vivo X70 Pro beats iPhone 13 in DxOMarks camera test

The Chinese smartphone maker vivo launched the global variant of the vivo X70 Pro back in September. The device was recently put through the DxOMark camera test where it managed to score 131 points, topping the chart in the premium smartphone category.

vivo X70 Pro DXOmark

In the DxOMark camera test, the vivo X70 Pro (MediaTek variant) achieved a notable score of 131 points. Its camera scored 139 points, while its zoom and video scores reached 77 and 111 points, respectively. Through these scores, the X70 Pro secured the top position in DxOMark’s premium smartphone camera list, dethroning the iPhone 13. The X70 Pro currently sits at the 12th spot on the DXOmark’s global rankings for smartphone cameras.

Looking at the tests, the device showed great performance when it came to exposure of the shots in low light and offers a wide dynamic range. The camera produces nice colors and captures well-detailed images in low light. The X70 Pro also offers accurate autofocus, a wide depth of field, accurate white balance on ultra-wide camera, and good details at medium-range telephoto shots.

While shooting videos, the X70 Pro provides good exposure, accurate white balance, and satisfactory details in bright light. The camera also offers effective stabilization of video.

vivo X70 Pro DXOmark

However, DxOMark found the white balance lacking in indoors and low light photos. The finer details in high contrast scenes suffer from clipping issues and the shots are observed to have slight noise in all conditions. Some major issues found in the tests were the shutter lag and sudden resolution drops in consecutive pictures in telephoto mode. While filming in low light, autofocus is unstable and videos lack detail.

Despite these flaws, the vivo X70 Pro has claimed the camera performance crown in the premium smartphone category and has set a record high camera score in this segment.

OPPO Find X5 Pro may be the first to feature Dimensity 9000 SoC

Earlier this week we reported that the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC is expected to launch in the first half of 2022 and will be featured in upcoming Redmi and OPPO devices. Now, a new report has emerged giving a more precise time frame for the SoC launch as well as the first device that is expected to come with the Dimensity 9000 chip.

MediaTeK Dimensity 9000

According to a report by ITHomeMediaTek will be launching their Dimensity 9000 flagship SoC sometime in the month of February-March. OPPO’s upcoming flagship is expected to be the first device to house the new SoC.

Previous leaks have revealed that OPPO is working on its next flagship dubbed the Find X4 Pro; however, the upcoming flagship might be named the OPPO Find X5 Pro due to number 4 being considered an unlucky number in China

So far, the rumored specs of the upcoming OPPO Find X5 Pro reveal that the phone will come with a 6.7-inch AMOLED LTPO 2.0 display that offers a Quad HD+ resolution of 1440 x 3216 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate.

The rear camera setup of the device is fitted with a 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 primary camera with OIS support. It is coupled with a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens and a 13-megapixel tertiary camera. For selfies, the display punch-hole of the X5 Pro will house a 32-megapixel Sony IMX709 camera.

It will be packed with a 5,000mAh battery that supports 80W fast charging and 50W wireless charging. The device is likely to run on the latest Android 12 with ColorOS 12 on top. For security, it will feature Goodix G7 in-screen fingerprint scanner.

Earlier reports state that the  Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC will be powering the device along with OPPO’s MariSilicon X chip. However, if the latest leaks are to be believed, the OPPO X5 Pro might ditch the SD 8 Gen 1 in favor of the upcoming Dimensity 9000 chipset.

The MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC adopts the combination of TSMC’s 4nm process + Armv9 architecture and has a high-performance Cortex-X2 super core. The SoC also consists of three Arm Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.85GHz and four Arm Cortex-A510 energy-efficient cores. Additionally, the Dimensity 9000 supports LPDDR5X memory.

Entire iPhone 14 lineup could feature 120Hz display, 6GB RAM: Report

In September 2021, Apple released the iPhone 13 series out of which, the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max carry the 120Hz refresh rate LTPO panel but the vanilla iPhone 13 and 13 Mini models are still stuck on the traditional 60Hz refresh rate. Now, as per recent leaks, the entire upcoming iPhone 14 lineup will feature the 120Hz refresh rate panel.

iPhone 14 render featured

As per a MacRumors report, Analyst Jeff Pu outlined that all iPhone 14 models will feature a 120Hz LTPO ProMotion display.

