For quite some time, there has been an ongoing battle between iOS and Android in the realm of mobile operating systems, and Huawei joined this competition at some point. Despite HarmonyOS being available for a while, it hasn’t gained much popularity beyond China and doesn’t seem likely to do so. The main reason for this lack of traction is the absence of many popular apps on the AppGallery. This implies that users who switch from Android or iOS may need to forgo even the simplest applications.

While it’s not impossible to install these apps, the technicalities involved may not be of much interest to the average user. However, it appears that this issue is gradually becoming a thing of the past as McDonald’s has begun developing a native app for Huawei HarmonyOS. Here are the details….

McDonald’s Joins HarmonyOS Ecosystem, Starts Developing Native App

A Chinese blogger has claimed that McDonald’s has started developing a native Huawei HarmonyOS app. The blogger shared photos of a signing ceremony and launch event between Huawei and McDonald’s China. However, Huawei has not yet officially confirmed the news. If you believe there’s nothing remarkable about the McDonald’s app, think again. McDonald’s is a US-based restaurant and it is very important that it made such a decision despite the US pressure.

As we mentioned above, HarmonyOS faces a notable challenge beyond China due to the lack of commonly used everyday applications. This could be just the beginning, and we might witness global companies stepping in to contribute to HarmonyOS. Their involvement could boost its competitiveness by expanding the array of applications available on the platform. In September, the companies CEO Richard Yu announced that HarmonyOS NEXT, the next version of HarmonyOS, is ready for release.

He said that native HarmonyOS apps will bring a historic leap forward for the mobile app ecosystem, with smoother, smarter, and more secure experiences. Huawei has said that companies and developers from a variety of industries, including finance, travel, and social media, have already joined the HarmonyOS ecosystem and are developing native HarmonyOS apps. However, this is expected to increase further

Huawei phones have AppGallery as the app marketplace. The Google Play Store alternative for HarmonyOS devices is now getting service widgets support, which apparently simplifies the user experience of the app.

As reported by Huawei Central, users with HarmonyOS devices can now add the new AppGallery service widgets to their home screens. The process is straightforward, simply pinch inwards on the home screen and tap on “Service widgets” at the bottom. Next, you need to select “AppGallery,” and the screen will present you with various sizes and feature options for the AppGallery service widgets.

(Via Huawei Central)

You can also remove or edit any service widgets by pinching inwards on the home screen, tapping on Service widgets, and selecting the widget you want to change. The AppGallery service widgets are rolling out with the latest software builds for HarmonyOS. It may take some time for the widgets to reach all users.

Huawei has started shipping the beta version of HarmonyOS 4.0, the latest iteration of its operating system, to some phones. So far, the company has opened the beta program in China for over 36 phones and tablets and the software has been installed on 5 million devices already.

The new software brings interesting features. For one, there’s a new Live Window, which is similar to Apple’s Dynamic Island. It lets supported apps show real-time alerts and notifications in a pill-shaped icon on the corner of your device. You can tap on the icon to expand the window and interact with the app. HarmonyOS 4.0 also has rich theme templates and a stylized layout design. You’ll be able to select the colors of your app icons and set emoji wallpapers and home screens based on your favorite emoji.

Kiloo, the co-developer, and publisher of the massively successful Subway Surfers (between 2012-2020) has exclusively launched their new game on the Huawei AppGallery dubbed MetroLand. The game is quite similar to Subway Surfers as it is an endless runner game and applies the same core mechanics as its predecessor. However, it incorporates new design trends, polished gameplay, and adds new meta elements to appeal to a wider variety of user profiles.

MetroLand, as the title suggests, has a metropolitan setting. The gameplay takes place across a number of cities and includes seven different areas that unlock as progress is made. It aims to illustrate busy, modern city life with an emphasis on momentum, speed, and excitement. You can play as one of the many characters offered by the game in their quest to rebel against the evil MegaCorp.

The game is targeted at a broader audience and therefore will bring regular updates themed around annual events like Halloween, and other holidays as well as weekly events to keep players engaged. The game also offers character progression by introducing mechanics such as evolving characters by sending them on missions and evolving them as you go through the levels.

