Windows 11 PCs with Qualcomm WiFi chips to offer Ethernet level latency and reliability

Earlier this week, Qualcomm announced that its latest FastConnect 6900 WiFi system on the latest Microsoft Windows 11 operating system will ‘redefine’ wireless networking performance on PCs.

Windows 11

The American chipmaker announced the new chip that is built on a WiFi Dual Station design, which uses Qualcomm’s 4 Stream Dual Band Simultaneous. In simpler terms, the chip users multiple WiFi Bands and antennas at the same time to offer better performance over the conventional single band connection. Meaning, it uses both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz (or even 6GHz) together, which allows it to address the latency issues in one band on a system level.

Tests conducted by Qualcomm with retail WiFi 6 Access Points using WiFi Dual Station with the company’s 4 stream Dual Band Simultaneous managed to deliver a jitter free gameplay that is similar to Ethernet level latency and reliability. Furthermore, when compared to Single Station WiFi, the new chip managed to deliver latency four times lower than the conventional wireless counterpart. In other words, the results showcase that it would be great for PC gamers on Windows 11 laptops.

Windows 11

Microsoft officially stated that “Microsoft is pleased to bring ‘WiFi Dual Station’ to the Windows 11 ecosystem, enabling our Windows OEMs and ecosystem leaders to deliver low latency performance on the latest WiFi hardware. Games and other latency sensitive applications can now leverage two concurrent WiFi connections providing best in class user experiences.” The company further added that “This unique collaboration with Microsoft was essential in realizing the promise of Windows 11 with Qualcomm Technologies’ latest WiFi 6E 4 stream Dual Band Simultaneous devices. Through focused collaboration, we address today’s unprecedented wireless challenges and dramatically extend these premium capabilities to the entire ecosystem.”

The Apple iPad mini 6 had just recently hit the stores. But, users of the new tablet started noticing a jelly scrolling effect on its display soon after its sale. Now, the sixth generation of iPad mini is facing additional issues related to its display.

Apple

The Cupertino based giant claims that these issues are normal and not caused by hardware defect. However, various users are also reporting other issues with their iPad mini 6’s LCD panel, which includes the discoloration and distortions. As per a users on Reddit (Via 9To5Mac), some units of the latest iPad mini 6 have been facing a manufacturing defect with the 8.3 inch Liquid Retina LCD display. The Reddit user found that he faced some distortion and discoloration when touching the screen with the iPad in portrait orientation.

Furthermore, the user found that the issues apparently become more noticeable when the iPadOS is set to dark mode and when the screen is touched with slightly more pressure than usual. He further added that even after receiving a replacement unit from Apple, the new iPad still suffered from a similar issue. Reportedly, the company;s retail employee told the customer that it wouldn’t be surprised if the firm announces a recall for the iPad mini 6 due to its display.

Apple

As of right now, the issue does not appear to be too widespread and might just be a hardware issue on a smaller scale. But, a few other users on Reddit have also managed to replicate the distortion issue on the iPad mini 6’s LCD panel. Those suffering from this issue can take their iPads to an Apple Store or Repair Center to ask for a replacement unit. So stay tuned for more updates regarding this matter.

Nokia T20 tablet has a 2K display, Unisoc chip, 4G, and starts at £179.99

The last Nokia tablet was the Nokia N1 released in November 2014. After almost seven years and under new owners of the Nokia Mobile brand, a new model dubbed the Nokia T20 has arrived.

The Nokia T20 is the first Android tablet from the Finnish company, HMD Global Oy, which currently owns the license to make and sell Nokia-branded mobile devices. The new tablet has a familiar design language which we have seen on Nokia smartphones launched from the manufacturer. It also comes with all the software features associated with the brand.

Nokia T20

Nokia T20 Design

With respect to its design, the Nokia T20 isn’t a cheaply made device. The back is covered in aluminum with a sandblasted finish and the device has an IP52 rating. Up in front is a large display surrounded by not-the-slimmest of bezels. The corners of the tablet are rounded which should make it more comfortable to hold for long. The spec sheet says it is 7.8mm thick and weighs 465 grams. At launch, the Nokia T20 will be available in a single colorway – Deep Ocean.

