OnePlus 7 Pro gets an early camera review, has 3x optical zoom

The OnePlus 7 launch is still two weeks away but the details don’t stop pouring in. OnePlus will launch a pro version which will be the actual challenger of phones like the Galaxy S10 and the Huawei P30 Pro. Display Mate already revealed the OnePlus 7 Pro’s display is the highest rated for a mobile device. Now a early review reveals the phone also packs impressive cameras.

Last week, OnePlus confirmed in a tweet that the OnePlus 7 Pro will have three rear cameras. There is the 48MP primary camera paired with an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto lens and a 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide angle lens.

The guys at Wired were able to get hands-on access with a pre-production unit and they’ve got nice things to say about the upcoming flagship.

OnePlus 7 Pro 3x Zoom camera sample

One of the biggest features the OnePlus 7 Pro’s camera setup has is 3x zoom. This is real zoom and not the gimmick it tried pulling with the OnePlus 5. This is zoom with the high details and low noise we expect from such a feature.

It doesn’t match up to that of the Huawei P30 Pro and OnePlus knows that. The aim is to have a shot at the big guys and it does it well.

“I think we have a shot at competing with the first tier phones. I don’t think we can beat them, but the imaging world is always subjective.” – OnePlus imaging director Simon Liu.

The OnePlus 7 Pro also has 10x digital zoom and videos recorded with the 3x zoom have some degree of stabilization says Wired. There are other improvements too. The camera is faster, Auto HDR is amazing – allowing you to take pictures directly facing the sun and not get unusable photos. It’s night mode is also better than that of the OnePlus 6T and just a teeny bit slower than regular mode. There are no AI features screaming at you. OnePlus says it happens behind the scene.

HDR has been improved on the OnePlus 7 Pro

“The portrait mode is more natural and the bokeh effect is closer to what you’d get from a professional lens” says Simon Liu.

Wired concludes the review by saying the camera performance of the OnePlus 7 Pro is indeed better than that of all its predecessors. While it doesn’t beat the Huawei P30 Pro and the Galaxy S10 5G, it does closes the gap between them.

Redmi flagship phone render based on leaks appear to reveal design

Earlier today, Redmi had released the first teaser of the upcoming Redmi flagship phone. The teaser had revealed that it would be arriving with a notch-less display and a pop-up selfie camera. A fan-made render of the smartphone based on the leaks surrounding it is now doing rounds on Weibo.

The below render shows that the Redmi flagship phone is equipped with a notch-less display that is surrounded by super-slim bezels. The bottom bezel of the device is slightly thick compared to other bezels. The top edge of the phone has a pop-up selfie camera. The official teaser had revealed that its elevating camera module placed towards the left of the top edge of the device. Hence, the center positioning of the selfie camera system on the render seems to be incorrect.

The vertical triple camera setup is placed on the top-left corner of the device. An LED flash is placed below it. The rear shell of the phone seems to be made out of glass that seems to be curved towards the edges. There is no fingerprint reader on the backside of the phone. Hence, the phone seems to be equipped with an in-display fingerprint reader.

There are contradictory rumors about the upcoming Redmi phone with pop-up selfie camera. While the rumor mill is speculating that it could be the Snapdragon 855 powered phone, there are some reports that it could be a Snapdragon 730 fueled phone.

Rumors have revealed that the SD855 Redmi phone will be arriving with a 6.39-inch AMOLED display, a 48-megapixel + 8-megapixel + 13-megapixel triple camera setup, a front-facing camera of 32-megapixel, up to 8 GB of RAM, inbuilt storage of 128 GB, NFC and 3.5mm audio jack. The smartphone will be offering a high screen-to-body ratio, impressive camera experience and it will carry an affordable price tag.

There is very less information available on SD730 Redmi phone. A recent leak had revealed that it could be equipped with 48-megapixel + 8-megapixel + 13-megapixel triple camera, a 4,000mAh battery and Snapdragon 730.

