Honor 20 and iQOO Neo get Golden Crane and Four Calves limited editions respectively

The Honor 20 series recently got two new color variants. The Honor 20 itself now comes in Phantom Blue while the Honor 20 Pro is now available in a new color that translates into “Icelandic Illusion”. Alongside these two new color variants, the Honor 20 is getting a limited edition called Golden Crane that comes in an elaborate gift box.

Honor 20 Golden Crane Edition

The Red-crowned Crane is the national bird of China and this limited edition Honor 20 shows that. The phone comes in a blue box with a similar color to the Mi MIX 3 Forbidden City/Palace Museum edition. However, unlike the Mi MIX 3 Forbidden City edition, the Honor 20 inside the box isn’t customized. It is the regular Sapphire Blue variant with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

Inside the gift box are a notebook, a phone case, a power bank, a pen, and a golden crane bookmarker. The notebook, case, and power bank come in the same blue color with the golden crane embossment as the box.

This limited edition is priced at ¥2699 (~$392) and is available for pre-order on Jingdong.com. It will go on sale on the 8th of August.

iQOO Neo Four Calves Edition

Honor isn’t the only one with a limited edition phone. The iQOO Neo also has a limited edition that adopts the same design as the Honor 20 Golden Crane edition. Called the iQOO Neo Four Calves edition, it comes in a blue box too with a customized power bank, phone case, bull-head phone stand, and fridge magnet. There is also a carbon black iQOO Neo with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 has as its major highlight a pop-up selfie camera and a triple rear camera setup. The device equally packs an expansive 6.59-inch LCD display with tiny bezels on all sides due to the absence of a stationary front camera. The pop-up camera design also ensures the device doesn’t have the notch which most of us hate so much.Huawei Y9 Prime 2019

At the rear, you’ll find a triple camera setup aligned vertically at the top left corner. Two of the sensors are housed in one module while the third sensor sits on its own module. Huawei’s EMUI 9.1 Stable version now set to hit the first batch of 10 models

Huawei first announced its latest EMUI 9.1 update back in April. Since then, a total of 27 Huawei models have received the public beta update of the features-packed ROM, with the latest batch getting the update a couple of days back. With the rate at which updates were rolling out, we suspected it was just a matter of days before the stable ROM gets released. Indeed, Huawei is now set to push EMUI 9.1 Stable version to 10 models. The models consist of seven Huawei models and three Honor phones.EMUI 9.1

The affected models include; Huawei Mate 10, Huawei Mate 10 Pro, Huawei Mate 10 Porsche Design, Huawei Mate RS Porsche Design, Huawei P20, Huawei P20 Pro, Huawei nova 3, Honor 10, Honor V10, and Honor Play. The update is expected to be for the China version since the announcement comes from Weibo. We expect Huawei to push the update for the global version in no distant time.

Huawei’s EMUI 9.1 is based on Android 9.0 Pie and adopts a minimalist design, thanks to Android 9.0’s deep customization optimization. This version also brings improvements in wallpapers, themes and icons. There are also several improvements to the overall user apps which makes it easier to use the UI. There are also improvements in artificial intelligence (AI) features covering various aspects such as health, office, entertainment, travel and more.

EDITOR’S PICK: Motorola One Macro is another Android One phone from Motorola

EMUI 9.1 also comes with GPU Turbo 3.0 an upgrade to the GPU Turbo graphics acceleration technology. The feature adds support for 51 domestic games in addition to the already supported 60 domestic games, bringing a low-power full-frame gaming experience. Furthermore, EMUI 9.1 brings improvements to Huawei’s voice assistant as well as smart dual 4G SIM card switching, automatically switching SIM cards based on the one with the best internet coverage. It also comes with EROFS (Extendable Read-Only File System) that should increase read speed by 20% and save about 2 GB of system storage.

Xiaomi’s latest patent is a Mi MIX 3 with quad rear cameras (Moto Style)

The Mi MIX 3 is one of the most impressive devices launched by Xiaomi last year. Its magnetic slider design, build quality and features all got positive comments from reviewers. While the slider-design may have taken a back seat this year, it seems Xiaomi isn’t done with it yet. A new patent has surfaced that shows the slider design isn’t yet dead, at least for Xiaomi.

