A significant proportion of Apple’s AI team were previously Googlers

Apple has also started working on artificial intelligence to keep up with the competition such as OpenAI and Google regarding AI capabilities. Since 2018 Apple has hired at least 36 professionals with experience in AI development at Google, according to a study conducted by the Financial Times based on LinkedIn profiles of the professionals. Previously, the company has hired John Giannandrea, Google’s former head of AI. He joined Apple as the company’s top AI executive.

Apple

An Apple Research Paper on multimodal large language models was published last month. It listed six authors who were recruited by Google in the past two years. Nine of the 31 authors listed Google as their last employer on their LinkedIn profiles. Two other professionals reportedly left Microsoft to join Apple. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also tried to contact and hire Google’s AI researchers with personal emails.

It seems to be a part of the broader “AI talent war” among the big giants. Google previously hired Logan Kilpatrick, OpenAI’s former head of developer relations.

Speaking of Apple’s development of AI, the company has reportedly formed a team of artificial intelligence experts in a secretive European laboratory in Zurich. The professionals have experience working with Google and some other big tech companies. The laboratory is referred to as the “Vision Lab” and it appears to focus on advanced multimodal large language models. The company’s other AI development centers are located in California and Seattle.

The development is expected to enrich iOS 18 with generative AI features in various applications, including Siri, Spotlight, Shortcuts, Apple Music, Messages, Health, Keynote, Numbers, and Pages. Apple is taking the on-device approach to run the features and has also acquired French startup Datakalab to develop its on-device large language model.

Samsung Galaxy F55 5G renders leaked, Geekbench listing reveals Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chip

Samsung Galaxy F55 5G is scheduled to launch this month in India. A recent teaser released by the brand revealed that it will have stitched vegan leather on the back. Ahead of the launch, well-known tipster Evan Blass has leaked the official renders of the F55 to showcase its color variant. The leather back design of the phone suggests that it will be a rebranded version of the Galaxy C55, which recently debuted in China. At the same time, the F55 has also surfaced on Geekbench to reveal key details about its chipset, RAM, and Android version.

The Geekbench listing of the Galaxy F55 5G (SM-E556B) has revealed that it will feature the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset. The listing does not mention the name of the chip, but the CPU configuration and GPU detail (Adreno 644, available via source code) confirm the device is equipped with the said chipset.

The listing also indicates that it has 8 GB of RAM and Android 14. In the single-core test, the device scored 843 points, and in the multi-core test, it recorded a score of 2307. Although the phone’s other specifications remain undisclosed, speculation suggests they will mirror those of the C55.

The Galaxy C55 has a 6.7-inch FHD+ 120Hz AMOLED display, up to 12 GB of RAM, 256 GB of built-in storage, and a 5,000mAh battery with 45W fast charging. It has a 50-megapixel front camera, and a 50-megapixel (main, with OIS) + 8-megapixel (ultra-wide) + 2-megapixel (macro) triple camera unit. HMD Vibe: A Budget-Friendly Phone for the US Market, But Will it Vibe with Consumers?

HMD Global, the company known for Nokia-branded Android phones, has recently unveiled a new smartphone specifically for the US market called the HMD Vibe. This phone is designed to appeal to budget-conscious users, but how well will it compete in a market saturated with other affordable options? Let’s delve into the phone’s features, specifications, price, and potential challenges in the US and global markets, particularly India.

HMD Vibe

1. HMD Vibe: Features and Specifications

The Vibe offers a budget Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 processor, suitable for everyday tasks. It comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage, along with 4GB of virtual RAM for enhanced performance. The 4,000mAh battery promises two days of usage on a single charge, but with only 10W wired charging, it might not appeal to users who prioritize fast charging capabilities.

The display is a decent-sized 6.56 inches with an HD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. The camera system is basic, featuring a 13MP main sensor and a 2MP depth sensor on the back, and a 5MP front-facing camera. All cameras include HDR, AI processing, and skin tone optimization.

The phone boasts an IP52 rating, making it dust-proof and splash-resistant. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.0 and 4G LTE, but it lacks a fingerprint scanner, relying solely on insecure face unlock for biometric security.

2. Price and Availability

The HMD Vibe carries a competitive price tag of $150. It will be available for purchase in the US from May onwards through HMD’s website and major retailers like Amazon and Best Buy.

3. HMD Vibe vs. the US Market

While the Vibe’s price point is attractive, the US market offers a plethora of other affordable smartphones with potentially better features. Some competitors in this range include the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G, TCL 50 5G, and TCL 50 XE 5G which boast 5G connectivity, and the Moto G Play (2024) which comes with 4G connectivity.