For those unaware, Apple’s ProMotion display is basically its name for the adaptive refresh rate technology. ProMotion allows the refresh rate to change from 120Hz to 10Hz depending on the content being displayed on the screen. So a static website will be played at a 10Hz refresh rate and a game at a 120Hz refresh rate. This allows for battery conservation by reducing the screen’s refresh rate when not needed.

Previously, Pu had also predicted that iPhone 14 Pro models would have an increased RAM of 8GB but based on supply chain sources, he has now speculated that all four iPhone 14 models will be equipped with 6GB of RAM because of the cost considerations.

Although this means nothing when you consider the current pro models, however, an increase to 6GB RAM would be great for standard iPhone 14 models as well as the rumored iPhone 14 max.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Render

Previous rumors have also hinted that the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro will have a pill-shaped front camera cutout instead of the wider notch to house the front-facing camera. But a later report states that there will be two cutouts on the iPhone Pro, one pill-shaped cutout and another punch-hole cutout. These cutouts are said to house the front camera as well as the Face ID sensors.

Other than the screen, the iPhone 14 Pro is also expected to come with a 48MP main camera sensor which will be the largest resolution sensor on an iPhone yet.

Xiaomi 12 Ultra to feature a 5x periscope telephoto lens

Xiaomi is expected to launch the Xiaomi 12 Ultra soon and the device is appearing on more leaks lately. Last time, the popular tipster DigitalChatStation revealed that the phone may have a similar camera setup to that of its predecessor. Now, he suggests that out of its rumored quad-camera system, one of the lenses will be a 5x periscope camera.

If the Xiaomi 12 Ultra gets a 5x periscope telephoto lens, it will be one of the first few Chinese phones to come with such an optical zooming range in the market this year. Earlier, the tipster revealed that almost no phone in the market has a good zooming range when it comes to telephoto sensors. Most of the devices are stuck at 3x to 3.3x optical zoom, like the recently released OnePlus 10 Pro.

Xiaomi 12 Ultra 5x periscope lens

Now, the upcoming Xiaomi 12 Ultra may bring a relatively better telephoto sensor. Rumors are also rife that Xiaomi may implement its in-house Surge chip in the 12 Ultra. In addition to this, the phone’s cameras are said to be powered by Leica optics.

For those unaware, the Xiaomi 12 Ultra is touted to come with four cameras at the back. As per the leaked renders, it could be a circular camera housing. Furthermore, our recent case leak showed the phone’s front profiles as well.

The smartphone is expected to have a 6.6-inch AMOLED panel with a 2K resolution. This time around, there won’t be a secondary screen like its predecessor. It will be powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC and feature a crazy fast 120W wired fast charging solution. The phone may have fast wireless charging, similar to its sibling, the Xiaomi 12.

Xiaomi 12 Ultra’s launch continues to be a mystery, however, it is rumored to debut after the Chinese Spring festival. So, expect a launch by the end of February.

70mai Dash Cam Pro Plus+ Review: Make your car smarter!

Those of you who drive should know that Dash Cam can save you a lot of trouble in various traffic accidents and can protect your own safety and interests. The premise is that the Dash Cam must be good enough to record all the details of what happens. This Dash Cam, 70mai Dash Cam Pro Plus+, after I have experienced it for a while, I think this Dash Cam is very close to my ideal perfect Dash Cam.

70mai Dash Cam Pro Plus+ Review 02

Maybe you guys don’t know much about the brand 70mai. They were founded in 2016 and specialize in smart car electronics products. They have their own R&D department and factory, with Dash Cams ranging from beginner models to premium 4k resolution with drivers-assistance models. Furthermore, they pay a lot of attention to product design. They have won iF and Red Dot awards. You may have heard of their best-selling Dash Cam, 70mai Dash Cam Pro. And this 70mai Dash Cam Pro Plus+ is its fully upgraded model. Here’s a table so you can clearly see where exactly it’s been upgraded.

70mai Dash Cam Pro Plus+ Review SPECS comparison

The usual rules first look at the unboxing. In addition to a front and a rear Dash Cam, the package also includes some USB cable, a Wiring Crowbar, Camera Holder, Dual USB Car Charger and some Sticker. If you buy the Hardwire Kit, you will also receive a pack of cables. Ensures power for the Dash Cam to continue operating while the car is parked.

70mai Dash Cam Pro Plus+ Review in action The Front Dash Cam has a very simple design and the frosted surface feels great. There is only one 2-inch screen and five buttons on the back. The sides are DC/IN port, AV/IN port and Macro SD Card slot. both front and rear Dash Cam lens parts can be rotated close to 90°, you can easily adjust the angle, so you don’t have to care too much about the position when installing the Dash Cam.

