Oneplus’ first foldable, Oneplus Ace, Nord 2T, and more Oneplus leaks from last week

Last week, there were multiple leaks regarding upcoming Oneplus products. Hence, we thought to put them together for our latest weekly compilation. For the unaware, we at GizmoChina, bring you a roundup article every Monday discussing select stories from the previous week.

In this week’s episode, we will talk about five Oneplus leaks. Of which, two of them are very interesting as they are regarding a foldable and a new series.

With that out of the day, let’s take a look at these leaks one by one.

Oneplus Leaks from Last Week

1. Oneplus foldable in the works

Oppo find N Review reading app
Oppo Find N (Review)

Last Friday, tipster Yogesh Brar revealed that Oneplus is working on a foldable smartphone. Unfortunately, it is not a  self-developed device. The handset is merely a copy of Oppo Find N, which is sold exclusively in China.

Hence, the upcoming Oneplus foldable phone could be just a new name for the Oppo Find N for international markets.

It is not known what Oneplus will call its first foldable smartphone. Just like other brands, the company will most likely use the ‘Fold’ branding, such as ‘Oneplus Fold’.

We are looking forward to learning about the device’s price and availability in the coming days.

2. Ace series to return with Oneplus at the helm

OnePlus 10R Render

Oppo killed the Ace series after the launch of Oppo Ace 2 in 2020. Realme’s GT series replaced this lineup offering products at multiple price points.

On Friday, a Chinese media house (Whylab) disclosed that Oneplus will bring back the Ace series from the dead. This device carries model number PGKM10 and it is nothing but a rebranded Relame GT Neo 3.

The phone will likely release as Oneplus 10R in some markets. Because we have been hearing about it for a long time and it shares almost everything with the Realme GT Neo 3.

In a nutshell, the Oneplus Ace could be limited to China, like the previous two Ace-branded handsets from Oppo. On the other hand, the Oneplus 10R may launch in India and even Europe (doubtful).

3. Oneplus Nord 2T to feature Dimensity 1300 SoC

On Friday, Mediatek quietly announced Dimensity 1300 SoC, the successor of the Dimensity 1200 chipset. A day earlier, a leak had already revealed that this chip will be present inside the upcoming Oneplus Nord 2T.

The design of the Oneplus Nord 2’s successor was also disclosed in the same leak via renders. The phone will have two large circles on the rear, however, only one of them will be fully occupied with a large OIS-enabled 50MP Sony IMX766 sensor. Whereas, the second circle will house weird-looking tiny 8MP Sony IMX355 ultra-wide unit and a 2MP monochrome sensor.

Other features of the handset will include a 32MP Sony IMX709 front-facing camera, LPDDR4x RAM, UFS 3.1 storage, 6.43-inch FHD+ AMOLED display, dual stereo speakers, alert slider, 4,500mAh battery, and 80W fast charging.

The Oneplus Nord 2T is rumored to launch in late April or early May.

4. Oneplus 10 could be powered by Dimensity 9000 SoC

OnePlus 10 Pro

On Thursday, tipster Yogesh Brar once again tweeted that Oneplus is working on a smartphone housing a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 chipset. He suggests that this phone will probably go official as the Oneplus 10.

For the first time, Oneplus didn’t release a vanilla flagship model alongside the Pro (Oneplus 10 Pro) this year. At the same, the brand is also rumored to working on an ‘Ultra’ model.

The company is yet to officially tease either of these handsets. However, the so-called Oneplus 10 Ultra is rumored to debut at the end of Q3.

5. Oneplus Nord N20 is an Oppo mid-ranger for the US

Oneplus Nord N20 | Source: PCMag

On Wednesday, PCMag exclusively revealed details about the upcoming Oneplus Nord N20. Going by the report, the upcoming Nord for the US will be nothing but a tweaked version of Oppo A96 5G sold in China.

The international OPPO A96 is already official in Southeast Asia as Oppo Reno 7Z 5G. It is expected to release in India and Europe as Oppo F21 Pro 5G and Oppo Reno7 Lite 5G respectively.

The Oneplus Nord N20 is said to debut in the US later this month with features like a 6.43-inch FHD+ AMOLED display, in-screen fingerprint sensor, Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 SoC, 64MP (wide) + 2MP (macro) + 2MP (depth) triple camera system, 16MP selfie camera, 4,500mAh battery, 33W fast charging, and OxygenOS 11 based on Android 11.

