Xiaomi working on new smartphones with large rear camera sensors: Patent

Xiaomi has recently been granted patents for new smartphone models that feature large camera modules on the rear. This might imply that the company might be aiming on launching new devices with an emphasis on mobile photography.

According to a LetsGoDigital report, the Chinese tech giant filed for a design patent back in March 2021 with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO). This patent got published earlier this month and showcased three smartphone models with large image sensors on the rear. The patent carried the title ‘Mobile phone, back cover for mobile phone’ and arrived with various design sketches that offers us a look at the rear design of these handsets.

Looking at these images, the company seems to be inspired by the Samsung Galaxy S21 series, with one of the patented design showcasing a similar camera module placement on the rear. The sensors are vertically stacked on the top left corner of the back panel. This model sports four image sensors, which includes what appears to be a periscopic zoom lens. The primary camera is the largest and is placed on the top followed by two unknown sensor below it.

Similarly, the second model sports a unique rear camera module design, with two large camera cutouts being visible on the vertically stacked module. One sensor is housed on the top while the second one is placed at the bottom. The space between these two sensors includes two smaller camera cutouts along with a rectangular cutout, which might be for the LED flash. This makes it similar to the Mi 11i but with the sensors are placed vertically rather than horizontally. Lastly, the third and final model features a single large sensor with two smaller sensors right below it. Unfortunately, it is currently unknown if the company is actually working on these devices or just covering all bases. So stay tuned for more updates.

Realme India likely to hold launch event next week, Narzo 30 and Realme TV 32” expected

Realme will be hosting a global launch event tomorrow to announce the Realme GT 5G. The company is also expected to unveil its first notebook called the Realme Book and the first tablet named the Realme Pad along with GT 5G. Today, Realme CEO Madhav Sheth confirmed that the company will be launching 4G and 5G versions of the Narzo 30 this month. He has also hinted at the arrival of a new 80cm (32-inch) TV for India. It is speculated that the company will hold a launch event on June 24 in India to announce these devices.

Tipster Yogesh recently claimed that Realme will be holding a launch event in India on June 24. He further said that the company is expected to announce multiple products such as Narzo 30, a 32-inch TV, and new earbuds. The company may tease the arrival of the Realme GT 5G and Realme Book. However, these devices are expected to launch in mid-July.

Realme is currently focused on the global launch event that is scheduled to take place on June 15. It is likely that the company will confirm the rumored June 24 launch event for India later this week

The Realme Narzo 30 4G and 5G feature a 6.5-inch IPS LCD FHD+ 90Hz display, and they are loaded with Realme UI 2.0 based Android 11 OS. For security, these handsets are equipped with a side-facing fingerprint scanner.

Both phones have a 16-megapixel camera for selfies, and their camera unit comprises a 48-megapixel primary lens, a 2-megapixel macro shooter, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Both smartphones have a 5,000mAh battery. The 4G model supports 30W charging, whereas the 5G variant comes with 18W charging.

The Realme Narzo 30 4G is powered by the Helio G95 chipset and 6 GB of RAM, whereas the Narzo 30 5G has Dimensity 700 SoC and 4 GB of RAM. Both handsets are equipped with 128 GB of built-in storage.

Last year, Xiaomi launched its first-ever OLED smart TV called Mi TV Master Series 65-inch OLED. This television is also known as Mi TV LUX 65” OLED. Eleven months after its announcement, the company appears to be teasing yet another OLED TV.

Last Friday, Pan Jun, the General Manager of Xiaomi TV, shared a picture showcasing two different televisions in dark on Weibo. In the description of the post, he mentioned that one of the televisions in the image is a new Mi TV, whereas the other is a highly-rated TV (he did not mention the brand). He asked his followers to choose the better one out of the two.

The picture shared by the company executive does not justify the picture quality of the two televisions. It is a known fact that the quality of TV panels cannot be judged from images and videos. One needs to experience in person in order to draw a conclusion.