Therefore, the Vibe might face stiff competition, especially considering consumers can even find 5G phones at a similar price point.

4. HMD Vibe vs. the Global Market (India)

The HMD Pulse series, which the Vibe is likely a rebranded version of, is also planned for launch in markets like India. However, the Indian smartphone market is highly competitive, with numerous brands offering devices with much better specifications at similar prices.

For instance, several Chinese manufacturers provide phones with superior camera capabilities, faster processors, and larger storage options within the $150 range.

Therefore, the Vibe’s success in the Indian market is less certain, given the abundance of feature-packed competitors at competitive prices.

5. Branding and Design Considerations

While the HMD Vibe aims for a budget-conscious audience, its branding strategy might raise questions. HMD has dropped the familiar Nokia branding, which could potentially impact brand recognition.

Furthermore, the “Vibe” name itself might resonate more with a Gen Z audience, but the phone’s design doesn’t necessarily exude a trendy or particularly attractive aesthetic that would appeal to this demographic.

6. Conclusion

The HMD Vibe offers a decent set of features for its price point, but its success hinges on its ability to compete in a saturated market, particularly in the US where strong competitors exist with potentially better value propositions.

In highly competitive markets like India, the Vibe’s middling specifications might not be enough to stand out against feature-rich devices offered by other manufacturers.

HMD’s branding strategy of moving away from Nokia and the phone’s design choices might also present challenges in terms of establishing a strong brand identity and attracting a specific target audience.

Overall, while the Vibe might find a niche in the US market due to its budget-friendly price, its long-term success will depend on how effectively it addresses the competition and adapts its branding and design to resonate with target consumers.

Several reports have claimed that Vivo will unveil the Vivo X100s and Vivo X100 Ultra this month in China. Ahead of the launch, a poster showcasing the design of both phones is now being circulated on Chinese social media platforms. The image gives a good look at the design of both phones.

It appears that the device on the left is the Vivo X100 Ultra, while the green device on the right seems to be the X100s. The Zeiss logo sits in the centre of the round camera module on both phones, but their camera arrangements differ. The two phones sport three cameras, which seemingly consist of the primary camera, an ultra-wide lens, and a periscope telephoto camera.

According to reports, the Vivo X100s will have the same cameras that are available on the Vivo X100, which debuted in November last year. Therefore, the device is expected to feature a 50-megapixel main camera with OIS support, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and an OIS-enabled 64-megapixel periscope telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom.

The Vivo X100 features a curved-edge display and the Dimensity 9300 chipset. According to rumors, the X100s will have a flat display and the upcoming Dimensity 9300+ chipset. The rest of its specifications will be identical to the X100.

There is a possibility that the device will be called the Vivo X100s Ultra when it breaks cover.

Honor 200 Lite feature highlights: Does it offer enough for the price?

Honor recently launched its latest smartphone, the Honor 200 Lite, in Europe. It’s priced at €329.90 for the sole 8/256GB model. So the phone falls into the mid-range category, offering the essential features you’d typically find in a smartphone at this price point.

Honor 200 Lite Feature Highlights

But does it have anything to make it stand out for its price? Let’s take a look at its features here.

1. Display and Design

The Honor 200 Lite features a large 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2412 pixels. AMOLED displays are known for their deeper blacks, richer colors, and excellent viewing angles. This makes the Honor 200 Lite suitable for consuming content, browsing the web, or playing games.

However, the phone lacks support for a higher refresh rate which is increasingly common in mid-range devices these days. This might be a consideration for users who prioritize smoother scrolling and animations.

2. Performance

The Honor 200 Lite is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 6080 chipset and is paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Dimensity 6080 is a mid-range octa-core processor that can handle most everyday tasks with ease.

You can run social media apps, browse the web, and multitask between light applications pretty easily. Gamers may also find the performance adequate for casual titles, but demanding games might experience frame rate drops or lag.

As for the software, the phone comes with Magic OS 8.0 based on Android 14 out of the box. The OS includes features like Honor’s AI-enhanced applications, Magic Portal, and Magic Capsule.

It’s unclear though how quickly the phone will receive future Android updates. This is a crucial factor for long-term software security and functionality.

3. Camera

The Honor 200 Lite features a dual rear camera system consisting of a 108MP main sensor, a 5MP ultrawide, and a 2MP macro sensor. The main sensor should be able to capture decent photos in well-lit conditions, while you can use the 5MP ultrawide sensor to capture more details in a shot.