This new addition to Huawei’s AppGallery is sure to attract new users and fans of endless running games. It will also offer an increased variety of games available on the platform for existing users.

On the release of MetroLand on the AppGallery, Dr. Jaime Gonzalo, VP of Huawei Mobile Services states “Games can be longer or shorter, easier or harder, cartoonish or realistic. But ultimately what separates good games from the great ones is their level of fun. And that´s precisely the key criteria for the AppGallery editors to cherry-pick the best games in the market for our users. With that logic in mind, we are extremely pleased to offer to all AppGallery users across all Android smartphones, the next generation of endless runners, from the hands of those who hold the crown in that genre, the outstanding Kiloo team.”

The company recently unveiled the HarmonyOS 2, expanding the OS to its entire smartphone lineup. The HarmonyOS AppGallery was revealed to have already got up to 134,000 apps with over 4 million developers. The Chinese tech giant has continued to expand the ecosystem and has now announced the addition of two new exciting games, Manor Matters and Left to Survive.

The addition of the two games is not just delightful to fans because it offers them some more gaming options, but most importantly because it means Huawei has successfully gotten new app developers throwing up the possibility of further expanding the ecosystem.

The two games are developed by gaming developer Playrix and top gaming publisher MY.GAMES respectively. This isn’t Playrix’s first game on the AppGallery. The app developer had earlier published two popular games Gardenscapes and Homescapes. Manor Matters and Left to Survive are presently available to download on AppGallery.

Huawei’s AppGallery remains a smart and innovative ecosystem that allows developers to create unique experiences for consumers. The HMS Core integrated with HarmonyOS allows apps to be integrated across different devices, delivering more convenience and a smoother experience. Thus, you are not restricted to just your smartphones with this new games.

With 134,000 apps already, Huawei’s AppGallery is among the top three app marketplaces globally. Once the Google PlayStore and Apple App Store have more apps. Huawei still has a long way to go, though, before it can play catch up with the two market leaders.

The AppGallery is available to users in more than 170 countries and regions and according to Huawei, the store has over 540 million monthly active users globally.

At the moment, the messaging app has hundreds of millions of users in about 190 countries and is one of the first major brands to join the Chinese tech giant’s AppGallery. Furthermore, the app is even one of the most popular in the application store. For those unaware, Viber is a popular messaging and calling app that offers support for both audio and video calls and functions similar to another popular messenger, WhatsApp.

The two companies are now further teaming up to deliver deeper engagement with the growing user base. Notably, the success of the app is part of its plans of embracing Huawei’s “Global + Local” strategy. This had the smartphone maker focus on developing relationships with app providers and developers. Derek Yu, Vice President of Huawei CEE & Nordic at Huawei Consumer Business Group stated that “Lots of popular apps offer global services but these are not always in-sync with users’ local needs.”

Anna Znamenskaya, Chief Growth Officer at Rakuten Viber, also added that “We are very pleased to have such an important market player as Huawei as our partner. We are also glad that its users like our app. The data we receive from Viber downloads shows that our efforts are on the right track and our partnership is paying off. We are confident that our cooperation has a great future!”

For those unaware, Withings is a France based health tech company. Now, the Chinese tech giant has partnered with Withings to brings its popular Health Mate app to its AppGallery platform, Huawei’s proprietary app ecosystem. The Health Mate app allows users to “visualize their health data with actionable insights.” The application is also designed to display customized info to the user, along with personalized messaging and tips based on their recorded data and health.

Furthermore, it can even inform the user regarding any health irregularities so they can take proper preventative action. Meaning, one essentially has a digital personal health coach. This would allow users to improve their fitness routines and even track trends and their progress.

While the service has continued to grow over the years, one major challenge is the rich large Android ecosystem that Google has built over the years. Although Huawei has made tremendous progress in its efforts to expand the HMS ecosystem, it is still miles away from Android.

