CEO: Huawei would’ve surpassed Samsung in 2019 if not for the U.S. Ban

Huawei is one of the world’s most recognized electronics brands with gadgets ranges varying from everyday household products to smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Currently, the company is the world’s second-largest smartphone maker. However, being No. 2 isn’t enough for the company as Huawei’s CEO Yu Chendong said in an post-launch conference interview that the company was well on its way to become the world’s number one in 2019 if not for the U.S. Ban.

Huawei

Earlier this year, the Chinese tech giant had its foreign operations crippled as the company was placed on the Entity List by the U.S. Commerce Department. This essentially blacklisted Huawei and banned American based companies like Google to have trade or business relations with the company. After being cut off from Google, the company lost Android OS (the primary OS found in its devices) and even its ARM-based chipsets that powered its devices.

Just prior to the ban, Huawei had managed to take the number two spot away from Apple as the largest smartphone brand in the world. So it is not farfetched to assume that Huawei had a real chance of snatching the top spot from Samsung as well.

According to Richard, Huawei would’ve been the world’s number one brand if not for the ban this year itself. Furthermore, he said that people falsely assume that the brand is popular due to China and the Chinese people being patriotic; and went on to further back this statement with Huawei M6 tablet which reportedly sold over 2 million units worldwide. The senior executive stated that the most important reason for achieving such results is user satisfaction and not patriotism.

Going Forward, Huawei is seemingly confident about its future. Its indigenously built HarmonyOS or HongMengOS is expected to arrive in 2020 whilst the company plans on expanding further in the European regions.

Huawei shipped over 7 Million Mate 30 series units in 60 days, registers 75% YoY growth

Huawei’s U.S. ban might have hampered its growth to some extent, however, the company still seems to be doing pretty well. At the Huawei MatePad Pro & MateBook D launch conference earlier today in China, Huawei’s Richard Yu revealed some interesting statistics about its recent models.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro featured 02

Huawei has shipped more than 7 million units of the Mate 30 series globally in the past 60 days. Considering how Mate 30 is still not available in most global markets, this is a pretty big deal. What’s more, this also marks a staggering 75% YoY increase in shipments for the Mate series. It’s very likely that a majority of the units were shipped within China.

Richard Yu also revealed that its Huawei Watch GT 2 is also doing well. The company managed to sell over 1 million GT2 watches in the past 45 days. Huawei reached this figure a solid 3 months ahead of last year’s Watch GT model. He also added that Huawei is now the largest watch manufacturer in China.

Huawei is also China largest tablet manufacturer in terms of market share right now, leading over Apple by a considerable margin. The company expects to sell around 2 million units of the Huawei MediaPad M6 by the end of 2019. And with the MatePad Pro, Huawei should further strengthen its position in China’s tablet market in the coming months.

The Huawei MatePad Pro comes with a large 10.8-inch punch-hole display, with Kirin 990 processor, a huge battery with 15W wireless charging as well as reverse wireless charging and a smart stylus with 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity. There’s a 5G version of the tablet coming in early 2020 as well.

Huawei’s smartphone sales in Europe remain flat YoY in Q3 2019, reveals Canalys report

The latest Canalys report lends an overview of smartphone sales and the overall market share of global manufacturers in Europe. According to the report, Europe has recorded maximum sales volume in the third quarter of 2019, with shipments growing at an average rate of 8% year-on-year. It is interesting to note that Huawei comes in second place, right after Samsung, despite its failure to attain Google’s Google Mobile Service (GMS) certification.

Ever since the US trade ban, Huawei has been unable to get a GMS license for its Mate 30 series, hampering sales in the global market. Despite the supposed handicap, Huawei’s smartphone sales volume has rebounded by nearly 36.5% to 11.6 million units since the second quarter of 2019. Huawei sold 11.7 million units back in Q3 2018, and the difference is negligible.

huawei-logo-featured

According to the Canalys report, the surge came in primarily from Eastern and Central Europe, which recorded 26% growth as compared to the same period last year. Sales in Western Europe, however, declined by 17%. Samsung made the best possible use of this opportunity. While the difference in sales volume between the South Korean and Chinese tech giants were 3.1 million units in Q3 2018, the gap widened to 7.1 million units during the same period this year. Samsung recorded an annual growth of 26%, increasing its total market share to 35.7%.

