Vivo X Note Full Review: X70 Pro+ MAX?

After I unboxed the Vivo X Note, I switched the SIM card from my Mi 11 Ultra to this phone. And after using the X Note as my only phone for a few days, I have a lot of things to tell you about the device. This video is not only a review of the X Note but also my personal and subjective experience of switching from the Mi 11 Ultra to the X Note. Like an enlarged version of the X70 Pro Plus, this phone is great, but it’s not for me.

vivo X Note review 01

Vivo X Note Review: Design & Display

Although I said in the unboxing video that 7 inches isn’t much bigger than my 11 Ultra, I still had to get used to a phone that was 80mm wide. Because it has a 21:10 screen ratio, it’s much wider than other 6.8-inch 21:9 phones. To put it simply, if you like to use your phone with one hand, this is not the phone for you.

vivo X Note review 32But on the other side, if you use your phone with both hands on a daily basis, the extra wide screen has no effect on you. Vivo also knows that the body is too wide, so the lines on both sides of the back panel are designed to make you look a little narrower. Perhaps because I am a Mi 11 Ultra user, the design of the camera module is not that unacceptable to me. At least it is much better looking than the upcoming X80 series. Maybe it’s because the body is too big, so the vibration motor is weak. The SIM card slot can only hold two SIMs, and there is no headphone jack. But it is rarely equipped with an IR emitter, and there is a silent switch. I won’t repeat how good the ultrasonic fingerprint recognition is, it’s fast and has a large recognition area. But the fingerprint quick action feature only has shortcuts for WeChat and Alipay, so non-Chinese users might not be able to use this feature. All in all, the X Note is quite satisfactory in terms of design this time around.

vivo X Note review 25

With a 7-inch QWHD+ OLED screen, you can see how stunning this screen is just by looking at the specs on paper. Not only is its actual viewing size comparable to the iPad Mini, but it also has a higher contrast screen than the iPad mini.

vivo X Note vs iPad Mini 6 review 24It also has LTPO 2.0, which flagship phones all have. And because of the use of E5 material, the maximum brightness is even higher than E4. So you can see the screen more clearly in the sunlight. And the touch latency issue on the X70 Pro Plus is fixed. Although I’m happy with the color and maximum brightness of this screen, there is a common problem with this year’s Samsung E5 material screens: the side-view color shift problem.vivo X Note review 22 When I use the phone on the table, I always feel that the screen is blue. One other complaint is that it doesn’t support the stylus, either. I tried to write on the X Note’s screen with the vivo Pad’s stylus, but it didn’t work at all. I think it’s really a waste of such a big screen for the X Note not to have a stylus.

Vivo X Note Review: Performance, Benchmarks, & Gaming

When it comes to the performance test, I have to tell you first that the X Note is not the kind of phone that focuses on performance. While it seems to perform well in the CPU parts of each Bench Test, the GPU results tell us that Vivo is still the same Vivo. When you start playing games with it, Vivo will start limiting performance to control temperatures.

vivo X Note benchmarks

Vivo is probably thinking that people who would buy their brand’s flagship phone should be more into taking pictures than playing games. So all the Vivo flagship phones we tested didn’t perform that well in games. I’m not going to analyze each game specifically, so you can see for yourselves what level of gaming experience the X Note is.

vivo X Note review 16The X Note is equipped with the same V1 chip as the X70 Pro Plus. It is also true that you can get a higher and more stable frame rate by using the game frame insertion. But as with the Neo 3, there are fewer games supported and there is a touch delay, so I don’t recommend turning this feature on every time you play.

Vivo X Note Review: Cameras

vivo X Note camera 14

The X Note isn’t the most powerful phone from Vivo in terms of photography, but it’s still a top-notch camera. I’m comparing it to the Mi 11 Ultra instead of the X70 Pro Plus, not only because my last phone was the Mi 11 Ultra, but also because the X Note and X70 Pro Plus have such similar camera specs that the difference between them is so small.

vivo X Note vs mi 11 ultra featuredIt is difficult to show how powerful the X Note camera is. Interestingly, remember the results of our photo comparison between the K50 and the realme GT Neo3? The K50 had muted colors, and poor dynamic range, but better details. The Neo 3 had vibrant colors, good dynamic range, but not as much detail as the K50. This conclusion applies to the Mi 11 Ultra and X Note as well.