Nokia T20 Specifications

The display of the tablet measures 10.4-inches and it has a 2K (1200 x 2000) resolution and a 5:3 aspect ratio. Nokia says there is toughened glass protecting the display but doesn’t reveal the brand. The screen has a brightness boost feature, SGS low blue light certification, and a brightness level of 400 nits.

Powering the Nokia T20 is the Unisoc T610 processor – an octa-core chip with two Cortex-A75 cores clocked at 1.8GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.8GHz too. There is 4GB of RAM and the 64GB of storage can be expanded by up to an additional 512GB via a MicroSD card slot.

A single 5MP camera sits in front and it is positioned at the top bezel in landscape mode. On the back is an 8MP camera along with an LED flash which may come in handy when you want to shoot or record in low-light.

The Nokia T20 has stereo speakers with a powerful amplifier, FM radio, and Nokia’s signature OZO Audio technology. There are two microphones too. There is no fingerprint scanner but you do get Face Unlock.

Under the metal back is an 8200mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging. The manufacturer claims users should be able to get up to 10 hours of movies or 15 hours of web surfing on a single charge. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to charge at the maximum supported rating as the charger bundled with it maxes out at 10W. Charging is via USB-C and there is an audio jack too.

The Nokia T20 ships with Android 11 out of the box with Google Kids Space and Google Entertainment Space. Nokia says it will receive two years of OS upgrades which means it should get upgraded to Android 12 and Android 13. It will also receive 3 years of monthly security updates while the enterprise edition will get 4 years of security updates.

Nokia T20 Price and Availability

The Nokia T20 is priced at £199.99 f(~$271) or the 4G version which has a Nano SIM card slot while the WiFi version is priced at £179.99 (~$244). You can pre-order starting today but it won’t ship until October 11.

Then, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ chipset, up to 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage, 50MP (wide, gimbal OIS) + 16MP (telephoto) + 48MP (ultra-wide) triple rear camera setup, and a 16MP front-facing camera.

Dell PCs would perhaps be running macOS today had this deal taken off

On the tenth anniversary of Steve Jobs’ passing, industry heavyweights are sharing memories of the late tech visionary, with one from Michael Dell suggesting a prospective deal that could have changed history.

In an interview with CNET, Dell talked about his friendship with Jobs and his new memoir, “Play Nice But Win: A CEO’s Journey from Founder to Leader,” stating he first met the late Apple co-founder at a computer user group (via: Apple Insider). Sure, this bit of information has been public knowledge for a while now, but Dell has provided a new piece of info this time that Apple has kept under wraps.

Dell stated that he became friends with Jobs after he solidified his company’s position as a leader in the PC industry. He revealed that Jobs visited him several times in order to convince him to adopt the NeXT operating system. This was likely because the OS and its expensive workstation were not seeing the commercial success that was expected.

Dell declined the propositions citing a lack of software and consumer interest.

But it didn’t end there. Jobs resumed talks once again in 1997 upon returning to Apple as interim CEO after the struggling computer firm acquired NeXT. This time, he asked Dell to license a version of macOS, since Apple engineers had ported the OS onto an x86 machine.

That sure got Dell interested and he agreed on paying a licensing for every PC sold with macOS. However, Jobs was concerned that this would eat into Apple Mac sales, due to which he then proposed installing Mac OS and Windows side-by-side on all Dell computers. This would allow customers to choose which OS to use. Of course, Dell would pay Apple a cut of all computer sales.

dell-headquarters

This didn’t sit right with Dell because he would’ve had to pay Apple the fees even if his customers preferred Windows. Moreover, Jobs was unable to guarantee continued access to the software.

“It could have changed the trajectory for Windows and Mac OS on PCs,” Dell noted. “But obviously, they went in a different direction.”

Jobs and Dell were rivals in a competitive industry, and they would openly trade jabs. When asked in 1997 what he would do with the then-underwater Apple, Dell replied he would “shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders.”

Despite the public jabs and fierce competition, Dell emphasizes the two remained friends.

