Samsung teases Galaxy A8s with a truly bezel-less screen

At the event in China where it unveiled the Galaxy A9s and the Galaxy A6s today, Samsung teased a brand new phone called the Galaxy A8s. However, it was tight-lipped about the phone’s feature save for a picture which shows the phone with a completely bezel-less display.

Galaxy A8s

Samsung says the Galaxy A8s will be the first to feature a new technology. That new technology is most likely a new display design with practically no bezel. So if it doesn’t have a bezel, where are the sensors and front-facing camera?

According to Ice Universe, the Galaxy A8s will have a hole in its display for the front-facing camera and sensors. It will be quite small, much smaller than the water-drop notch and will be surrounded by the rest of the screen. In a tweet he posted last week, Ice Universe said the design will gain mainstream adoption next year.

The Samsung Galaxy A8s doesn’t have a release date yet and there is still a lot we do not know. However, there is a chance it will launch before next year or at least before the Galaxy S10 series.

Xiaomi leads smartphone shipments in India in Q3 2018: Counterpoint

According to the report from Counterpoint Research, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has beat its rival Samsung to be the leading smartphone brand with most shipments in the Indian market in the third quarter of this year.

The smartphone shipments in India in Q3 witnessed a 24 percent quarter-on-quarter growth and 5 percent year-on-year growth. The numbers indicate that the growth in the Indian market has even surpassed those of US in the same quarter.

Xiaomi Leads Indian Smartphone Market Q3 2018

The record shipments came at a time when the rupee hit record low against the US dollar, impacting product planning and supply chains. Also, the number of users in India exceeded 400 million, making it the second largest smartphone market in the world after China.

The report suggests that while the segment started moderately but grew because of the festive season sales. It further adds that OnePlus managed to retain its top position in the premium segment — phones costing more than Rs. 30,000 (approximately $410) — during Q3 2018.

As per the data from Counterpoint Research, Xiaomi’s overall market share during Q3 2018 comes at 27 percent while Samsung managed to grab 23 percent on market share. In the previous quarter, Samsung had 29 percent market share while Xiaomi had 28 percent market share.

The third position in terms of market share in Q3 2018 goes to Vivo with around 10 percent share. Micromax and Oppo stands at fourth and fifth position with 9 percent and 8 percent market share respectively. Oddly, Huawei is nowhere in the top 5 smartphone brands in terms of market share in India for the third quarter.

The phones costing between $150-250 contributed to almost a third of the smartphone volume during the quarter, thanks to the back-to-back launches of aggressively priced mid-range devices. The report indicates that the fourth quarter will see a more intense fight in the premium segment given that this segment is growing faster than the overall market because of aggressive pricing.

The already delayed Meizu X8 spotted in Two Beautiful Gradient colors! Goes on sale tomorrow

Meizu X8 is the company’s first attempt at a notched screen smartphone. While we weren’t exactly excited to see a notch on a Meizu phone (they have been avoiding it all this time), the X8 turned out to be a pretty competitive smartphone, featuring the premium mid-range Snapdragon 710 under $250. Overall, the phone offers tremendous value for money at its competitive price tag. Unfortunately, those who were eager to get their hands on the device had to go through multiple delays. But there seems to be a small surprise in store as the phone has been spotted in two beautiful gradient variants.

[envira-gallery id=”218662″]

Back when Meizu announced the X8, it was available in three colors: Blue, Black, and White. These are pretty good colors but in this age where even mid-rangers are coming in beautiful gradient colors, the plain color schemes on the X8 could have looked a bit outdated. The company seems to be readying two gradient color options: Blue-Purple and Gold-Pink. From the teaser video, it looks like they’ll have a high gloss finish, but overall, they look quite beautiful. Interestingly, if you remember, the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite (Xiaomi’s first gradient model) came in similar gradient color options. So Meizu could have been inspired by the Mi 8 Lite in getting these colors right on its new model.

The company was unable to arrange sufficient stock for the Meizu X8 (display production issues) before the scheduled October 15 date. As a result, it had to release an apology letter to its fans and postponed the release to October 25. It’s highly likely that we’ll hear about these two gradient versions tomorrow.

The X8 offers compelling specs at its sub-$250 price tag in China. You can read all about the phone from our launch article here.

