Samsung has announced the W2019 flagship flip phone through a launch event in China. It has arrived as the successor of the Snapdragon 835 powered W2018 flip phone that was announced in December last year. Compared to the predecessor model, the W2019 has come with some new features such as improved processor, dual rear cameras and side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Samsung W2019 Specifications and Features

The Samsung W2019 flip phone features an external S-AMOLED display of 4.2 inches that carries support for Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The 4.2-inch internal S-AMOLED display of the phone also supports FHD resolution.

The clamshell phone when closed measures 132.9 x 63.4 x 17.3mm and it weighs 257 grams. The rear side of the phone is made out of Corning Gorilla Glass. It comes in two color choices of Rose Gold and Platinum. Opening the flip phone reveals its directional keypad as well as its numeric keypad. The smartphone is equipped with a side-mounted fingerprint reader.

The Snapdragon 845 chipset is present under the hood of the Samsung W2019. The SoC is supported by 6 GB of RAM. It comes in storage choices of 128 GB and 256 GB. The handset is equipped with a dedicated button for accessing Bixby AI assistant.

Huawei recently announced its Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 X smartphones internationally but soon after that it confirmed that the devices won’t be available for purchase officially in the United States.

Now, the company has announced two new wearable devices — Huawei Band 3 Pro and Huawei Band 3e for sale in the US. This comes at a time when the company is facing scrutiny from the US government due to escalating trade war.

The Huawei Band 3 Pro fitness tracker comes with an ergonomically designed metallic body and a silicone rubber wristband. It features a 0.95-inch AMOLED touchscreen display and is 50ATM rated that offers up to 50 meters of water resistance.

The device is packed with a 100mAh battery which is claimed to provide seven hours of usage with GPS tracking turned on. Thanks to the AI and TruSeen 3.0 heart monitoring system, it offers accurate heart rate readings. Other functions include sleep monitoring, swimming tracker, sports tracking and coaching.

Once paired with a smartphone, the wearable device will offer features like notifications for incoming calls and messages, reject calls, Find my Phone, photo time and remote. It can be availed in colors like Obsidian Black, Space Blue and Quicksand Gold.

The Huawei Band 3e is more of an entry-level offering which comes with basic fitness tracking and intelligent notifications. It is fitted with a 0.5-inch PMOLED screen and the smart band is water resistant up to 50 meters, which makes it safe to use in the pool. The device, which comes with sleep monitoring technology. It offers an impressive 14 days of battery life in “typical use.”

Generally, phones tend to become warm while charging, but the issue with Google Pixel 3 is that it overheats to such an extent that it results in its shut down. Pixel 3 users have claimed that the overheating issues can be observed during wired charging as well as wireless charging. However, the issue is more prominent while wireless charging.

The device heats up even more when some sort of action is performed while charging. For instance, carrying out a video call dramatically increase the temperature of the device. However, simpler functions like streaming a video can also cause the Pixel 3 to heat up significantly.

Users who have tried third-party chargers and Google Pixel Stand for charging the Pixel 3 have also claimed to have encountered the same issue. The below image shows that once the temperature of the device rises to a certain point, it shows the “phone is getting warm” message to the user. If the device continues to heat up, the Pixel 3 will automatically shut down to avoid damage. When device gets warmer and warmer while charging, the speed at which it charges also reduces considerably. Vivo has announced the Vivo X21s smartphone in China. It is a new variant of the Vivo X21 smartphone that was unveiled in March this year. The Vivo X21s is fueled by Snapdragon 660 and it features a waterdrop notch screen. Like the X21 phone, the X21s also features an in-screen fingerprint reader.

The Vivo X21s handset that features a 3D glass rear measures 157.1 x 75.08 x 7.9mm and weighs 156 grams. Honor India revealed that during the Diwali sales, the company recorded 300 percent year-on-year growth and sold over a million smartphones. It also said that the company’s fanbase increased by 32 percent.

Further, the company says that its ‘Star Product’ was the Honor 9N during Flipkart’s Big Billion Days while the Honor 8X was the bestseller in the category of devices priced between Rs. 12,000 and Rs. 15,000 during Amazon‘s Great Indian festival. It also revealed that the top five cities for sales were Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune, and Kolkata.

LG patent shows a smartphone design with In-Display Front-Facing camera

Smartphone manufacturers are in a competition to offer a device with minimal bezels or no bezels at all. In a pursuit of that goal, the companies started embracing notched display, which enables manufacturers to offer higher screen-to-body ratio and house the front-facing camera and other sensors inside the notch.

After the trend of offering display with rectangular notch, waterdrop or dewdrop notch, smartphone manufacturers have now started offering devices with slide-out mechanism, where the camera sensors are housed on the slider.

Recently, we came across a new patent from Samsung which revealed that the South Korean giant might be working on a full-screen smartphone with an in-display front-facing camera. Now, a recent patent from LG shows that it is also working on a similar phone design which eliminates the need of notch and bezels.