Hence, this Weibo post by Pan Jun is nothing but part of marketing to tease the arrival of a new Xiaomi Mi TV. The company is yet to officially reveal anything about this television, however, a reliable leaker has some idea about this product.

According to Digital Chat Station, the upcoming Mi TV will be using an OLED panel. However, he did not reveal the size. But he did hint at the television’s price.  

As per the tipster, the forthcoming Xiaomi OLED TV could be slightly expensive due to chip shortage and a hike in TV panel prices. But he does say that the company will help in making Mini LED and OLED televisions accessible to more consumers by bringing down the price with its new products.

Huawei revenue and profits in the UK falls after 5G ban: Report

After the UK government banned the use of telecommunications equipment made by Huawei, the company faced a noticeable decline in its profits and revenue in the region.

For those unaware, equipment made from the Chinese tech giant was banned by the local government from being used in the country’s 5G networking infrastructure. This meant that local telecom operators can no longer source telecommunications equipment from the company. Furthermore, the government also mandated that carriers have to phase out any equipment from the Chinese brand completely by the year 2027. Meaning, Huawei is essentially cut off from the 5G network in the UK.

According to an FinancialTimes report, a source stated that the company’s sales in 2020 were down by 27 percent year on year, reaching just 913 million Pounds (roughly 1.28 billion US Dollars). On the other hand, the company’s operating profit was down to a quarter, amounting to just 36.4 million Pounds (roughly 51.3 million US Dollars) before tax. Although, the vendor’s profits did benefit from a 26 million Pounds in costs due to the reduction in employee and travel expenses during this time.

While the UK unit of Huawei is a relatively small division of the company, it is also a symbol of the struggles that the brand is facing in various countries. After placing various sanctions on the telecom equipment maker, the US government also pressured other nations, including the UK, to ban the company from supplying gear for core 5G networks. Initially, the company was allowed to supply 5G in a limited capacity, but has since been banned completely from the network.

Xiaomi recently launched its flagship smartphone in its home market in China — Mi 11 Ultra. the phone is priced at 5,999 yuan (~$940) for the 8GB RAM and 256GB storage model but was reduced to 5,499 yuan (~$859) during the 618 sale event.

Now, the company is offering a free Xiaomi Air 2s Bluetooth Headset to compensate those who purchased the smartphone at its original price. Those users can get the headset for 0.01 yuan, which usually costs 399 yuan (~$37).

Once the users fill up the information in a link shared by the company through push notification, Xiaomi will send another link via text message on 17th June after it verifies information and confirms the user’s qualification to get the headset for 0.01 yuan.

Although the Xiaomi Air 2s Bluetooth Headset costs 399 yuan, the device is currently available for purchase at 349 yuan. It features dual microphones, a half-ear design, and has support for Bluetooth 5.0, LHDC high-definition Bluetooth protocol. It offers a battery life of 5 hours on a single charge and supports Qi wireless charging.

The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra features a 6.81-inch 2K E4 AMOLED display that offers a 120Hz refresh rate. It is touted to be one of the best displays in the market. The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G SoC with Adreno 660 GPU.

In the camera department, the phone has a triple-camera setup led by a pro-grade 50-megapixel sensor. On the front side, there’s a 20-megapixel AI selfie shooter. It runs the Android 11 operating system out-of-the-box with full Google Mobile Service support and is powered by a 5,000mAh battery with 67W fast charging.

Chinese giant Huawei unlikely to be removed from US’ list of restricted companies

The US-China trade war saw Huawei getting banned in the United States in 2019 and the Chinese giant has been on the Entity List of the US government ever since, making it very difficult for the firm to continue doing its hardware business.

Huawei, along with its 70 subsidiaries, has been banned from doing business with companies based in the United States or using technologies developed in the US. The list also includes some other China-based companies.

Amid this trade war, China is gearing up to become self-sufficient in several technological sectors, including making semiconductors. It is also working on several next-generation technologies such as AI, ML, 6G, and more.

