MediaTek launches Dimensity 720 5G chipset for mid-range smartphones

MediaTek has launched a few chipsets under its Dimensty lineup of 5G SoCs. Today, the company has announced yet another chipset which is aimed towards mid-range smartphones — MediaTek Dimensity 720.

The chipset is slotted just below the Dimensity 800 and the flagship chipset in the lineup Dimensity 1000 and 1000+. It seems that MediaTek doesn’t want to leave any stones unturned and launch a chipset for every possible price range, similar to Qualcomm.

MediaTek Dimensity 720 Chipset

The MediaTek Dimensity 720 is manufactured using TSMC‘s 7nm process. It comes with an integrated 5G modem that supports 2CC carrier aggregation, VoNR, 5G/4G Dual SIM dual standby, and sub-6GHz 5G.

It also has MediaTek 5G UltraSave technology which uses both network and content awareness intelligence to manage the modem’s operating mode in real-time to further extend the battery life.

The chipset packs two ARM Cortex-A76 big cores operating at 2GHz in the octa-core CPU, which the company claims to improve the responsiveness of applications for fluid user experience. It also packs an ARM Mali G57 GPU, up to 12GB fast LPDDR4X memory and UFS 2.2 storage for fast read/write speeds.

EDITOR’S PICK: Samsung announces plans for 6G technology; launch expected by the end of this Decade

This new Dimensity 720 SoC has support for 90Hz high frame-rate displays along with enhanced video streaming capabilities like MiraVision HDR10+ with support for Dynamic Range Remapping.

As for the camera configuration, it supports up to 64-megapixel single sensor or a dual-camera setup consisting of a 20-megapixel and 16-megapixel sensors. It packs a range of AI-related features that are powered by MediaTek’s integrated APU.

MediaTek Dimensity 720 Features

To minimize the power consumption of always-on voice assistants, the company has included a feature called Voice Wakeup (VoW). It also supports dual-mic noise suppression so that voice assistant can hear the audio more clearly.

With the launch of Dimensity 800-series and Dimensity 1000-series, the company was focused on gaming-related features as well, which doesn’t seem to be the case for this Dimensity 720. The focus of this new chipset seems to be global sub-6GHz 5G support.

The company has confirmed that the MediaTek Dimensity 720 chipset will be powering the mid-range smartphones in regions like North America, Europe, and Asia. However, the company has not provided any timeline for the launch of devices powered by this SoC.

DxOMark has rated the ROG Phone 3 high, ranking it second with a score of 75 behind the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro. The test involved measuring the performance in terms of recording with its built-in microphones and how well it plays back audio through its speakers.

The ROG Phone 3 packs stereo front-facing cameras with Dirac Research immersive audio technology. It also has four microphones for 3D recording. BOE unveils an array of new display techs; Mini-LEDs, flexible AMOLED & more

The International Display Technology and Application Innovation Exhibition (DIC EXPO 2020) opened in Shanghai, China on June 22 and will run till June 24. At the event, Chinese display manufacturer BOE Technologies has unveiled several innovative display technologies and solutions such as flexible AMOLED, Mini-LEDs, and under-screen cameras.

The most captivating products are the expected 27-inch Mini LED alongside a 15.6-inch Mini LED both of which attracted great attention. BOE’s Mini LED products can achieve a million-level ultra-high contrast ratio and provide a more pure and natural display effect.

Mini-LED is a new display technology that promises improved contrast ratios and deeper blacks compared to LCD panels that are lit with regular LEDs (light-emitting diodes). As the name suggests, mini-LEDs are a lot smaller than regular LEDs. Diodes that are smaller than 0.2 mm are generally classed as mini-LEDs.

The emerging display technology is touted to be the next-generation display technology and it is presently the focus of local manufacturers in China. There are even speculations that Apple is planning to utilise Mini LEDs on its upcoming products in order to solve the problem of OLED burn-in and improve product durability. A shift to mini LEDs will also help to reduce its dependence on Samsung, the dominant player in the OLED industry.

Also, the company unveiled a 32:9 ultra-wide OLED curved display, an outer folding screen and a flexible OLED notebook display with a narrow bezel.

Yet another innovative product showcased at the tech show is a flexible screen with under-screen camera technology. The under-screen camera technology erases the style of using a notch or hole-punch design and also delivers an immersive user experience.

Furthermore, the company took the wraps off a 3D face recognition technology implemented under the display which offers users a new, smarter and more convenient way of unlocking gadgets using face detection.

Finally, BOE also brought a 75-inch, 110-inch 8K BD Cell display, innovatively applying total reflection display technology to tablet computers, e-books, TVs, outdoor advertising machines, bus stop signs and other fields.