Apple came in third recording a sales decline of 4% from Q3 2018, with a total of 9.8 million units. Xiaomi takes the fourth spot with significant growth of 73% year-on-year, with 5.5 million units being sold in Q3 2019, increasing its market share to 10.5%. Xiaomi’s growth is the direct result of the company’s aggressive expansion strategy in the region since last year. HMD Global takes fifth place by selling nearly 900k units, recording a market share of 1.8%. HMD’s sales declined by 21% since Q3 2018 when it sold 1.2 million units, recording a market share of 2.4%.

Canalys Q3 2019

Canalys analyst Mo Jia explains that the situation in Europe is vastly different from the United States of America where the highest sales volume comes from network carriers. In Europe, however, the sales volume is evenly split between operators and open channels, i.e. showrooms that sell unlocked devices at full price. This is what makes Europe a lucrative business destination for Chinese smartphone manufacturers since the profit margins are higher on mid to high-end devices.

With the fragmented implementation of the 5G spectrum in 2020, numerous OEMs are expected to partner with network providers within Europe in a bid to sell their devices. The European market is expected to witness an invasion of mid to high-range smartphones in 2020.

Huawei M-Pencil Stylus launched with 10 hour battery life & wireless charging

Huawei has just announced its latest entry in the MatePad series, the MatePad Pro. As suggested by the name, it is the latest tablet from the company which will incorporate powerful specs to increase productivity and viability options for the device. And this leads to the introduction of the MatePad Pro’s new stylus, the M-Pencil. It is not a new innovative gadget but definitely one that will make the MatePad more viable for individuals in the creative fields and other professionals.

Huawei MatePad Pro 5G

The tablet market has been a bit stagnated over the past few months with Apple and Samsung being the most popular options so far. Since WWDC 2019, Apple has taken a more standalone experience with its iPad series, so it comes as no surprise that others might have the same idea. Huawei’s MatePad Pro is being built around ‘functionality’ as its essence and in its core lies the M-Pencil stylus. During the conference, multitasking and the increased accessibility was prominently mentioned.

Huawei’s M-Pencil boasts a 10-hour battery life that can be wirelessly charged to full within an hour. The gadget features magnetic absorption and a sensitivity of 4096 which translates to an overall smooth and accurate writing experience. When the MatePad is not in use, simply tapping the screen with the tip of the M-Pencil will fire up the Huawei memo. This allows for a quick method to save or record important or daily aspects of one’s life.

Huawei MatePad Pro

Similar to the Apple Pen, the M-Pencil is also built around unique functionality and accessibility in mind. This was highlighted through the use of various different applications like WeChat app being run in parallel view via the UIKit to showcase the multi-window capabilities of the device. The MatePad Pro runs the latest EMUI 10 software and is powered by the Kirin 990 SoC paired with 6/8GB of RAM and 128/256GB of internal storage. The tablet will ship in Wi-Fi only and LTE versions as well. The MatePad Pro could very well be a viable alternative to Apple.

Huawei unveils Sound X Smart Speaker co-developed with Devialet

At today’s launch event, Huawei announced a new smart speaker called the Sound X. The new audio product was co-developed with Devialet, a French-audio company.

Huawei Sound X featured

Sound X Design

The Sound X has a cylindrical design which is the best if you are aiming for 360° surround sound. It has a two-tone finish – glazed upper half and a mesh bottom. There is a cut-out on the body of the speaker for the subwoofer.

The top is where the capacitive controls are and there is a cool rainbow light effect when the speaker is on or the AI voice assistant is active.

Features

The Huawei Sound X Smart Speaker has two 3.5” subwoofers (60W in total) and uses SAM bass enhancement technology. Huawei says this is the first smart speaker with a Hi-Res certification. The bass can dive to an ultralow frequency of 40Hz, allowing you to feel the bass effect with your entire body.