Main & Ultra Wide Camera

While the Mi 11 Ultra will be sharper, there’s no doubt that the X Note’s more vibrant colors and superior dynamic range make for photos that you’ll fall in love with at first glance. And the white balance is more accurate than the Mi 11 Ultra. And both the main camera and the ultra-wide camera perform the same.

2X 5X

What surprised me was the 2x photo session. I thought the Mi 11 Ultra would have a bigger gap with the X Note without the optical 2x lens. But in fact, the difference is not significant. Sometimes the images are even sharper indoors. This also proves how powerful the Mi 11 Ultra’s main camera is. But the play does not seem to be as unstable as the X Note, sometimes good and sometimes bad, so it seems that the X Note’s 2x optical lens is better.

Although the X Note’s 5x telephoto sensor is not as large as the Mi 11 Ultra, it seems that Vivo’s algorithm has improved considerably. In most scenes, it is on the same level as the 11 Ultra. You know what, the X Note’s sensor is only half the size of the 11 Ultra! This performance is beyond my expectations. However, when it comes to scenes with almost no light, this sensor is powerless even by excellent algorithm.

The resolution of the front lens is similar for both phones. But still the dynamic range X Note has a definite advantage. The Mi 11 Ultra takes too dark a picture of the human eye.

The main camera video is again won by the dynamic range. But unfortunately, the 2x and 5x lenses can’t record 4k video. And even at 4k 30fps, it’s impossible to switch lenses during recording. This is something the Mi 11 Ultra does very well, with all three lenses supporting 4k 60fps. It is also unfortunate that the X Note, like the X70 pro plus, has a system that intelligently judges whether the current scene is suitable for taking pictures with an optical telephoto lens. Meaning that even if you tap the 2x button or the 5x button, the photo may have been taken by the main camera cropping the frame into a 2x or 5x shot, not by an optical lens.

Sometimes the system is accurate, and it is true that the main camera crops the photo better. But sometimes this is not the case. I took a photo with a 2x optical lens in Pro mode compared to the one with the main crop, and the 2x optical lens was clearly better. And even in pro mode, you still can’t choose which optical lens to shoot video with, you have to listen to the system algorithm. I paid for the phone, but I can’t use which lens I want to use, which really makes me feel bad.

Vivo X Note Review: Software

I also had a hard time with Origin OS, which has gotten much better with a few upgrades, but I’m still very uncomfortable with it.

For example, the control center and the notification center are separate in the new version, as they are on many phones. First, let’s see how MIUI is controlled. No need to slide down from the top, slide down the right side of the desktop is the control center, slide down the left side is the notification center. Swipe left and right to switch back and forth.

vivo X Note vs Mi 11 Ultra review 23

But how is Origin OS controlled? Wherever you slide, it’s the Control Center. The notification center can only be called out by sliding down from the top on the left, and there is no way to switch left or right. You should know that this is a 7-inch phone, and I hate the logic of this operation in the past few days. Yes, I know it has a mini screen mode, but then why should I buy this big screen. So I’ve been using the old Control Center for the past few days. Even though I’ve set the language to English, there’s also the Chinese language that pops up somewhere. Plus the camera issues mentioned earlier. For me personally, Origin OS may be a very beautiful system, but it’s definitely not a very user-friendly system.

