The much-needed Android Auto design overhaul is finally here, and users can enjoy it on their respective devices. The latest updates make the user interface more user-friendly by centralizing the navigation panel and then showing the call and music cards on the bottom side of the panel. The blank space left at the bottom of the UI gets a Google Assistant. Below, we have discussed the new changes to Android Auto in detail.

Major Changes in Android Auto Redesign

Google is once again revamping its Assistant interface on Android Auto, and this time it extends to voice replies, offering users a refined and polished experience. The new design features a “listening” UI on the bottom bar that replaces app icons, transcribing the user’s speech along the bar. It also overhauls voice replies, displaying them in unused space alongside maps.

Google Assistant Re-Imagined

The updated Google Assistant now greets users with a “Hi, how can I help you?” tag if there’s a moment of silence. As soon as the user starts speaking, the Assistant transcribes the voice commands along the bar. Notably, the replies from the Assistant continue to be read aloud and are not displayed on the screen.

Improved Voice Replies

In addition to the aesthetic overhaul, Google is enhancing the voice reply experience on Android Auto. Voice replies now utilize any unused space on the screen not occupied by maps. The interface includes a “Speak now” prompt in one panel, transcribing the message while providing clear “Cancel” and “Send” buttons. Alongside, the profile picture and name of the recipient, as well as the app icon (e.g., Telegram), are displayed.

AI Auto Reply

Google is aiming high with its generative AI prowess using new AI engines. After bringing the generative AI feature to Chrome, the new features are soon going to enthrall such features in Android Auto. The redesigned Assistant and voice reply features come ahead of Google’s planned support for AI message summaries on Android Auto and more context-aware auto-replies. While a preview video showcased similar design elements, these specific features are not yet live but are anticipated to roll out soon.

Briggs Automotive Company (BAC) is gearing up to unveil a brand-new model of the Mono. The company’s latest Mono iteration retains the single-seater design and is a road-ready race car. So here are all the details.

BAC Mono Announced

The UK-based automobile maker is gearing up to showcase the new Mono during the Monterey Car Week. For those unaware, the Mono race car model was first announced back in 2011 and based on the latest teasers, it appears that the company is sticking with its winning formula. Similar to the original Mono, the new model still remains light and clean, being developed with driver engagement as its focus.

Although, the latest BAC Mono race car does bring an updated design. These new styling changes basically fine-tunes the aerodynamics of the new single-seater. Under the hood, the lightweight vehicle is equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that is made by Ford. It is worth noting that BAC hasn’t simply used an existing Ford engine, rather, the company’s in-house team redesigned the engine specifically for this model. It even features various several modifications.

The changes include forged connecting rods, forged pistons, performance-focused camshafts, and a new induction system. Thanks to this, BAC is capable of outputting 311 horsepower and 31 lb-ft of torque, which can take the Mono from 0 to 97 km/h in just 2.7 seconds. This powerhouse of an engine is housed in a lightweight body of just 570 kilograms.

In recent years, semiconductor shortages have impacted various industries across the globe including the automobile market. And according to an Audi executive, the shortages of chips will likely continue for more years in Germany.

Semiconductor shortage woes continue

A senior Audi manager stated that the chip shortage issue has created a bottleneck in Germany’s automobile industry. He adds that the issue will take years to deal with. For those unaware, the global chip shortage issue first began between 2018 and 2019, quickly engulfing various industries. The dire situation at the time had even led to automobile production being completely halted in certain parts of Europe.

Meanwhile, German carmakers and other electronics manufacturers have been severely impacted with production facing delays. These shortages are being faced across the globe so executives and policymakers are seeking to reduce their reliance on Asian and US chipmakers. At the moment, Germany has brought TSMC (the world’s largest contract chipmaker) over with billions of euros in subsidies. On the other hand, Intel also announced that it will be setting up a semiconductor factory in the region. Apart from Germany, the Taiwanese chipmaker is also expanding in Japan and the US.

But despite billions of dollars in investments, the shortage will still take years to alleviate, as per Renate Vachenauer, head of procurement at Audi. The senior official further added that automobile companies could help to ease these supply issues by using different chips. As of right now, the German market deals in around 8,000 different types of semiconductors for vehicles on the road. She added that “We have to use many levers to stabilize the supply of semiconductors and also stock up on the broker market to some extent.”

South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics has initiated the mass production of UFS 3.1 storage chips for automotive applications, specifically targeting in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems. The new lineup of NAND flash storage chips promises superior data transfer speeds, alongside the industry’s lowest energy consumption, contributing to increased stability. The storage chips will be available in three versions: 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB.