However, hope seems to be in sight for Huawei as a developer partner has created an open-source solution that adapters Google apps for the AppGallery. The solution is developed by developer partner bluesource, Europe’s leading provider of enterprise app solutions. It is an open-source method that adapts GMS apps for AppGallery removing the need to redevelop apps specifically for Huawei’s app store.

The solution is christened Choice SDK and Huawei claims it makes it easy for app publishers to transform their existing apps based on GMS and Firebase frameworks into HMS usable applications. Thus, developers won’t need to create an HMS version of their apps, thus saving cost and time in app development as just little effort is needed for the apps to run on Huawei devices.

The open-source Choice SDK was originally developed for Raiffeisen Bank to help the bank make their app available to Huawei phone users in Austria. Bluesource has since made it available as open-source software so that other brands and developers can get their apps adapted faster, safer and in a more convenient way. Since it became open-source, the Choice SDK has reportedly been utilized by Austria’s national TV broadcaster ORF, Austrian Federal Railways ÖBB, Austria’s Postal Service and deals app Aktionsfinder.

Since it was rolled out in 2019, Huawei’s AppGallery has experienced a massive growth which has catapulted it to become the world’s third largest app marketplace with 530 million monthly active users (MAUs). The company recorded a massive 61.5% growth YoY in Europe to record more than 42 million users. Huawei has offered various incentives ranging from cash to a lion share of revenue from the apps and it worked. Huawei presently has over 2.3 million registered HMS developers with about 300,000 outside China. The platform has increased the number of registered developers to 2.3 million, up by 77% vs last year, and now also counts 300,000 developers outside China. Presently, there are about 120,000 apps integrated with HMS Core, an increase of 118% compared to last year.

The app ecosystem has achieved a new milestone, with its app distribution numbers nearly doubling within just 12 months.

For those unaware, the AppGallery is the Chinese tech giant’s proprietary app store, which is the world’s third largest at the moment. Currently, the platform has over 2.3 million registered developers. This is up by 77 percent from last year, along with a diverse global audience of more than 530 million active monthly users. Furthermore, the platform’s app distribution reached 384.4 billion in 2020, which was more than last year by 174 billion. Notably, gaming was at the forefront of this explosive growth.

As of right now, AppGallery has over 500 percent more games available on the the app store compared to the platform last year. The AppGallery has also helped over 10,000 Chinese apps enter the global market, further diversifying its global userbase’s app experience. Top performers in this regard include apps like Banggood, Pascal’s Wager, and Rise of Kingdoms: Lost Crusade. Interestingly, this also highlights the company’s efforst into bringing the “Global + Local” strategy to its platform.

According to Zhang Zhe Director of Global Partnerships & Eco-Development Business Development at Huawei Consumer Business Group, “At the end of 2019, there were 25 countries around world which had over a million AppGallery users. That number has now grown to 42 and we continue to see strong growth across markets in Europe, Latin America, Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa. It’s not just about quantity, and the fact that the number of apps integrated with HMS Core has more than doubled in one year shows that more developers are looking to Huawei’s on-device capabilities to drive innovation and provide better and more unique user experiences.”

The app was added to its ecosystem earlier today (25th February 2021). This arrives after the Chinese tech giant’s study revealed that 78 percent of Brits have used technology to relieve stress or to motivate themselves during the pandemic. During the lockdown, a 17 percent rise was observed in the number of people practicing mindfulness to cope with stress. At the moment, the Huawei AppGallery is the third largest app store in the world, which has now also added Headspace into the platform.

Through Headspace, the company aims to give customers access to ‘additional wellbeing support during this time of increased stress.’ According to Neil Shah, Chief De-Stressing Officer at The Stress Management Society, “It’s inevitable that every single one of us has been impacted in one way or another by the events of the last 12 months – and as we find ourselves living in a strange new reality, it is imperative that we find strategies to increase our resilience to cope with the unfamiliar, uncertain and challenging times we find ourselves living through.”

