Stuttering and Jelly Scrolling effect on iPad mini 6 is not an issue, says Apple

Ever since the Apple iPad mini 6 hit the stores last week, users across the globe have been affected by a weird “jelly scrolling” effect in the display. This makes the scrolling stuttery where one part of the display refreshes at an abnormally slower rate. But as it turns out, this may not be an issue after all. Apple believes there’s nothing wrong with the screen and this is expected behavior on LCD panels.

There have been multiple reports that suggest a wobble effect kicks in the iPad mini 6 and at first, it felt like a software bug. Despite this being an annoying event, the company states that the “jelly scrolling” effect is completely expected on LCD screens. Apple blames the LCD panels “do refresh line by line,” which causes a delay between lines.

Contrary to what Apple says, the “jelly scrolling” effect is negligible and hard to notice on other iPad models having 60Hz LCD displays, including the iPad Air 4. Not just Apple, but devices with LCD panels from other brands don’t seem to have this issue either.

But now that Apple has cleared the air on the “jelly scrolling”, there’s no way iPad mini 6 users can expect a repair or replacement and will, unfortunately, have to bear with the wobbling display. For the ones who are still under the 14 days window of refund, if you happen to face this issue, getting it returned appears to be the only wise option as of now.

Vivo V2102A with Snapdragon 898 bags CMIIT certification, likely to launch soon

A new Vivo smartphone with model number V2102A has received approval from China’s MIIT authority. It can be said based on previous reports that it may come equipped with the next-generation Snapdragon 898 mobile platform. The CMIIT certification suggests that the smartphone may debut before the end of the year in China.

The V2012A’s CMIIT listing only reveals some of its connectivity features like 5G support. Earlier this month, the V2102A smartphone was spotted at the Geekbench benchmarking site. The listing revealed that it is powered by a Qualcomm chipset that is codenamed as “taro” and it is equipped with Adreno 730 graphics. These hints suggested that the Vivo V2102A is powered by the successor of the Snapdragon 888 SoC, which is being referred to as the Snapdragon 898 by the rumor mill.

V2102A 3C listing

The Geekbench listing further revealed that the V2102A has 8 GB of RAM, and it runs on Android 11 OS. Qualcomm is yet to introduce the Snapdragon 898 chipset. Probably, it will be announced through Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Tech Summit 2021 that is scheduled to take place between Nov. 30 to Dec. 2.

Last year, Xiaomi introduced the Xiaomi Mi 11 5G as the first Snapdragon 888 SoC-powered phone in December 2021. With the V2012A phone appearing at CMIIT so early, it appears that Vivo may launch the first Snapdragon 898 phone this year. Unfortunately, there is no information on the final marketing name of the V2102A. It remains to be seen whether it could be arriving in the Chinese market as Vivo NEX 5 or the Vivo X80 Pro+.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 blows up possibly due to integrity damage

Samsung has had a terrible time handling incidents of devices getting blown up. The company had to suspend the sales of Galaxy Note 7 series when a manufacturing defect led to many devices getting exploded. Well, this one’s nowhere close but something did went wrong. A user who had taken his Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 to the repair center ends up finding his device fuming.

A user took it to Twitter to share his experience where he had initially dropped his Galaxy Z Fold3 a week ago and after taking it to Samsung repair center, he was advised to mail it to Samsung to get it replaced by a new unit. Upon preparing the device to ship, it turned into a blazing hot lava.

While the user suspects this could be due to an integrity damage, there could be multiple reasons that made the device end up like this. In a similar incident, Samsung Galaxy A21‘s explosion made an Alaska Airlines flight to evacuate the passengers as it happend inside the airplane.

Since there are no similar reports in this regard, we will only be able to tell what exactly happened when Samsung does a postmortem and pin points the main culprit and in the meantime, hope that it isn’t widespread like we saw on Galaxy Note 7.

Automaker Geely to launch a smartphone company, targets production of 3 million units

The chairman and founder of Chinese automaker Zhejiang Geely Holding, Eric Li has put in motion a bold plan to go into smartphone production with the first units coming out of the new company as early as 2023. Li is believed to hold a majority stake in the new smartphone company.geely

The move by the Chinese carmaker who also owns Volvo seems the first from an automaker. The common trend in the industry is smartphone companies delving into car manufacturing. Apple, Xiaomi, and Huawei are some of the smartphone manufacturers that are already making progress in the development of their own branded electric vehicles, albeit with some strong partnerships with established EV manufacturers

Li had made some really futuristic plans that are still hanging in the air, the move for the smartphone market seems to be solid and bold indeed. A foray into the smartphone market will throw Geely into intense competition for a market that is experiencing some levels of saturation. The big hitters in the Chinese smartphone market are Xiaomi and Apple on the high end, while several other brands compete for the huge mid-range and low-end segment.