Galaxy Note20 leaks in full: trimmed and flat but still awesome

The Galaxy Note20 series launches in two weeks. If you want to know what the standard Galaxy Note20 looks like and packs in terms of specs, you are in luck, as a leak has revealed its complete spec sheet as well as official renders.

Galaxy Note20 featured

The source of the leak is none other than the German website, Winfuture.de, and they say the flagship will come in 4G and 5G variants.

The Galaxy Note20 ditches the curved display of its predecessor for a flat one. However, it is larger at 6.7-inches and its resolution is 2400 x 1080. It also has a hole in the middle for the selfie camera. This is a Super AMOLED panel and there is no high refresh rate.

Under the hood is the Exynos 990 processor (yeah, we already knew this was going to happen). While it will handle anything you throw at it, there will be a significant gap in performance between it and the Snapdragon 865 Plus version that will sell in China and the US. Europe will get the phone in a single variant – 8GB RAM + 256GB, but we won’t be surprised if new configurations are available in other regions.

EDITOR’S PICK: Samsung announces plans for 6G – Launch Expected By the End of the Decade

Coming to cameras, the Galaxy Note20 is shown to pack triple rear sensors. Two of these are 12MP sensors with one having 1.8µm pixels and dual-pixel autofocus while the other is an ultrawide angle camera with an f/2.2 aperture and a 1.4µm pixels. The third camera is a 64MP f/2.0 telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and  1.0µm pixels. The device will be able to record in 8K and also have 30x Space Zoom.

The Galaxy Note20 will have NFC, Bluetooth 5, Wi-Fi 6, dual-GPS, and a USB-C gen 3.2 port. The phone packs stereo speakers tuned by AKG, dual SIM support, eSIM support, and also has an IP68 rating. It packs a 4300mAh battery which is a big bump from the 3500mAh capacity of the Galaxy Note10. There is support for fast charging, wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging but the power rating wasn’t revealed.

Oh! Of course, there is a stylus with a latency of 26ms (not as low as that of the Galaxy Note20 Ultra). It also has support for Microsoft’s Cloud game streaming service. No surprises here seeing as Samsung already killed off its short-lived PlayGalaxy Link streaming service early this year. If you picked up the Glap Controller last year, it should still work with the Galaxy Note20 series.

The Galaxy Note20 also supports the new Wireless DeX mode that allows you to use the device in a desktop-like interface on an external display without the need for wires.

The phone will be available in Mystic Black, Mystic Bronze, and Mystic Green when it launches on August 5.

The $99 1MORE ColorBuds are colorful but lack ANC

1MORE has a new pair of TWS earbuds, they are pretty colorful which explains why they are named the 1More ColorBuds. However, they are not as cheap as one would expect.

1MORE ColorBuds

The ColorBuds are similar in design to the Redmi AirDots which means there are no stems sticking out of your ears. They do look premium with their dual-tone metallic finish and come in Midnight Black, Twilight Gold, Spearmint Green, and Sakura Pink. 1More says their streamlined ergonomic design provides long-lasting comfort.

The spec sheet says each of the earbuds weighs 4.1 grams. They feature a full-range balanced armature driver and are tuned by Grammy award-winning sound engineer, Luca Bignardi.

1MORE ColorBuds

There are four microphones on the earbuds (two on each) combined with cVC 8.0 Environmental Noise Cancellation for crystal-clear voice calls.

EDITOR’S PICK: Xiaomi Mi Band 5 Review: A Worthy Upgrade to the Mi Band 4

The 1MORE ColorBuds will automatically pair with your device when the case is opened and stop playback when you remove them from your ears thanks to an infrared sensor on each earbud. You can also adjust playback settings in the 1MORE Music app. Touch controls are also supported, so double-tap to answer and end calls, double-tap to play and pause playback, and triple-tap to activate voice control.

1MORE ColorBuds

Battery life is put at 6 hours with an additional 16 hours with the charging case. There is support for Fast Charge – 15 minutes charge will provide 2 hours of playback – which pales in comparison to that of the OnePlus Buds which provides 10 hours of listening time after charging for just 10 minutes.

They connect over Bluetooth 5.0 and support SBC, AAC, and aptX audio codecs. 1MORE says they have an IPX5 rating which makes them resistant to sweat and water.

The 1MORE ColorBuds are priced at $99 which is a bit pricey seeing as they don’t have ANC. However, if you want earbuds that do not look like AirPods clones, then they should suffice.

Realme smartphones’ global user base hits 40 million

Among the top 10 smartphone manufacturers globally, Realme Mobile is the youngest. The company was launched as a brand on May 4 2018 but within this short period, it has achieved so much. It is currently one of the Top 7 mobile phone brands as well as among the Top 5 in 9 markets out of the 59 markets where it’s officially present.