Jowlawn Victor, Chief International Officer at Headspace also added that “Since the lockdowns started last March, 10 times the number of people in the UK are following our ‘Reframing Anxiety at Home’ workout, and the ‘Stress meditation’ exercise is being listened to six times more than before lockdown; showing just how important a role the app is playing in supporting our mental wellbeing. Some Headspace courses have even had a 1000% spike in users as people turn to our app to help them feel more in control of their wellbeing during these unprecedented times.”

This promotion is to help bring the benefits of e-commerce and online retail to businesses and app developers during this time of crisis.

As per the company’s official notes, the campaign aims to boost and support brands and enterprises that are facing hurdles in operations due to the state of the market caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. Thus, the Chinese tech giant is providing benefits to businesses by offering prominent positioning on its AppGallery’s ‘Collections’ tab, which highlights e-commerce brands.

This is a sliding banner on the home page of the platform and offers free advertising to brands worth up to 2,500 Euros (roughly 3,000 US Dollars). Any brand or content provider can sign up for this promotion anytime from now until the 31st of December 2020. In other words, Huawei is offerings brands advertising/exposure to its 36 million active monthly userbase of AppGallery in Europe for free.

At the moment, the Chinese smartphone maker is targeting three specific business groups with this offer, including businesses that currently have no presence on AppGallery; second, being businesses with apps already available on the platform but are also “willing to upgrade to Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) in order to gain from the platform’s additional advantages and increased audience”; and finally, the third being “e-commerce businesses whose apps already integrated with HMS.”

According to Wang Heng, Vice President, Global Partnerships and Eco-Development at Huawei Consumer Business Group, “We want to galvanize businesses and app developers in the e-commerce retail industry to accelerate their listing on AppGallery before the end of the year. Huawei mobile users are looking for great ideas and inspiration while they are in or in-between lockdowns, and becoming part of AppGallery, particularly with the extra exposure and promotional boost we can deliver, will ensure these apps are positioned front and center of their search.”

In fact, the company is trying its best to widen the universe and the latest attempt is by announcing a special funding program in partnership with Unity. This includes perks like revenue share, VIP support, prizes, and more.

As reported by cnTechPost, Huawei‘s new program is for Indie Game developers. For the unware, games from the indie community are independent and either from an Individual/Small group. Mostly, these teams don’t have a lot of technical/financial support when compared to the big names in the industry.

Hence, Huawei’s commitment to this funding program will help the developers gain the limelight and in turn popularize the AppGallery more. Accordingly, a special incentive will be provided for Games published on AppGallery between November 19 and December 14 through the Unity Distribution Portal(UDP). In case you don’t know, UDP helps developers by distributing games to multiple app stores(incl. AppGallery) through a single hub.

That said, the new funding program for indie games comes with many benefits. The highest of them is a whopping €30,000 prize pool for the 30 chosen games. You can take a look at the benefits of the special program below:

85% IAP(In-App-Purchases) revenue share for game developers for the first 2 years. Usually, it is 70% for AppGallery Developers

VIP technical support and store spotlight.

Top indie games will also be featured on a special ‘Indie Game’ slot on the AppGallery store.

30 indie games chosen will receive Huawei Ad Platform credit worth €1,000. And an account manager to set up the acquisition campaign.

EDITOR’S PICK: Huawei wearables stop working, company asks users to download AppGallery

Besides, the advantage of using the UDP is it just requires a single build & metadata profile as you don’t have to create multiple builds of your games w.r.t each App store. Some advantages of using alternative App stores and UDP is it reaches more than 1 billion players, revenue up to $5 billion outside of China.

That said, this is just one of the initiatives to expand the AppGallery ecosystem of Huawei. Introduced way back in 2018 globally, the app store has gained steam after the US ban. As a result, it is currently the third-largest store after Apple and Google counterparts. As per the UDP portal, AppGallery expands to 170+ countries, has 700 million users, and 400 million MAU(monthly active users).

Living to its earlier promise, the company has already brought biggies like Telegram, Hungama, Bolt, HERE Maps to the store. For regions like India, it pre-installs MapmyIndia to distract Google Maps addiction. That said, the Recently added list of Apps also includes Moovit, Booking.com, eSky, Omio, Skyscanner/Turkish Airlines.

