Motorola Edge 30 Malaysia Launch: RM1,399 ($318) for Qualcomm’s Latest Snapdragon 778G Plus

After launching the Motorola Edge 30 in Europe in late April and in India last week, the Motorola Edge 30 has finally arrived at Malaysian shores as the cheapest smartphone in the Malaysian market that you can buy with Qualcomm’s 5G-enabled Snapdragon 778G Plus at only RM1,399 (318 USD) on its first pre-order sale.

Motorola Edge 30 Malaysia Launch

The Snapdragon 778G Plus SoC powering the Motorola Edge 30 is an overclocked version of last year’s popular Snapdragon 778G 5G chipset found on more premium mid-rangers like the Honor 50, Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G NE and the Samsung Galaxy A52s 5G. Although not as powerful as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 found on the Motorola Edge 30 Pro, the Snapdragon 778G Plus still packs quite a punch and it is much more power-efficient than its flagship counterpart.

Another feature of the Motorola Edge 30 is the design. Motorola has claimed the device to be the thinnest 5G phone yet in the market with a thickness of just 6.79mm(excluding the camera bump), which beats the previous record owner, the Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G NE which was 6.81mm in thickness. The device also weighs very light at 155g housed within the brand’s matte polycarbonate build.

As for the front, the Motorola Edge 30 is built around a 6.5-inch centered punch-hole 10-bit flat pOLED display. The panel has a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels (FHD+) and up to a 144Hz refresh rate. The screen supports the DCI-P3 colour gamut and HDR10+ content playback.

The 4,020mAh battery within the Motorola Edge 30 is relatively small by 2022 standards but the device does have support for 33W fast charging to top up the battery in no time.

On the rear, the handset sports a triple camera system comprising a 50MP primary sensor with OIS, another 50MP sensor with a 118° ultra-wide-angle lens and autofocus support for macro shots, and a 2MP depth sensor. For selfies and video calls, it uses a 32MP shooter located inside the punch hole.

The connectivity options on the phone include dual-SIM card slots, sub-6GHz 5G, WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, GNSS, NFC and USB Type-C. Unfortunately, it neither has a 3.5mm headphone jack nor comes with a MicroSD card slot.

The Motorola Edge 30 comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and comes in only Meteor Grey colour for the Malaysian market. The device’s official retail price in Malaysia is RM1,599 (364 USD), but Motorola Malaysia is holding a pre-order promotion period from 11th to 16th May 2022, where the device is offered for only RM1,399 (USD 318) with the ongoing RM200 cash rebate promo from the company.

Apple to launch new AirPods & MagSafe chargers with USB-C ports: Kuo

Despite the USB Type C format being almost universally adopted for its various benefits, Apple has still stuck to its proprietary Lightning port design for sometime now. However, a new report has suggested that soon certain products will be shifting away from the company’s dated standards.

Apple

The news arrives from known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who shared the information on Twitter. Recently, we have reported on the Cupertino based giant planning on shifting its popular iPhone series of smartphones to support USB Type C port. This would mark a major shift away from its Lightning Port. In the latest tweet, the analyst shared updates to his previous tweet, adding that additional Apple products would also make the switch to support USB Type C.

The other products includes the likes of new AirPods, Magic Keyboard, trackpad, and mouse, along with a new MagSafe chargers as well. Unfortunately, we still don’t know when exactly the move will occur and Kuo also stated that the shift is “in the foreseeable future.” For those unaware, the analyst had previously predicted that iPhones won’t be dropping the Lightning port until 2023.

Apple

So, it won’t be surprising if the brand has every other product make the shift as well. Although, we can likely expect the company to make this shift slowly. Keep in mind that this is still just speculation at this point, so take this report with a pinch of salt and stick around for more updates.

SID 2022: TCL Showcases Futuristic Looking Displays that Can Be Made Today

Besides Samsung and BOE, the Chinese Huizhou-based electronic giant, TCL is also a major player in the smartphone display industry, specifically under its display department, the TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology(CSOT) Corporation.

