AUO’s 85-inch 240Hz 4K TV is an incredible console gaming centerpiece

AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), a company that specializes in optoelectronics solutions, has an aim to take on the ruling 85-inch Samsung Neo QLED with its next-gen display. AUO already has an 85-inch TV that was launched long ago and the company is now finally moving towards revamping the existing model with extra additions of a 4K panel and significantly higher refresh rates.

Even though we are still in the dark as the product page is yet to go live from the company’s end, DigiTimes Asia claims to have the details of the upcoming display. The most prominent bit is the 240Hz variable refresh rate (VRR) throughout the 85-inch 4K display. We expect it to be a native measurement, but it could also be a measurement obtained through intelligent processing wizardry. TV makers are known for following this technique called frame interpolation, for which they use their own nomenclature such as TruMotion by LG, MotionFlow XR by Sony, etc. This is what we know as the soap opera effect.

Well, this isn’t something new as AUO has already proved to be a leading panel maker with its 65-inch 144Hz Big Format Gaming Displays (BFGDs) in collaboration with NVIDIA. So, creating something even better shouldn’t come as a surprise for a company that is already doing an excellent job in this domain.

Bandwidth is a downside as the company has opted for the HDMI 2.1 port. However, it could still support a 4K resolution at 240Hz, albeit with Display Stream Compression (DSC). The better option would have been a DisplayPort 2.0 input. Additionally, the new display is also said to have an “ultra-high dynamic range” along with 96% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space.

With Samsung‘s high emphasis on brightness and successful implementation, AUO was forced to work on this and has provided a special anti-reflection coating to enhance the viewing experience in bright environments on this TV. With all these features packed in the display, AUO’s new 85-inch TV may turn out to be a delight for gamers and enthusiasts.

Apple’s iPadOS 15 increases RAM cap for applications

Apple has been making the iPad more and more powerful with each iteration and the recently launched iPad Pro, which comes powered by the Apple M1 chipset, the technology giant is blurring the lines between the iPad and MacBook.

Despite the most powerful iPad and the MacBook being powered by the same chipset — Apple Silicon’s M1, there’s remains one major issue — software. The Mac devices are powered by the macOS and the iPad is powered by the iPadOS which is a tweaked iOS.

In the iPadOS, the third-party applications are limited to using just 5GB of RAM even though the tablet comes powered by 8GB and 16GB RAM. This is to ensure that a single application doesn’t utilize all of the memory and impact other core system functions.

Apple iPad Pro

With the latest iPadOS 15, it appears that Apple has increased the cap on RAM usage for third-party applications. In iPad Pro powered by 16GB RAM, developers can request 12GB of RAM while 4GB RAM will be reserved for the core system functions.

Similarly, for the device powered by 8GB RAM, the company is reserving 2GB RAM to system functions and allowing developers to use 6GB RAM. The iPad models with less than 5GB RAM will have the same limits as before.

The change in the memory allocation in iPadOS will be beneficial to applications that are more graphically intensive, such as apps that support drawing, modeling, photo editing or video editing, among others.

Apple has said that new entitlement will be available on the “supported devices” but the tech giant hasn’t revealed the list of supported devices, so at this point in time, it’s not known which devices will support it, apart from the iPad Pro.

The latest iPadOS 15 comes with some new features and several additions and improvements to the existing ones. The software is set to be released this Monday, i.e. 20th September along with the iOS 15, tvOS 15, and watchOS 8.

Rolls-Royce’s all-electric aircraft makes its maiden flight!

The aviation industry is undergoing a seemingly silent revolution that may have a massive impact in the nearest future. Several aircraft manufacturers are exploring the huge benefits of electric engines in their operations and Rolls-Royce has joined this growing class. The company has just completed the maiden voyage of its all-electric aircraft.Rolls-Royce electric aircraft

The Rolls-Royce all-electric aircraft is aptly named Spirit of Innovation, completed its maiden 15-minute voyage, thus signposting the beginning of an intensive flight testing phase for the company that affords it to log important performance data on the aircraft. The main focus of the testing will be on the Spirit of Innovation’s electrical and propulsion system, according to Rolls-Royce.Rolls-Royce electric aircraft

The Spirit of Innovation is a one-seat airplane that has, in Rolls-Royce’s view, the most power-dense battery pack ever assembled for any aircraft. The aircraft is powered by a 6000 cell battery pack which delivers about 500HP with a three-motor powertrain. The aircraft, according to Rolls-Royce will have a top speed in the range of 300 miles per hour.

Rolls-Royce has made significant progress in the development of this aircraft despite some challenges that led to missing the initial target of 2020 for the maiden flight of the Spirit of Innovation. The aircraft also underwent successful ground testing about six months back through the taxi trials. The company is also working at developing an air taxi in partnership with Tecnam, as it pursues its objective of delivering all-electric aircraft for the commuter market.