My ideal Dash Cam must take footage with a wide and clear field of view. 70mai Dash Cam Pro Plus+ uses a Sony sensor that supports 1944P recording, and with a 140° ultra-wide-angle lens, it is no problem to meet my needs. And even when the sun is shining directly on the Dash Cam, it is also able to ensure that the footage will not be affected by the sun to become too dark. The F1.8 aperture and 6P lens ensure more light intake and stronger anti-glare capability.

If you have the budget, you can also buy its rear camera. The rear camera is relatively ordinary, a 1080p 130° Wide Angle Camera, but considering that you only need to add about $20 to get an additional Rear Camera that can access the Front Camera, I think it’s worth it. And as you can see, the lens quality is also good, with it to protect your butt should be more than enough.

70mai Dash Cam Pro Plus+ Review in action 2 record

I wouldn’t call the 70mai Dash Cam Pro Plus+ ” close to perfect” if it only did a good job of basic footage recording. It adds all the features you can think of, and is probably the most comprehensive Dash Cam I’ve ever seen. I’ll pick a few things to talk about.

Have you heard of ADAS? The full name is “Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems”. The ADAS detects your surroundings and uses voice alerts to warn you of safety problems. For example, if it recognizes vehicles ahead of you, it can measure the distance to prevent forward collisions. 70mai Dash Cam Pro Plus+ Review 06

Unlike the previous Dash Cam, you don’t need to remove the Macro SD Card if you want to view footage on your computer or phone. It has a built-in Wi-Fi module that allows you to view footage directly on your phone, or you can download it. It also has a built-in GPS, you can also view your trip on the app. It’s really convenient.

The 70mai Dash Cam Pro Plus+ is also able to perform 24-Hour Parking Surveillance. It can keep monitoring when you are away. It can start recording when a collision is detected. It can also record time-lapse, up to 45 hours on a 16G SD card. However, all of the above features require you to purchase a Hardwire Kit and install it. We recommend watching this official demo video to see the installation process. And you need to pay attention to the car’s battery to use these features, too long without starting the car will lead to an empty battery.

The only regret I think is that the 70mai Dash Cam Pro Plus+ does not support Voice Control anymore. The previous Dash Cam Pro supported this function. But considering the infrequent use, the absence of this feature is also acceptable.

70mai Dash Cam Pro Plus+ Review SPECS

Why I think the 70mai Dash Cam Pro Plus+ is the almost perfect Dash Cam in my mind, because it records clearly, it’s easy to use, and it’s important that even you buy all the accessories it costs less than $100. Yes, we could find better Dash Cams than the 70mai Dash Cam Pro Plus+ if we wanted to. But at this price point, no one can beat it overall.

Hisense Exec claims TV Price Wars is hampering innovation in the industry

Television technology has come a long way ever since its invention. From the old box-shaped CRT television that could only show “black and white” video, to the current market standard of slim and big-screen smart TVs that are able to show over 10 billion colours on screen at Full HD, 2K, 4K and if you are ambitious enough, 8K as well.

At Hisense’s official launch event for its first in-house 8K AI GPU chip on January 11, Hisense Vice President, Yu Zhitao boldly claimed that the television industry globally will undergo a massive wave of change in trends in the coming years. Yu claims that the picture quality of the TV shows and live streams shown on-screen will determine the purchase decision of an interested buyer to purchase the TV or not.

Hisense QLED TV Teaser Flipkart Big Billion Dales Sale India 01

The Popular TV manufacturer, Hisense also foresees the coming future where TV manufacturers stop focusing to compete on screen size and sales numbers but instead focus on their smart graphics processing units(GPUs) and the sound system of their TVs due to changing consumer demands throughout the industry as a whole.

Yu mentions the two important reasons why Hisense has this prediction for the future of the TV industry. The reasons are that the TV industry is already reaching the limit of bigger screens and because of TV manufacturers playing the game of price wars amongst each other.

LG

The trend of large-screen TVs in the industry is already popular due to many years of advertising from TV manufacturers saying that a larger TV allows for a more complete multimedia viewing experience. However, large-screen TVs have their limitations. When the screen is larger, and the shows are not upscaled to higher definitions, the consumers will start to notice the imperfections of their large-screen experience like more noticeable lower resolution, and colors being washed out due to lower pixel density. With that in mind, the GPU in a TV is more important than ever to enhance the TV watching experience.