WhatsApp working on a new drawing tool feature

WhatsApp is apparently working on a new brand new feature that might be released for its app soon. The latest iOS beta build comes with a new drawing tool feature that helps tweak images on iOS.

WhatsApp

The news arrives from a WaBetaInfo report. The popular messaging platform is planning on introducing a new feature that will improve customization options for its vast userbase. At the moment, this iOS beta build version 22.8.0.73 is only available in select regions and has yet to hit the live build. But, looking at the images, we can see that it brings additional options for the scribbling feature of the drawing tool.

The WhatsApp application already offers drawing tools, but the new update will expand on the tools offered to the users. This new set of drawing tools will allow users to scribble on images or edit them with custom notes and annotations. In the past, users only had access to a single pencil for basic drawing options. But now, new screenshots shared by WaBetaInfo show three new gauges for the pencil, along with a new blur tool option in the new set.

These features might soon be arriving on the Android version of the beta build as well. WhatsApp regularly tests a lot of new features that eventually arrive in the live builds a few weeks or even months after. TSMC & other chipmaker’s semiconductor expansion plan in jeopardy over equipment delays

Due to the ongoing issue of chip shortages, many semiconductor based firms like TSMC had plans to expand their production capacity to meet the rising demand. But it seems that this plan might be pushed further back due to additional delays in securing the proper equipment for the expansion.

TSMC

According to a NikkeiAsia report, the chip makers that are planning on expanding their production capacity will have to see an additional wait time that might be around a year and a half, or possibly even longer. This delay arrive due to the long delivery time of key equipment that is needed for the expansion. In other words, the plans to alleviate the semiconductor shortage are also suffering from supply constraints as well.

As of right now, the leading chip tool manufacturers like Applied Materials, KLA, Lam Research, and ASML have warned their customers that the wait time for certain crucial machines might be up to 18 months long. Furthermore, multiple sources have also told NikkeiAsia that the supply constraints have caused shortages in practically everything, ranging from lenses, valves, and pumps to microcontrollers, engineering plastics and even electronic modules as well.

Apple

This means that leading foundries like TSMC, Intel, Samsung, and others will see delays in their expansion plans. For those unaware, firms like TSMC already had planned to have plants go online as soon as next year. But now, sources believe that the long lead times might affect their original plans. Thus, executives at UMC, Samsung, and more have started sending senior executives overseas to urge equipment makers to raise their efforts for faster deliveries.

Apple starts iPhone 13 production in India

Apple has begun the assembly of one of its latest smartphones in India. The production of the iPhone 13 has started in the Foxconn factory that is situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, a state in South India.

Apple iPhone 13 Dark Green Leak

Notably, the mass production of the latest iPhones comes after the Cupertino based giant had begun trial production for the iPhone 13 back in December 2021. Back then, it was assumed that volume production for the model will start by February 2022. Although, this had been postponed till April. This is great news for Apple customers in India since local production would have the device’s cost drop by a noticeable margin.

When the brand first started making the iPhone 12 locally in India, the model saw a price slash of 14,000 INR (roughly 185 US Dollars). For those unaware, India charges tech companies custom duties for consumer electronic products that are assembled overseas and are imported. Thus, Apple products usually cost more in India when compared to other markets. So, we can also expect the iPhone 13 to see a price cut soon, once the brand begins to sell the locally assembled units in the Indian market.

Apple

The iPhone 13 joins other products from the company that is being assembled in the country. As of right now, the brand manufactures the iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and now the iPhone 13 in the nation. Interestingly, this also marks a major shift in production away from China, which has typically been its primary hub for production. In recent years, Apple has tried in reducing its dependence on China. So, this move is in line with its ongoing efforts.

Ola faces scrutiny from Indian Govt over its S1 Pro’s fire accident

The Indian government is apparently probing Ola for answers regarding its e-scooters. An S1 Pro model caught fire in the country, and it seems that the incident has also caught the government’s attention.

Ola S1 catches fire

Earlier this month, a senior government official stated that the company has to offer explanations for its electric scooter that had recently caught fire in Pune last month. For those unaware, a video of an Ola S1 Pro model went viral when it burst into flames. This caused people to have doubts about the electric scooter’s safety standards. Since then, the local government has ordered a probe last month.