Power Efficiency and Speed: Samsung’s UFS 3.1 Storage Chips

The 256GB model in particular boasts an improvement in power efficiency of 33% compared to its predecessor, achieving up to 2,000Mbps sequential read speeds and up to 700Mbps sequential write speeds. Samsung’s new storage chips are certified for the AEC-Q100 Grade2 standard, assuring stable performance within a wide temperature range, from -40°C to 105°C. This makes them suitable for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Hyunduk Cho, Vice President of the Memory Product Planning Team at Samsung Electronics, expressed the company’s commitment to meet the evolving needs in the automotive semiconductor market and adhere to high ESG standards.

Samsung has received the ASPICE Level 2 certification, signaling the high reliability of its products. The company plans to make the new UFS 3.1 storage chips available to car manufacturers and automotive parts makers by the end of 2023.

Since initiating its automotive memory business in 2015, Samsung has consistently led the industry, introducing various innovative memory solutions including AutoSSD, Auto LPDDR5X, and Auto GDDR6. Steady Production Progress and Upcoming Testing Phases

FAW Fuwei Automotive Parts Co., Ltd., based in Changchun, confirmed their active engagement with Xiaomi’s car project and disclosed that several of their subsidiaries have joined Xiaomi’s car purchasing team. This development indicates significant progress in the collaboration between Xiaomi and its suppliers.

Earlier, a social media leak suggesting a starting price of 149,900 yuan ($20,777) for Xiaomi’s car had sparked discussions. However, Wang Hua, the head of Xiaomi’s public relations, clarified that this information was false. It was traced back to a self-media report from May 2022 that was mistakenly amplified by the Xiaoice virtual assistant.

The production of Xiaomi’s car is reportedly advancing steadily. In May of this year, Lu Weibing, Xiaomi’s partner and president, shared that the car project was progressing smoothly and had entered an accelerated development stage. The car was spotted being tested in the snow with founder Lei Jun back in January this year. More summer and winter testing are scheduled to be conducted this year. According to the plan, the Xiaomi car is scheduled to be officially launched in the first half of 2024.

Xiaomi Group recently released its financial report for the first quarter of 2023, which included updates on its innovative businesses, such as smart electric vehicles. Yu Chengdong further added that Huawei’s aim is to be the first smartphone brand to be fully invested in the automobile market. Back in 2021, the Chinese automobile market was severely impacted by the ongoing chip shortage issue. Meanwhile, a new report has revealed that while China has the largest automobile market, the domestic market only uses 5 percent of local chips.

For those unaware, the automobile industry across the globe took a hit due to supply constraints of semiconductors. Despite electric cars and other new energy vehicles becoming more popular, the lack of chips had caused a decline in the market. As of right now, the automobile production and sales of new energy vehicles market in China is the leader in the industry. However, the domestic market’s self sufficiency rate for auto chips is less than 10 percent.

According to a MyDrivers report, this localization rate is less than 5 percent. In other words, despite having the largest automobile market, especially for NEVs, China only uses around 5 percent of locally made chips for the cars it manufactures. In the automotive industry, the MCU chips are the most in short supply. Notably, this chip is also the one which is basically monopolized by foreign chip manufacturers. The only exception to this is BYD, but apart from this brand, there are no other Chinese automakers that manufacture this chips.

As per an industry insider, the core chipsets for the automobile industry is basically in the “hands of foreign” manufacturers. The source also added that the China market has a a lot of money but only a few players have the patience to invest. Producing chipsets require money and at least 5 to 10 years worth of time.

In a recent investors meeting, BYD revealed its possible sales target for this year along with some other information. Apparently, the company’s undelivered orders have racked up and reached 400,000 units, showcasing strong demand for its vehicles.

The Chinese automobile maker’s cumulative undelivered orders have hit 400,000 vehicles. This marks another rise month on month. Meanwhile, the brand had expected to conservatively expects to sell 1.5 million automobile units this year. Although, the company estimates that this figure might go up to 2 million if the supply chain improves over the next couple of months. According to an ITHome report, the company’s Han DM-i based electric vehicles saw robust demand after its launch.

Furthermore, it is expected that the monthly sales of the Han series will also surpass 30,000 units as well. BYD projects that the current rise of raw marterial prices is slowing down; so, if the cost of lithium carbonate remains at the current price, the supply constraints won’t have a major impact on the sales of its new energy vehicles this year. Thus, BYD is expected a penetration rate of new energy vehicles to cross 35 percent this year, or possibly even hit 40 percent.