Vivo X Note: Battery & Charging

The 5000mAh battery is really not that big for a 7-inch body. And the battery life of X Note is rather average. Maybe it’s because the huge QWHD+ screen is so power-hungry that it doesn’t last much longer than other phones.

vivo X Note review 06 I used the X Note fully charged to go out and use the 5G network, with 18% remaining after 9 hours of use. The 80w wired charging allows the X Note to charge up to 57% in 15 minutes and take 33 minutes to fully charge. Poor charging compatibility has always been a weakness of Vivo phones, and this X Note is no exception. Even when charging with a charger that supports 100w PD, the maximum charging power is only 14w.

vivo X Note review 07

Vivo X Note is a rare large-screen flagship phone that does a great job in design, built quality, and camera. If you’re looking for a large screen phone over 7 inches, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better specced model. So if you are sure you need a big flagship phone, not a foldable phone, this may be your only choice.

vivo X Note review 01

But for me personally, I’ll be plugging my SIM card back into the Mi 11 Ultra, not because the X Note is bad, but because I’m just not used to the huge screen and Origin OS.

Google Pixel Watch could get a Fit model with thick bezels and a high price

Google is gearing up to launch its first smartwatch in the market which will reportedly be called Pixel Watch. This device will be accompanied by another model, dubbed Google Pixel Watch Fit and now some of its details have leaked online.

A new report coming from ShrimpApplePro claims to have heard about another model of the smartwatch named Pixel Watch Fit by Google employees, but it’s not clear whether it’s the same as the Pixel Watch.

Google Pixel Watch

As the Google Pixel Watch name has already been trademarked by the company, it’s safe to assume the upcoming smartwatch from the brand to be called Pixel Watch. The report adds that the Pixel Watch Fit could have a difference in the design.

It is said that the Fit model will have very thick bezels around the display, unlike the standard model which is expected to feature an almost bezel-less screen. As for the build, unlike the stainless steel body of the standard model, the Fit model is said to have an aluminum body design. There’s also a Special Black Version rumored to get launched.

The upcoming smartwatches from the technology giant are expected to go official next month during the Google I/O annual developers conference. Coming to the pricing, the Google Pixel Watch Fit is expected to be priced at around $400, which is more expensive than the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and around the same price as the starting price of the Apple Watch Series 7. The pricing appears to be in line with the previous report which said it could cost more than Fitbit watches.

Ola Electric to recall over 1,400 e-scooters over recent fire accidents

Ola Electric, the electric vehicle division of the popular cab hailing service, has just announced that it will be recalling more than 1,400 units of its electric scooters in India following recent fire accidents.

The scooter was first engulfed in smoke before the fire

According to a Reuters report, the company is issuing the recall following a government probe into the fire accidents of its electric scooters. For those unaware, there have been many cases of electric scooters catching fire in India. These incidents weren’t just limited to Ola Electric scooters, and even included the likes of Okinawa and Pure EV as well. Notably, Okinawa has also issued a recall for its electric scooters in the India following these fire accidents.

As of right now, most of these incidents are believed to be caused due to the battery on the EVs overheating in the Indian summer. A lack of proper safeguards and design flaws are believed to be the primary factors for these accidents. Thus, it had prompted the Indian road transport ministry to urge the Centre for Fire, Explosive, and Environmental Safety (CFEES) to launch an investigation into these incidents to find out the root cause and prevent such accidents in the future.

Ola S1 Pro Gerua

In a statement, Ola Electric said that “We will be conducting a detailed diagnostics and health check of the scooters in that specific batch and therefore are issuing a voluntary recall of 1,441 vehicles.” Although, the brand also added that one of its vehicles catching fire was an isolated event and these recalls are just a “pre-emptive measure.”

UK man uses AirTags and PowerPoint presentation to track his lost bags

It has been a mixed bag of positives and negatives for Apple’s AirTags since they were launched by the tech powerhouse. There have been concerns that the device is being put to criminal use in addition to privacy concerns. However, we have continued to hear wonderful stories concerning the AirTags and relating to its original purpose. A UK man has used the AirTags in his missing luggage and a PowerPoint presentation to ask the airline for his lost bags.Apple Airtags

On a return trip from South Africa, Elliot Sharod and his wife arrived in the United Kingdom without their luggage due to some changes in their flight trajectory. Probably anticipating issues of lost luggage, Sharod had placed an AirTag in each of the bags and was able to track them via his Find My app. The bags were tracked to Frankfurt, which was the first stop on their trip from South Africa to the UK. The airline, Aer Lungus subsequently delivered the luggage to Sharod the following day, albeit with one of the three bags still missing.