The expected benefits in the ultimate transition of air travel to electric-powered aircraft are massive, as it will cut down significantly the greenhouse emission attributed to air travel. However, some fundamental challenges still need to be overcome including finding the right balance and weight that will provide optimal performance of such electric aircraft. It is known that electric vehicles are much heavier than gas-powered cars, and this is also applicable to aircraft.

The collaborative engagement for the Spirit of Innovation’s maiden flight also includes The UK government and Aerospace Technology Institute which provided funding. Even though we may be several years away from a commercial all-electric flight, this milestone is a move in the right direction.

Amazon shuts 3,000 online stores operated by 600 Chinese brands over paid reviews

Amazon is the world’s largest e-commerce company and this puts a lot of responsibility on it to sustain the ethical and professional standards required of it. Amazon continues to finetune its responsiveness to policy violations by online merchant stores to continue to safeguard the consumers from unethical conduct. It is in pursuit of this objective that the company has revealed that it has shut down about 3,000 online stores operated by about 600 Chinese brands. The reason for the action was because of consistent infractions of these stores in incentivized or paid reviews on their online stores registered on Amazon.Amazon Logo Dark

The current crackdown is the largest ever accomplished by Amazon and has affected some popular Chinese companies. The blacklisting also includes a freeze of the funds of these defaulters by Amazon. However, according to Amazon, the current move did not affect the growth outlook of Chinese firms on the platform. Amazon VP Asia Global Selling, Cindy Tai stated this in an interview monitored from China.

The issue of paid reviews is a serious policy violation and it has been banned since 2016. Customers rely on the accuracy and authenticity of product reviews to make their purchasing decision and the fidelity of this process is at the heart of the e-commerce model. Amazon says it will continue to improve its internal mechanisms to flag defaulters or serial offenders in paid reviews and other policy violations.

The move by Amazon has led to some of the popular brands seeking alternative e-commerce platforms to continue their operations on eBay and AliExpress among others. Amazon is also shoring up consumer confidence through its unprecedented action and hopes to continue flourishing as the world’s leading e-commerce company.

Apple’s plan for foldable iPhone is of interest to many in the industry

Apple is anticipated to announce the first folding iPhone in 2023, and the numerous patents suggest that the Cupertino giant has been working on them since 2016. As per industry experts, Apple is working on two types of foldables, the whose upper and lower sides meet each other and one whose right and left sides meet each other much like Samsung Z Flip and Z Fold.

It is being said that Apple and Samsung are co-developing a foldable OLED panel upcoming folding iPhone. The panel is rumored to be a 7.5-inch in-folding display panel employing etching for a decrease in thickness. Apple’s first folding iPhone is expected to be a clamshell smartphone.

Foldable iPhone Self-Healing Screen Patent

As per research from market research firm DSCC, Samsung Electronics’ share in the foldable smartphone market is expected to be 87 percent last year. It is unlikely to fall below 75 percent even after the debut of Apple’s first foldable smartphone. According to an industry source, “Apple will not be able to lead the foldable smartphone market for a while with the market being led by Samsung Electronics and Chinese manufacturers such as Huawei and Xiaomi releasing such products.”

Earlier this Ming-Chi Kuo suggested a 2023 launch for the folding iPhone, but “the project hasn’t yet officially kicked off,’ which could mean that they could even get delayed or could even be shelved like the much-awaited AirPower. The folding iPhone is expected to be more of an iPad-like device, and it’ll measure  7.5-8-inch when folded out.

According to a recent study from Counterpoint Research and Strategy Analytics, the market size of foldable smartphones is estimated to reach 90 million units in 2023 and 100 million units in 2025. This suggests that foldables will be the next big thing in the smartphone industry in the coming years.

Industry insider hints Huawei will launch the Mate 50 in October

Chinese tech powerhouse Huawei has had a bag of mixed fortunes since the US blacklisted the company from accessing important US supplies a few years back. Back in July, there was a raft of product releases that indicated a silver lining in the dark skies. The July offering included the flagship P50 series. However, there were speculations that due to the US ban, as well as supply chain challenges, Huawei might not be able to release another flagship product within 2021, although the Mate 50 had already been mooted for unveiling within the fourth quarter of the year.

There are indications that Huawei might have overcome all the constraints and indeed the Mate 50 series is set for its October 2021 release as scheduled. This hint is coming from an industry expert and analyst with Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), who insists that Huawei will release the flagship products in October as planned.

Tracking the event schedule of Huawei, there is a global launch event officially slated for October 21 in Vienna, Austria, and the Mate 50 series could be part of the product lineup for the Vienna event. Huawei is however yet to offer any official confirmation that the global event on October 21 will also include the launch of the Mate 50. The global event could also be the global launch of the P50 series outside China.