Now, Giridhar Aramane, Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, said that “If required, the government may call Ola Electric to explain the incident.” Furthermore, the incident in Pune was not an isolated event. Recently, we had also reported on the new electric vehicle running in reverse mode at 90kmph due to a software glitch. As per the road transport ministry, the Centre for Fire, Explosive, and Environmental Safety (CFEES) has been assigned to investigate this incident and propose remedial actions to prevent such accidents in the future.

Ola
The scooter was first engulfed in smoke before the fire

According to a 91Mobiles report, the reason behind the fiery accident is likely the poor lithium ion battery that powers the EV. The Ola S1 Pro’s battery might be faulty or damaged and there may be trouble with its thermal runaway, which could be highly flammable and difficult to control. Ola CEO, Bhavin Aggarwal, stated that “safety is top priority. We’re investigating this and will fix it”.

The Piaggio 1 Feng Chen Wang edition is available at Piaggio dealerships for $3,297 for the 1 version and $3,956 for the 1 Active version.Piaggio 1 Feng Chen Wang edition

The design of the Feng Chen Wang edition of the Piaggio 1 e-scooter was inspired by the designer’s hometown of Fujan in China. There are also some bits of inspiration from her present city, London where she currently operates from. The body of the e-scooter reflects China’s natural landscapes coated using traditional Chinese brushstroke techniques. The green and white colors are partly inspired by the phoenix in Chinese folklore. The overall design projects a graceful and sleek movement of the e-scooter.

An accompanying scooter helmet and a capsule collection of unisex apparel have also been designed by Feng. The collection is produced from recycled materials in an innovative manner to bring the garments to life. The sustainable collection was showcased last year during the Shanghai Fashion Week. It is unclear at this time whether the Feng Chen Wang Piaggio 1 e-scooter will be globally available or limited to its home market of China.

ARM to be Listed in the US NASDAQ Stock Market Soon amid Tensions with ARM China

ARM Processors are the foundations for all mobile chipsets we see today. Whether it be a Qualcomm Snapdragon, MediaTek Dimensity, Apple Silicon or Samsung Exynos chipset, chances are that all the aforementioned technologies are using ARM’s technology which includes its wildly popular ARM Cortex CPU Cores and ARM Mali GPUs.

In the early 2020s, Nvidia initially had plans to acquire the British semiconductor design company, ARM Limited, from its parent company, Softbank Group, the Japanese technology conglomerate headquartered in Tokyo for over 40 billion USD. However, Nvidia’s plan was disrupted due to rising regulatory conflicts with the US government and the acquisition was terminated in February 2022.

The aftermath of this was that Softbank now values its ARM chip-making business as more crucial to the entire tech industry. So valuable in fact, that Softbank is actually considering listing its ARM business as an entity on the US NASDAQ Stock Market to gain more funding to further develop the company.

According to Nikkei Asia, industry sources say that SoftBank wanted the NASDAQ IPO(Initial Public Offering) to take place by the end of March 2023, meaning that ARM needs to complete auditing between June and September this year, as per NASDAQ listing procedures.

However, ARM has one problem that has yet to be resolved to complete its internal organisation auditing, which is its tense relationship with ARM China, the Chinese subsidiary of ARM.

ARM China

Ever since 2020, ARM has struggled to regain control of ARM China as the subsidiary’s head, Allen Wu, has refused to relinquish power despite a 7-1 board vote in June 2020 to kick him out. The spat has made it difficult for ARM to audit the financials of the company, creating a major stumbling block to an initial public offering in the US.

Because of this, ARM decided to now transfer its shares in its wayward China joint venture to a special purpose vehicle that it jointly owns with its parent SoftBank Group Corp. A partner at the U.S. law firm Katten Muchin Rosenman, Han Lijie, commented that creating a special purpose vehicle that will not be part of the offering will allow ARM to indirectly hold ARM China shares. That means it can treat ARM China as an investment rather than a subsidiary when reporting financials.

The move by ARM is seen to be clever, as it is now able to speed up its plans to go public if it decides to list in the US.

