Semiconductor shortage leads to 6% shrink in global smartphone market

The global smartphone market is reeling under the weight of the semiconductor shortage as vendors struggle to meet demand. Samsung was the leading vendor with a 23% share. Xiaomi lost the 2nd place it had gained earlier this year after Apple grabbed it thanks to strong demand for the iPhone 13.

As a result, the Chinese smartphone giant currently stands at 3rd with a market share of 14%. The 4th and 5th rankings are currently held by vivo and OPPO currently, both with a 10% share each (via: Canalys).

Ben Stanton, Canalys Principal Analyst remarks that the chipset famine has truly arrived: “The smartphone industry is striving to maximize production of devices as best it can. On the supply side, chipset manufacturers are increasing prices to disincentivize over-ordering, in an attempt to close the gap between demand and supply.”

However, the chip shortage will likely be continuing well into 2022 despite the measures. This, combined with high global freight costs, will be pushing the device retail pricing even higher.

Along with this, the chip shortage is also prompting last-minute changes with regard to device specification and order quantities from the smartphone vendor end. This is critical for them since they have to select from the existing pool of available components.

Unfortunately though, it leads to confusion and inefficiency when communicating with retail and distributor channels, continued Stanton. Many channels are nervous heading into important sales holidays, such as Singles’ Day in China, and Black Friday in the west.

Smartphone channel supplies are already low, and as more customers anticipate similar sales cycles, the oncoming surge of demand will be impossible to meet. Customers might expect less aggressive smartphone discounts this year. Smartphone firms with tight margins, on the other hand, should consider bundling other devices, such as wearables and IoT, to provide strong incentives for customers.

As per recent reports, the latest and greatest from Qualcomm – the Snapdragon 898 – will be making its debut around mid-December. The Xiaomi 12 is expected to be one of the first models to be powered by it, if not the first, but the Samsung Galaxy S22 is still expected to be among the first batches.

And now, a reliable tipster (via: IT Home) has given us a first look at what to expect from the front of the Samsung Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+. The image shared by them is of tempered glasses for the two models, prepped in advance by an accessory manufacturer. It also shows similar tempered glasses for the S21 models, for comparison’s sake.

As apparent from the shared photo, the Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+ are expected to have rounder corners than last year’s models. But what’s cooler to see is that the phones have achieved equal bezels all around. This is something that Apple has maintained on their notched iPhone models since the very beginning. But Android flagships have preferred to keep slimmer bezels on three sides paired with a chin at the bottom.

However, if what the tempered glass is implying indeed turns out true, the S22 models will sport equal bezels all around with them also being extremely narrow.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 series is expected to go live early next year and has already obtained 3C certification in China. It shows that the models will be equipped with 25W fast charging technology.

Along with the performance, design, and display improvements, the Samsung Galaxy S22 series will be coming with upgraded cameras, just like every other iteration. The Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+ will be equipped with a 50-megapixel primary shooter that will support four-in-one pixel binning technology.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra was similarly leaked as well. But unlike the other S22 models, it will be coming with a rectangular, boxy design reminiscent of the Galaxy Note series. It will also be having stylus support.

Earlier today, the official Weibo account of realme Watch went live. The handle has published a single post so far and it does not say anything about the upcoming wearable. However, we expect to learn more about the product via this new account in the form of teasers in the coming days.

On the other hand, the tipster Digital Chat Station has revealed some details about realme’s first smartwatch for its home market. According to the leaker, this wearable will go official as realme Watch T1.

He says that the product will feature a round dial with a high refresh rate screen and a stainless steel frame. Further, it will come with two chipsets and will offer Bluetooth calling function.

Unfortunately, he doesn’t say anything about the wearable’s software. But we think it will most likely run a customized RTOS like other smartwatches sold by realme outside mainland China.

Apple MacBook Pro 2021 possible designs revealed with latest renders: slim bezels & more

Apple’s first 2021 event had its crosshairs set on the new iPhone and Apple Watch mostly, but there’s now a second one incoming. Enter the Apple ‘Unleashed’ event that’s to be held on Monday, October 18. This one will be Mac-centric and the company is expected to announce at least the MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16.

Sure, we are just a couple of days away from the event, but new leaks and renders are always welcome. Apple Tomorrow (via: Notebookcheck) has published just those on Twitter and they perhaps provide the clearest look we have had on the new MacBooks to date. The renders are based on the most recent leaks, including that Apple has switched to taller, 14:9 displays.

While the design of the new laptops is undeniably still very MacBook-ish, there have been a couple of meaningful upgrades. Firstly, the new 14:9 ratios should provide a better web scrolling experience thanks to a taller viewing area. And second, the bezels have been reduced significantly, so much so, that there’s no place to fit in the familiar ‘MacBook Pro’ labeling, although we definitely won’t be missing that.