LG has filed the patent in South Korea and showcases two different design approaches — curved model with full-screen design that has slanting edges and other one called straight model which has the straight screen with rounded edges.

However, the concept seems similar to what we’ve already seen where an oval-shaped cutout houses the front-facing camera module with either one or two camera sensors, along with other sensors. Further, the patent shows that the module can be placed in three locations — top-middle, upper-left corner, and upper-right corner on the front panel.

With such designs, the ultimate aim of the company is to offer nearly 100 percent viewing area with virtually no bezels. It’s good to see LG is still involved in making innovative smartphone products given that the company’s mobile division is struggling.

While the patent suggests a full-screen smartphone with in-display front-facing camera from LG, this does not mean that the patent will actually materialise into a commercial device. Even though the company actually makes such phone, we’ll have to wait a few years before we get our hands on such devices.

Nokia 8.1 launch nearing as it passes NCC in Taiwan and EEC certification in Russia

Nokia is preparing to launch a set of two new devices in the upcoming few days. Both the devices have started appearing on the major certification agencies. Particularly, Nokia 8.1 is listed on NCC in Taiwan, while in Russia it has reached EEC certification agency. It has even appeared on the Geekbench few days ago flaunting its most prominent specs.

The report lists the Nokia 8.1 as a model TA-1119 and as like always, we have not received any additional details than this. Although, it is now clear that Nokia is getting ready to launch the Nokia 8.1 very soon in multiple markets. Moreover, Nokia 8.1 has made an appearance at Eurasian Economic Commision (EEC) in Russia. Over there, it has not appeared alone, a new device, model number TA-1087 has appeared on the website.

Both these devices have not debuted in any market, so the appearance on the certification agency website makes it clear that soon we will see a couple of new devices from Nokia. Even EEC has not unveiled any other detail rather than pouring some light on the model number information.

Apart from the certification, Nokia 8.1 is expected to carry Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC having a base frequency of 1.7 GHz. It is dedicated to giving more battery efficiency as SoC is built on the 10nm process. It will be bundled with 4GB of RAM with speculated 64/128 GB of internal storage options. It will run on the latest and greatest Android 9.0 Pie out of the box. We are expecting an imminent launch of Nokia 8.1 as it has also appeared on Bluetooth SIG a few weeks ago.

Another device bearing model number TA-1087 might be a similar device running on the Android One Platform.

Additionally, Nokia has recently launched Nokia 2.1, Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 5.1 with good specs at a reasonable price. All the devices run on Snapdragon processors.

Kirin 990 7nm SoC rumored to debut in Q1 2019 with Balong 5000 5G modem

In the recent years, Huawei has managed to excel in the mobile chipset industry. The Kirin 980 that was unveiled at IFA 2018 arrived as the world’s 7nm chipset. Currently, it is one of the strongest mobile chipsets. Huawei has already launched couple of phones that are powered by Kirin 980 chipset such as Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20 X and Honor Magic 2. Fresh information reveals that the Chinese manufacturer is already working on the Kirin 990 that will come out to succeed the Kirin 980 chipset. It is tipped to go official as early as Q1 2019.

Industry chain sources claim that the Huawei has already started working on the Kirin 990 SoC. It is speculated to be testing the Kirin 990 SoC with TSMC and is aiming to make it official in Q1 2019. The cost of testing the Kirin 990 chipset is very expensive. Each test requires an investment of around 200 million Yuan.

Like the Kirin 980, the Kirin 990 could be a 7nm chipset. It is likely to debut as the first 5G ready chip from the company since it is expected to arrive with Balong 5000 5G modem. Compared to the Kirin 980, its successor is expected to consume 10 percent less power and its overall performance may increase by 10 percent. There is no information available on the other specs of the Kirin 990 SoC.

The report claims that Huawei may debut the Kirin 990 SoC in Q1 2019. Huawei is known for using its flagship chipset on multiple Huawei and Honor branded phones. The Chinese firm is expected to release more phones driven by the recently announced Kirin 980. Hence, it seems unlikely that the Kirin 990 SoC will go official so soon.

Huawei is yet to confirm on the existence of the Kirin 990. Hence, it is advisable to wait for more reports to learn about the upcoming flagship SoC from Huawei.

There is plenty of news in and around about the launch of Elephone A5. After a formal listing on the official website, Elephone has not made it available anywhere, though it appears the date of availability is nearing. We have received some photos of its back cases which directly speaks the Elephone A5 design language. Even though, Elephone has used same gradient pattern on different cases.

As per the pictures, it appears that the Elephone A5 back cases will come in six different colours. All gradient colours appear to be of pinkish black, blue and dark blue, orange gradient, light blue and pure black. The Elephone designers have spent a lot of time designing the back covers. The gradient colour back cover is giving it a premium look, and the device also looks more crafty.

As you can see in the pictures above, Elephone has designed it with precision, and every portion of the back cover has been detailed with the aura of colours. All the colours are inspired by nature.

Although, Elephone A5 carries an MT6763 Octa-core processor with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage.