Notably, we had previously also reported on the company announcing its first overseas sales of its DM-i based EVs. It had already shipped 500 units to Colombia, which has been a staple region for the brand in recent years. This implies that the estimation also includes the relatively smaller foreign market that it targets along with its strong domestic demand.

While we already know that Xiaomi has been dedicating its resources towards its smart car project, a new report has revealed that one of the company’s subsidiary is also aiming on entering the automobile market as well.

According to a 36kr report, the Chinese tech giant’s Air Purifier maker, SmartMi has plans on makings its own smart cars. Notably, SmartMi is also known as Zhimi Technology in China and is known to making a number of smart home products/appliances. Now, 36kr has reported that Zhimi is planning on expanding its expertise outside of consumer electronic products and into the automobile industry.

Reportedly, Zhimi is also seeking to build a new passenger car as well, with its first model being an SUV, as per sources close to the matter. These sources further added that the new project fro Zhimi will be completely independent from Xiaomi Motors, which is its parent company’s automobile unit. Furthermore, it also appears that the new car project’s management will also be separate from its parent company as well, although, it won’t be surprising to see some form of support from the tech giant. As of right now, its plans seem quite far fetched considering the brand is best known for making air purifiers, air conditioners, and more products along this line.

But it seems that the company is taking this initiative quite seriously as the source added that it is already in contact with a number of car designing based firms for the design of its first vehicle. It would also likely have to partner up with a known automobile brand, since the car market is quite a difficult segment to enter successfully without even mentioning the troubles and vast investment needed for mass production. Volvo is looking to create a new and more interactive way to offer users information while driving their cars. The company is working on a new technology, which could turn the car’s windshield into an AR display.

The Swedish automobile giant has just announced a partnership with an Israel based start up, Spectralics. Together, the two companies will be working on a new technology that will offer people a heads up display (HUD) for a windshield. For those unaware, a HUD is a feature that is seen in military aircrafts like fighter jets in which crucial details like speed, altitude and other crucial information is displayed in front of the pilot. Previously, we had reported on Huawei announcing an AR HUD tech that would turn car windshield’s into a smart screen. And now, it seems that Volvo is also working on a similar system as well.

Spectralics is developing what it calls a multi layered thin combiner (MLTC) film that can embed in the windshield of a car. This would enable the vehicle to turn the whole window or windshield into a large augmented reality based display. As stated above, this HUD display could help offer users a number of crucial information, like pointing out potential hazards or offering details regarding the vehicle’s immediate vicinity.

According to Volvo, the wide field of view offered by the HUD can display “can instill a sense of distance as virtual objects are superimposed onto the real world environment for a safe and immersive experience.” While this technology does sound quite interesting, it is still in early stages of development. Although, since Huawei is already working on this technology and now an established car brand like Volvo is developing this technology as well, it won’t be a surprise if more automakers take note of this system.

Lei Jun, the founder of Xiaomi, has just recently paid a visit to the headquarters of FAW Group in China. The visit from the CEO was apparently for talks related to a new car manufacturing partnership deal for the former’s first car.

According to a Pandaily report (Source), the senior executive of the Chinese tech giant visited the HQ of the known automobile maker in China’s Jilin Province. During his visit to Jilin, Lei Jun event met with the province’s top government officials as well, which includes Jing Junhai, secretary of the Jilin Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China. The reason for this visit, as Lei Jun said, was to strengthen the cooperation with Jilin automotive enterprises and to better solidify an automobile production foundation.

Secretary Jing stated that “Xiaomi has strong R&D and production capacity in the fields of consumer electronics and intelligent manufacturing. Jilin has a good industrial foundation, strong scientific research strength and sufficient talent reserve. Therefore, the cooperation between the two sides in the fields of automobile manufacturing has broad prospects. I hope Xiaomi can strengthen cooperation with FAW as well as Jilin’s auto industry chain.”

In the past, the founder of the company had even reportedly visited the Great Wall Motor’s Research and Development Center in China. Furthermore, the recent move is in line with its plans on setting up a supply chain and relation with various car brands before the production of its own car. Media reports have also stated that Xiaomi Auto aims on releasing a new car each year for the next three years after the first model is launched in 2024. The company also expects to sell 900,000 vehicles in the first three years after its initial release.

Tesla Inc recently announced that it would be supporting the Chinese government’s efforts to standardize the automobile industry in the country on its official Weibo account. The news follows after the nation’s cyberspace administration proposed a draft on automobile data regulation earlier this week.