Xiaomi to launch new Mix Fold to rival Galaxy Z Fold3, features under display camera: Report

Earlier this year, Xiaomi had launched its Mi MIX Fold, which was its first foldable smartphone that had a form factor similar to the Galaxy Fold series. Now, a new report has suggested that the company is working on a new MIX Fold device that will rival the newly launched Galaxy Z Fold3 from Samsung.

Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold Featured A
Mi MIX Fold

According to tipster Bald Panda (Via AndroidAuthority), the Chinese tech giant is working on a new MIX Fold series device. However, the new foldable smartphone will be a refresh model rather than a MIX Fold 2. Furthermore, the tipster added that the new refresh version will sport a high refresh rate external and internal screens along with a 120W fast charging support for its large 5,000mAh battery pack.

Notably, the new MIX Fold will reportedly also feature an under display camera module on the front. This is quite a major upgrade over the 67W charging on the original MIX Fold, which also only had high refresh rate for its external screen. The addition of the under display camera is also a significant update, although, its implementation won’t exactly be an upgrade in terms of image quality.

Unfortunately, it is currently unclear as to when the company will launch such a device or whether it is actually working on this device or not. However, previous reports had suggested that a new foldable phone from the brand will be launching sometime in the fourth quarter of this year. Note that we had also compared the Mi MIX Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 3, so you can check that out as well.

Realme GT Neo2 price in India tipped before announcement

The Realme GT Neo 2 will be launching this month in India. Tipster Yogesh Brar has claimed that the smartphone will be launching within the next 10 days in the country. He has also speculated on the pricing of the device.

Considering the fact that the GT Neo2 will be equipped with the Snapdragon 870 flagship, it is unlikely to be priced under Rs 25,000 in the country. The tipster claimed that the GT Neo2 will match the launch price of the Realme X7 Max.

To recollect, the Dimensity 1200 powered Realme X7 Max was introduced in two variants back in May. The 8 GB RAM + 128 GB was the base model, which was priced at Rs 26,999. The higher model with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage was priced at Rs 29,999.

Realme GT Neo2

A recent leak claimed that the GT Neo2 will be coming to India in two options such as 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage and 12 GTB RAM + 256 GB storage. In China, these models are priced at 2,499 Yuan (~Rs 29,000), and 2,999 Yuan (~Rs 34,800), respectively. Hence, it appears that Neo2’s base model may carry a sub-Rs 30,000 pricing in India.

The Realme GT Neo2 has a 6.62-inch FHD+ 120Hz AMOLED display, a 16-megapixel front camera, and a 64-megapixel triple camera unit. It further features the Snapdragon 870 SoC, LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.1 storage, and a 5,000mAh battery that supports 65W fast charging. It is likely to come pre-installed with ColorOS 12 based Android 11 and for security, it may feature a side-facing fingerprint scanner.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Note concept showcases wrap around display with S Pen

Back in September, we had reported on Samsung filing a trademark for a Galaxy “Flex Note” and a design patent for a large foldable smartphone that supports an S Pen as well. Now, a new 3D concept render based on this design has surfaced, with the device being dubbed as the Galaxy Z Fold Note.

Samsung

According to LetsGoDigital, Technizo Concept made a series of 3D concept renders based on the patent images of the foldable smartphone patent. While the original patent mainly described the display and left out the finer details, the 3D concept features a complete camera module on the rear. We had initially called this device the Galaxy Flex Note based on the trademark, but the latest renders have been referred to as the Galaxy Z Fold Note.

Looking at the design of this handset, it becomes clear why “Note” is included in its name as it features support for an S Pen that has a unique housing. With the display being a foldable wrap around display that covers the back as well, the S Pen is housed in a small magnetic housing on the back of the display. So when the display is in its unfolded state, one can take out the S Pen to use it in its tablet form.

Samsung

Meaning, the stylus is sandwiched in the display in its compact form. The wrap around display accounts for half of the total surface area on the back while the rear camera module houses multiple image sensors. As of right now, it is unclear if Samsung is actually working on such a product or is just covering all bases.