Many details about the Huawei Mate 50 series are still under wraps except for few details that could be pieced from the teaser. More details about the device and key specs will become available as we inch closer to the rumored October 21 unveiling. Since there has not been any official confirmation from Huawei, the speculation may also be false. The coming weeks will determine the direction.

Design

The Lenovo Tab P12 Pro 5G is a premium tablet built with solid materials: it is made of aluminum and it comes with very narrow bezels around the display. It is a device meant for productivity and gaming, so for those who want to use it as a PC as well. That is the reason why you can attach a physical keyboard to it. The tablet even comes with stylus support for handwriting and drawing. It is very thin: the thickness is just 5.6 mm and it makes the Lenovo P12 Pro 5G one of the thinnest tablets out there. The Lenovo Tab P11 5G is thicker, but it has a more compact body because it comes with a smaller display. It is built with cheaper materials, but it supports a stylus and a physical keyboard as well. The borders around the display are thicker as well, but the tablet still offers a high screen to body ratio.

Display

The display of the Lenovo P12 Pro 5G is way better if compared to the panel of the Lenovo P11 5G. It is an AMOLED panel with a wider 12.6-inch diagonal, a Quad HD+ resolution, a 120 Hz refresh rate, the HDR10+ certification, and Dolby Vision support. Besides being superior to the Lenovo P11 5G, this is one of the most advanced displays in the tablet market, even better than the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 series. If you want a display at the same level, you must go either for an iPad or for one of the most expensive Samsung Galaxy Tabs. For authentication, the Lenovo P12 Pro 5G relies on a side-mounted fingerprint reader or a TOF sensor for 3D facial recognition, while Lenovo P11 5G has just the TOF 3D sensor.

Specs & Software

In terms of the hardware department, Lenovo P12 Pro 5G is a flagship tablet, while the Lenovo P11 5G is a mid-ranger. The P12 Pro has a Snapdragon 870 mobile platform, up to 8 GB of RAM, and up to 256 GB of internal storage. You get the very same memory configurations with the Lenovo P11 5G, but the processor is the Snapdragon 750G. Both chipsets support 5G connectivity, but the former is much more powerful. The tablets run Android 11 out of the box.

Camera

Lenovo Tab P12 Pro 5G and P11 5G are equipped with a 13 MP main camera. The Tab P12 Pro 5G adds a 5 MP secondary ultrawide sensor, while the P11 5G does not have it. On the front side, both the tablets pack an 8 MP main camera and an 8 MP TOF 3D sensor for 3D facial recognition. The camera performances are not different, given that the ultrawide camera is the only difference between the two tablets.

Battery

Thanks to its bigger dimensions, the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro 5G is able to house a bigger battery with a capacity of 10,020 mAh. It even supports a faster charging technology with a power of 45W. The P11 5G has just 7700 mAh and 20W fast charging. So you get both longer battery life and faster charging speeds.

Price

The Lenovo Tab P12 Pro 5G will be available in the U.S. from October starting from $610, while in Europe it will cost €899. The Lenovo Tab P11 5G is heading to the European markets with a starting price of €499. While the tablets are pretty similar when it comes to the cameras, there are deep differences in the other aspects such as displays, hardware, and battery. Naturally, the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro 5G is a way better device. But there is also an important price difference between the two models. Which one would you pick?

Nokia G50 5G certified by FCC indicating an imminent launch

Nokia G50 5G has been the subject of some speculation in the past few weeks with some images of the premium device leaked. The trajectory leading to its ultimate release is further accentuated by the fact that the G50 5G has gotten the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) certification. The FCC listing further confirmed some of the details about the smartphone earlier gotten through leaks.Nokia G50 5G

The Nokia G50 5G, as expected, supports 5G connectivity and also has a 4,850mAh battery capacity. The FCC certification has authorized the use of the stated battery on the device at certain GSM, NR, LTE, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi frequencies. The FCC listing also provided a schematic representation of the designated safety label location, but no renders of the actual device are presented.

We are sure of some of the specs already released for the Nokia G50 5G. It will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480 SoC, which is Qualcomm’s first chipset with 5G capability. The Nokia X10 and X20 smartphones also have the Snapdragon 480. The Nokia G59 5G will have a 6.38-inch HD+ display, and we expect that this will also come with a decent display refresh rate. While the 4,850mAh battery could offer a fairly long period of continuous use, only 10W charging support is available.

The Nokia G50 5G will have a triple rear camera setup with some tipsters affirming that this includes a 48MP main sensor. The price of the Nokia G50 5G should not be priced below $250 and it’s a mid-ranger.