Yu mentions that the category of 75 inches and above large-screen TVs has grown exponentially in the past few years and that as we are approaching 100 inches for our TVs, users now need better GPU rendering than ever to upscale and support a higher resolution like 8K. Hisense is already prepared as it has just developed its first in-house 8K AI GPU chip recently.

The last reason is the fierce but unhealthy competition between TV manufacturers, which Hisense refers to as the TV price wars. To illustrate, TV manufacturers advertise their product as a large-screen TV at an affordable and cheap price tag, and this price-to-screen size ratio seems to be what they are only focusing on. The “bigger screens, lower price” trend has made the market value of the TV industry trend lower, the revenue stream of manufacturers to trend lower, and stifled innovation in the TV industry as well.

Hisense TVs 2022
HiSense Lineup of TVs in 2022

In the end, Hisense emphasizes that if the TV industry transition to high-quality TVs that focus on other aspects like color accuracy, screen quality, and more complete sound systems, plus a transition from unhealthy pricing wars to healthy value wars (where the TV is bought on the basis of the value it provides to the viewing experience), then the industry will still have a future amongst other technology products like laptops, tablets, and smartphones as well.

Samsung will reportedly launch TVs with LG Display’s OLED panels later this year

As an indication of the growing prominence of LG Display, the company’s OLED panels are reported to be deployed by Samsung in some of its TVs from 2022. LG Display is the display arm of LG Electronics and it has witnessed a surge in the demand for its products recently. During the just-concluded CES 2022, LG Display showcased some of its innovative and expansive panels to global attention including Q-LED and OLED.

This year, Samsung will release new TV models that use LG Display’s white W-OLED panels, the Elec reports. Samsung already has a contract with LG Display for the supply of W-OLED panels for part of its 2022 TV lineup. Samsung CEO Han Jong-hee had said during CES 2022 that the company was open to buying OLED panels from LG Display.

However, there are indications that the discussions between both parties may have hit a snag. This has led to a delayed possible release of the Samsung TVs with LG’s W-OLED panels in May as earlier scheduled. The delay has also resulted in Samsung’s postponement of its plan to inform global TV distributors of its shipment plans for W-OLED TVs. There was thus no mention of the issue during CES 2022, despite earlier plans in the direction.

The source hints that Samsung has agreed to price terms with LG Display and the panels will be sold at par with the price at which LG Display sells to LG Electronics.

Earlier, it had been hinted that Samsung plans to buy around 2 million units of the LG W-OLED panels and ship 1.5 million units of the TVs, and it seems the plans remain unchanged. In total, Samsung will produce 2 million OLED TVs this year.

It is also possible to have the strengthened glass adorn both the front and back of the devices. The Galaxy S21 and S21+ both had a plastic back although the Galaxy S21+ had the Victus on both sides.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra will certainly have more nuanced features than the other two models and tips Ice Universe says it will come with what was termed super clear glass in the leaked specs sheet. The reinforced glass will help to reduce reflection and glare in the device.

There are speculated color variants for the S22 and S22+ including pink gold, green, black and white, while the Ultra could be available in Burgundy, green, black, and white colors. As the unveiling of the Galaxy S22 series inches closer, it will continue to be a subject of much speculation and leaks.

Vivo NEX 5 to come with a 5x telephoto lens, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, and a phablet-like screen

Back in July 2021, a rumor revealed that Vivo may launch the Vivo NEX 5 in 2022. Well, we’re in 2022, and the tipster DigitalChatStation has already revealed the phone’s key highlights. The tipster sheds light on its cameras while pointing at its internal hardware.

The tipster reveals that the recently launched Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 powered phones have a lower zooming range in their telephoto lenses. The optical zooming capability of these lenses doesn’t go too far. However, with the upcoming Vivo NEX 5, things may change. The smartphone may have a 5x periscope lens, as per the tipster.

Vivo NEX 5

Having said that, the phone will indeed come powered by the latest 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen chipset. The other hardware details are unknown at the moment. But coming back to cameras, previously, ZEISS was touted to be in partnership with Vivo for its upcoming phone cameras. Vivo’s NEX 5 could be the device where we may see the ZEISS branded lenses.

Moreover, reports suggest that the NEX 5 may come with a mammoth 7-inch display. It could be a curved panel with an under-display camera. It is worth noting that some of the past rumors claimed a 6.78-inch screen. Hence, we cannot conclude anything as of now.