Screenshots confirm realme UI 3.0 will be based on ColorOS 12

Chinese smartphone brand realme has confirmed to unveil realme UI 3.0 based on Android 12 on October 13. Ahead of that, the company is running the Android 12 Early Access program for realme GT 5G in China. A participant in the initiative appears to have leaked screenshots of the new software.

Earlier today, Digital Chat Station shared a total of six screenshots showcasing realme UI 3.0. Going by the images, the latest version of the brand’s mobile software will be based on ColorOS 12.

We are not surprised as the previous two iterations of realme UI were also based on ColorOS 11 and ColorOS 7 respectively. Hence, we can expect all the features of OPPO’s new software with some minor changes here and there.

As per the screenshots, although realme UI 3.0 will retain the design language of ColorOS 12, it will have different icons.  Further, we also get to see features like new widgets, which OPPO calls ‘Quick View Cards’, improved floating windows, and redesigned quick settings.

Having said that, one of the pictures clearly mentions this software build as realme UI 2.1Beta. Hence, the final realme UI 3.0 could be different than this. However, we don’t expect any drastic changes.

What are expectations for Android 12-based realme UI 3.0? Do let us know in the comment section below.

Android 12 ROMs are already here barely a day following OS release

Despite the withering incentives to root a device as Android matures with each iteration, the custom ROM community continues to provide what the software devs of major OEMs just cannot – extended software support that can span well beyond three years.

However, that’s not the only reason to flash a ROM. Android 12 was just uploaded to AOSP and enthusiasts want to get their hands on it as soon as possible. With stable official Android 12 releases still at least a couple of months away, the only way to try the latest and greatest version of the OS right now is by flashing custom ROMs.

We typically see the onset of custom ROMs within just a week following the release of a new and stable version of Android. And that’s exactly what happened with the Redmi K20 Pro/Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro (raphael). The device has become one of the very first to bag an Android 12-based custom ROM, courtesy of XDA Senior Member abhishek987.

But perhaps the best part is that the vanilla AOSP ROM seems to be mostly stable, although with one big caveat being that the SELinux status is locked at permissive. The developer has adopted Danny Lin’s (AKA XDA Senior Member kdrag0n) open-source dynamic theming solution, as Google has yet to make its “Monet” theming system open source.

Ready to take the Android 12 ROM for a spin on your Xiaomi? You might want to flash the latest region-specific stable channel MIUI firmware beforehand since the Redmi K20 Pro/Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro has multiple regional variants. Do keep in mind though that a ROM with a permissive SELinux environment isn’t meant to be used as a daily driver at all due to the various security risks it poses.

Regardless, it’s a great option for those looking to get a taste of the Android 12 custom ROMs scene that will be. If interested, head over to this link to access the said AOSP 12.0 ROM for the Redmi K20 Pro/Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro.

That said, the above isn’t the only Android 12 ROM available. Those that do not own a raphael can instead give a try to XDA Recognized Contributor AndyYan’s GSI solution. The build is pretty barebones at the moment, but that is alright given its early stage.

For those unaware, GSIs or Generic System Images are a product of Android’s modularization thanks to Project Treble. It is basically a system image with adjusted configurations for Android devices.

Last but not the least, legendary GSI developer and XDA Recognized Developer phhusson is also working on his own Android 12 GSI. He’s yet to release any public builds though.

Apple iPad Pro may sport OLED display with ProMotion that reaches 10Hz by 2024: Report

Apple might be planning on two new iPad Pro models that arrive with low power LTPO OLED displays. These laptops are reportedly set to go on sale sometime in either 2023 or 2024, with one of them likely sporting a 12.9 inch panel.

Apple iPad Pro 12.9 (2021)

Since 2017, the iPad Pro models from the Cupertino based giant have used the ProMotion display, although, these generally have had a smaller range of refresh rates that range between 24Hz and 120Hz. But following the launch of the iPhone 13 Pro, the brand might be looking to switch to LTPO OLED display technology for its tablets that could also translate to iPad Pro supporting a wider range of refresh rates between 10Hz and 120Hz, as per TheElec.