However, not everything is a gain. Leaked schematics had suggested that this year’s models would be losing the Touch Bar that was introduced in 2016 with fourth-generation MacBook Pros, and the renders reflect on this.

But the same schematics had also shown that the new MacBook Pros would be getting more ports than the current models. As visible in the renders, the 2021 MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16 should launch with at least a full-sized HDMI port, two USB Type-C ports, and MagSafe charging.

Other than this, there has been much hype on the second iteration of Apple’s own ARM-based chip. It’s dubbed M1X and will be powering the two MacBooks. Both models are also expected to come with mini LED displays with support for 120Hz refresh rates.

Back in April 2021, it was reported that Microsoft promised to come up with the Xbox Series X mini fridge as a fallout of its success in the inaugural #BestOfTweets Brand Bracket Competition. Microsoft Xbox had defeated Skittles in the final round of the competition and the company’s marketing director promised the unveiling of the Xbox Series X mini-fridge. In June, it was also reported that the products will be available within three months. In line with the projections, the Xbox Series X mini-refrigerators will now be available to preorder from October 19 for $99.99.

The Xbox Mini fridge is a compact refrigerator with space to hold a dozen drink cans as well as two shelves inside the door compartment. It has a DC power adapter as an additional layer of power options and its USB port at the front can be used to charge other devices.

The release of the Xbox Series X mini fridge is the final confirmation that indeed the April 1 tweet promising the product was never a fluke statement. Microsoft Xbox has now matched its promise with action as the iconic mini-refrigerators are released.

The availability of the product is limited to the US, Canada, UK, and Europe and there are no signs that this could be expanded to cover other regions. The first shipments of the Xbox Series X mini-fridges will be in December 2021, with some distributional arrangements in place in the US and Canada (Target), the UK (Game), and Europe (Game Stop EU, Toynk, and Micromania).

Last week, an OPPO phone with model number PFDM00 received CMIIT certification in China. It is speculated that it could be the vanilla OPPO Reno7. Rumors have it that the company may announce the Reno7 series in November. Ahead of the rumored launch, a Chinese tipster has speculated on the specs of Reno7.

A recent leak claimed that the Reno7 series will include three models such as Reno7, Reno7 Pro, and Reno7 Pro+. These variants are likely to be powered by the Dimensity 920, Dimensity 1200, and Snapdragon 888 chipsets, respectively. At present, there is no concrete information available on the specs of the Reno7 Pro and Pro+ models.

The next Galaxy Unpacked event is scheduled for October 20 and a few big announcements could be made by Samsung during the event. Samsung could introduce the Galaxy Studio to help users to customize their Galaxy Z Flip3 smartphone, and possibly the Z Fold3. A new video by Samsung seems to confirm an earlier leak by a tipster that the Z Flip3 will have up to five color variants.

The teaser relates to the Galaxy Unpacked Part 2 event and features the Galaxy Studio as three aliens were customizing the color scheme of their costumes. The accompanying tweet stated that users should get ready to unfold something unmistakably “you”.

The tweet was cryptic but with other details and leaks already available, it looks unmistakably clear that the Galaxy foldables could be the focus of the new Samsung teaser. The Galaxy Studio will be launched probably during the October 20 Galaxy Unpacked event. It will help buyers to customize their foldable from several colors. It is also likely that the Galaxy Studio will extend beyond the foldable models to the S21 series.

There are a couple of other videos posted by Samsung relating to the Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 about the multitasking capability of the Z Fold3 and Galaxy Themes for the Z Flip3. The two models have had some impressive numbers since they were released several weeks back.

Nokia is bringing back one of its classic phones — the Nokia 6310. The feature phone, known for its sturdy build and durable battery, was first launched in March 2001. That means it has been 20 years since the phone was launched.

According to Nokia, the re-launch this year was purposely orchestrated to coincide with the 20th anniversary since it first launched. This new model features a 2.8-inch display against a 1.8-inch screen on the original model. It is powered by a UNISOC 6531F processor and has 8MB of RAM and 16MB of storage. it runs the Series 30+ (S30+) operating system. It also comes with bigger icons and there is also an accessibility mode that even further simplifies the menu.

The phone has a single 0.3MP camera on the back along with an LED flash. There is a MicroSD card slot and users will be able to add up to 32GB of additional storage. It has Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi, dual SIM support, and FM radio (wired and wireless dual-mode).

The 1150mAh battery capacity is just a tad bigger than that of the 2001 model but Nokia claims it will provide more than 7 hours of talk time and will last weeks in standby mode. The battery is removable and Nokia ships the phone with a charger and micro USB cable.

The Nokia 6310 Anniversary edition will be sold in the UK for £59.99 (USD $82). The device will be available in different colors. There is no word yet on when it will be available in other markets.