The United States is also working on being a frontrunner in the technology sector and is set to spend around $54.2 billion to increase the competence of American firms. The bill, named  US Innovation and Competition Act, is currently in the House of Representatives.

When Huawei was put on the Entity List, the company was accused by US officials of being a national security risk for its alleged ties with China’s military and security agencies. However, the company has repeatedly denied such claims, for which the US government has provided no proof so far.

Because of the ban in the United States, Huawei can no longer make its own semiconductor, and companies doing business with the Chinese giant need to take a special license or permission from the US government, which is unlikely to come by.

With difficulties in the consumer electronics business, Huawei has now shifted its focus to other businesses, including software development and electric vehicles. Both these fields aren’t the core part of Huawei and it will be interesting to see if the Chinese company manages to establish itself in such sectors.

Huawei’s first-quarter revenue fell by 16.5 percent to 152.2 billion yuan, from 182.2 billion yuan ($28.1 billion) in the same period last year mainly due to a shrinking consumer business, the company’s main revenue earner.

Smartphones nowadays come with a feature that boosts the battery life on the device by killing or shutting down unnecessary apps and processors in the background. But sometimes, it goes beyond what’s expected and severely affects the performance of apps.

Now, Google has taken notice of this practice and has asked developers to fill in a survey form detailing how phone makers’ app restriction practices are culling their applications.

In the survey form, Google asks: “If your app is restricted due to battery saver, please provide as many details as possible in the form.” Along with other details, the company specifically wants developers to name the OEM responsible.

To address the long-standing issue of background app killing practice, Google outlined a plan before the release of the Android 11 operating system to give more control to the developers. The newer versions of Android come with a better resource management system to ensure that essential apps are not getting killed. But some OEMs have found another way to kill the background apps, disadvantaging some developers.

The list of smartphone makers that are notorious for such practice includes Samsung, Nokia, OnePlus, and Xiaomi. While developers may be at a disadvantage with background app killing by OEMs, users feel that it is necessary for battery management on phones.

With Google asking developers about this issue, it will be interesting to see how the tech giant manages to address this problem while keeping a fine balance among device manufacturers, developers, and users.

Recent reports have claimed that Samsung is gearing up to launch the Galaxy M32 mid-range phone in India. The landing page of the phone has is now available on Amazon India. The listing has not only revealed its launch date but also confirmed its design and key specs.

The Galaxy M32 will be launching at 12 PM (local time) on June 21 in India and it will be made available for purchase through Amazon India. The Galaxy M32 can be seen in terms of design featuring a u-shaped notch and a slightly thick chin. The phone’s rear features a textured back with a squarish quad-camera unit and an LED flash.

For security, the power button placed on the device’s right edge doubles up as the fingerprint scanner. Rumors are rife that it will be available in two colors such as black and blue in the country.

The Galaxy M32’s Amazon listing has confirmed that it has a 6.4-inch AMOLED screen that offers an FHD+ resolution, a 90Hz refresh rate, and 800nits brightness.

The M32 is packed with a 6,000mAh battery, but there is no word on its fast charge support. It has a 20-megapixel front camera for snapping selfies, and its back panel has a 64-megapixel primary camera.

Rumors surrounding the phone have claimed that it could be equipped with Helio G80 or Helio G85 chipset. It may come in two variant such as 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage and 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage. It is speculated that the handset will be priced between Rs 15,000 (~$205) and Rs 20,000 (~$273).

Last week, a Realmeh phone with model number RMX3366 was spotted at TENAA with key specifications and images. Rumors surrounding it have claimed that it will be debuting soon as the Realme X9 Pro in China. A tipster from China has shared detailed information on its specifications to revealed what to expect from this device.

According to the tipster, the Realme X9 Pro has a 6.55 Samsung E3 S-AMOLED display with curved edges and support for a 90Hz refresh rate. TENAA revealed that it offers a 20:9 aspect ratio and a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels.