For those unaware, iPad Pro models since 2017 have featured refresh rates between 120Hz, 60Hz, 40Hz, 30Hz, and 24Hz. On the other hand, the newly launched iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max support refresh rate between, 120Hz, 80Hz, 60Hz, 48Hz, 40Hz, 30Hz, 24Hz, 20Hz, 16Hz, 15Hz, 12Hz, and 10Hz as well.

Apple iPad Pro

According to known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone maker has abandoned its plans to release an iPad with an OLED display in 2022, with multiple sources now claiming that a launch date will now be set in 2023 or later. Similarly, DSCC (Display Supply Chain Consultants) analyst Ross Young also claimed that the first iPad with an OLED display would also be released in 2023. So stay tuned for more, as we will be providing updates when additional information is available regarding this matter.

It appears that the other specs of the OnePlus 9RT could be identical to the 9R. The handset is expected to arrive with a 6.55-inch Fluid AMOLED punch-hole display that offers a Full HD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The device may run on ColorOS 12 based Android 11 OS in China.

The Snapdragon 888 mobile platform could be assisted by up to 12 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of internal storage. The device could be backed by a 4,500mAh battery that supports 65W rapid charging. It is expected to arrive in three colors such as blue, silver, and black. It is likely to be priced between 2,000 Yuan (~$310) and 3,000 Yuan (~$465) in China.

The Redmi K40 Pro+ was one of the first smartphones to receive the MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition update in China in late August. The headset is sold as Mi 11X Pro in India. Xiaomi has now started seeding the latest version of MIUI to this variant of the phone.

Xiaomi Mi 11X Pro

MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition does not bring any new features. Instead, it focuses on optimizations. Xiaomi has been rolling it out to eligible devices worldwide ever since it was announced.

The update arrives for the Mi 11X Pro with build number V12.5.4.0.RKKINXM. In a typical Xiaomi manner,  despite being seeded out in October, the software build comes with September 2021 security patches.

Since the update is being pushed in batches, the build is currently labeled ‘Stable Beta’. Anyway, it should reach every user in the coming days.

On the other hand, the ‘Global’ variant of this smartphone called Mi 11i had already got access to MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition in September. In fact, interested users can also test Android 12 on it by enrolling themselves in the ‘Pilot’ program.

At the same time, the EEA variant of Mi 11i is yet to get the update. Hence, it will be the last variant of the Redmi K40 Pro+ to receive the MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition update.

Telegram gained more than 70 million new users during Facebook outage

Telegram, an application for instant messaging, has said that the platform gained more than 70 million new users during the Facebook outage on Monday as people across the world were left without key messaging services for about six hours.

A couple of days ago, Facebook suffered an outage on its network for around six hours during which all of its services, including Messenger, social media platform Instagram and messaging service WhatsApp, were inaccessible for users globally.

Telegram

Telegram founder Pavel Durov said that “the daily growth rate of Telegram exceeded the norm by an order of magnitude, and we welcomed over 70 million refugees from other platforms in one day.”

He also added that some of the users of the platform in the United States may have experienced slower speeds as millions rushed to sign up at the same time, but that the service worked as usual for the majority of users.

Telegram recently topped one billion downloads and earlier this year, the platform had over 500 million monthly active users.

It’s not just Telegram that benefited from Facebook’s problem. Signal, which is a competitor of WhatsApp and Telegram, also said that millions of new users joined the platform for secure messaging.

Also, this isn’t the first time Telegram and Signal gained millions of new users at the expense of Facebook. Recently, when WhatsApp updated its privacy policy and struggled to explain it properly, both platforms added millions of new users.

Samsung expected to report its best quarterly profit in 3 years

Samsung Electronics is one of the world’s largest technology company and it seems that the South Korean giant is gearing up to announce its best quarterly profits in three years with record revenue figures.

According to the estimates by analysts, the company is likely to post record revenue on rising memory chip prices and the rising sales of its newly released foldable smartphones — Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Fold3. In fact, it has been confirmed that the company has sold more than a million units of these two smartphones in South Korea so far.

