Snapdragon 898 found running on mysterious phone, key details emerge

Qualcomm is likely to announce the next flagship chipset for mobile devices through the Tech Summit event in December. The SoC that will be succeeding the Snapdragon 888 that powered many Android flagship phones this year is being tentatively called the Snapdragon 898. Tipster Digital Chat Station shared an image of a mysterious phone powered by the SD898 chip. The image shows the phone running a benchmarking app named Device Info HW that confirms some of the key details of Qualcomm’s upcoming flagship chip.

As can be seen in the image, the model number of Qualcomm’s next flagship chip is sm8450. The SoC has a tri-cluster architecture featuring Cortex X2 prime core working at 3.0GHz. It is accompanied by three Cortex-A710 cores working at 2.5Ghz, and four Cortex-A510 power-efficient cores clocking at 1.79GHz.

For graphics, the SoC is equipped with Adreno 730 GPU. While it is not mentioned in the screenshots, reports have claimed that the chipset will include the Snapdragon X65 5G modem that is said to offer 10Gbps of downlink speeds.

Snapdragon 898 benchmarking app screngrab

There is no word on the name of the device that can be seen in the screenshot. It is equipped with slim bezels, but its top design is not clearly visible. Probably, it features a punch-hole at the top-center position.

Xiaomi and Vivo are the two brands that are expected to announce a Snapdragon 898 SoC powered flagship phone as early as next month. Last year, Xiaomi had announced the Xiaomi Mi 11 5G with Snapdragon 888 in December 2020. Hence it is likely that it could be succeeded by the Xiaomi 12 in the coming month.

Vivo’s Snapdragon 898 powered flagship was spotted at Geekbench back in September. It is unclear whether it will be an X-series or a NEX branded model.

Google to start allowing third-party in-app payments in South Korea

A few weeks ago, the South Korean government had passed an amendment to the country’s Telecommunications Business Act which now prohibits Google and Apple from forcing their own payment solutions on developers.

Now, to comply with the new law, Google has announced that it will allow developers to add an alternative in-app billing system in South Korea. Along with the developer’s chosen billion systems, the Google Play Store‘s billing system will also be available.

Google Logo Featured

This new change will be applicable for both mobile as well as tablet users in South Korea. Users will be able to choose which payment or billing system to use for the in-app billing during the checkout process.

Google is also warning users that the alternative billing systems may not provide the same protections or features that the company’s own billing system offers. Currently, the tech giant’s billing system offers several payment options, including gift cards and Play Points along with the usual set of options.

The company has said that it will be sharing implementation details for developers in the coming weeks and months. While Google has not provided an exact timeline for this, it’s safe to assume that the alternative in-app billing system will go live next year in Korea.

Apple still doesn’t allow third-party payments for the app or in-app purchases and says that alternate payment options would increase financial risks for users. Last month, the company pushed back against the rule change, claiming that it didn’t need to change anything in its system.

Redmi Note 11 Pro+ vs Samsung Galaxy M52 5G: Specs Comparison

For the first time ever, the Redmi Note series has a Pro+ variant. Its name is Redmi Note 11 Pro+ and its killer feature is the incredibly fast charging speed. But besides that, the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ is also one of the most complete mid-rangers in the current market. Is it the best device you can get in its price range or there are good competitors? There is no better way to understand it than comparing it to the most amazing phones sold in the same price range. Today it is the turn of the Samsung Galaxy M52 5G being the rival of the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ in this specs comparison. If you want more, stay tuned in the next few days for other comparisons including the Redmi Note 11 Pro+.

Design

Do you prefer having a better design or better materials? If your answer is the first, then Samsung Galaxy M52 5G offers something more, in my honest opinion. It has a cleaner design with a camera module coming with the same color as the rest of the rear side. Further, it is a thinner and lighter phone than Redmi Note 11 Pro+. But the latter has a glass back just like premium phones, and its front glass is protected by Gorilla Glass 5. It is a bit more compact, but it is thicker and heavier than Samsung Galaxy M52 5G.

Display

The displays of the Redmi Note 11 Pro Plus and the Samsung Galaxy M52 5G are more or less at the same level. They both come with the AMOLED technology and a Full HD+ resolution, as well as a high 120 Hz refresh rate. The Redmi Note 11 Pro+ adds the HDR10 certification which helps provide a higher image quality on streaming platforms, while the panel of the Galaxy M52 5G is dubbed Super AMOLED Plus due to its better image reproduction if compared to other AMOLED panels. Note that despite being AMOLED, these phones have a side-mounted fingerprint reader instead of an in-display biometric sensor. The audio provided by the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ is louder thanks to its stereo speakers tuned by JBL, while Galaxy M52 5G has just a mono speaker.

Hardware/Software

Here we got a very interesting battle: Mediatek Dimensity 920 5G vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G. According to benchmarks, the Snapdragon 778G mobile platform found on the Samsung Galaxy M52 5G is slightly more powerful than the Dimensity 920 found on the Redmi Note 11 Pro+. On the other hand, you can get a higher amount of internal storage with the Redmi Note 11 Pro+: up to 256 GB of UFS 2.2 storage. Given the marginal differences between the hardware departments, we believe the amount of storage is a more relevant detail if you need 256 GB. The phones run Android 11 out of the box with heavily customized user interfaces.