OnePlus 7 Pro real machine photographed in the hands of OnePlus’ CEO

The picture shows the device still encased in a protective shell meant to shield the device from the prying eyes of reporters than from getting damaged.OnePlus 7 Pro

As a result of the protective casing, we are unable to get the full view of the device. However, the size of the camera cutout seems to confirm that the device will have more than two sensors at the rear. Earlier leaks point to a triple camera setup at the rear for the OP7 Pro. The device is also said to pack a pop-up selfie shooter and OnLeaks has even provided us with renders of the device based on leaked details.OnePlus 7 Pro

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun loses a 5 year bet with Gree Chairwoman for 1 Billion Yuan ($150M)

Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun seems to have lost a bet with Gree Electric Appliances Inc. Chairwoman, Dong Mingzhu. This comes after Gree reported 2018’s total revenue at 198 billion yuan yesterday. The bet, made by Lei Jun on national television, back in December 2013, said that Xiaomi’s revenues would surpass Gree in the next five years. However, Xiaomi’s revenue for the same period was just 174.915 billion yuan, a good 20 billion yuan less than Gree’s figure.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun

While we still don’t know whether Lei Jun would keep his side of the bet, if he decides to do so, it would cost him 1 billion yuan, and that’s nearly $150 million. At the time of making this bet, it was like David challenging Goliath, with Gree beating Xiaomi in every single department, right from revenue, factories, to even employees. But Lei Jun was betting on the company’s solid online sales model, which has helped the company become one of the top smartphone companies in the world.

It’s worth mentioning that Lei Jun’s initial bet was for just 1 yuan. However, Gree’s Chairwoman, Dong Mingzhu, raised that bet to 1 billion yuan.

Xiaomi or Lei Jun is yet to comment on this matter.

Nubia Red Magic 3 vs Xiaomi Black Shark 2 vs Razer Phone 2: Specs Comparison

Nubia just released its 2019 gaming phone with ground-breaking features: the Red Magic 3. They come with totally different aesthetics, but all of them have stunning performances: which is the best one and which one is currently worth buying? Let’s see it together.

Design

The design is a very subjective matter when it comes to gaming phones. There are people who prefer aggressive and original aesthetics such as Nubia Red Magic 3 and Xiaomi Black Shark 2 with their LED strips, while others want a more standard and elegant design such as Razer Phone 2. If we exclude the subjective elements, there are three things making the difference here: build quality, keys, and options to connect accessories. On the Nubia Red Magic 3, you get more physical keys you can use in-game, as well as rear pins to connect additional accessories. On the other hand, Xiaomi Black Shark 2 has a pressure sensitive display which lets you map the buttons to the sides of the screen. Razer Phone 2 does not offer these features, but it is water resistant and it has an oleophobic coating for the display. Nubia Red Magic 3 seems a bit more comfortable for gamers.

Display

The most stunning display for gamers is the one found on the Razer Phone 2, despite it is not an AMOLED panel. Indeed, it comes with the highest refresh rate (120 Hz) that is very useful in-game, as well as the highest resolution (QHD) for a higher level of detail, wide color gamut and higher brightness.

Specs & Software

Razer Phone 2 loses this comparison because it has a less impressive chipset: we are talking about the old-gen Snapdragon 845, while Nubia Red Magic 3 and Xiaomi Black Shark 2 are equipped with the new Snapdragon 855 chipset. In order to establish which one performs better between Xiaomi Black Shark 2 and Nubia Red Magic 3, we will have to see how the air cooling of the Nubia Magic 3 behaves, but we have higher expectations for the Red Magic.

Camera

Despite coming with flagship-class performances, these devices are not exactly the best camera phones, but they are still good at taking photos. Nubia Red Magic 3 has just a single camera, but it is very interesting due to its 48 MP resolution and the capability to record 8K videos and 1920 fps slow motion videos. On the other hand, Razer Phone 2 comes with OIS and 2x optical zoom, better features for photos. Even Xiaomi Black Shark 2 is pretty nice with its 48 MP main sensor supported by a 12 MP telephoto lens for 2x optical zoom.