The speaker has a sound intensity of 93 decibels. Even at such a high volume, sounds are not distorted and this is because the speaker uses Devialet’s Push-Push acoustic design. The Push-Push design has two symmetrical woofers installed in a confined space and cancels out noise generated at a high volume by using the back-wave thrust generated by each woofer.

Sound X Smart Speaker

There are six evenly distributed 1.5” 8W mid-range speakers alongside the subwoofers and they are tuned using Huawei’s Histen sound algorithm. The Sound X also has spatial awareness, so it adjusts sound output depending on where it is placed. There are six microphones placed around the speaker that can pick up your voice from up to 5 meters away. The combination of the 1.5GHz MediaTek MT8518 quad-core processor and anti-interference signal processing technology ensures that your commands are picked up even in a noisy environment.

Playing music from your phone is super easy. The speaker has NFC and if your phone also has NFC, all you have to do is touch it against the NFC icon on the speaker. The Sound X smart speaker can also be paired with another unit for a dual-speaker stereo mode. All you have to do is double-tap the multifunction button to quickly enter into stereo mode.

Dual-Speaker Stereo Mode

Of course, this is a smart speaker, so it is only right that you can use it to control compatible smart home products. Huawei’s HiLink technology works with products from Midea, Gree, TCL, Haier, Skyworth, Bosch, Siemens and more.

The Sound X weighs 3.5 kilograms, has a diameter of 165 millimeters and stands at 203 millimeters tall. It has 512MB of RAM and 8GB of storage. It supports dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, and has a power rating of 24V 2.7A.

Price and Availability

The Sound X is priced at ¥1999 (~$284) for a single unit while the stereo set is priced at ¥3888 (~$553). It available in a single color variant called Starry Night. Pre-orders begin tomorrow at 18:08 local time and it will go on sale on December 5. The stereo set will be available at the end of December.

Samsung Galaxy S11 Specifications (Rumored)

Xiaomi Mi 10: What to expect?

Until the launch of the Mi Mix series a couple of years back, Xiaomi only launches a flagship Mi model each year. However, this year we have seen a number of offshoots of the Mi 9 flagship such as the Mi 9 Pro, and Mi 9T Pro. Attention is now gradually shifting to next year’s Mi flagship model which is expected to adopt the moniker Xiaomi Mi 10. Some expected details of the flagship Mi 10 have now appeared online and we serve you first here on Gizmochina.

Samsung
The Xiaomi Mi 10 will use a similar punch-hole design as the Galaxy S10

Xiaomi recently disclosed that it plans to launch up to ten 5G smartphones next year. Obviously, the Mi 10 will be among the flagship models with top-level configuration including ae 5G modem. Here are some of what we know so far about the upcoming flagship.

The Mi 10 is expected to launch around March next year and is said to adopt a curved OLED display design. The display will also have the 120Hz refresh rate which would deliver smooth gaming experience to its users. The flagship model is also touted to come with a punch-hole design for the selfie camera with a diameter that may be less than 2mm. The Vivo S5 was recently launched as the first non-Samsung model to have a punch-hole OLED screen.

At the rear aspect, the Xiaomi Mi 10 is likely to retain the Yuba bikes-styled Quad camera setup with all four sensors lining up behind each other in a vertical direction. There are equally rumours of a 108MP main camera sensor among the array.

Furthermore, the Mi 10 will no doubt be powered by Qualcomm’s next-gen Snapdragon 865 chipset and would have a UFS 3.0 flash memory. The chipset would have a 5G modem onboard with support for NSA/SA networks. The device is also expected to have support for 40W wireless fast charging which Xiaomi is reportedly already testing or may even come with 50W wireless charging support. At the moment, the highest wireless charger rating from Xiaomi is 30W. We may also see Xiaomi’s 100W Super Charge Turbo wired charger ship with the device. The fast charger was tipped to arrive in Xiaomi phones next year so the Mi 10 may be the first.