According to Li, the major trend in the coming future is to create user ecosystems across borders to provide a more convenient, smarter, and connected multi-screen experience. The new company is named Hubei Xingji Shidai Technology Co Ltd, and it is making progress to establish its headquarters in Wuhan, China where it will develop smart devices, smartphones inclusive. There is an initial capital of up to $1.55 billion dollars for the project, with a targeted revenue of about $1.5 billion dollars within the first year of operations.

The company has set a very ambitious short-term and long-term target. However, time will tell whether it will become a success or not.

Meet Amazon’s Astro: a multifunctional home assistant robot

Amazon has unveiled its latest innovative home assistant robot on wheels, named Astro. The Amazon Astro will cost $1,000 and Amazon is offering an opportunity for potential buyers to request an invitation to buy it because it is a limited-version product.Amazon Astro

The Amazon Astro bears a similar name to a futuristic pet dog in the Jetsons TV series of the 1960s. The Amazon Astro seems to be the culmination of different technological inputs from robotics, artificial intelligence, home monitoring, and cloud services. It seems to be Amazon’s most ambitious home system product so far. Amazon’s Astro may just signal the beginning of a vigorous stage of in-home product development for the ultimate home robot, capable of doing virtually everything that could be thought of.

It looks a bit futuristic that an ultimate home robot will become a reality but the development in this area is rapid. The Astro, according to Amazon is capable of a variety of activities that could be expected from a home robot. It can map the home, obey commands to go to specific rooms, has face recognition capabilities that enable it to deliver items to specific persons. Amazon’s Astro also offers the functionality in Alexa by providing tons of details and information from the weather, and can also be used for a video call. Amazon’s Astro will follow you wherever you go, thus keeping you in the frame all through the video call.

Amazon’s Astro can also provide safety and security cover in your home when you are not around. It can roam around the house to make sure nothing is amiss in the house. It can also deploy third-party apps and accessories to record key body functions like your blood pressure.Amazon Astro

As pointed earlier, the Astro is possibly the first step in the evolution of the perfect home robot. There are several things it cannot do which are basic functionalities expected of what could be seen as the ultimate home robot. For a start, Astro does not have arms, cannot move on stairs, and has a whole lot of basic skills. We are sure that Astro would not be the last in-home robot from Amazon.

iPhone 13 Pro Max vs Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra: Specs Comparison

The iPhone 13 Pro Max finally went on sale with a similar design to its predecessor but several improvements in terms of specifications. It has a smaller notch, a bigger battery, a much better hardware department, and more. But is it even better than other Android top-tier flagships under every aspect? After comparing it to the most advanced Samsung flagship (the Galaxy S21 Ultra), it is time for Xiaomi to compete with Apple. Here is a comparison between the specifications of the iPhone 13 Pro Max and the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES 5G, dual SIM, IP68 waterproof, rear display 5G, optional dual SIM, optional eSIM, MagSafe 15W, IP68 waterproof

Design

The huge camera module of the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra does not make it very elegant. If you add that it comes with big dimensions, you will understand that it is definitely not the best phone to keep with you while you travel. The iPhone 13 Pro Max has that bigger notch, but its overall design is more stylish compared to its rival. Further, it comes with better water resistance: it has the IP68 certification which allows putting it underwater up to 6 meters deep without damages, while the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra can only withstand 1.5 meters of depth. The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is built with a ceramic back and an aluminum frame, while iPhone 13 Pro Max comes with a Ceramic Shield back and a stainless steel frame: its build quality is higher and it is also more compact.

Display

If we talk about the displays, Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is more interesting. Besides an amazing AMOLED panel with one billion colors, 120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ certification, and Dolby Vision, it also comes with an additional mini display on the rear side which can be used instead of the main display and allows shooting selfies with the rear cameras. Both the phones are stunning when it comes to image quality, so whatever you choose, you will get a great display. Note that Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra has an in-display fingerprint reader, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max comes with 3D facial recognition instead of a fingerprint scanner.

Specs & Software

On the paper, Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra looks more powerful as it comes with up to 12 GB of RAM, but the reality is that iPhone 13 Pro Max can achieve better performance due to its stronger Apple A15 Bionic chip and the better optimization of the iOS operating system. Despite it has just 6 GB of RAM, the iPhone 13 Pro Max can be faster and more powerful. Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra runs Android 11 out of the box and it will be among the first Xiaomi phones to get the Android 12 update, while iPhone 13 Pro Max runs iOS 15.