Battery

With its huge 5000 mAh battery, the Nubia Red Magic 3 should be able to beat the competition in a lot of scenarios. We say should because we do not know how much energy the rotating fan working at 14K rpm will consume. So, just like the cameras, we have to test the battery life of the Nubia Red Magic 3 in order to give a definitive opinion.

Price

The price is the weakest point of the Razer Phone 2 as it was launched with a price tag of €850/$950. Xiaomi Black Shark 2 and Nubia Red Magic 3 debuted in China for just €450/$500 and €385/$430 respectively. At the end of the day, if we base on the specs on the paper, due to its big battery, its physical keys, the rear pins, and the 90 Hz refresh rate, Nubia Red Magic 3 looks like the device with the highest value for money.

Xiaomi takes down a tweet with a bizarre low-budget ad for Mi 9 SE

Marking smartphones is as important as making good smartphones. However, marking isn’t as easy job, especially you are in a market like smartphones which is heavily crowded. To stand out from the crowd, the companies try to make witty remarks and ads.

Xiaomi tried to do the same for the marketing of its Mi 9 SE smartphone by posting a video on Twitter. However, instead of getting people interested in the smartphone, the move backfired because of the content. Realizing this, the company soon took down the ad.

Xiaomi Mi 9 SE Ad Tweet

The video shows a couple in bed and the man is using his smartphone. He is shown responding to late-night, flirty messages from another woman on Facebook Messenger. He subsequently gets caught. In a text accompanying the video, the company implies that he’d have gotten away with this if he’d been using a Mi 9 SE.

This was posted by the company’s Xiaomi Malaysia Twitter account and as said, the advertisement has now been deleted by the company. This isn’t the first time that the company’s attempt has backfired.

Last year, after launching the Mi A1 Android One smartphone, Xiaomi ran a poll on Twitter asking its followers whether they preferred MIUI or Android One. But due to a result deemed unsatisfactory by Xiaomi, the tweet was removed by the company.

Apple hired Intel’s 5G mobile technology head before resolving conflict with Qualcomm

Recently, there have been talks that the Cupertino giant was looking for partners to bring 5G compatibility to the upcoming iPhone models. Further, Apple had initiated talks to purchase Intel’s modem chip business, cited a report. After being in the negotiations with 5G modem manufacturers like Intel and Qualcomm, Apple finally joined hands with San Diego based – Qualcomm last week.

Both the companies – Apple and Qualcomm were in a tussle from the past couple of years. But surprisingly, they ended the court battle abruptly a week ago. Before the negotiations, Apple was aiming to develop its own chipsets for next year’s iPhone. To speed up the process, Apple even hired Intel’s lead developer for 5G phone modems, Umashankar Thyagarajan, in February. Though “poaching” isn’t a new concept for Apple, it does shed light on Apple’s desire to develop its own chipset in the coming years.

Apple aims to power 2021 iPhone models with its own developed chipsets, despite the six-year licensing deal, and a supply chain agreement with Qualcomm. On the other hand, Intel has entirely scrapped its plans to work on the 5G mobile modems business after Apple abandoned the 5G chip project.

According to internal emails, Thyagarajan’s departure from Intel’s 5G modem business was seen as a significant setback for Intel’s 5G ambitions. It forced the company to reshuffle the whole team but finally ended up on its 5G plans. Intel’s executives Messay Amerga and Abhay Joshi reveal in an internal email that Mr Thyagarajan had “played a key role” in the Intel chip that featured in last year’s iPhones and he had been the project engineer on developing its 5G chip, known as XMM 8160.

Intel was planning to sell off its 5G modem chip business to Apple or some other company, but all ended after Apple-Qualcomm settlement. Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights reveals Intel’s chip business is costing around $1 billion annually, and the value is depreciating with every second without a sale.

Companies like Broadcom, ON Semiconductor Inc., Samsung, or Chinese company Unisoc Communications Inc are some potentials buyers for Intel’s business.
