Truecaller will no longer offer call recording feature, here’s why

Just yesterday, we reported that the Call recording feature on Android phones is about to get killed. Today, one of the most popular apps used for recording calls and for identifying call details – Truecaller – stated to News18 Tech that it will soon stop offering the call recording feature on its app.

Google for a long time has been keen on assuring privacy and Security on Android phones. Starting from Android 10, Google didn’t allow apps to record calls on Android phones.

To foil the restriction imposed by Google, apps started using the Accessibility API for call recordings. Using Accessibility API means users can simply get permission from users for recording calls regardless of them being on any Android versions. Now, however, with Google’s recent Play Store policy change, apps cannot request remote call audio recording.

Truecaller call recording

That being said, apps like Truecaller, which uses Accessibility API for recording calls will not work. And thus, the company has now confirmed the same in an official statement.

“At Truecaller, we had introduced call recording for all Android smartphones based on overwhelming consumer requests. Call Recording on Truecaller was free for everyone, permission based, and required uses to enable the feature using the Google Accessibility API. However, as per the updated Google Developer Program policies, we are unable to offer call recording any longer,” said a Truecaller spokesperson.

Truecaller also stated that devices that have an in-built call recording feature can still record calls. Currently, Xiaomi, Google, Samsung, OnePlus, and Oppo offer built-in call recording features on their dialers, so users owning phones of any of these brands are spared.

A presenter of a webinar held by Google recently said the same. “If the app is the default dialer on the phone and also pre-loaded, accessibility capability is not required to get access to the incoming audio stream, and hence, will not be in violation.”

Redmi Note 12 lineup’s two devices spotted at TENAA, reveals key details on display, battery

Xiaomi’s sub-brand is working on the Redmi Note 12 series of smartphones. Like its predecessor models, the lineup may include multiple devices. Two of them have been reportedly spotted in the database of the TENAA certification platform. The listings have revealed details like dimensions, display size, and battery capacity.

The screenshots of the TENAA listings shared by the tipster Digital Chat Station show model numbers such as 22041216C and 22041216UC. Both devices were seen at the CMIIT certification site earlier this month. The TENAA listings show that both devices have the same dimensions and display size.

The 22041216C and 22041216UC devices have a 6.6-inch display, which probably supports a Full HD+ resolution. The 22041216C variant has a 4,980mAh (rated value) battery, whereas the 22041216UC model has a 4,300mAh (rated value) battery. Both are preinstalled with the Android 12 OS, and they measure 163.64 x 74.29 x 8.8mm.

The 22041216UC device, which packs a larger battery, is likely to arrive with better specs than the 22041216C variant. It is expected to arrive with faster-charging capabilities. Last year, the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G carried support for 120W fast charging. Hence, it is likely the 22041216UC model may come with a similar charging solution.

The rumor mill has yet to reveal concrete information on the specs of the Note 12 lineup. However, it is speculated that it will be powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity series of chipsets. Hence, it is likely that the lineup may include the Dimensity 1300 or Dimensity 8000 SoC.

The TENAA listings for the 22041216C and 22041216UC are expected to be populated with the remaining specifications in the coming days. The Note 12 lineup is expected to debut as early as next month (May) in China.

Apple reportedly seals deal with BOE for the manufacture of iPhone 14 displays

Chinese company BOE has reportedly inked a deal with Cupertino-based tech giant Apple for the production of the iPhone 14 display. The deal is reported to be worth 50 million yuan ($7.75 million) and will see BOE producing up to a quarter of the OLED displays for iPhone 14. BOE is China’s leading OLED manufacturer and the second in the world after Samsung.iPhone 14 render featured

BOE will provide the 6.1-inch panels that will be present in the vanilla iPhone 14 models only. Higher models from the upcoming iPhone 14 series are excluded from the arrangement. These higher models (iPhone 14 Pro, Max, etc) will still be catered for by LG and Samsung. The new business is a boon for BOE which is entering the current iPhone production trajectory for the first time. BOE however already has a functional partnership with Apple for the production of replacement versions of current models and panels for older iPhones.

BOE is also reported to have made inroads into the iPad and MacBook production with reports that it will supply OLED panels for next-generation iPads and MacBooks. The new Apple-BOE partnership will see BOE expanding its Sichuan plant to meet the demand, as well as equipping it with the requisite power requirements.

BOE is riding on the back of a very strong performance in OLED panels’ development and production within the last year. BOE had a 60% increase in OLED production last year to cement its leading position in the market.