The airline seemingly was not responsive to Sharod’s further request for his lost bag. He had used multiple channels including multiple calls, emails and tweets to complain without a resolution of the issue. Sharod subsequently deployed the tracking information from his Find My app that pinpointed the location of the bag. He used screenshots from the app to create a PowerPoint presentation he shared on multiple platforms. The airline says it has checked on the locations but the bag could not be found, possibly stolen.

Sharod has contacted the police to help recover his stolen bag. He says this has been a shocking experience with the airline. He is not impressed with the response of the airline to his missing luggage. A recent update, however, shows that the missing bag has finally been retrieved.

Design

The design of the Realme GT Neo3 is very sportive and it can even be considered gaming-centric. It comes with a rear side sporting two vertical stripes thanks to which the design reminds of a sports car. It is an original design just like the ones of every other phone from the GT series. With the OnePlus Ace, you get a very original design as well, but it is more elegant and more suitable for normal users instead of gamers. With its flat borders and its singular camera module, it is very suggestive. Both the phones come with a front glass protected by Gorilla Glass 5.

Display

The displays of these two phones are exactly the same. We are talking about an OLED panel that shows up to one billion colors with vibrant tones and deep blacks. The diagonal of the panel is 6.7 inches, pretty good for gamers and power users. They come with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2412 pixels, a 120 Hz refresh rate, the HDR10+ certification, a peak brightness up to 950 nits, and an optical in display fingerprint reader. We are not talking about a flagship-class display, but it is definitely a high-end panel providing great image quality and a very smooth user experience. For the first time on OnePlus and Realme phones, the punch hole is placed in the middle of the flat panel.

Specs & Software

The OnePlus Ace is a superior phone in terms of hardware because it has a slightly better chipset: the MediaTek Dimensity 8100 Max built with a 5 nm production process and running at a max frequency of 2.85 GHz. The MediaTek Dimensity 8100 Max has the same CPU and GPU performance as the MediaTek Dimensity 8100 found on the Realme GT Neo3, but the AI performance is improved. Further, the OnePlus Ace comes in a memory configuration providing a higher amount of internal storage: up to 512 GB. On the other hand, the GT Neo3 has a more affordable variant with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of native storage, while the Ace starts with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The operating system is Android 12 on both phones, customized by ColorOS 12.1 and Realme UI 3.0, respectively. Note that the ColorOS 12.1 has a few more features than Realme UI 3.0, but they are almost the same user interface as the Realme UI is based on ColorOS.

Camera

Even the camera department is exactly the same. On the rear side, you get a triple camera with a Sony IMX766 main sensor sporting a 50 MP resolution and OIS, as well as an f/1.9 focal aperture. The Sony IMX766 is paired with an 8 MP ultrawide lens and a 2 MP macro camera. The phones are able to record 4K videos at 60 fps. Inside the punch hole, there is a 16 MP selfie snapper with an f/2.5 focal aperture.

Battery

The Realme GT Neo3 and the OnePlus Ace come with the same 4500 mAh battery and 150W fast charging, but there is an additional variant of the former with a 5000 mAh battery and 80W fast charging.

Price

The Realme GT Neo3 starts from €328/$355 in China, while you need at least €360/$389 for the OnePlus Ace. Overall, the Ace is a slightly better phone due to its Dimensity 8100 Max chipset and ColorOS 12.1, but a lot of people would prefer the 5000 mAh version of the GT Neo3 in order to get longer battery life.

