TSMC to build world’s first exclusive water plant, won’t shift chip production to China

The Taiwanese Ministry of Economic Affairs has recently denied rumors that TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) would be shifting its chip manufacturing capacity to China.

TSMC

According to a WccfTech report, rumors had recently surfaced that the world’s largest contract chipmaker would be shifting its chip production to China. The move was reportedly due to the water shortage issue that the company is facing due to the drought that has affected the nation. For those unaware, a large amount of water is required by the firm for its operations. Thus, the Taiwanese Ministry denied these rumors regarding shift of production for processes like the 28nm nodes.

As per the Taiwanese Ministry, the chip maker has long term investment in the region has no plans on relocating its existing chip manufacturing capacities to China due to water constraints. Rather, the company is aiming on building a new facility that will help in facing a similar situation in the future. Unfortunately for the firm, while this new water plant will help in the future, it would not be able to help ease its current predicament.

TSMC

This will also mark the world’s first exclusive water plant that is set up for a single company alone. In other words, the plant will be able to improve the water related enterprise risk management for TSMC in the future. For its current situation, the company has resorted to using water tankers to test groundwater for chip fabrication, which is a process that requires a large amount of water.

Huawei Mate 40 Pro 4G could be first phone with HarmonyOS, reveals TENAA listing

Last week, the upcoming Huawei Mate 40 Pro 4G smartphone was found listed on Huawei China’s website. Except for its OS, pricing, and availability, the listing revealed everything about the smartphone. Ahead of the official announcement, the Mate 40 Pro 4G (NOH-AL00) has surfaced in the database of China’s TENAA telecom authority. The listing reveals that it is running on Huawei’s very own HarmonyOS.

Huawei Mate 40 Pro 4G with HarmonyOS

To be precise, the TENAA listing states that the Mate 40 Pro 4G is equipped with the latest HarmonyOS 2.0. Also known as HongMengOS, the HarmonyOS is a microkernel-based OS designed for its Huawei devices. It was announced in August 2019 i.e., three months after a trade ban was levied on Huawei by the US, which resulted in losing access to Google services on the official edition of Android.

Probably, the HarmonyOS 2.0 is expected to offer a unique user experience as compared to Android and iOS. The Mate 40 Pro 4G is also expected to come equipped with Huawei Mobile Services (HMS). A recent report claimed that Huawei is seeking to bring HarmonyOS to 300 million devices this year. The Mate 40 Pro 4G is likely to debut soon as the company’s first phone with HarmonyOS. The upcoming MatePad Pro 2, Mate X2 4G, and P50 series are expected to arrive preloaded with HarmonyOS 2.0.

Huawei Mate 40 Pro 4G specifications

In terms of specs, the Huawei Mate 40 Pro 4G has the same specs as its 5G sibling. It has a 6.76-inch OLED screen with a dual punch-hole cutout, which offers a 1344 x 2772 pixels resolution. Xiaomi tipped to launch a new smartphone with 200-megapixel camera

Xiaomi has been focusing on the camera department for its premium high-end devices and now it seems that the company is gearing up to launch a new smartphone that will come with a larger camera sensor.

As per the report from Digital Chat Room (via ITHome), Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is working on a smartphone that will feature a 200-megapixel camera sensor, which will be the largest camera sensor for a phone. Currently, 108-megapixel is the largest camera sensor that a smartphone offers.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Black Camera

It is believed that the sensor will come from Samsung and is expected to have 0.64um unit pixel, but far less than the 1.4μm unit pixel area of ISOCELL GN2. At this time, we don’t have much information about the sensor.

Recently, well-known leakster @IceUniverse had revealed that the South Korean tech giant is planning to launch a new innovative sensor this year under the company’s ISOCELL that will have a 200-megapixel image sensor.

Samsung has also hinted that it is developing a 200-megapixel image sensor as the successor of the 108-megapixel sensor found in the Galaxy S21 Ultra. While not yet confirmed, the company is likely to use the new 200MP sensor on the upcoming Galaxy S22 series flagship smartphones. It could also end up being a part of the company’s new foldable smartphone.

This isn’t the only high megapixel count sensor that Samsung is working on. Last year, the company announced that it is working on a 600-megapixel smartphone image sensor, although, it will take years before the technology gets commercial. Meanwhile, we are waiting for a smartphone equipped with a 200-megapixel camera sensor to launch, which should happen quite soon.