Last week, TCL CSOT was invited to attend the SID Display Week 2022 Trade Show in San Jose, California, where the company showcased its flagship display products and advanced technologies. The company was even nominated as the Best Large Booth of the 2022 I-Zone (Innovation Zone) awards. Here are some first looks at what the company unveiled at the event.

Mini-LEDs

TCL introduced its 34-inch WQHD R1500 curved Mini LED display designed for e-sports which offers a 21:9 ultra-wide aspect ratio, a 165Hz high refresh rate and a fast-responding HVA screen with a smaller halo. The display is compatible with different variable refresh rate technologies that provide an undistorted, smooth and clear PC gaming experience.

Leveraging on TCL‘s advanced algorithms, the display meets both the VESA Display HDR 1400 certification and FreeSync Premium Pro certification requirements. It delivers the best light and dark contrast and dynamic rendering meeting the requirements of e-sports players and specialized users for visual display.

The company also showcased its enormous 75-inch 8K 4Mask 1G1D Mini LED screen that trails on TCL’s latest and superior 8K 1G1D technology. Comparing with the difficult 8K TFT-LCD backplane 4 mask manufacturing process, this new mini LED screen significantly improves processing capacity while ensuring perfect image quality. With TCL‘s original glass-based Mini LED backlight with ultra-high individual zones controlled by a local dimming method, the brand claims the screen offers excellent image performance comparable to an OLED.

Foldables

TCL 360 Foldable OLED

On the foldables front, TCL has also made several industry-leading strides with their 8-inch 360 degrees folding display panel, which was earlier revealed during CES 2022. The display utilises TCL’s Pol-less technology integrating the leading technology of foldable screens with a 360 degree stress-free self-compensating hinge. When folded, it can be an easy-carry phone for capturing dynamic information with one hand; when unfolded, the uninterrupted 8-inch OLED display provides a perfect big-screen video or mobile gaming experience.

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality headsets require high resolutions to provide an immersive experience, and TCL knows it quite well. Which is why the company has unveiled its new 1764 PPI Real RGB LCD-VR panel which boasts higher pixel density than other competing VR LCD screens. It boasts a 90/120Hz smooth refresh rate with fast Liquid Crystal technology that eliminates the door-screen effect and vertigo common in existing VR products.

The 1512 PPI LCD-VR panel, TCL‘s first VR product which made its debut in 2021, and also comes with variable refresh rates was also announced by the company at SID 2022 to go into mass production this year, as an industry statement for TCL‘s industry-leading advantages in the VR space.

The latest information was shared by known tipster Ice Universe on Twitter. Apparently, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro will come with a titanium build. As of right now, the company’s rival, Apple, offers its own smartwatches with a titanium build. So its not surprising that Samsung is also following suit.

Apart from the new titanium build, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro will reportedly also feature Sapphire glass as well. For those unaware, this glass is more durable and has better protection against scratches. The tipster stated that the upcoming high end smartwatch from the brand will feature a rotating bezel design and boot WearOS. He also added that the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro will not offer narrow bezels.

vivo X80 Pro Unboxing & Quick review: X70 Pro Plus Ultra

We just finished reviewing the Vivo X Note a few days ago. But the X80 series was also released recently. While I don’t think it’s a good idea for Vivo to flood the market with many flagship phones, since they have released new phones, we have no choice but to review them for you guys. Today, we bring you the unboxing and quick review video of vivo’s flagship camera phone for the first half of the year: the Vivo X80 Pro.

vivo X80 Pro featured review 21

The box for the X80 Pro is a bit smaller and thinner than both the previous X70 Pro plus and X Note. Keeping the phone aside, we didn’t find any wired headphones. It seems Vivo has also learned how to be more “environmentally friendly”. But the brand still includes a very good-looking phone case. The instructions and UV protection stickers are also available. This time the charger is 80w and supports PD 65w. This dual Type-C charging cable can be your travel charger.