The Snapdragon 870 chip will power the device with LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. It houses a 4,500mAh battery that supports a 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 enhanced edition.

For selfies, it will feature the Sony IMX616 32-megapixel front camera. Its rear camera setup features a Sony IMX766 50-megapixel primary camera, a Sony IMX481 16-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 2-megapixel B&W lens.

The Realme X9 Pro will offer other features like dual speakers with Dolby panoramic sound, Z-axis linear motor, and NFC. The front and rear sides of the phone are shielded by a layer of Gorilla Glass 5, and it has an aluminon alloy frame. The tipster speculates that 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage and 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage could be priced around 2,699 Yuan (~$422) and 2,999 Yuan (~$469).

The tipster further said that the Realme X9 Pro and the OPPO Reno 6 Pro+ are mostly the same. The only noticeable additions that the Reno model has is that it features X-axis linear motor, a telephoto camera, and OIS support. He added that there are two variants of the Realme X9 Pro, one featuring the Snapdragon 870 and the other one with Dimensity 1200. The latter will not launch in China as it is meant to arrive in global markets as the OnePlus Nord 2.

In April, Vivo announced the Vivo V21, Vivo V21 5G, and V21e smartphones in Malaysia. Among these three phones, India was treated with only the V21 5G handset. Fresh information shared by 91mobiles reveals that the Vivo will soon announce the Vivo V21e 5G smartphone in India. To recollect the V21e that went official in Malaysia was a 4G phone powered by the Snapdragon 720G chip, but the rumor mill has been speculating on the existence of a Dimensity 700 SoC powered V21e 5G.

Citing leaker Ishan Agarwal as the source, the publication revealed that the Vivo V21e 5G has a 6.44-inch AMOLED panel that offers an FHD+ resolution. The Dimensity 700 5G chip powers the phone with 8 GB of RAM.

It may feature 128 GB of built-in storage, and for additional storage, it may come with a dedicated microSD card slot. The device could be backed by a 4,000mAh battery that supports 44W rapid charging.

The V21e 5G may flaunt a front camera of 32-megapixel. Its rear shell could be equipped with a 64-megapixel primary camera an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens.

In comparison, the V21e 4G has a 6.44-inch AMOLED FHD+ display, Snapdragon 720G, 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage, and a 4,000mAh battery with 33W rapid charging. It has a 44-megapixel front camera, and a 64-megapixel + 8-megapixel (ultrawide) + 2-megapixel (macro) triple camera system. It debuted with a pricing of Rs 29,990 (~$410) in India. As far as its 5G variant is concerned, there is no word on its pricing.

OnePlus has recently launched the OnePlus Nord CE 5G and if a recent leak by tipster Mukul Sharma is to be believed, the company may launch it as early as tomorrow (June 15). A few hours ago, Evan Blass shared a render and a specs sheet of the N200. The device is speculated to launch as OnePlus’ most affordable 5G-ready phone.

The OnePlus Nord N200 measures 163.1 x 74.9 x 8.3mm and weighs 189 grams. The device has a 6.49-inch IPS LCD punch-hole display that delivers a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, a 20:9 aspect ratio, 405ppi pixel density, and a 90Hz refresh rate. The device runs on OxygenOS based on Android 11 OS.

The Snapdragon 480 SoC fuels the device with 4 GB of LPDDR4x RAM. It has 64 GB of built-in (UFS 2.1) storage and a dedicated microSD card slot. It is backed by a 5,000mAh battery with 18W charging.

The N200 has a front camera of 16-megapixel, and its rear camera unit has a 13-megapixel main camera with EIS support, a 2-megapixel macro lens, and a 2-megapixel monochrome camera, and an LED flash. The supports photography features such as HDR, macro, portrait mode, pro mode, AI scene detection, timelapse, 720p slow-motion video at 120 fps, and up to 1080p video recording at 30fps.

