The company said that it combined the best in hardware innovation with its proprietary AI algorithms for the new camera tech, which aims to offer a full screen experience in upcoming devices.

Oppo

The Chinese smartphone maker stated that its under screen camera solution would be able to maintain the integrity and consistency of the entire screen, even when the camera is in use or in standby. Through this, it would be capable of a balance between consistent screen and camera image quality, or as the brand put it “an under screen camera solution with no compromises. Notably, Oppo also saw various breakthroughs during the development of the new camera technology.

Realme now has over 100 million users globally; India remains its biggest market

Earlier this year, in March, Realme revealed that it had around 70 million users, having sold 42 million smartphones last year. At the time, the company said that it was aiming to have a global user base of 100 million users by the end of this year. Realme has now achieved that goal well ahead of its deadline.

Madhav Sheth, CEO of Realme India and Europe has revealed that the company now has more than 100 million users globally. Out of those 100 million users, around 50 million are from India, making it the biggest market for the brand.

realme logo

This isn’t surprising given that Realme was started in India as a sub-brand of OPPO and during the initial years, the company was present exclusively in India. It’s been a couple of years since Realme started expanding to other regions around the world.

The brand is now gearing up to launch new smartphones in the Indian market, as revealed in the latest episode of #AskMadhav. The company will be launching the Realme GT series on 18th August in India, which includes Realme GT 5G, GT Neo, GT Master Edition, and GT Master Explorer Edition. It is expected to have a starting price of around ₹30,000 (~$404).

Realme has unveiled its latest concept smartphone named Realme Flash, touted as the world’s first Android phone to come with support for magnetic wireless charging. The company has also launched two models of Realme MagDart magnetic wireless chargers but there’s no information about pricing and availability in the market.

Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 5100 chipset for wearable devices leaks online

Last year, Qualcomm had launched Snapdragon Wear 4100 SoC for wearable devices and now the company is gearing up to launch its successor, which is likely to be called Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 5100.

Folks at XDA-Developers have come across build ID “LAW.UM.2.0-00700-SW5100.00” while digging code in Qualcomm’s Code Aurora Forum. In this context, “LAW” stands for “Linux Android Wear” and for those who are unaware, Android Wear is the operating system that is now known as Wear OS.

Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear Featured

The “UM” stands for “Unified Modem” and “SW5100” is referring to the Snapdragon Wear 5100 name. As per the report, the chip is codenamed “monaco.” It is expected to be based on Qualcomm’s “bengal” platform.

This new chip could come with a quad-core processor with ARM Cortex-A73 cores. For comparison, the current-generation Snapdragon 4100 comes with a quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 configuration.

The report goes on to mention that code snippets indicate that this new chip for wearable devices is based on Android 10 and Android 11. So, there’s a question mark about the support for the Wear OS 3 platform which is a unified version of Google and Samsung’s operating system for wearable devices.

Qualcomm has announced that the existing Snapdragon Wear 3100, 4100, and 4100+ chips are capable of running Wear OS 3 but it’s unlikely that the device manufacturers will be releasing a major update for the devices.

A few days ago, the company also announced the Wearables Ecosystem Accelerator program, which aims to have Qualcomm at the center of the upcoming Wear OS devices.

While Qualcomm has released a few chips for wearable devices, it has not been able to make its mark in this segment. Even smartphone makers are now slowly designing their own chips, Google is the latest example with its Tensor SoC. It will be interesting to see what Qualcomm has up its sleeves to remain a dominant player in the market.

Samsung Galaxy S21 series sales reportedly the worst in the lineup’s history

The Galaxy S20 series is known for poor sales. As a result, Samsung not only released the Galaxy S21 series a month earlier but also priced it cheaper. Despite that, the latest Galaxy S series models sales figure is said to be even lower than that of its predecessors.

According to a report by Kiwoom Securities (via Business Post), Samsung only managed to sell 13.5 million units of the Galaxy S21 series during its first six months in the market. The report states that the sales decreased by 20% and a whopping 47% when compared with the Galaxy S20 series and the Galaxy S10 series respectively.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 series models are said to be the worst-performing Galaxy S series smartphones in the initial six months post-release. In fact, as per data, the sales of the Galaxy S lineup have been decreasing gradually every year.

Looks like people have lost interest in the iconic Galaxy S series. Unfortunately, that’s not the only bad news for Samsung. Chinese tech giant Xiaomi overtook the South Korean tech giant to become the largest smartphone brand in Europe for the first time in Q2 2021. For those unaware, Xiaomi is also the world’s second-largest smartphone brand at the moment.

Since there will not be a Galaxy Note this year, Samsung will continue promoting the Galaxy S21 series in the second half of the year to boost sales. However, the company will be focussing more on the Galaxy Z series of foldable smartphones.

To overcome this issue, Samsung is expected to use an AMD GPU-equipped Exynos chipset in the next year’s Galaxy S22 series. This SoC is said to be more powerful than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 895. The company anticipates that this differentiating factor will improve dwindling sales of the Galaxy S series.
