Apple iPhone 12 first ever teardown exposes smaller battery, and MagSafe Coil

Apple launched the iPhone 12 series almost ten days back. At the event, it promised improved battery life over the last generation as usual. However, reports started arising with details exposing smaller capacity of battery on the models. Now, a teardown in China confirms that iPhone 12 has a smaller battery compared to its predecessor.

Apple iPhone 12

This is probably the first teardown of an iPhone 12 series device. And, it is uploaded on YouTube by a channel named “Black MOB”(via PhoneArena). The video opens out to show the boxy design of the Apple iPhone 12 with rounded corners and it’s the Blue color that undergoes the operation this time. First up, the 6.1-inch OLED display seems to be a bit thinner compared to the iPhone 11. This is probably due to the edges of the glass that curve slightly on the predecessor.

iPhone 12: L-shaped SoC and smaller battery

The well-known iPad Pro‘s design has paid-off for a slightly flatter design. Moving on, the rear camera unit inside has a similar shape compared to the 11 but with few layout changes. Also, the motherboard is L-shaped this time and is bigger than the one on iPhone 11. Further teardown shows a smaller speaker unit and a much smaller Taptic engine. It’s surprising how Apple is able to pull-off improvements despite shrinking the size.

Removing the front camera unit along with Face-ID sensors reveals an unchanged unit. Now we get to the important part, the battery. This teardown clearly reveals that iPhone 12 has a 2,815mAh battery. This is a 9.4% lesser capacity than the 3,110mAh on the iPhone 11. A smaller battery is probably to offset the cost that’s already involved due to 5G and match the form factor as well. Speaking of which, it has the Qualcomm X55 5G modem.

Moving on, removing the Lightning port shows it’s attached independently and not integrated with the rest of the board. Finally, the MagSafe Coil is revealed. It is attached to the rear panel. There are magnets arranged circularly to hold the charger in place. The middle space is where the coil meets the charger to inductively charge the battery.

At the moment, facial and fingerprint based recognition are the only two methods that are supported.

Unfortunately, these features are still under development and it is currently unknown when they will be available for WhatsApp beta users or even the live build. A preview is available right now and WaBetaInfo shared multiple screenshots of this upcoming build as well. So stay tuned for more updates.

Samsung Display trademarks “Blade Bezel” for its panels

Lately, the Samsung group has been patenting a number of designs and utilities for foldable smartphones. That does not mean the company has given up on normal slab handsets. Because its latest trademark related to normal smartphone bezels.

Samsung Logo Blue Featured

LetsGoDigital is well-known for patent and trademark coverage. The publication has now unearthed a trademark called “Blade Bezel” filed by Samsung Display with the KIPO (Korean Intellectual Property Office) on October 16.

The application for this trademark is categorized as Class 9 meant for large screen display, smartphone display, LCD, LED, OLED, digital camera display, and video screen.

The description suggests that Samsung Display may use the Blade Bezel trademark with a plethora of devices like televisions, monitors, smartphones, and cameras. However, it does not mention the appearance of this kind of bezel.

Going by the word “Blade”, we can assume these bezels to be flat without any curves. So Samsung Display may use this trademark for its flatter slim bezel panels.

Anyway, companies file a wide variety of patents and trademarks but not all of them are used by them. These filings are mostly for securing their original ideas so that no other companies, especially competitors could use them.

Indian Smartphone Market rebounds in Q3 2020 with marginal growth

The Indian smartphone market is showing signs of recovery as the market sees a growth of 8 percent to 50 million units in the third quarter of 2020. This marks an all time record for smartphone shipments in a single quarter.

Indian

According to a Canalys report, Xiaomi is still the market leader in the country and saw a growth of 9 percent to ship 13.1 million units during this period. Similarly, Samsung also saw a notable growth of 7 percent in Q3, with total shipments arriving at 10.2 million units. This had the South Korean tech giant regain its 2nd position from Vivo, which now stood 3rd with a total shipment of 8.8 million units with a growth of 19 percent.