Another rumour making the rounds is that the Mi 10 series would include the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro. This isn’t new as the present Mi 9 flagship launched earlier this year had a Mi 9 Pro model. There is no word yet as to the distinguishing features between both variants.

Huawei Mate X has its Second Hand Units Sold for Twice the Retail Price

Every year, the smartphone industry innovates in a notable manner that leads to popular trends being created. The best example for 2019 would be the in-display fingerprint scanner and the foldable displays. Samsung was one of the first to the race with its infamous Samsung Galaxy Fold that had brought the future near but with its own shortcomings. Similarly, Huawei joined the foldable party with the launch of the Mate X. However, unlike the Galaxy Fold, the Mate X seems to be in pretty short supply. Huawei’s foldable units are reportedly being sold second hand for twice the price owing to limited supplies.

According to a past report, Huawei’s Mate X had sold out within minutes after officially going on sale (being sold for 16,999 Yuan or roughly $2,417). This points to the fact that the device is already a success with the company’s home market. However, the company is still behind shipment as it is struggling to supply the increasing demand. As of today, the Mate X has been completely sold out three times since its official launch.

Owing to this explosive popularity, a few owners of the Mate X have decided to resell their devices for hefty prices. In certain cases, the Mate X was seen being sold for twice the original price. The second-hand trading platforms are being flooded with bids as high as 39,000 or even about 50,000 Yuan. Considering the actual price is 16,999 Yuan, it translates to two or even three times the resale value of a device. In other words, a massive profit margin is being made as the device is being circulated online through unofficial channels.

huawei mate x 5g

The Chinese tech giant has hit all the right notes with its customers with the Huawei Mate X. Unfortunately, the second-hand trend might lead to some issues regarding future sales or even fake units being used to trick buyers. Richard Yu: Huawei will not enter the field of home appliances

Huawei consumer business CEO Richard Yu said at the MatePad Pro launch conference today that the company has no interest in entering the home appliance field in the future. According to him, the company wants to focus predominantly on mobile phones, smart audio products, computer product and tablets, as well as other smart consumer products such as smart wear, smart bracelets and smart watches.

This isn’t the first time that we’ve seen Richard Yu express absolutely no interest in home appliances. During the China Household Appliances and Consumer Electronics Expo in Shanghai on March 14th, the company took a deep dive into the smart home products market with their smart TVs, as well as applying a bigger focus towards AI development.

During that Expo, Richard Yu claimed that the company “has a selfishness in doing IoT. Our goal is to improve the stickiness of smart terminal users. Therefore, Huawei IoT and Huawei mobile phones are a whole and inseparable. In the future, your home hardware can be controlled by Huawei mobile phones.”

This is in stark contrast to their competitors, especially Xiaomi who have invested heavily into all sorts of home appliances that connect to their Mi Home infrastructure. According to Richard Yu, the company will never make smart hardware for home appliances, and will only provide consumers with a seamless experiences on pre-existing products.

Xiaomi launches Donlim Multi-function Breakfast Machine

Earlier today, Xiaomi launched their latest device, something we haven’t really seen from the company before. The new Multi-function Breakfast Machine comes from Xiaomi partner Donlim, and has five cooking methods built into the device. It’s an extremely interesting take on portable kitchens, and could be useful in a lot of ways.

The Multi-function Breakfast Machine comes with a bread toaster and electric stove. The toaster obviously toasts toast, but the electric stove allows you to steam, stir-fry, boil and make essentially anything you can make on a normal stove. Between these two cooking methods, you can produce basically any breakfast imaginable pretty quickly.

That’s not all of course. Purchasing the Donlim means you get the full suite of breakfast appliances. There’s a built-in 1.2L large capacity pot, which is also equipped with a 304 stainless steel steame. Then there’s also a Teflon non-stick coated frying pan for frying everything you need. There’s a also a pull tray for removing bread chips from the toaster.

The Donlim Multi-function Breakfast Machine goes on sale for 359 yuan, which puts it at about $52. This isn’t all that bad considering all the extras that come with the cooker, and we’d like to see the idea get expanded further in the future with more fixments added to the product.