For those unaware, the new draft was published back on Wednesday and stated that autmobile manufacturers will need to seek customer approval to collect data from driving and would also need to receive permission from regulators when they are needed to send important and private information that is collected to any foreign entities. To put it simply, car makers must get customer permission to acquire user data and government approval to send any sensitive information to any overseas firms.

At the moment, the cyberspace administration is seeking public opinion regarding this new rules. In recent times, auto based firms have been equipping their vehicle offerings with cameras, sensors, and other features that track and records the surroundings of the car. This new rule aims to regulate the use of this information that has been collected. The move from the government is likely to catch up with the growing advancement of technology and data security within the industry.

Meizu Technology has just announced that it is partnering up with an automobile maker. The company will work together with Mini JCW (the brand behind the popular Mini Cooper line of cars) and is developing the Flyme for Cars in vehicle system, which the company teased earlier this week.

Looking at this image poster, it can be observed that the car will have the Meizu 18 Mini JCW printed on the side. The firm believes that the co branding on the car is a notable deal.

Furthermore, the smartphone brand is also working on developing the Flyme for Car system, which is an in vehicle system that would soon be launched. At the moment, not a lot is known regarding the upcoming car system, but the company has assured that the development is steadily moving ahead. Xiaomi is apparently aiming on building its own car. The company is reportedly planning on establishing a project within the next couple of months, and is rapidly working on advancing its automobile manufacturing plans.

According to a 36KR report, the news arrives from investors close to the the company’s CEO and Founder, Lei Jun, who is also rumored to head the Chinese tech giant’s car project. As per the report, the company is expected to launch cars that would focus on the mid to high end market. These cars will also take advantage of the brand’s strong portfolio of technology. Previously, we had covered news that the smartphone maker is making a car, but an official statement clarified that this is not the case.

Furthermore, the report adds that the CEO had already met with Chinese automobile maker’s, NIO, founder as well to consult on building a car. A source familiar with the matter added that the project could start as “soon as this month or next month.” It was also stated that the company’s co founder and Vice President, Wang Chuan, will be in charge of Xiaomi’s car manufacturing.

Additionally, the consumer electronics maker has reportedly plans on contracting with local automobile makers as well. This includes the likes of BYD and other car manufacturers. Volvo Cars will temporarily be halting or adjusting its production in China and the US. The primary reason for this move is due to the company being affected by the chip shortage issue that has affected various industries across the globe.

According to a YahooNews report, the automobile maker made the announcement of adjusting or halting production earlier this week for China and the United States. As per the official statement, “We expect the situation to become critical during the second quarter and have therefore decided to take measures to minimize the impact on production while working daily to improve the situation. Volvo Cars will temporarily stop or adjust production in some of its car factories (in the United States and China) during the month of March.”

The company further added that it has yet to be affected or lose volumes due to the global chip shortage. Although, it said that there was a “big risk,” which could hit during the first quarter of this year. Notably, the shortages in semiconductors has affected the automobile industry, with various car makers competing with the consumer electronic industry for chip supplies.

A new report has suggested that the electric vehicle sales in China are expected to rise by more than 50 percent, despite seeing a modest sales a year ago. The news arrives as the Chinese market saw just an 8 percent growth year on year in 2020, while the global market saw a surge of 39 percent in the same period.

According to a Canalys report, the Chinese market alone saw 1.3 million electric vehicles being shipped last year. The impressive sales figure is likely due to the Chinese government’s actions in supporting the market, although, recent EV related policy changes have also had car makers struggle to maintain and build a sales momentum in the region. As per Chris Jones, Canalys Chief Analyst, “The Chinese RV market in 2020 was all about two vehicles: the made in China Tesla Model 3, the market leader in the first half of 2020, and the Hongguang Mini EV from the SGMW joint venture.”

Notably, the 1.3 million EVs sold in China last year also represent 41 percent of global EV sales as well, which is just behind the 42 percent of the global sales from Europe. Meanwhile, the US also represented 2.4 percent of the overall sales. Jones further added that “There is an excellent network of standardized public EV chargers in China, good government support and now a return to strong consumer demand.”

Canalys projects that in 2021, the Chinese market would ship 1.9 million EVs, marking a 51 percent surge in the local market and a 9 percent growth of EV’s market in the overall automobile market in China. Sandy Fitzpatrick, VP at Canalys said that “With a share of just 6.3% of all passenger cars sold in China in 2020, EVs have many years of growth ahead. But with Tesla expanding its portfolio in Chihna, it will be hard for competitors offering premium EVs to gain market share.

