists, skipping waterdrop hinge?

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, according to tipster Ice Universe (the tweet is deleted though), seems to have a similar display crease as its predecessor, raising questions about the rumored waterdrop hinge technology. Previous reports suggested that the new foldable phone would feature a droplet hinge design to minimize the visibility of the crease.

Galaxy Z Fold 5 is likely to get the same old hinge?

However, the latest leak indicates that the crease is unlikely to see any significant changes this year. Samsung is reportedly conducting durability tests on the device, possibly to assess the effectiveness of the new hinge design alongside the existing U-shaped hinge. Chinese phone manufacturers have embraced the waterdrop hinge technology, with Oppo’s Find N2 receiving positive reviews for having the least visible crease in the industry. Nevertheless, durability remains a crucial concern as the foldable form factor continues to evolve.

iPhone 15 Tipped To Support 15W Wireless Charging Via Third-Party Qi2 Standard

Apple is expected to unveil its next-generation flagship iPhones later in September this year. There have been numerous leaks and rumors about the upcoming iPhone 15 lineup. Now, in a new development, ChargerLab reveals surprising information about the standard iPhone 15

iPhone 15 will reportedly support faster wireless charging speed

As per the report, the regular iPhone 15 will support a faster wireless charging speed through a non-MagSafe third-party charger. The speed on the current iPhone 14 series is limited to 7.5W through open wireless charging standards. Only MagSafe licensed accessories were eligible to get a full 15W wireless charging speed on compatible phones. The report adds that the upcoming iPhone 15 will support Qi2 open standard that will enable charging the phone at 15W speed. It’s worth noting that Qi2 is already compatible with all iPhones but Apple is yet to confirm the charging speed.

Industry sources revealed to ChargerLab that the previous limitation on wireless charging speeds was due to the restriction on non-MFi-certified products. For those unaware, MFi is a certification introduced by Apple where manufacturers are required to obtain a license to make accessories for Apple. Qi2 is based on Apple’s Mag standard and it is said to reduce the cost of wireless chargers to one-third of MagSafe chargers. This is because manufacturers won’t need to obtain MFi certification.

As per previous leaks and rumors, the standard iPhone 15 is expected to come with a Dynamic Island and also feature a USB-C port. The latest development of support for 15W wireless charging makes it worth an upgrade for older iPhone users. This is mainly because the current-generation iPhone 14 packs incremental upgrades over its predecessor.

Google Confirms That It Was Working On A Second Foldable Phone That Didn’t Arrive In Market

Earlier this month, Google unveiled its first-ever foldable phone called the Pixel Fold. It is currently up for pre-orders in a select few countries with shipments commencing from June 27th. Surprisingly, the highest 512GB variant has ran out in the US due to heavy demand. Now in a revelation to Android Authority, it was indeed working on a second foldable phone alongside the Pixel Fold.

Google confirms it was working on a second foldable device

Google-Pixel-Fold-1-1

The confession was made by Ivy Ross, Google’s Head of Design for Hardware in an official Made by Google podcast. The same team that was in charge of the Pixel Fold had created a second foldable phone. However, it never saw the light of the day as the team thought that the device was not good enough. The design lead added that the team felt that it should only launch devices that are good enough or better than what’s already out there.

The surprising confession does not reveal any concrete details about the canceled second foldable phone from Google. We may never know if it had the same form factor as the Pixel Fold or if the search giant took the clamshell foldable route to compete against the Galaxy Z Flip 4, OPPO Find N2 Flip, Motorola Razr, etc.

Google considered that the Pixel Fold was the better device among the two which is why it made it to the market and the other one did not. The confession also gives us an idea that Google may have more plans in the foldable phone segment in the future. The search giant may eventually release a clamshell foldable or whatever the canceled second foldable was supposed to be.

Samsung wants to take on Qualcomm and Google with its XR chips, says report

Leading tech companies have been hard at work developing extended reality (XR) technologies. Apple is reported to have a mixed-reality headset in the making, which is expected to be launched next month. Its Korean rival, Samsung, is not falling behind either, with rumors of an XR headset to be unveiled sometime later this year or in the first half of next year. What’s more, Samsung has also been taking steps to develop its own XR chips to challenge Qualcomm and Google, according to a report.

Samsung XR chips are taking a “concrete shape”

KEDGlobal, citing industry sources, claims that Samsung wants to foray into the XR device chip market. The new venture is said to be taking a “concrete shape.” However, no further details have been provided. The South Korean company has already announced earlier this year that it plans to develop XR devices. For the unaware, extended reality (XR) is an umbrella term for all immersive technologies that merge the physical and virtual worlds. It includes augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR).

samsung-exynos

As per the report, Samsung’s System LSI Division, which produces Exynos processors used in smartphones, cars, and wearable devices, will either develop new processing units for extended reality products or modify the existing Exynos line to suit XR devices. Currently, Qualcomm is leading the XR device chip development.

In November last year, the company unveiled the latest series of its XR chips, Snapdragon AR2, designed for AR glasses. More than 10 XR device makers were developing their products based on this chip, said Qualcomm. Google has also been investing heavily in XR development for several years. The company has released a number of XR-related products and services.