vivo X80 Pro review 16

More than other brands, we have always thought that vivo designs beautiful phones, but the X80 Pro is an exception. If the rectangular plus round design is acceptable to me, the periscope telephoto lens outside the main camera housing is not acceptable to me. While I understand that the Micro Gimbal is too big, so the telephoto cannot be placed next to the portrait camera. But I just don’t like the awkward design. And it really drives me crazy that the telephoto camera and the top two lenses are not in line. This year’s X80 Pro has made too many sacrifices to unify the design style.

vivo X80 Pro review 19The rest of the design remains the same as last year’s X70 series, such as the glossy top trim strip and the smooth frosted glass on the back. It also supports 2 SIM cards and NFC. Fingerprint recognition becomes the same large ultrasonic fingerprint as the X Note, but the silent switch on the X Note is not present on the X80 Pro. If you are an X70 Pro Plus user, you will feel no big change when you switch to X80 Pro. The biggest change you can feel is that the lens design has become uglier.

vivo X80 Pro display review 13

As soon as I opened the X80 Pro’s screen, I thought it looked familiar. After comparing the screen specs of the X70 Pro Plus, I was sure that this screen is the same screen as the X70 Pro Plus. We’re familiar with this screen, and I’m sure you don’t want to hear us repeat its performance. Except for the side view color shift, it’s all top of the line at the moment.

vivo X80 Pro Review: Performance & Gaming

I have to say, Vivo knows its users very well. They know that we prefer the Dimensity 9000 to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. That’s why it is offering two versions with identical specs but different processors. You can buy whichever processor you like. The X80 Pro we have is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 version. Because the Dimensity 9000 version is not yet available for sale. We are already familiar with the Benchmark performance of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, so you can take a look at the table to get an idea.

vivo X80 Pro review 11As for the gaming performance, we simply ran PUBG and Genshin. Maybe the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 performance is too bad, or maybe Vivo is just trying to protect your hands from getting burned, as usual, the performance is just mediocre. If you want a phone with good gaming performance, the X80 Pro is definitely not the best choice.

vivo X80 Pro review 10

vivo X80 Pro Review: Cameras

vivo X80 Pro camera review 09

The four lenses on the X80 Pro are a 50MP main camera, a 48MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 12MP portrait camera, and an 8MP periscope telephoto camera. The main camera adds a glass lens. The Micro Gimbal of the ultra-wide-angle camera has also been replaced with the portrait camera.

vivo X80 Pro review 17This time the V1 chip of X80 Pro was updated to V1+ chip. Because the other lenses have not changed much, so we mainly talk about this Micro Gimbal portrait lens. Honestly, the closest focusing distance of this lens is a bit too far, and it often fails to focus for daily shooting. Sometimes there is an inexplicable shaking problem, and the probability of this bug is quite high. The Micro Gimbal is actually better for video recording, but you can’t record 4k and 60fps video with this lens. So I prefer the X70 Pro Plus design that puts the Micro Gimbal on the ultra-wide-angle camera. The other lenses are not significantly different compared to the X70 Pro Plus or X Note. If you want to know more details about this camera system, you can check out our X70 Pro Plus and X Note reviews.

For some reason, we can’t find the official Note app in our X80 Pro, nor can I search for it in the Vivo app store, so I have to use a third-party app if I want to take notes. How to use the IR remote control of Origin OS is also hard to find.

If you want to use IR remote but don’t know how to use it. I’ll teach you here, go to settings and find Jovi. Then click Jovi InLife and download the app. Then you can add the devices you want to remote control.

vivo X80 Pro review: Battery & Charging

vivo X80 Pro review 04

The X80 Pro’s battery capacity has been increased by 200mAh over the previous generation, and the wired charging power has been increased to 80w. However, the compatibility of charging protocols is still not good. There are more versions for sale this time, so I’ve listed a table for your reference. In fact, the Vivo X series has never been cheap, so buying the X80 Pro depends on whether you are interested in its powerful camera system or not. I know a lot of people are interested in the X80 Standard Edition. We will also bring its review as soon as possible.