The automobile industry is expected to be impacted by the chip shortages in the first quarter of this year. A new report has revealed that the production of nearly 1 million vehicles could be affected due to the shortages.

According to a Reuters report, IHS Markit, a known data firm, believes that the the recent supply issue regarding semiconductors could affect the production of automobiles. As of 3rd February 2021, the firm estimated that the issue could impact over 672,000 vehicles through 30th March 2021. Although, the report also states that it is likely that the majority of the volume can be recovered in the remainder of 2021.

For those unaware, the global chip supply is facing a shortage at the moment. Major chip makers are currently strained with their production lines running at full capacity. While the shortage isn’t expected to last for the entire year, various industries will likely be affected in the first quarter of this year. Previously, we had reported on known equipment maker AMSL’s VP stating that the surge in demand for chips has led to supply dislocations and a decline in car production.

For those unaware, chip shortages have forced several carmakers to review downwards their production benchmarks even in the face of rising demand for cars globally. Similarly, the Chinese government has even lobbied local chip makers too ramp up the supply to China based car makers as well, to boost automobile production in the region. This is indicative of the issue that has impacted the industry in the global scale.

Germany has been facing a shortage of auto chip supply and has asked Taiwan to urge its local manufacturers to help in easing this issue. Apparently, the shortage of semiconductor chips has affected the former’s automobile industry.

According to a Reuters report, the shortage has hampered the economic recovery of Germany after the Coronavirus pandemic. At the moment, automobile manufacturers across the globe have been shutting down their assembly lines due to issues with the delivery of semiconductors. A few of the cases seem to have stemmed from the actions of the former US President Donald Trump’s administration, and their efforts against the Chinese chip factories.

As per the report, the shortages have affected automobile giants like Volkswagen, Ford Motors, Toyota Motor Corp, Nissan Motor, Fiat Chrysler, and even other car manufacturers as well. In a letter, the German Economy Minister, Peter Altmaier asked his Taiwanese counterpart Wang Mei-hua regarding this issue. The letter was to address the current issue that also included the Taiwan Semiconductor Company (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, in the talks.

For those unaware, TSMC is also one of Germany’s largest chip supplier. Altmaier stated that “I would be pleased if you could take on this matter and underline the importance of additional semiconductor capacities for the German automotive industry to TSMC.” The letter aims at getting additional capacities at TSMC to deliver semiconductors in both the short and medium terms. Furthermore, the German automobile is already in talks with TSMC about raising deliveries, which have been “very constructive” so far.

Displays used in automobiles have seen a surge in shipments in 2020. Last year, the automobile industry saw an increase in demand for displays that grew by 22 percent year on year.

According to TheElec report, new market research from Omdia has pointed out that up to 351 million units of automotive displays that were sized 9 inch or above were shipped during this period. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the demand had shrunk in the first half but recovered in the second half of the year. This growth in display demand was primarily carried by the center stack display (CDS), which is generally the control hub in a vehicle.

Back in 2020, the CSD shipments rose by 47 percent alone in comparison to 2019. Furthermore, this category also accounted for around 40 percent of the automotive display market in 2019 but has since risen to over 50 percent in 2020. In the final quarter of last year, CSD alone accounted for 56.5 percent of all automotive displays. Similarly, ICD (instrument cluster display) was also responsible for the growth, which also saw a rise of 11 percent and accounted for about 30 percent of the automotive display demand.

Furthermore, the report also found that only over 10 percent of all displays were automotive screens and that the increase in CSD and ICD shipments were thanks to the rise in autonomous driving and other safety features. Notably, 12.3 inch panels were the most popular size in this category of displays. The market research also predicts that the automotive display market will further recover in the second half of 2021.

NIO has recently launched a mass production electric car with what appears to be the longest driving range in the EV market. This raises the competition in China, especially against the major EV maker Tesla. 

According to an SCMP report, the Standard Edition of NIO’s ET7 electric car offers a driving range of 500 kilometers through its 70 kilowatt hour battery pack. This car costs 448,000 Yuan (roughly 69,000 US Dollars) and offers about 7 percent farther range than Tesla’s Shanghai made Model 3 EV that costs 249,00 Yuan after subsidy (roughly 38,000 US Dollars).

Although, the real highlight of NIO is its Premiere Edition of the ET7 that can reach up to 700 kilometers from its 100kWH battery pack. This model costs 536,000 Yuan (roughly 82,000 US Dollars). Notably, the Tesla rival has also launched a Extended Edition, which offers a claimed range of 1,000 kilometers on a single charge from its 150kWH battery pack. Unfortunately, the exact price of the Extended Edition is unknown at the moment.