Camera

The Redmi Note 11 Pro+ is equipped with a better main camera: a 108 MP sensor that supports 4K video recording against the 64 MP main camera of its rival. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy M52 5G has better secondary sensors: a 12 MP ultrawide camera (instead of just 8 MP) and a 5 MP macro camera (instead of 2 MP). Last but not least, the Galaxy M52 5G has a way better front camera with a 32 MP resolution.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy M52 5G actually has a longer battery life simply because it packs a bigger battery with a capacity of 5000 mAh. Instead, the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ has faster charging speeds thanks to 120W fast charging bringing the charge from 0 to 100 percent in just 15 minutes.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro Plus vs Samsung Galaxy M52 5G: Price

The starting price of the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ in the Chinese market is about €260/$300 (still not available globally), while you need  €400/$462 or more to purchase the Samsung Galaxy M52 5G globally. For some people, the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ is a more interesting handset because it provides faster charging and a better main camera, but for others the Galaxy M52 5G may be better due to its thinner and lighter design, bigger battery, better secondary sensors, and superior processor. Which one would you pick?

The Pixel 6 Pro propels Google into DxOMark’s top 10 phone camera ranking

Google’s latest flagship Pixel 6 Pro smartphone has been ranked by DXOMark among the top 10 powerful phones according to its camera capabilities. The DxOMark ranking is based on several performance metrics that yield a final ranking of smartphone models. The broad categories are picture quality, zoom capability, and video quality.Pixel 6 Pro DXOMark

The Google Pixel 6 Pro, as per the DxOMark assessment, had a total score of 135, with 143 for the photo, 115 for video, and 71 for zoom. The Pixel 6 Pro had an impressive performance in all lighting conditions. It has a wide dynamic range, accommodating long-range shots via zoom, together with a great texture.

The detail preservation capacity of the Pixel 6 Pro was shown to outclass Apple’s flagship iPhone 13 Pro in the same lighting conditions. However, the overall DxOMark score puts the Pixel 6 Pro below the Mate 40 Pro, the iPhone 13 Pro, and the 13 Pro Max.

The assessment also highlighted some design areas that could be drawbacks of the Pixel 6 Pro camera setup. The narrow depth of field, especially in low light, impacts performance negatively. This design is commonly present in cameras with a large sensor. The assessment also showed that noise was observed in low-light situations.

In all, the DxOMark ranking of the Pixel 6 Pro is another credit to Google for its flagship offering.

MIUI finally gets Samsung ‘Edge panel’ clone called ‘Smart toolbox’

Xiaomi is the only Android OEM to release weekly beta builds of its mobile operating system MIUI based on Android. The company is known for introducing new features first in this channel. Just a few days back, we learned about the addition of a feature called ‘Front Camera Assistant’. Now, the firm has introduced yet another feature called ‘Smart toolbox’.

Xiaomi MIUI Smart Toolbox
MIUI Smart Toolbox | Source: MIUI System Updates

With the introduction of curved displays, Samsung started offering a feature called ‘Edge panel’ on its flagship smartphones. This helps users to pin certain applications and functions for quick access.

The feature is now not only available on all Samsung phones but also on handsets from other companies like OPPO. The Chinese smartphone maker calls this ‘Smart Sidebar 2.0’ in ColorOS 12.

A similar feature has finally debuted in MIUI as ‘Smart toolbox’. Xiaomi’s implementation is similar to fellow Chinese OEMs.

Users get three options to choose from. They can either access this toolbox always, during gameplay or during video playback.

If always is selected, users can quickly access pinned apps. While with the other two options, the toolbox will show tools related to gaming and videos, in addition to pinned applications.

The feature is currently in its initial stage but eventually, it may get ‘smarter’ like OPPO’s implementation. For instance, ColorOS 12’s Smart Sidebar 2.0 is capable of showing tools based on different usage scenarios.

Xiaomi is known for copying features faster than other companies. But for the first time, it is the last one to introduce a feature that’s available on almost all Android phones.

realme Pad with Snapdragon 870 to launch soon in Europe

In September, realme launched its first tablet called realme Pad in India. It is a budget tablet with a better set of features than the competition in the country. This device is expected to release in Europe. Ahead of that, a reliable tipster reveals that the variant for the old continent will come with a much better processor.

According to @_snoopytech_, the realme Pad will be launching soon in Europe. The leaker says that the device will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 SoC instead of a MediaTek Helio G80 chipset.

But interestingly, despite featuring high-end silicon, the tablet will only arrive with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. Anyway, it will have support for storage expansion via MicroSD cards.

Just like the original realme Pad, this one will also sport an 8MP rear camera, an 8MP front camera, and a 7,100mAh battery with support for 18W charging. Finally, it will not only have the same design but also the identical 440g weight.

A few days back, the product’s pricing for Europe leaked via a retailer’s listings. As per that, the realme Pad will be priced at €239, €239, and €239 for 3GB + 32GB, 4GB + 64GB, and 6GB + 128GB memory configurations respectively.

If the above-mentioned price tags and specs happen to be true, then the realme Pad will be the most affordable Snapdragon 870-powered tablet in Europe. That being said, the brand is yet to officially announce the launch date for the region.