Realme GT Neo3 vs OnePlus Ace: PRO and CONS

Realme GT Neo3

PRO

  • There is a variant with a bigger battery
  • More affordable memory configuration
  • Sportive design
  • Wider availability

CONS

  • Inferior chipset

OnePlus Ace

PRO

  • Better chipset
  • More elegant
  • More internal storage (in its best configuration)
  • ColorOS 12.1

CONS

  • 4500 mAh battery is the only option

Oppo K10 5G Series Launched: Razer Collaboration, Sony IMX766 with OIS, 5000mAh battery

Oppo has officially launched its Oppo K10 5G series in China today. The Oppo K10 5G series is positioned as a gaming-oriented value-for-money flagship for the Chinese market and Oppo has even collaborated with Razer, the well-renowned gaming electronics manufacturer, to give gamers the mobile gaming experience they deserve.

Oppo K10 5G

The Oppo K10 5G is the world’s first-ever smartphone powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8000 MAX SoC. The MediaTek Dimensity 8000 MAX is essentially an underclocked version of the Dimensity 8100 that we have seen on the Realme GT Neo 3 and Redmi K50

Oppo mentioned in the launch that the reason the brand selected the Dimensity 8000 MAX over Dimensity 8100 was that after comparing both chipsets, the company found that the performance difference between both the chipsets was insignificant. Compared to the more significantly extra battery endurance that the underclocked Dimensity 8000 provided, Oppo wanted gamers to enjoy their gaming experience without worrying about battery life.

Oppo K10-MediaTek-Dimensity-8000-Max

For memory and connectivity, Oppo has put in the fastest WiFi 6 and 5G module in the smartphone, the fastest LPPDR5 RAM, and the fastest UFS 3.1 storage into the Oppo K10 to prevent any lags or stutters during gaming.

For the screen, the Oppo K10 5G is equipped with a 6.59-inch 120Hz FHD LTPS LCD display with a peak brightness of 600 nits, to deliver a smooth gaming experience for all the gamers out there. Battery-wise, the Oppo K10 5G is equipped with a 5000mAh battery with support for Oppo’s 67W SuperVOOC fast charging.

Oppo K10-120Hz

For an enjoyable gaming experience, haptics must not be ignored. That’s why the Oppo K10 5G is equipped with a flagship-grade X-axis linear vibration motor to deliver high-quality haptics for its users. However, hardware alone can’t win users over, so Oppo reached out to Razer for a collaboration on their new Oppo K10 5G series.

Razer has incorporated its expertise into the Oppo K10’s vibration motor system to provide users with a “mechanical keyboard like” typing and gaming experience for users to enjoy on their smartphone. With the mechanical in-hand feel, gamers are said to be in their natural habitat, providing better gaming performance since they are more immersed than ever with this revolutionary experience.

The Oppo K10 5G has a triple rear camera setup with a 64MP main sensor, 8MP 112° ultra-wide-angle lens and a 2MP macro lens. On the front, the 16MP selfie camera is housed within the punch hole located on the left side of the display.

Oppo K10 Pro

Besides featuring all the bells and whistles that the Oppo K10 5G has, the Oppo K10 Pro takes the series a step further with its upgraded cameras, an upgraded screen, and an upgraded processor over the standard Oppo K10 5G.

Under the hood, the Oppo K10 Pro swaps out the Dimensity 8000 MAX with Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 888 processor. To fully utilise the Snapdragon 888 to its full potential, Oppo has installed stainless steel vapour cooling technology to keep the Snapdragon 888 running cool and smooth all time.

1. Oppo K10-Pro-Snapdragon 888

For the screen, the Oppo K10 Pro opts for a flagship-grade 6.62-inch 120Hz FHD Samsung E4 OLED panel that has a typical brightness of 500 nits and a peak brightness of 1300 nits instead. Keeping the lights on is the Oppo K10 Pro’s massive 5000mAh battery with Oppo’s 80W SuperVOOC charging technology.

1. Oppo K10-Pro-80W SuperVOOC-5000mAh battery

The biggest upgrade here is the camera. The Oppo K10 Pro features the same Sony IMX766 main sensor with OIS found on the Oppo Find X5 Pro. Since Oppo has developed a sophisticated camera algorithm for the Sony IMX766 over the years, the company claims the Oppo K10 Pro can deliver spectacular camera performance whether it be day or night. Besides the main sensor, the Oppo K10 Pro features the same 8MP ultra-wide, 2MP Macro and 16MP selfie camera as the standard Oppo K10.