LG Gram +View 16-inch WQXGA portable monitor launched for $349

LG has launched a monitor in the LG Gram series and it is a +view 16-inch WQXGA screen. Together with its accompanying stand, the USB-C powered LG Gram 16-inch monitor weighs less than 1kg. Unlike the previous models in the Gram series of laptops, the new model is a monitor that can be connected via a USB-C cable.LG Gram+view 16MQ70 Portable Monitor

The new LG Gram +view 16MQ70 has an IPS panel (2560 x 1600 pixels) that is 16 inches wide. It is unlike the existing 15.6 inches monitors as it offers a more balanced and square screen ratio. The new LG Gram monitor has a WQXGA screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio. The higher aspect ratio affords extra vertical resolution and better productivity than the prevalent 16:9 aspect ratio. The LG Gram +view 16MQ70 has the same screen specification as the 2022 LG Gram laptop and we expect a remarkable output.LG Gram+view 16MQ70 Portable Monitor

While the monitor itself weighs 670g, the Folio cover/ stand is about 320g, bringing the total weight of the product to be 990g. The cover is a great addition to the monitor as it provides a solid balance and leverage to prop it according to the user’s choice. It is noted that the LG Gram new monitor has a pretty low refresh rate of 60Hz and a response time of 30ms. These properties could make the monitor sluggish, especially in gaming applications. Users can prop the monitor up to 170 degrees for a variety of viewing angles.LG Gram+view 16MQ70 Portable Monitor

Other features of the LG Gram +view 16MQ70 monitor include auto pivot display, OSD, anti-glare screen coating, low blue light mode, 2 USB-C ports, and a brightness adjuster. The monitor however lacks speakers, as the user may have to use external speakers for applications. The new LG Gram monitor will be available in Japan from mid-April. Other markets will also follow including the US where it is already listed for $349.

Chinese-American multinational technology corporation, Lenovo, had earlier revealed its premium business laptop line, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 and ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 7 equipped with Intel’s latest 12th Gen Alder Lake Mobile CPUs back in January this year at the CES 2022 roadshow held at the Las Vegas Convention Centre.

4 months after the announcement, the Intel 12th Gen ThinkPad X1 series is finally available for sale in several popular markets across the globe, which include the US, UK, Australia, Europe and Southeast Asia.

In the US, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 is now officially available at USD 2879 for the base model, while the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 7 is sold starting at USD 3579.

Do note that this is the recommended retail price for the laptops as Lenovo ThinkPad relatively go on sale quite often.

For the Europe and Southeast Asia release, the 12th Gen Intel ThinkPad X1 series is currently only released in several key markets such as the Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. The 12th Gen Intel ThinkPad X1 series officially starts at 1949 Euros(excl. VAT) / CHF 1859 (incl. VAT) / SGD 3259 / THB 72,390 / RM 7979 in each respective country.

So competing in the premium business ultrabook category, what features does the Intel 12th Gen ThinkPad X1 series pack to justify its price tag?

ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10

The X1 Carbon has always been one of Lenovo’s best engineered business laptops with its svelte, durable chassis that is certified MIL-STD 810H standard durability compliant. This means the laptop is able to withstand extreme temperature, extreme dust, extreme humidity, pressure and more.

The new generation of the X1 Carbon is configurable up to Intel’s latest 12th Gen Core i7 P-series or U-Series mobile processors which claims to bring 1.5x better power efficiency than the previous generation. Accompanying the CPU is up to 32GB LPDDR5 5200Mhz dual-channel RAM and Up to 2TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD storage, for the fastest performance for day-to-day tasks.

However, the biggest upgrade for the X1 Carbon Gen 10 is the display. Lenovo had added a new OLED display option for the X1 Carbon, making it the first-ever ThinkPad to sport an OLED display. The display is a 14-inch 2.8K (2880 x 1800) OLED display. It can go up to 400 nits of brightness and cover 100% of the DCI P3 colour gamut.

As for ports, the X1 Carbon has 2 USB-C Thunderbolt™ 4 ports, 2 USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, one HDMI 2.0b port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The laptop is powered by a 57Wh battery with support for 65W USB-PD Rapid Charging.

ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 7

The ThinkPad X1 Yoga possesses many identical specs to the X1 Carbon. The only major differentiator here is that it is a “Yoga” laptop. The X1 Yoga is a 2-in-1 business convertible laptop that allows the users to switch from laptop to tablet to tent mode in under a minute. Whether you want to sketch or sign a document on the go, the X1 Yoga has an included Lenovo stylus that can always accommodate your workflow.