For security, it has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and face unlock support. The other features that are available on the device include dual SIM, 5G, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC, dual-band GPS, USB-C, and a 3.5mm audio jack. Rumors surrounding the smartphone have claimed that it may debut in the U.S. with a sub-$250 pricing. OnePlus CEO Pete Lau said earlier this month that this phone will not be coming to India.

Microsoft knows that which is why it capitalized on the meme and made a real fridge that looks like a giant version of the console last year which it gave away to one lucky winner and some celebrities. Back in April, it announced it would make mini versions of the fridge that people will be able to purchase. It has kept that promise as the Xbox Mini Fridge is now official.

The refrigerator was unveiled during the Xbox + Bethesda E3 event, with a promise to be available in time for this year’s holidays.

There is no info yet on the price, but it should be way cheaper than the $499 price tag of the giant-sized version. Whatever the price tag is, this is a nice addition if you already have the Xbox Series X. We just hope the fridge isn’t in short supply like the console.

Apple’s upcoming Beats Studio Buds TWS Earbuds tipped to retail for $149.99

Noted tipster Jon Prosser has clarified that the Beats Studio Buds Truly Wireless Earbuds from Apple may not be unveiled on July 21, as earlier tipped. The tipster also disclosed that the Studio Buds will come in three different hues – red, black, and white. The wireless earbuds are also expected to retail for $149.99.

There had been speculations surrounding the earbuds last month, and the design is already in the open. Unsurprisingly, it bears close semblance with the Apple AirPods Pro 2. The device has also found its way to some certification websites, like Taiwan’s NCC database and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) website, last month. These listings are certainly pointing to a looming launch.

Apple also showed a teaser of the TWS earbuds when it released images of the device in the Beta Builds of iOS 14.6 and tvOS 14.6. We know that the Beats Studio Buds could come without stems and feature active noise cancellation technology for a more immersive audio experience.

However, much is still left to speculations about the Beats Studio Buds, like the battery capacity, and other details. The expected official announcement by Apple will provide some optics concerning the Studio Buds. However, we don’t know when that will happen as of now.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE suspended due to supply chain issues

The Galaxy S20 FE was a huge success and one of last year’s popular phones, so it is no surprise that its successor is greatly anticipated. Unfortunately, the Galaxy S21 FE might not arrive this year according to new reports that say the device has been suspended.

The info was first reported by Twitter user, Chun (chunvn8888), who posted earlier today that the Galaxy S21 FE “has been suspended for at least a month”. He adds that this development means we won’t see the device arrive before September and that if the situation gets worse, the device may end up being canceled.

In a quoted tweet, he reveals that the reason for the suspension has to do with the battery, chipset, and higher prices. If you are a bit confused, you shouldn’t be as the Chinese leaker, Ice Universe, explains the situation better.

The TECNO CAMON 17 Pro features a standard 2021 design featuring a punch-hole selfie shooter upfront and a rectangular camera module at the back. While the design looks plain, there’s a gentle texture to it, and combined with the soft curves and the rounded corners, the overall design looks pretty elegant for a device in its price range.

When compared to its previous generation, the TECNO CAMON 17 Pro brings a side mounted fingerprint sensor. This ensures that the back remains clean while ensuring a fast fingerprint unlocking experience.

On the front, you get a pretty good 6.8-inch IPS display with 90Hz refresh rate for smooth scrolling. You also get a dedicated headphone jack along with a Type-C port for connectivity.

The CAMON 17 Pro comes with a pretty powerful Helio G95 chip, unlike the CAMON 17 which has the G85. You also get up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. This ensures that the phone can handle any task that you throw at it, including mobile games like PUBG.

You also get a large 5000mAh battery inside which will ensure long battery life. The charger isn’t the fastest we’ve seen, but at 33W it does a decent job at filling up this large battery quickly. 

As for software, the phone features the HiOS 7.6 based on Android 11.