Now, Moovit, an intel-owned Mobility service provider has joined the bandwagon of apps on AppGallery.

The app is now available for download on the company’s official AppGallery store. However, it is available as a web version and a customized version on the Huawei browser as well. Huawei says the app service will extend to more than 100 countries and 45 languages. And be locally relevant with vouchers, offers, and gifts. Further, the partnership will collaborate for in-app promotions on Moovit and details will be announced on the app. Besides, 865 million people reportedly use the Moovit service already across 3200 cities.

For the unaware, Moovit is an Israel-based Mobility as a Service provider(MaaS) that gives travel guides for users to transit across cities. Some of its unique features include real-time arrival information, Live Direction with Get off and service alerts, step-by-step guidance, and more. Additionally, the app also has accessibility, screen-reading features for disabled, and blind people respectively.

Moovit basically gathers data from the API framework of local transports and gets information from transport authorities, and its community. For instance, it has been actively updating the transport info during the pandemic with the help of Moovit’s Mooviter community of 700,000 local editors. All these results in accurate real-time routes for journeys in addition to stop-by-stop navigation options.

Huawei’s AppGallery is making a lot of in-roads recently. The company, which promised to bring popular apps to its store, has already brought navigation apps like MapmyIndia pre-installed on Indian devices. Although it was introduced way back in 2018 globally, the app store gained steam after the US ban. The company’s own AppStore is reportedly the third-largest store after Apple and Google. Now, the app store has Moovit, along with other recently-added Travel apps like Booking.com, eSky, Omio, Skyscanner/Turkish Airlines.

Through the new smartphone gaming hub, the Chinese tech giants aim to bring mobile gamers together through “high-quality content and rewards.” This service will connect Huawei users from Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and more. For those interested, the GameCenter app can be downloaded via the AppGallery.

Huawei GameCenter is essentially a one stop gaming service platform. In other words, it is built primarily for gaming, and its related services. In its core, the hub will work around two services, which are the content service and user welfare. With the new gaming platform, Huawei also plans on rewarding users through exclusive online game packages and online offers.

Furthermore, the GameCenter seems to be influenced by the console and PC gaming industry as well, with the platform offering the premiere launch of certain games before any other platform. This includes Starship Legion-AMG, BORN AS EPIC, Farm Legend, Survival Road, Ellr Land, Dynasty Legends: True Hero Rises from Chaos, Goddess MUA and more.
Bolt’s presence on the Huawei AppGallery is a win-win for both the companies. Despite the US ban, Huawei is still the third-largest smartphone maker in Europe with a solid 18% market share. However, until today, AppGallery lacked a popular ride-hailing app like Uber. Technically, you could get the missing apps via third-party app stores like APKPure and Amazon App Store for Android. But now, Bolt fills this void without the need to download any other app store.

Bolt has been gaining a lot of attention in the past few months. In fact, in June 2020, it was voted as the Hottest Unicorn in Europe! The startup recently raised €100 million from Naya Capital Management which it will use to expand its ride-hailing, e-scooter, and even food delivery businesses.

Huawei has managed to add a number of important apps to its AppGallery this year. You’ll find popular apps in multiple categories like Deezer, TIDAL, MX Player, RT, UKTVPlay, Eurosport, Premier League in media and entertainment and Viber, Telegram, TikTok, Tinder, Zoom, Badoo in social. And as of March 2020, Huawei has already integrated over 60,000 apps with HMS Core.

With no signs of respite from the ban, it makes sense for Huawei to invest heavily in its own products like the AppGallery. In this regard, the company recently launched the HUAWEI HMS App Innovation Contest – with an award pool of USD$1 Million Prize.

Honor has equipped with the smartphones to run the vanilla Android OS, skipping over Google services. While many models from the Chinese tech giant are already available without Google services in Europe, this is the first from Honor to launch with Huawei’s AppGallery in India. The AppGallery is Huawei’s version of the Play Store and is a part of the Huawei Mobile Services ecosystem.