Camera

The camera department of the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is more complete and versatile than iPhone 13 Pro Max. Despite Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is able to record 8K videos, the iPhone 13 Pro Max actually records better videos in most of the conditions, but the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is way better when it comes to photo quality. It has a 50 MP main sensor with laser autofocus, a 48 MP periscope sensor with 5x optical zoom, and a 48 MP ultrawide camera against three inferior 12 MP sensors provided by the iPhone.

Battery

Despite Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra has a bigger 5000 mAh battery, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is able to provide a longer battery life on a single charge because it has better software optimization. On the other hand, Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra has faster charging speeds thanks to a power of 65W for both wired charging and wireless charging.

Price

The original price of the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra for the European market is about €1200/$1400, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max starts from €119 in Europe and $1099 in the U.S. If you are searching for a clear winner of this comparison, you are in the wrong place. Each of these devices has its pro and cons: which one should you buy? It depends on your actual needs. Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra may be very useful for you with its dual display and a better camera to shoot photos, but the iPhone 13 Pro Max is all but an inferior device and it offers better build quality, as well as longer battery life, similar camera performance, and more.

Amazfit global launch event set for Oct. 11, new model certified by FCC reveals new UI and features

Zepp Health (formerly known as Huami) has announced that it will unveil new products next month. The global launch event is expected to be for new smartwatches under the Amazfit GTR and Amazfit GTS line. While not yet confirmed, the new wearable should launch as the Amazfit GTR 3 and Amazfit GTS 3 respectively.

The announcement was made on Twitter by the Amazfit Global account and the tweet says the global event is scheduled for October 11, a day before the China launch that was reported earlier today.

There is a lot of anticipation for the new Amazfit smartwatches as they are expected to run the new operating system unveiled in July. Called Zepp OS, the new operating system comes with lots of new features that will provide a better experience for users. The OS is not only light, coming in at just 55MB, a small fraction when compared to the current Amazfit OS or even Apple’s watchOS 8, but also brings an improvement in performance and battery life. The manufacturer also promises an increase of 190% in battery life with the new OS, and support for internet cloud service applications a.k.a. web apps among other upgrades.

In related news, we have spotted a new Amazfit Smartwatch at the FCC. The smartwatch, which has the model number A2040, was certified on September 23 and from one of the documents, we can tell it has a round display.

Amazfit A2040 menu

We were also spotted new features such as a different UI with new options in the menu. As shown in the image above, the menu appears to have been redesigned. There is now a menu option that reads “Card Package”, above it is ”Calendar” and there is also a “Tools” menu option. The Settings menu also has some new additions such as Apps which points at app support. The System sub-menu also has a new option tagged “Bind New Phone” along with the other familiar ones.

This is definitely a new UI that will appear on the upcoming smartwatches and we can’t wait to try it out.

The new Echo Show 15 is Amazon’s largest smart display & can be hung on the wall

Amazon today held an invite-only event where it unveiled a couple of products. The star product is undoubtedly the Echo SHow 15, Amazon’s largest smart display yet. The device carries a price tag of $249.99.Amazon Echo Show 15

The Echo Show 15 just as the name implies, features a 15-inch display with a 1080p HD resolution. The design is also markedly different from those of the previous Echo Show models. It doesn’t include a bulky speaker attached to the back of the screen. Instead, it features a flat panel, making it possible to mount the display on a wall.

The Echo Show 15 is designed to be a shared hub like a notice board where family members can check upcoming calendar appointments, to-do lists, reminders and shopping lists, etc. Thus, it can be mounted in the kitchen, hallway, or living room.

Aside from the massive display and thin design, the Echo Show 15 features similar functions as the regular Echo Show such as playing music, beaming weather reports, video streaming, controlling smart home gadgets, and other tasks that can be activated via Alexa.

In addition, the large display allows the screen to display several important widgets permanently but they can be customized to suit the users’ preference. The screen also adds to the aesthetics of the home as it looks like a picture frame. Further, the display comes with a picture-in-picture feature, giving users access to view their security camera feed or video doorbell without obstructing what is being viewed previously. It also arrives with support for full HD resolution streaming from Netflix, Amazon’s Prime Video, Hulu, and others. Amazon also announced that TikTok and Sling TV support is coming to its entire line of smart displays.

There is no word yet on the availability.