The quad-camera module featuring a 64MP shooter protrudes a bit from the body. But most of you won’t have an issue with this design, considering the camera is quite capable. The other three cameras include an 8MP ultra-wide sensor, a 2MP depth sensor, and another 2MP monochrome sensor.

The camera hardware is pretty good for a $300 smartphone, but what makes it interesting is the new AI-powered photo and videography features. You get SuperNight mode for brighter and clearer low-light images (unfortunately, its not available for the wide-angle camera). There are other modes such as time-lapse, slow motion, and even a film mode with custom video templates like street, party, performance, sport etc. These templates along with other features can help you to create cool-looking videos with minimal effort.

Verdict

Overall, the TECNO CAMON 17 Pro is a well-balanced device in its price segment. The 48MP front and 64MP rear cameras ensure that you get a good camera experience, while the Helio G95 chip ensures that the phone is powerful enough to handle everyday tasks, including gaming.

It has been reported that the Chinese manufacturer will unveil its very first laptop, tablet, as well as a robot vacuum cleaner on that day too.

Honor 50 series – June 16

The Honor 50 series will be announced on June 16 in China. The series will include three phones – the Honor 50 Pro, Honor 50, and Honor 50 SE. The first two will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 778G processor while the SE model will come with MediaTek’s Dimensity 900 processor. Ahead of the launch on Wednesday, the full specifications of all three devices have been leaked.

A new TicWatch – June 16

Mobvoi, the Google-invested company known for its TicWatch line of smartwatches will launch a new watch on June 16. There are speculations that the new watch is the TicWatch E3, a Snapdragon Wear 4100-powered wearable running Wear OS.

Black Shark started as a gaming smartphone brand, but like many other phone manufacturers, it has expanded its product lineup to include other items, though the bulk of them are still focused on gaming. Its latest product is a new version of the FunCooler 2 cooling fan specifically designed for the iPhone 12 series.

The FunCooler 2 Magnetic Version is designed to attach to the magnet on the back of the iPhone 12 phones. Apple included magnets in the latest iPhone series which allow peripherals and accessories to magnetically attach to the back of the device. Apple has its own plethora of accessories that take advantage of this design and there are also accessories from third-party manufacturers too.

Black Shark says the new FunCooler 2 Magnetic Version is 62mm wide and 22mm thick, making it one of the smallest (external) cooling fans in the world. The small form factor also means it isn’t causing an obstruction when gaming. There are 15 Iron-Boron magnets in the cooling fan, providing a secure attachment to the phone. The overall weight of 73 grams also reduces the strain on the user’s wrists.

The FunCooler 2 Magnetic Version is yet to get a price and release date as the manufacturer said those details will be announced later. We expect it to go on sale in China first before making its way to other regions.

There have been speculations on the date of the launch of the latest OnePlus high-end smartphones, and a rumored June 15 date has been linked to the OnePlus Nord N200 5G. On the back of the recent launch of the OnePlus Nord CE 5G in India, a listing spotted on the US telecommunications regulator – FCC’s website points to the imminent launch of two OnePlus smartphones in the US and Canada. While OnePlus has officially confirmed the device, nothing has been officially revealed in terms of the launch date. However, the two devices spotted on the FCC website had model numbers DE2117 and DE2118. Some industry experts have speculated that the two devices were both variants of the Nord N200, as the details revealed in the FCC listing point in this direction. The imminent launch date is further accentuated with a similar listing of the devices on the Bluetooth SIG certification website.

Sources say that the two OnePlus smartphones may be variants of the Nord N200 for different countries. Both models have similar connectivity support, including 5G. The OnePlus Nord 200 5G could offer a mixture of features from some of the OnePlus predecessors, like the Nord N10 5G. It could come with the Snapdragon 480 chipset and a 5,000 mAh battery, with 18W fast charging support.

As we move closer to a possible June 15 launch in the US and Canada, we expect to see more details about the specs and price of the N200 5G, although sources have put the price within the $250 range. Thus, the coming days will likely justify the hype surrounding the Nord N200 5G.