Xiaomi Slider Phone Patent b

The patent which was first reported by TigerMobiles was filed at the Chinese National Intellectual Property Agency (CNIPA) and it shows a device similar to the Mi MIX 3. The front is practically all screen and when you slide the device down, you have dual front-facing cameras.

Where it differs greatly from the Mi MIX 3 is on the rear. Rather than dual cameras positioned on the left side of the phone, the phone doubles the sensors to 4. It doesn’t stop there but adopts the circular camera housing we have come to associate with Motorola phones. There is also no fingerprint scanner which most likely means there is one under the display. The patent also shows the device keeps the dedicated AI assistant button of the Mi MIX 3.

Xiaomi Slider Phone Patent

It is too early to say if this device will see the light of day or it is just Xiaomi trying to build its patent box. But I, personally, wouldn’t mind seeing another slider phone.

Another patent filed by Xiaomi ditches the slider design for a notch but this is a different type. Rather than a U-shaped notch or waterdrop notch, this is a long but narrow notch much like an indentation caused by applying slight pressure. Inside this new-style notch are two cameras.

Xiaomi new notch patent

On the rear, the device has three cameras arranged vertically on the left along with an LED flash. There is no visible fingerprint scanner here too, so we will assume it is under the display.

Huawei still bullish, CEO predicts 30% gain in global handset shipments in 2019 despite US blacklist

Huawei has no doubt been the most talked-about tech company in recent times. This is due to the company’s consistent rise but mainly as a result of the US blacklist which was announced in May this year. Before the US clampdown, Huawei was already ahead of Apple in terms of phone shipments and was projected to surpass Samsung in market shares in 2020. Huawei may not have its sight in meeting Samsung’s shipments but founder and CEO, Ren Zhengfei is still confident the company will achieve impressive sales this year.

In an interview with Yahoo Finance, Ren Zhengfei predicted that the tech giant will ship 30% more smartphones globally this year than it did last year, regardless of the blacklist. He hinted that he expects both Huawei and Honor to ship an estimated 270 million handsets globally in 2019. Recall that Huawei was able to ship a total of 206 million smartphones globally last year, according to estimates released by IDC. The figure placed Huawei in the third position behind Samsung and Apple.

EDITOR’S PICK: Redmi teases the World’s First 64MP Smartphone with a Camera Sample

To achieve this predicted shipping estimates, Huawei will be looking to rely on strong sales in China as well as in Europe where Donald Trump’s clampdown hasn’t been effective against Huawei’s smartphone sales. Recent research by Kantar estimated that both the Huawei and Honor brands presently account for 46.1 per cent of the Chinese market in the second quarter. The research firm’s market share figure for Huawei was based on a survey of 27,000 respondents in China in both major and lesser-developed cities.

Huawei had indicated that it crossed 100 million shipments by the end of May. That is before the ban went into effect but since then, Huawei still reported year-on-year growth in its major European markets, UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, in the April-June quarter. However, overall sales in the five countries declined by 1.9 per cent on a quarter-on-quarter basis as the negative publicity by the US begins to have an effect on some consumer’s confidence in the brand.

Huawei’s US arm Futurewei announces worker layoffs; 70% of workforce will reportedly go

A recent report alleged that Huawei was planning to trim down its workforce in the US. Huawei operates in the US under its subsidiary known as Futurewei. Futurewei is Huawei’s research arm and was in the news recently when it made moves to extricate itself from Huawei’s brand identity. The company has now reportedly announced worker layoffs on Monday, according to two Futurewei employees.huawei logo

This sad development is coming barely two months after the U.S. government put Huawei on a trade blacklist, making it illegal for its U.S. subsidiary to transfer sensitive technologies to its parent. The blacklist also restricts Huawei from purchasing products from U.S. technology companies. One of the employees even disclosed that work came to a standstill since May 17 when the company was blacklisted. In his words; “On the 17th of May, Huawei asked everyone at Futurewei to upload everything to the Huawei cloud, right before the ban took effect….After that basically, Futurewei has stopped doing any work – almost stopped everything.”

The layoff will see 70% of the 850 workers under Futurewei’s payroll let go, an employee revealed. The employee also indicated that the layoff list had been sent from Huawei’s headquarters in China. Apart from workers layoffs, Huawei is also terminating any open source projects, projects related to near-term Huawei products, and any research and development in critical technology.