MediaTek announces Helio P70: brings improvements over the P60

The Helio P70 isn’t very different from the P60. The chipset is still built by TSMC using their 12nm FinFET technology, has Cortex-A73 and Cortex A53 cores in the same 4+4 arrangement, and features the same ARM Mali-G72 GPU. What has changed is the clock speeds.

Helio P70 Infographic

The CPU is now clocked at 2.1GHz for the A73 cores and 2.0GHz for the A53 cores. The GPU is also clocked higher at 900MHz. MediaTek says the higher clock speed results in a 13% increase in performance. The AI processing unit (APU) also brings a 10-30% improvement in processing efficiency compared to the Helio P60.

Gaming hasn’t taken a back seat. Compared to the P60, the Helio P70 uses 35% less power and provides 7% DOU in games that require higher processing power. The chipset also supports up to a single 32MP camera or 24+16MP dual cameras. There is a new high-resolution depth engine that provides a 3x boost in depth-mapping performance. It also has a hardware warping engine for electronic image stabilization (EIS) that saves 23mA per second instead of assigning it to the GPU.

Nokia 8110 4G featured

Except for HMD Global’s Nokia, Jio feature phone is another top contender in the market which offers 4G enabled smartphones. Nokia has already plenty of feature phones in the market and is catering to the growth of the company. To boost up the feature phone segment and get some more sales, company plans to expand its feature phone portfolio.

In countries like India, there’s a massive demand for cheap devices with entertainment features and good battery backup. Already, feature phone segment in the country is witnessing rapid growth from past some years. The stats and the need of the users have once again attracted Nokia to provide 4G enabled feature smartphone.

Still, there’s a long time left for the launch of Nokia 4G enabled feature phone. The development includes various aspects like planning, developing, marketing, etc. So, it will surely be going to take some time to announce the device in India.

In summers this year, Nokia launched the Nokia 8110 4G feature phone which gained a good number of sales. Now to capitalize on the success of the Nokia 8110 4G feature phone. Nokia is going to reveal another feature phone very soon. Additionally, it carries 2.4-inch display with 2-megapixel camera and Qualcomm Snapdragon 205 SoC. Majorly, it has a battery standby of 25 days with a full charge. In connectivity, Nokia 8110 4G supports Bluetooth 4.1, WiFi, micro USB, GPS, computer sync, etc.

We hope in future, Nokia considers some new trends and make them the part of upcoming Nokia 4G enabled feature phone.

Motorola partners with iFixit for battery and display repair kits

In a new announcement, Motorola has partnered with iFixit for OEM repair kits. Under the iFixit #righttorepair campaign, Lenovo owned Motorola has made a stand to offer its customers OEM repair kits to fix their Motorola devices. iFixit is a company which provides repair parts for various consumer electronic products. It helps consumers to repair their devices themselves by selling the repairing kits. It also offers dedicated video courses for fixing.

iFixit always tries to convince OEMs to let users repair their devices themselves, rather than shooting to the service centers. Some companies have already partnered with iFixit on this take, and Motorola is the latest OEM who has joined the club.

Speaking on the occasion of partnership, iFixit says, “Motorola is setting an example for major manufacturers to embrace a more open attitude towards repair. If you’re a Motorola customer, you can now either send in your broken device directly to Motorola for repair—or you can fix it yourself with the highest quality parts and tools, plus a free step-by-step guide, all included in our official Motorola OEM Fix Kits.”

Currently, there are two types of kits that iFixit has made available on their website. iFixit is providing a particular battery replacement kit and an LCD screen replacement kit. About 70-80% repair for a mobile device is regarding its battery or display. So in order to make the most of the deal, iFixit has made available only battery and display replacement kits.

Along with the genuine replacement parts, iFixit has also added tools that you need while doing the repair of Motorola devices. Both the kits include screwdrivers, bits, tweezers, spudger, opening tool and much more.

iFixit has made available these kits for the devices such as Moto X, Moto X Pure, Moto G4/G4 Plus, Moto Z/Moto Z Play/Z Force Droid, Moto G5 Plus and Droid Turbo 2. We hope in the upcoming times, iFixit will add new Motorola devices’ repair kits in the store.

It would be interesting to know, how Motorola users repair their devices in future times. Is it going to help Motorola users or not?