The Oppo K10 Pro also does not skimp on ergonomics as well. The Oppo K10 Pro’s camera island seamlessly curves into the back frame of the device like its more expensive flagship Oppo Find X5 Pro cousin. These curves ensure that users will always stay comfortable when going for long-gaming sessions on their latest Oppo K10 Pro.

Google Pixel Watch final design revealed in leaked images

Google will be holding the I/O 2022 event in May. Apart from sharing information on its new products, the search engine giant is speculated to showcase new hardware such as the Pixel 6a mid-range phone and its first-ever smartphone – the Pixel Watch.  Recent reports have revealed key information on the smartwatch’s key specifications and design. A new report by Android Central reportedly gives a good look at the final design of the Pixel Watch.

The report claims that a Google Pixel Watch was left and found in a restaurant in the UK. The anonymous source who found the watch has claimed that it could be “a testing model for the internal Pixel team.”

The alleged Pixel Watch (codenamed as Rohan) looks identical to the leaked renders that were seen in the past. The smartwatch has a minimalist design with super-slim bezels. Previous reports have claimed that Google’s smartwatch will be equipped with at least two hidden buttons. In the image below, one of those buttons can be seen placed beside the crown.

The blue-colored strap appears to be a proprietary band designed for the Pixel Watch, which indicates it may not allow users to swap out watch bands. It is likely that the search engine giant may offer the strap in more colors. It appears that the smartwatch can be charged by connecting the charger to its back. The device may carry support for wireless charging. The report claims that no charger was found with the watch.

As far as the design is concerned, the source has said that the bottom part of the smartwatch has a metallic appearance, but it seems to be coated with glass. When the watch was turned on, It only showed a boot logo, which suggests that there is no OS installed on the device. Rumors have it that it will come preloaded with Wear OS 3.1, which Google has co-developed with Samsung.

The package of the device carries the text: “This device has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission and Industry Canada, nor has it been tested for compliance with EU regulations.” It mentions that the device is built for” internal testing and development only” and also states that the “markings and packaging are not final.” Google will probably showcase the Pixel Watch at I/O 2022 and announce it alongside the Pixel 7 series of flagship phones later this year.

Panic’s Playdate is a retro handheld game console that may never run out of battery

Panic’s Playdate is a handheld game console that was announced by the company back in 2019. Pre-orders for the Playdate had commenced last year but the actual launch of the quirky-looking handheld game console was delayed. Now, Panic has announced that the first shipments of the Playdate have now begun.Panic Playdate handheld game console

The design of the Playdate includes a 2.7-inch black and white display and it may literally never run out of battery as it features a hand crank on the side. There are also a few functional buttons on the front.

The handheld game console looks like a blast from the past when compared with the high-octane and classy handhelds currently on the market. According to Panic, the first batch of Playdate consoles will begin shipping to the earliest pre-order customers, and the backlog will be gradually cleared. Currently, Panic is asking for patience from customers as the product is being manufactured in small batches. Therefore, it will take some time to meet up with all the pre-orders.

E-mails have been sent to the customers who will be receiving their consoles and new customers can still place their orders. However, new orders will not be delivered until 2023. The Playdate is priced at $179 and the package includes the console, a USB cable, and two weekly games for twelve weeks.Panic Playdate handheld game console

Panic is working on expanding the lineup of games available for users. It is encouraging developers and will soon unveil the Catalog app, similar to a games store. The new Playdate Mirror tool for Mac and PC has also been integrated into the device. It allows users to mirror their console’s screen on a PC and record videos, live stream, or use the bigger display to project an ongoing game.

The black and white display of the Playdate could be a major drawback among potential customers. However, the purpose of developing this console is to play different types of retro-inspired games that do not require color, analog sticks, and so on. Panic did not put any numbers on the level of demand for the Playdate, so it’s unclear what the demand looks like.