Oppo Reno 7 5G users can now try Android 12 in India

Oppo launched the Reno 7 5G in India in February. Despite releasing in the second month of 2022, the smartphone debuted with Android 11-based ColorOS 12. Now, three months after its debut, the company has kickstarted the Android 12 beta program as scheduled.

oppo-reno7-5g-phone-featured_2
Oppo Reno 7 5G (Review)

Earlier this month, Oppo revealed that it will start Android 12 beta testing for Oppo Reno 7 5G in India from May 18. However, the firm has opened registrations today itself (May 16).

For the unaware, Oppo is known for starting ColorOS beta initiative for select devices earlier than the planned date. Hence, we are not surprised to learn that the Reno 7 5G  users in India can register for the program two days earlier.

In order to enroll, the device should be on firmware version A.14. This is the only requirement. But the brand has allocated only 5,000 seats and the registration window closes on May 23.

In order to register, users need to navigate to Settings > Software Update > Gear Icon >  Apply for Beta version > Update Beta Version and follow on-screen instructions. Applicants who get selected will receive the Android 12 beta build via OTA in 3 working days.

As of now, Oppo hasn’t disclosed the date for the stable release. Anyway, going by the company’s history of software rollout, Android 12 stable will likely hit the Oppo Reno 7 5G in India in a month or two.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 launch event confirmed for May 20

Qualcomm has confirmed that the company will be hosting a new launch event on 20th May in China. While details about the event have not been revealed, the company is expected to announce its new Qualcomm Snapdragon series processors.

The brand will likely announce two new smartphone chipsets — Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 Launch Event

This will mark the debut of the 7-series processor from Qualcomm with the new naming scheme that the company introduced last year when it announced the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC.

Have you ever imagined drawing on windows with your fingers when you were younger? Now, what if you could do that as an adult? Of course, you can imagine drawing on windows with your fingers, but what I’m talking about is what if your window was a touchscreen that not only allowed you to draw on it but also was see-through to look out from the window?

Your Next Foldable Smartphone Could Unfold 360-Degrees, Here’s a First Look

Although LG has officially exited the smartphone business last year, the company is still very popular in the electronics supply chain industry, specifically in its LED Display Business Division.

This year at SID 2022 Display Week, LG was invited as one of the more esteemed panelists at the event, and during the company’s showcase, the brand revealed that its research and development team has successfully developed a foldable OLED device that can fold and unfold from 0 to 360 degrees.

During the event, LG Display showed off a Foldable OLED touchscreen that is 8.03 inches when unfolded horizontally. However, what makes this display unique is that the panel could be folded inwards or folded outwards, in fact, it could be folded at any angle from 0 to 360 degrees.

Durability-wise, it seems that LG is using UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass) technology for the Foldable OLED, and the exterior screen is coated with an anti-fingerprint material to keep the device looking spick and span always. LG also claims that the 360 Foldable OLED is rated for 200,000 folds under normal use and other technical details for the display include its 2480 x 2200 pixel resolution allowing for a sharp 413 PPI, 109.9% coverage of DCI-P3 colour gamut and the panel is rated for 430 nits of brightness under typical situations and can reach up to 600 nits of peak brightness in challenging situations.

There does not seem to have a practical use case for this form factor currently, but the design surely looks futuristic, and kudos to the display panel engineers for pushing the limits of how we can shape our screens.

Another reveal during the event was the company’s 17-inch foldable OLED panel, but this time around it doesn’t fold 360 degrees, it folds at a rather conventional 180 degrees inwards, just like a laptop. But at the enormous size of 17 inches, the demonstration of the LG display prototype was still rather impressive. The design overall is a clamshell design, one that you will find in Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 or the Oppo Find N.