Futurewei runs several research labs in the US and partners several US universities in research and development. Futurewei has offices in Silicon Valley and the greater Seattle, Chicago and Dallas areas. Futurewei has filed more than 2,100 patents in such areas as telecommunications, 5G cellular networks, and video and camera technologies, according to data from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Huawei is yet to release an official statement about this latest development.

Huawei accused of helping North Korea build wireless network and unlawfully collecting users data in Czech Republic

Huawei has been able to withstand the US government’s clampdown on its operations and call for a boycott of its products by other countries, mainly because there is hardly any evidence to show the company is involved in wrongdoing. That may change soon as fresh bombshell allegations have emerged that Huawei may have been dealing with North Korea illegally.  The allegation also suggests Huawei may have been collecting users data in the Czech Republic unlawfully. huawei

The two allegations were propagated by US and Czech media organisations recently. Perhaps the most damning is the allegation that Huawei had “secretly heped” North Korea build and maintain its commercial wireless network. The report carried by The Washington Post quotes sources and documents obtained from a former Huawei employee.

According to the report, Huawei partnered with Panda International Information Technology, a Chinese state-owned firm, on a number of projects spanning at least eight years. North Korea has been under extensive international sanctions over its nuclear weapons programme and human rights abuses. Huawei’s alleged dealings raises questions if the company had used American technology in its components, which is a violation of US export controls.

Huawei has denied having any business presence in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. In a statement responding to the Washington Post article, the company stated; “Huawei is fully committed to complying with all applicable laws and regulations in the countries and regions where we operate, including all export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US and EU.”

EDITOR’S PICK: Honor Band 5 features a Blood Oxygen Level Sensor at just $28

While the storm about North Korea was still raging, a second report by Agence France-Presse claims an investigation conducted by Czech public radio found that the Czech unit of Huawei “secretly collected personal data of customers, officials and business partners”.
Czech public radio cited two former Huawei managers who spoke on condition of anonymity to have hinted that Huawei required them to enter the data into computer systems that “is only managed by Huawei headquarters in China”, according to AFP. The personal information gathered included number of children, hobbies and the financial situation of designated subjects, the report added.

In response to Czech radio network’s report, Huawei said in a statement that it was in compliance with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation rules, which are designed to protect the privacy of EU citizens. “Huawei has never worked with any intelligence gathering operations whether from the Chinese embassy or any other organisation,” it said. “The way Huawei processes user data in the Czech Republic is in full compliance with all applicable Czech and EU laws.”

Honor Band 5 features a Blood Oxygen Level Sensor at just $28

Honor had an official event in China earlier today where it announced the new Honor 9X series. Alongside the new models, the company also unveiled its brand new wearable, the Honor Band 5, which directly takes on Xiaomi’s Mi Band 4. While the new Honor band goes neck to neck with the Mi Band 4 in terms of features, it has an edge thanks to its blood oxygen level sensor.

Honor Band 5 02

The Honor Band 5 comes with a 0.95-inch AMOLED color display with 282 PPI and 2.5D glass on top. The band features a number of new dials to match the different needs of the user. What’s really the highlight of the new smart band is the blood oxygen level sensor. It can measure your blood SpO2 levels, indicating the level of oxygen in your blood. This is a game-changing feature for a smart band that costs less than $30, clearly giving it an edge over Xiaomi’s Mi Band 4.

Other features are standard, including a 24 x 7 heart rate monitoring sensor, sleep monitor with the ability to detect six different types of sleeping problems, and 10 different sports modes that include indoor and outdoor running, cycling, swimming, and a few other cardio activities. Just like the Mi Band 4, the Honor band is waterproof up to 50 meters, so you can wear the wearable while swimming to track your calories.

The Honor Band 5 has two versions, a standard one and an NFC-enabled one. Features usually found on other smart bands like remote camera capture, smart reminders, find your phone, etc are also available on the wearable. The smart band can keep these features running for a good 14 days. That’s less than what Mi Band 4 offers but with a SpO2 sensor on board, it feels like decent battery life.

The Honor Band 5 starts at 189 Yuan ($28) for the standard version and goes up to 219 Yuan ($31) for the NFC version. The standard version will be up for sale in China later today while the NFC version goes on sale on July 29 on Vmall and other online retailers. The band will be made available in three colors, black, blue, and light pink.