Samsung Logo

A report of Refinitiv SmartEstimate (via Reuters) from 16 analysts claims that the operating profit for the world’s biggest memory chip and smartphone maker likely jumped to 16.1 trillion won (approximately $14 billion) in the quarter ended September.

If that turns out to be true, then the company is on track to report a 30 percent hike from 12.35 trillion won that it posted a year earlier and the highest since the third quarter of 2018. It is said that the revenue likely rose 11 percent to 74.6 trillion won.

The global shortage of semiconductors has led to price rise amind the COVID-19 pandemic, and as a result, Samsung soared 45% last year and hit a record high at the start of 2021.

Now, with the situation slowly getting in control, the prices for the semiconductor are expected to tumble after peaking in July-September and that outlook has contributed to the falling of Samsung’s stock.

Apple AirPods Pro and AirPods Max firmware update brings support for Find My

Apple has rolled out a new firmware update for the AirPods Pro as well as the AirPods Max which brings the support for finding the products if you misplace them, using the brand’s own Find My application.

The feature was teased by Apple in June at WWDC and was set to be introduced along with the iOS 15. While the feature didn’t show up with the iOS 15, thankfully, the company didn’t take much longer after the delay.

AirPods Pro hands on 07

With this new firmware update, the compatible AirPods models get functionality inside of the Find My app, including precise location, a new Nearby Finding UI, Lost Mode, and the ability to get notifications when the earbuds are left behind.

There’s also an AirTag-like Find Nearby interface but given that the products don’t come with the U1 chips installed, the feature isn’t quite as precise as with an AirTag. You won’t be getting arrows pointing towards them, but the onscreen prompts will show statuses like far, near, or “here” depending on how close you are.

Before you take advantage of the new feature, you will need to update your AirPods to the just-released firmware. This isn’t a straightforward process as you need to place the charged AirPods in the case and then place it near a connected phone.

To check the firmware version of your AirPods, go to the Settings on your iPhone/iPad and then navigate to General > About. There, choose AirPods and you will see a field labeled “firmware version.” The new firmware version with Find My support is 4A400.

The addition of AirPods Pro and AirPods Max in the Find My network means that they will now send out a continuous Bluetooth beacon message. When other Apple devices are in the area, they can detect this signal and report it to the Find My network, placing its location on the owner’s map.

Google Nest Cam and Nest Cam with Floodlight goes on sale in the United States

A few weeks ago, Google had announced its new Nest Cam lineup. Out of the four devices that the company had unveiled, the Nest Cam battery and the Nest Doorbell went on sale in August. Now, the tech giant is launching the remaining two products — Nest Cam wired and the Nest Cam with floodlight.

The Google Nest Cam wired is the budget offering from the company and is much smaller in size when compared to the indoor/outdoor Nest Cam. It has a 16:9 aspect ratio and comes with support for 1080p video at up to 30fps. The device also has a 135-degree field of view and 6x digital zoom.

The product comes in four color options — White, Pink, Beige, and Green, for the price of $99. There’s also a pink-hue model also comes with a wooden base, which comes at slightly higher pricing of $119.

On the other hand, the Google Nest Cam with floodlight is similar to the indoor/outdoor Nest Cam but comes attached with a 2,400-lumen floodlight. It records video through a 1/2.8-inch 2-megapixel sensor with 130-degree field-of-view and 6x digital zoom support.

It requires permanent power and has to be wired into the home’s wiring through a standard outdoor junction box. The floodlight is rated IP65 for weatherproofing and the camera itself is IP54. The device is on sale through Google Store for $279.99.

The product uses on-device intelligence to detect people, animals, and vehicles rather than just relying on a motion sensor. This means that you’re not illuminating the area through the light when something not-so-important happens.

Additionally, the new Nest cameras come with built-in intelligence and on-device processing, which means that there is now less reliance on the cloud. Google also allows users to create Activity Zones for free and get three hours of event-based video.

The user will be able to record up to an hour of footage if the internet connection breaks up or the power goes out. For more than three hours of recording, or to enable 24/7 recording, users will need to purchase a Nest Aware subscription, starting at $6 a month.