Other Chinese brands like Realme and Oppo rounded up the list with 8.7 million and 6.1 million units respectively. Adwait Mardikar, an analyst from Canalys stated that “The government, slowly but surely reducing restrictions on movement after a three month lockdown, has created the perfect atmosphere for sustained growth. While almost all vendors have shown positive shipment growth, the true winners are the online channels, who have been buoyed with a huge influx of devices ahead of the festive season. Ongoing sales at Amazon and Flipkart are a clear indication that despite the economic downturn, India’s penchant for a good smartphone, and a good bargain, remains intact.”

Indian

In other words, as the local market recovers as things normalize after the lockdowns that occurred earlier this year. Furthermore, recent launches paired with sales have also boosted the pent up demand in the nation. Even Apple has finally opened a new direct online store in India, which should broaden its strategy in regards to sales incentives and more. Although, its newly launched iPhone 12 series might be a “tough sell” this year, especially considering 5G networking is yet to be available for the mass market.

China to take action against Swedish companies if Huawei 5G ban isn’t reversed

China is urging the Swedish government to reverse its decision of banning Huawei and ZTE from its 5G network. The two Chinese companies are known telecommunications equipment providers and China has asked Sweden to reverse the decision or face “negative impacts” on its own companies.

Huawei

According to a Reuters report, Zhao Lijian, a foreign ministry spokesman, stated that “China expresses strong dissatisfaction with Sweden.” For those unaware, the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) has banned Huawei and ZTE from its 5G network earlier this week, just prior to the local government auctioning its 5G spectrum to various telecom operators.

Zhao further added that “Sweden should uphold an objective and fair attitude, and correct its wrong decision, to avoid bringing a negative impact to China-Sweden economic and trade cooperation and the operations of Swedish enterprises in China.” The reason behind the ban is national security concerns, with PTS following advice from the country’s armed forces and security service that labeled the Chinese tech giants as one of the biggest threats against Sweden”.

Huawei

This marks the recent trend of various European governments banning Chinese carriers and telecom communications equipment makers like Huawei and ZTE from their 5G infrastructure. It also arrives amid the various pressures the companies face from the US government, which accuses these brands of espionage. A claim that Huawei has denied on multiple counts.

Xiaomi Mi Notebook 14 was briefly available for ₹25,519 (42% off)

Xiaomi entered India’s laptop market in the first half of 2020 with Mi Notebook 14 and Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition. These notebooks are unlike most products laptops in their price segment with a metal unibody design. They are exclusive to Amazon India, Mi online store, and partner retailers. But earlier today, a seller on Flipkart sold one of these laptops at almost half of its price tag for a short period of time.

Xiaomi Mi Notebook 14 India Featured

The Xiaomi laptop model that was on offer was the mid-variant of Mi Notebook 14 with Intel Core-i5, 8GB RAM, and 512GB SSD. This version normally costs ₹43,999. But a seller sold it for only ₹25,519 for a short period of time.

To avail this offer, buyers had to checkout the laptop with Mi Webcam (₹1,469), which is usually bundled with the notebook automatically on Mi Online Store and Amazon India.

Adding the Mi Webcam to the cart with Mi Notebook should drop the price of the webcam to ₹0. However, due to a glitch, instead of discounting the price of Webcam, it added a whopping ₹18,480 discount (42% off) to the laptop, bringing its price down to ₹25,519 from ₹43,999.

So customers who managed to order the product had to pay a total of ₹26,988, which includes the discounted price of the laptop (₹25,519) as well as the selling price of the webcam (₹1,469).

That said, not all the orders went through as some of the orders got canceled a few minutes after confirmation but many did not. Currently, both Mi Notebook 14 and Mi Webcam are out of stock on Flipkart with a “Coming Soon” notice.

Huawei and other Chinese firms seeking to curb Nvidia’s ARM acquisition deal

NVIDIA recently announced that the company has agreed to acquire SoftBank-owned ARM Holdings for a whopping sum of $40 billion, making it one of the biggest acquisitions globally in the tech sector.

The Chinese companies fear that the deal will become yet another weapon for the United States government to cut off access to new technologies for the China-based companies as the US-China trade war intensifies.

ARM’s semiconductor designs and architecture are fundamental to several products, including smartphone processors, server chips, AI applications, and more. China could wield its power over this deal given that it is the world’s largest market for semiconductors as it imports chips worth about $300 billion annually.