Huawei to reportedly launch test satellites for 6G technology verification in July

5G technology has now gone mainstream when it comes to offering support on consumer electronics like smartphones, although the deployment of 5G infrastructure is still limited to developed countries online while developing nations are working towards it.

As 5G communication technology has reached the milestone, companies have now started working on the next-generation technology — 6G. One of the leaders in this segment, the Chinese giant Huawei, is now moving towards the next step.

Huawei Logo MWC 2019

Report coming from China, citing Chang’an Shumajun as source who has close ties to Huawei, says that Huawei is all set to launch two satellites together with partnership of two Chinese companies in July this year. It aims to verify the 6G network technologies that the company has developed.

With the launch of satellites for the 6G verification, Huawei will have a major lead in the Research & Development globally for the 6G technology. The launch will be a joint effort from Huawei, China Mobile, and a national space firm. This will have a great significance for China’s core technologies such as networking and switching.

Experts believe that the 6G technology will be 50 times after than 5G. Compared with the construction of 5G networks that rely on base stations to transmit signals, 6G networks, conveying higher frequencies, need using satellite for communications instead of base stations where there will be low penetrability.

Xu Zhijun, rotating chairman of Huawei, announced earlier this month that the tech giant will launch its 6G networks in 2030, and it will release a 6G-related white paper soon to explain to the industry what 6G technology is.

China is the leader when it comes to the 5G footprint around the world and is likely to have a further lead with 6G development efforts. It’s impressive to see that China as well as Huawei moving ahead even at times when there are significant restrictions due to the sanctions from the United States.

EXIF data shows Google may have mistakenly shared the Pixel 5a camera sample

While the details might have been interesting, the post also contained a photo output from the unreleased Pixel 5a phone, reflecting a powerful camera.Google Pixel 5A

The EXIF data of one of the pictures within the post revealed some details, including the camera used to capture the shot. The data shows the sample came from the unannounced Pixel 5a and the picture was taken on October 1, 2020, in Taiwan. We can’t say if the sample was shared by mistake or intentionally but the Pixel 5a sample seems to have been taken off the blog post.

However, it surely indicates that we are getting closer to the launch of the smartphone even amidst claims in some quarters that the Pixel 5a 5G model was non-existent or may have been canceled outrightly. Google has since dispelled such rumors, confirming that the Pixel 5a is still in the works.

Earlier rumors indicate the Pixel 5a 5G will run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G chipset and will have a few enhanced features. The device will come with a hole-punch selfie snapper. It will also feature a 6.2-inch Hi-Res FHD+ display and will have a similar refresh rate as that of the Pixel 4a 5G. Nokia 5G phone with 108MP penta-lens camera and QHD+ 120Hz display could be in works

HMD Global launched the Nokia 9 PureView back in 2019 as the world’s first phone with a penta-lens camera setup. While several reports have talked about its successor model, the Finnish firm has steered away from launching a flagship device. Fresh information shared by the Nokia Power User claims that the company is working on an upper mid-range phone with a penta-lens setup, which will be succeeding the Nokia 8.3 5G smartphone. Probably, this device may arrive in the market as an X-series phone.

The report claims that the Nokia 8.3 5G’s successor will be sporting a penta-lens setup with a 108-megapixel primary camera. The device will not be coming to the market as the Nokia 8.4 5G, but it is likely to be called Nokia X50.

The handset is expected to feature a 6.5-inch PureDisplay V4 that that offers a Quad HD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The report states that it is powered by the smartphone will be powered by the unannounced Snapdragon 775G chipset (SM7350 model number).

The device is likely to be powered by a 6,000mAh battery. Recently, a 6,000mAh battery for an upcoming Nokia phone was spotted at the TUV certification platform. The listing revealed that it will arrive with support for 22.5W rapid charging.

There is no word on the other cameras of the alleged Nokia X50 phone. However, the penta-lens setup is expected to include an ultrawide lens, a depth sensor, a macro shooter, and a telephoto snapper. The device is likely to feature ZEISS optics and OZO Audio technology. The report has no other information on its specifications.

It is not clear whether Qualcomm will be launching a chip called the Snapdragon 775G. The recent behind it is that the US-based chipmaker has already announced the 5nm Snapdragon 780G chipset as the successor to the older Snapdragon 765/765G chip. The part number of this chip is SM7350-AB. Hence, it is not clear which processor will be fueling the alleged Nokia X50.