People went on the company’s official forum to report on the Huawei Health app not working, which is needed to use Huawei accessories with other brands of smartphones. The company has given out the solution that now requires users to download and install the Health app again but through their proprietary AppGallery.

For those unaware, AppGallery is a part of Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and is the company’s version of Google’s Play Store. The Chinese tech giant launched the service after losing official Google services support back in 2019. Now, the company is asking users to again download the Huawei Health app through its AppGallery, which also needs to be installed and can be found on the official Huawei website.

Editor’s Pick: MapmyIndia’s Move app will come pre-installed on Huawei/Honor smartphones in India

Many Samsung, OnePlus and Google Pixel users reported on facing trouble with their Huawei smart bands and smartwatches. These handsets previously did not require the Huawei Health app from the AppGallery to work but it seems the company has made it necessary. At the moment, Huawei’s version of an app store is still severely lacking in many popular applications, especially the ones owned by Google. While this hasn’t been an issue for Chinese users, the overseas market has to deal with quite a bit of hassle.

The move from the Chinese vendor could have been an attempt to inflate its AppGallery userbase for healthier numbers from across the globe, but that is just speculation. Regardless, Huawei wearables users that use smartphones from other brands are now required to download their services even if they like it or not.

In what can be termed a surprise, HERE WeGo (HERE Maps) is now available on its AppGallery store.

Here WeGo is said to be the second-largest map service after Google Maps. It was originally created by Nokia and released for Windows Phone and the web in 2013 as a replacement for Nokia Maps. The service was later released for Android and iOS in 2015 and renamed to Here WeGo in 2016.

Huawei now joins Amazon as the other big-name manufacturer that uses the mapping service for its products. Here WeGo allows users to download maps offline and provides a free voice-navigation too. Other features include the cost of public transport tickets and fares.

If you own a Huawei phone, you can download the app from here. It is about 61MB in size.

We are not sure if Huawei is still moving forward with TomTom following the recent development but it will be great for users to have multiple options.

Since then, Huawei has launched smartphones with Android OS, but these lack the Google Mobile service and are the vanilla version. Google’s Play Store is the most popular app gallery service in Android so it would be a great obstacle for Huawei and its large user base. Thus, the company had previously announced and launched its Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and is now looking to further expand its software portfolio through the AppSearch.

As of right now, the AppGallery is the official app store from Huawei that lets users download applications. However, this currently lacks many popular apps and does not have the same number of apps that Google’s Play Store’s vast collection stores. This is where the AppSearch comes in, allowing users to find and download such popular APKs. Users had to initially rely on other third party apps stores like Amazon or Aptioide, but this could potentially liven up its software database.

AppSearch is currently being tested in Germany and is publically available on the official Huawei Germany website. According to the official summary, the software aims to help users find their favorite apps for Huawei smartphones with the HMS. The popular apps that can now be found include Facebook, WhatsApp and many more. It is available for the Mate 30 series, P40 series, and even the Mate Xs.

Huawei is calling it the Revenue Share Percentage for the Preferential Policy and it is valid for 24 months and it is valid from when developers accept the agreement before June 30, 2020. The preferential policy becomes effective the first day of the next month after you agree to the policy for developers who had previously signed the AppGallery Joint Operations Sevice Agreement. For those who have not signed the AppGallery Joint Operations Sevice Agreement, the preferential policy begins the same month. Both categories of developers have until June 2020 to benefit from the preferential policy.

Google adopts a 30:70 sharing ratio between it and its developers. This is the same revenue split Apple applies to developers on its App Store. Last year, Epic Games refused to put its popular game, Fortnite, on the Google Play Store. The games studio said the 30% Google took from sales was too high as the “developer’s 70% also covers the cost of developing, operating and supporting the game”.

Epic Games has launched its own game store where developers earn 88% and the store takes 12% of sales.