There are 40 million Realme users around the globe as of now. Most as of late, 150,000 joined that bunch in only 2 minutes when the new Realme C11 went on sale. Prior to that, it moved 70,000 Narzo 10 units in a similar timeframe.

To give you a thought of how rapidly the brand has developed, we should rewind the tape. Realme arrived at one million sales in September of 2018, only months after it joined the market. It hit 10 million shipments in August 2019 and reached 25 million in January of this current year. Just two months back (May), it announced a total user base of 35 million globally. In essence, the company pushed around 5 million units between May and now. That is no mean feat especially considering the slump in the smartphone market occasioned by the COVID 19 pandemic. We may soon see the company announce it has reached the 50 million mark going by the rate at which it releases amazing and affordable smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 & Z Flip 5G batteries will be supplied by Samsung SDI

Details have emerged about the batteries of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip 5G foldable smartphones. According to sources familiar with the matter, the battery packs for both models will be supplied by Samsung SDI.Samsung

The source also confirmed that the batteries for the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Flip were equally manufactured by Samsung’s own factory. The company reportedly manufactures the battery cells in its factory in Tianjin, China while the aspects of assembling the batteries to modules and packs as well as applying protective circuits are carried out at its factory in Vietnam.

However, Samsung SDI has been unable to meet up the supply. This reportedly led to the ceding of some of the supply for smartphones such as Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S20 series to rival LG Chem. Samsung Electronics is also using China’s ATL and BYD as battery suppliers for its Galaxy A and M series.

The decision to use Samsung SDI again for the foldable phone is mainly due to cost. The specifications of the batteries are near similar to previous foldable smartphone models so there is no need to make a new mold, which is costly.

The Galaxy Fold 2 is said to pack a twin 2275mAh and 2090mAh batteries. While the Galaxy Z Flip 5G which was announced today are said to use a 2500mAh and 704mAh battery packs but the launch details a 3300mAh battery.

The Galaxy Fold 2 is expected to be unveiled at Samsung’s Unpacked Event on August 5.

Black Shark 3S teased by CEO; may come with Snapdragon 865+ too

A new gaming smartphone is coming soon and it may be powered by the Snapdragon 865 Plus processor. The phone is the Black Shark 3S and it was teased earlier today by the company’s CEO.

Black Shark’s CEO Luo Yuzhou took to Weibo today with a post that roughly translates into “Lately, I feel something big is about to happen.”. The post was also quoted by the official Black Shark account. While the cryptic message doesn’t reveal much if at all, it is actually Weibo that comes to the rescue with its “device identifier”.

Black Shark 3S

As you can see in the image, the CEO made the post with the yet-to-be-announced Tencent Black Shark 3S gaming smartphone. This is most definitely the big surprise he is referring to in his post.

There are speculations the phone will come with the Snapdragon 865 Plus Mobile Platform just like the Lenovo Legion Phone Duel and the ASUS ROG Phone 3. This is not far fetched seeing as Black Shark’s second flagship for last year, the Black Shark 2 Pro launched with a Snapdragon 855+ processor.

The specifications and design of the phone are currently unknown. We also cannot tell if the Black Shark 3S will be getting a “Pro” version since the Black Shark 3 launched alongside a pro version in March.

Are you excited for the Black Shark 3S? What new features do you think it will bring? Do let us know in the comment box.

The gaming smartphone category just got bigger with the entry of the Lenovo Legion Phone Duel. The device is practically the first phone in the world with a Snapdragon 865 Plus processor, and it will be challenging the ASUS ROG Phone 3 which also launches today.

Lenovo Legion Phone Duel

Legion Phone Duel Design

Just as ASUS has adopted the name of its gaming PC line, ROG, Lenovo has done the same by adopting “Legion” which is the name of its gaming PC line. The name is pasted boldly on the back of the device and the familiar “Y” logo which houses a multicolor LED can also be seen on the back. The Legion Phone Duel is available in two colorways – black and blue, which appear to have different finishes.

Specifications and Features

When it comes to specs, the Legion Phone Duel is pretty impressive. It has a 6.59-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate and a 240Hz touch sampling rate. While Lenovo has gone for a full-screen design (no notch or punch hole), the phone still has some bezels at the top and bottom. The device also boasts front-facing stereo speakers.

Legion Phone Duel

The Snapdragon 865 Plus processor clocked at 3.1GHz is paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB of storage. The device scored a whopping 648871 points on AnTuTu.

There are two cameras on the back of the device and they are placed in an unusual position just like the 20MP f/2.2 selfie camera which slides out of the side rather than the top. The 64MP f/1.89 camera and its 16MP ultrawide angle companion are positioned in the middle of the phone just next to the Legion logo.

