Yesterday, Xiaomi had revealed through Weibo that it will be announcing something related to a new fun category. We reported the same and expected it to be something related to the upcoming Xiaomi Play smartphone.

Well, the company has today officially announced that it will be launching the Xiaomi Play smartphone in China on 24th December. Making the announcement, the company said, “New mobile phone, released on December 24, Xiaomi Play comes with traffic, may be the Christmas gift you want most.”

Earlier, we reported that Xiaomi could hold a launch event for the ‘Play’ smartphone, which could possibly be named Xiaomi Mi Play, between December 17 and December 26. This will mark the expansion of the company’s portfolio of smartphones with a new series and the Xiaomi Play will be the first smartphone in this new series.

The ‘Play’ name hints that the phone will focus on entertainment, gaming, other such ‘fun’ stuff. There are rumors suggesting that the Xiaomi Play will be the rebranded version of the Pocophone F1 for the Chinese market.

As for the specifications, the Poco F1 sports a 6.18-inch IPS LCD notched display that produces Full HD+ resolution and a layer of Gorilla Glass for protection from minor scratches. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 845 flagship processor and comes with LiquidCool technology.

Android Pie update hitting Xiaomi Mi A2 today (December 18)

By

-

Dec 18, 2018

Android 9.0 Pie is still relatively new and hasn’t exactly gotten to a notable percentage of Android devices. A number of Android One phones have started receiving the update to Android Pie, coupled with several flagship models that were launched with Android Pie pre-installed. However, the usage percentage of Android Pie is still unknown as Google last updated the Android usage chart in October and Android Pie wasn’t captured.

Android 9 Pie is finally here! Mi A2 will be the first of our Android One phones to receive the update from 18 Dec! Get ready for all Android 9 Pie features! RT if you have your slice of the Pie now! #MiA2 #Android9Pie #Android9 #AndroidPie pic.twitter.com/7mNfl3Wsd6

— Xiaomi #48MPforEveryone (@xiaomi) December 17, 2018

The Mi A2 is now set to swell the number of models that is rocking Android Pie already as Xiaomi has announced that the Android One phone will start receiving the update on December 18. Before now, a few Xiaomi Mi A2 users who are beta testers received the Android 9 Pie update on November 16 but the update will be without restriction.

This update will make the Mi A2 become Xiaomi’s first Android One model to receive the stable Android Pie update. The update is pretty fast compared to the pace the Mi A1 received Android Oreo update. The same fate might befall the A1 but we can’t say for sure. However, since Mi A2 Lite also got the Android Pie stable ROM delivered to select users 10 days after the A2, it simply means the global release of its own stable ROM to users isn’t too far behind. Perhaps, Xiaomi will start pushing updates to Mi A2 Lite phones around New Year’s Eve or in early January.

As a reminder, Android Pie brings along several interesting features such as adaptive battery, dark mode, app actions, app timer, adaptive brightness, slices, accessibility menu, easier text selection, new screenshot shortcut, a new home button, new gesture navigation, easier screen rotation, indoor navigation via Wi-Fi RTT, an improved DND (Do not disturb mode), lockdown mode, 157 new emojis, multiple camera support and lot more.

Amazon’s Ring video doorbell patents look to use facial recognition to identify criminals and alert the police

By

-

Dec 18, 2018

Amazon patent application sheds light on a way to monitor the vicinity with a doorbell camera that could alert homeowners and police of any suspicious activities. Ring, Amazon’s video doorbell company, has forwarded two facial recognition-related patent applications to the US Patent and Trademark Office this year and both have received several criticisms in regard to civil liberties.

The company that was acquired by Amazon in April filed two patent applications which became popular in recent weeks. Both examined ways of using Ring’s devices to identify “suspicious” people in a neighbourhood and then automatically inform the law enforcement agencies. Persons such as convicted felons, sex offenders or people on a “most wanted” record.

Presently, Ring’s doorbells do not have facial recognition feature for identification of specific people. A similar technology is Google’s Nest Hello video doorbells that already include facial recognition software to identify friends and relatives, but a connection to law enforcement is not included. However, the patent applications raise fresh concerns with regard to tech companies’ initial use of facial recognition software. The American Civil Liberties Union has often criticized the idea, saying that it could generate an unjust surveillance state which could target political activists and those unfairly deemed a menace to the public.

A representative for Amazon told The Washington Post that “Amazon normally files forward-looking patent applications that regard new, potential tech”. The spokesman added that patent applications do not necessarily reflect development plans. Sure, this is one patent for the future and there are lots of hurdles to cross if ever Amazon hopes to deploy this tech.

HTC Desire 12s Launched bearing a sleek design, unimpressive specs and modest pricing

By

-

Dec 17, 2018

Taiwanese smartphone giant HTC Monday came out with a new phone announcement – the Desire 12s which follows the same design language of the U12 Life. HTC may not have given up entirely on the smartphone market just yet as it holds the belief that 5G connectivity and blockchain technology will in some way get the ailing company back in its feet. However, before that happens, the budget HTC Desire 12s has just been formally launched and commercially released in Taiwan.

This is the tech’s first giant “mainstream” device n several months and seeing the wide availability of the Desire 12 and 12+ in Europe, an extension out of Asia definitely doesn’t feel out of the question for the HTC Desire 12s. There’s definitely no reason, neither do you necessarily need to own cryptocurrency to be able to afford this modest “5.7-incher”, which begins at the reasonable equivalent amount of $195 or so in HTC’s domestic market. Alas, you don’t get a lot of features for your bucks, as the entry-level configuration includes 3GB RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. A 4GB+64GB variant is around the equivalent of $225.

The Desire 12s borrows the two-tone design from the U12 Life and this is certainly an awesome, magnificent touch for an otherwise unsurprising product, attempting to give the best of both worlds with an original Glossy texture and Matte finish blend.

The Desire 12s features a 5.7-inch display with HD+ resolution of 720 x 1440pixels and 18:9 aspect ratio. There’s no notch and judging by the renders, the side bezels are really thin while the upper and lower ones are decent for an entry-level phone too. The 12s packs a modest Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor.

Further, the device packs a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and surprisingly there is only a single camera at the front and rear. Both rear and selfies sensors are 13MP cameras. Interestingly, it is easy to confuse the rear camera for a dual setup whereas it is a single sensor with the LED flash by its side. The device gets its interface from Android 8.1 Oreo software and is powered by a 3,075 mAh battery with no support for fast charging.