For those unaware, Huawei had faced a ban from the US Government’s Commerce Department back in 2019. The ban had led to many complications in the company’s operations in the region but also banned it from using various technologies and more from its partner companies that were based in the country. One of these was Google, which had to stop providing Android support to Huawei. Since then, the company has launched the Huawei Mate 30 series with vanilla Android and its own HMS (Huawei Mobile Services).

Huawei had to attract various developers for its new HMS platform and through its extension, for the App Store dubbed AppGallery. Now, it has been announced that the company is seeing monthly users over 400 million, with more than 55,000 groups of apps being found in the platform. In other words, a notable feat for a newly launched service is already rivaling industry giants, like Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

As of right now, the Huawei Mobile Services are currently available in 170 different countries and regions and is collaborating with local developers from Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Latin America. The company has also announced that it will be launching a “Quick App” service in the AppGallery which will allow users to try out apps without the need of downloading and installing it first. This will help with storage constraints on smartphones with lesser storage capacities.

Huawei hopes that this move will assist global developers in making content for their Play Store contender, AppGallery.

HMS Core is a collection of tools that will help prospective app developers produce apps for the Huawei ecosystem. It includes a complete set of open HMS Apps and HMS Core, HMS Capabilities, HMS Connect, as well IDE tools for development and testing. The launch of HMS Core 4.0 is an important milestone for Huawei in building a global ecosystem for themselves.

Here’s a list of new services that are now integrated with HMS Core 4.0:-

Machine learning services

Text awareness services

Unified services

Code scanning services

Short-range communication services

Panoramic services, security detection services

Dynamic tag manager services

Online fast authentication service

Location services

Fast application services

Digital rights services

Sports health services

User identification services

Developers have long been waiting for these features to finally be incorporated into the HMS Core, and now that they’re finally here we can expect to see a lot more development come out for it. The audience is already there, given how Huawei’s AppGallery already has over 400m monthly users – most of which are in China, of course. It’s still a pretty good incentive.

Huawei has come out with guns blazing when it comes to their HMS Core. According to them, over 1.3 million developers have been signed up so far and over 50,000 apps have been integrated with the HMS Core. The App Gallery also laid claim to 180 billion downloads last year, not a bad number all things considered. With HMS Core 4.0, we can only expect these numbers to go up soon.

The figures are, however, unlikely to trouble Apple and Google, both of which number the content of their respective stores in the millions. For its part, Huawei pointed to the saturation of apps in stores (citing the Google Play Store in particular), and highlighted the difficulty and expense in getting noticed. “We make the alternative market interesting,” a representative said.

The company also presented a new strategy for its consumer devices business over the next few years as it looks to offer a “seamless AI experience”. This new “1+8+N” approach keeps the smartphone (1) at the centre, with related Huawei smart devices such as wearables, tablets and PCs (8) bridging to the wider world of connected products such as televisions, appliances and even cars (N).

Soon, the users of Huawei smartphones will be able to download the AppGallery app store on their devices, no matter which part of the world they reside in. The app store already comes pre-installed with the recently launched P20 and P20 Pro smartphones.

Huawei’s AppGallery comes with five tables, including Featured, Category, Top, Manager, and Me. In the ‘Me’ section, users can control settings and various preferences.

A lot of applications in various categories are aimed at the Asian market, which also makes sense given that the company has a strong presence in the Asian market. Along with apps like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, the user will also get access to several Asia-focused apps such as Amap for navigation, WeChat for instant messaging and QQMusic for entertainment.

In order to install this AppGallery app store, users will have to enable third-party app downloads and then visit wap2.hispace.hicloud.com, where the app will automatically start downloading. The service can be disabled through Settings menu in the Me tab or could be completely uninstalled.

The company says that its digital marketplace is designed to offer the best of Android to consumers by providing an ecosystem full of high-quality apps. Prior to this global launch of its app store, Huawei teamed up with Sygic and a few other mobile developers in October last year to ensure that it has a presentable portfolio of apps.

After launching its flagship smartphones — Huawei P20 and P20 Pro, the China-based company is now gearing up to launch a new smartphone in May this year, which will be focused on the photography and the artificial intelligence technology.