Over 150K Realme C11 units sold in just 2 minutes in its first sale in India

Realme launched the Realme C11 in India last week but the phone did not go on sale immediately. It went on its first sale earlier today via the company’s local site and Flipkart. and records from Realme shows that it was sold out in just minutes. This time around, the company disclosed the number of units sold and it is over 150,000 units.

Selling over 150,000 units in just two minutes is no mean feat and we believe more units would have been mopped up by fans if available. But interested buyers would have to wait till July 29 or the next sale.

The phone’s price has definitely played a role in the massive interest in the model. The Realme C11 adopts a Rs 7,499 ($100) price tag for the sole 2GB and 32GB variant. The phone is powered by an Helio G35 chipset and sports a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD display with HD+ resolution. It runs on Android 10-based Realme UI and gets its power from a 5000mAh battery with reverse charging support.

The phone which comes in Green and Grey colours packs a dual-camera setup at the rear comprising a 13MP main sensor and a 2MP depth sensor. There is also a 5MP selfie shooter.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra to support Xbox Game Streaming service and improved S-Pen

With the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series launch being just around the corner, new reports regarding the lineup have been surfacing. The latest one reveals a few details regarding a supposed Microsoft Xbox optimization along with a new “real feel” S-Pen.

Samsung

According to a WinFuture report, the South Korean tech giant is placing a lot of emphasis on its stylus for the smartphone. The new S-Pen will feature a response time lower than 9ms, to make the interface and writing smoother than before and feel closer to writing on paper. The company is also reportedly working with Microsoft to bring certain other features like OneNote synchronization and gesture commands as well.

Samsung

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will also be the first smartphone to feature optimizations for cloud gaming via Xbox Game Pass. In other words, the company is attempting to include Microsoft’s Project xCloud into the device. This means that 5G networking in the device will leverage built in game streaming framework to optimize games from different platforms to the handset.

For those unaware, Project xCloud is Microsoft’s counterpart of the Google Stadia game streaming service. In layman’s terms, Samsung is trying to make the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra into a pocket game console that might also be able to leverage the higher refresh rate in the device for improved gameplay and visual fidelity. While unconfirmed, this is also reinforced by Samsung’s latest tease for the Unpacked event 2020 on Twitter, which said “the power to play from anywhere” alongside game controller symbols in the short video.

Redmi K30 Pro Zoom scores 120 points in DxOMark tests, reaches the Top 10 rankings

DxOMark has just released the scores for the Redmi K30 Pro Zoom. The device scored 120 points in the ratings and has reached the top 10 rated smartphone camera.

Redmi

The Redmi K30 Pro Zoom features a quad camera module on the rear with a 64 megapixel Quad Bayer sensor on the front, along with an 8 megapixel telephoto lens, 13 megapixel ultra wide camera and a depth sensor as well. It scored 129 points in photography while videography had it achieve 101 points. This makes it sit right at the tenth spot in the top rate smartphone list.

The Redmi K30 Pro Zoom was praised for its quick and accurate autofocus, great exposure, good magnification capabilities, and decent color reproduction. However, tests revealed low detail in indoor zoom shots, color shift issues, and certain loss in texture and tones. While its bokeh and other effects were praised, it’s ultra wide shots lacked in detail and suffered from noise. Despite this, the great outdoor performance had it net a high score.

Redmi

In terms of videography, DxOMark tests reported on great color reproduction again, alongside a good performance in stabilization during moving shots thanks to its OIS (optical image stabilization. Autofocus was still a strong suit in this category as well, and so was exposure. Although, there was certain issue with focus instabilities, color fringing, and some noticeable aliasing artifacts. But all in all, the device was said to be a great performer for its price range.

According to a new leak, the Kospet Prime 2 will house a 2.1-inch large display with 480 x 480 pixels resolution. It will be much larger than the standard smartwatches which carry a display of 1.4-inch. The larger display will improve smartwatch usability and even facilitates a better viewing experience. However, there are several other advantages of a larger display.

Furthermore, Kospet Prime 2 is expected to house energy-efficient and powerful Helio P22 chipset coupled with a rotatable camera on the front and a static camera by the side of buttons.

The new image renders showcases the beautiful smartwatch design from both the front and the rear side. Dual buttons and round dial are prominently visible via the new design renders. However, we can see the air pressure sensor too along with the heart rate sensor present at the bottom side of the smartwatch.

Kospet Prime was launched last year with 1.6-inch HD display, 3GB RAM, 32GB storage, dual-camera support and 4G connectivity. We expect its successor to feature 5G support, but it is highly unlikely at the moment.