In terms of other features, the smartphone may come with a 50W wireless fast charging support. But again, these specs aren’t confirmed, and we recommend our readers to take it with pinch of salt.

Design

Which handset features the best design? Personal tastes play an important role while trying to answer this question. I personally prefer the Paper Green and the Paper White color options of the Realme GT 2 Pro because their back cover is made with a special bio-based polymer resembling the touch & feel of the paper. It is a unique and more sustainable material if compared to plastic etc. But you can get great added values by choosing the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G: it is made of plastic so it looks less impressive but is a more compact phone and it features the IP68 certification thanks to which it is dustproof and waterproof.

Display

The Realme GT 2 Pro features the most advanced display, there is definitely no doubt about this. It has an AMOLED panel with one billion colors and the LTPO 2.0 technology enabling an adaptive refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz and providing very low energy consumption. The panel has a Quad HD+ resolution of 1440 x 3216 pixels, the HDR10+ certification, and a diagonal of 6.7 inches. The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G has a smaller 6.4-inch diagonal and less impressive specifications: it is an AMOLED display with a Full HD+ resolution, HDR10+, and a max refresh rate of 120 Hz (non-adaptive), as well as just 16 million colors. Both the phones feature an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Specs & Software

The Realme GT 2 Neo is the winner even when it comes to performance. It is fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 mobile platform built at 4 nm with a max frequency of 3 GHz. The chip is paired with up to 12 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. While the Realme GT 2 Pro comes with the 2022 flagship SoC by Qualcomm, the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G is still powered by the 2021 flagship Snapdragon 888, and in some markets, it has the even weaker Exynos 2100. The maximum amount of RAM is 8 GB, while the internal storage goes up to 256 GB. Realme GT 2 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G run Android 12 with a highly-customized user interface.

Camera

The 50 MP main camera of the Realme GT 2 Pro (a Sony IMX766 sensor with OIS) is actually superior to the 12 MP one found on the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G, and it is the same for the 50 MP ultrawide lens (the S21 has a 12 MP ultrawide camera). The Samsung flagship killer is superior only when it comes to zoom capabilities, thanks to an 8 MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and OIS. Unfortunately, the Realme handset lacks a telephoto camera: it is replaced by a 3 MP microscope sensor.

Battery

Realme GT 2 Pro is equipped with a bigger battery than Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G: with a capacity of 5000 mAh, it will most likely provide a longer battery life in several scenarios. It even features a faster charging technology with a power of 65W, but it lacks wireless charging, unlike its rival.

Price

Realme GT 2 Pro starts from €650/$740 in the Chinese market and we still do not know how much it will cost globally. The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G costs €750/$855 in the global market (prices vary depending on the region). While the S21 FE adds wireless charging and a waterproof body, the Realme GT 2 Pro wins this comparison because the remaining specifications are actually superior: it has better hardware, a better display, more interesting cameras, and even a bigger battery with faster charging.

Nonetheless, it has a USB Type-C for fast charging and data transfer. The phone has a dual-SIM slot and supports Bluetooth v5.0 and Wi-Fi.

Samsung patents a laptop that folds twice!

From foldable phones to rollable smartwatches, Samsung has constantly innovated in the field of foldable screen tech. And now, the company has patent a foldable laptop. Foldable twice that is.

According to a new report by LetsGoDigital, Samsung has patented a new multi-foldable laptop that folds not once but twice. The patent reveals that the concept works with the user first folding (closing) their laptop like normal and then folding it once again on itself from the center.

Image via LetsGoDigital

The keyboard of the laptop is split through the middle with a folding hinge placed in between. The screen will probably use Samsung’s foldable OLED panel that the brand teased earlier this year. The screen will also have a hinge placed vertically in the middle allowing the device to fold a second time with the base of the laptop ending up as the outer part of the device on both front and back ends.

As a result, you get a square-shaped piece of high-tech sandwich that’s much more portable than a regular laptop. One factor to keep in mind would be the laptop’s thickness and it will effectively double when completely folded.

Additionally, another interesting aspect of this laptop would be its production cost as the tech applied to make it fold twice probably won’t come cheap.

However, the laptop has just got its patent approved which doesn’t necessarily mean Samsung is currently working on this or has a plan to introduce it in the market. However, the concept does seem intriguing and we will keep an eye on it to report any notable developments, so stay tuned.