The 2MP macro sensor is usually gimmicky, so you shouldn’t expect anything exceptional out of it. The front-facing camera is a 50MP sensor that will be suitable for basic selfies and video calls.

4. Battery and others

Keeping all the things powered is a generous 4500mAh battery. It should provide a full day’s worth of usage for moderate users, but power users might need to top up throughout the day. The phone supports 35W fast charging.

Moreover, you get all the basic connectivity features like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer. The phone also includes a fingerprint sensor on the side for biometrics.

The Honor 200 Lite comes in three color options: Starry Blue, Cyan Lake, and Black.

Samsung will Likely Mass-Produce 2nm Chips in 2025, Utilizing GAA Technology

Samsung‘s foundry business has been facing difficulties attracting customers for their latest chip manufacturing processes (3nm and 4nm). Despite this challenge, they are actively forging ahead with development of even more advanced technology, including the 2nm process.

Samsung is also planning to mass produce chips using 3nm tech later this year

This 2nm process will utilize next-generation gate-around transistor (GAA) technology, which is expected to be mass produced in 2025. Samsung will be showcasing this technology at upcoming industry conferences.

Samsung Sued by ASUS

GAA itself is a new transistor design that improves efficiency and performance by allowing for better current flow. Samsung first introduced GAA technology in their 3nm process, but so far, only their own Exynos processors have taken advantage of it. Compared to 5nm chips, the first-generation 3nm GAA chip offers significant improvements in area reduction, performance, and energy efficiency.

Looking ahead, Samsung plans to mass produce chips using the second-generation 3nm GAA technology later in 2024. This technology is expected to offer even greater advancements. While their main competitor, TSMC, hasn’t adopted GAA technology yet, both companies (along with Intel) are expected to utilize it in their upcoming 2nm processes.

The wait is over for Windows 11 users! After months in beta, The Browser Company has finally launched the official version of Arc browser 1.0.1. Users can now download and use Arc directly without needing to join a waiting list.

Windows 10 users may have to wait longer for their turn to try the browser out.

However, there’s a catch: Arc currently only supports Windows 11. Those on Windows 10 will need to wait a bit longer for their turn. There’s also good news for users with ARM-based Windows machines, as a native ARM64 version of Arc is planned for a future release. Interestingly, the Windows version of Arc leverages Apple’s Swift programming language, similar to the macOS version. This allows the browser to share some core code with its Mac counterpart.

Arc has a unique interface with a sidebar that houses features like tabs, library, easels & notes, spaces, boosts, and archived tabs. It also has some innovative features like the ability to rename tabs, peek into links before opening them, and take notes within the browser.

However, Arc also has some hard edges. It has a steep learning curve due to its new design and reliance on keyboard shortcuts. Overall, it is a promising new browser with some innovative features, but some may argue that it is not ready for mass adoption yet. Well, with a whole new user base, we’ll find out soon what people think about the Browser.

Apple is Working on a Fix for iPhone Alarms Not Going Off as Expected

According to recent reports, a new issue has been plaguing some iPhone users where their phone alarms aren’t going off as expected. Apple has acknowledged the problem and is actively working on a fix.

People on social media have been very vocal about this issue, and Apple is taking steps

Social media reports over the past few weeks highlighted this issue, and some users suspect it might be linked to the iPhone’s “Gaze Awareness” feature. This feature is designed to automatically reduce notification volume when the user is looking at the phone. The speculation is that Gaze Awareness might be misinterpreting user attention and lowering the alarm volume even when the user is asleep.

Apple iPhone 15

While Apple hasn’t confirmed the exact cause, users can try disabling Gaze Awareness as a potential solution. This can be done through the Settings app by navigating to Face ID & Passcode and turning off Gaze Awareness. Resolving this issue is quite high up in Apple’s list of priorities, since Alarms are key to any smartphone user’s schedule, and bugs and issues like these only add to the exasperation of the user who has to rely on other methods to set an alarm reliably. We’ll keep you updated if and when Apple releases a fix for this, stay tuned to Gizmochina for more.

Since then, it has periodically released some unique variants and special editions of this smartwatch, like the Huawei Watch GT 4 Spring Edition and the Watch GT 4 Gold Milanese version.

Now, tipster @MysteryLupin has claimed that the brand is preparing to launch another variant of the Watch GT 4 in Europe. Although the tipster has not mentioned the exact name of this edition, it is clear from the images shared that it will be based on the existing 41mm model.

The smartwatch will feature a silver body, paired with mint green color straps. This will be the first time that the brand will be launching a silver color body for the 41mm model of the Watch GT 4.