As per the founder and chief, William Li Bin, “We will continuously invest in products and technologies, and speed up the development of our service network, thereby bringing a better experience of smart electric vehicles to users.” This arrives as the competition in the Chinese electric vehicle market is rising with almost 200 carmakers, including start ups are racing to launch their offerings in the market. Reports state that one in every five cars will be a non fossil fuel powered vehicle by the year 2025 in China, which is one of the world’s largest EV market.

Known Apple supplier Foxconn Technology Group is in talks to invest in a Chinese electric vehicle start up called Byton. The deal would have the Taiwanese company expand its horizons into the automobile industry over just being an iPhone assembler.

According to an SCMP report, Foxconn is planning on investing somewhere around 200 million US Dollars into the potential Tesla rival and also aims to start mass production of the Byton M-Byte by the first quarter of 2022, as per a source close to the matter. At the moment, this news has still not been made public, but we might see it being announced as early as Monday as per the source.

The deal for Byton could be a major opportunity if the news is true since it is still struggling to produce its first vehicle, despite having unveiled the M-Byte concept car being revealed several years ago. Furthermore, the Apple supplier is also looking in talks with other Chinese electric car makers for potential partnerships as well, as per another person familiar with the matter. Unfortunately, Foxconn has yet to respond to this news for now, while Byton has declined to comment.

The move from Foxconn also signifies its diversification from just being a major supplier in Apple’s supply chain. Similarly, other tech companies have also been increasing their investments towards the development of next gen cars, especially electric vehicles, and related technologies. An example being Huawei, which is developing technology that will be housed within smart cars, under its HiCar branding.

According to the senior official, “With its advanced 5G technology the company is set to reduce the cost of radar sensors to USD 100 in the future.” At the moment, the average price for the LiDAR sensors hovers around the 400 to 500 US Dollar price range. Thus, Huawei’s investment in the field could help the Chinese brand establish a more prominent role in the intelligent vehicle industry.

Foxconn Technology Group is a well known name in the smartphone industry. The Taiwanese giant is a primary supplier of Apple for its iPhones and by its extension one of the world’s largest contract smartphone manufacturers. However, it seems that the electronics company isn’t solely based around smartphones as it is forming a joint venture with Fiat Chrysler (the automobile giant) to build electric cars in China.

The filing of this sizable undertaking has been filed in China’s Market Observation Post System (MOPS), which details that both companies own 50 percent of the venture equally. The main objective of this joint venture is to produce electric vehicles in China and start an IOV. This stands for Internet of Vehicles (after IoT or Internet of Things devices) as coined by the Foxconn’s parent company.

Initially, Fiat Chrysler and Foxconn will aim to mass produce electric vehicles in China and will expand to foreign markets after the foundation is laid in the Southeast Asian country. This seems like a very practical move from an automobile industry standpoint as China is the largest electric vehicle market in the world. Notably, the filing also states that the joint venture aims to develop electric vehicles from scratch. In other words, they are not planning on simply making the existing Fiat offerings into electric versions.

The collaboration with Foxconn will also help Fiat gain a solid footing in the Chinese market. Previously, the contract smartphone manufacturer has invested in ventures dealing with electric vehicles, but this will be the first as the company will actually develop and manufacture its own products. A good example of past investment is Byton, an electric vehicle startup. The electric SUV which is expected to be ready for mass production by 2021 is expected to be BMW’s first 5G capable vehicle model. Furthermore, Klaus Fröhlich (engineering head of BMW) has stated that the advancement in networking capabilities will soon be featured in the entire lineup that the company offers in early 2020. Historically, Turkey has been largely dependent on foreign automobile manufacturers. However, recently the country has made a step away from reliance and to independence in the industry. TOGG which is a collaboration of various Turkish companies has just unveiled an electric crossover SUV that is the country’s first completely indigenous car.

Notably, the only foreign impact on the vehicle is the Italian design firm Pininfarina so it is safe to still call it homegrown. The vehicle isn’t simply an electric vehicle as its base versions arrives with a singe 200 horsepower rear-axle moto. This means that the car is capable of 0-60MPH in about 7.6 seconds, which is commendable. On the other hand, its most beefed up version goe up to a 400 horsepower dual motor setup that can achieve o-62MPH in 4.8 seconds flat.

The operational range of the TOGG EV SUV’s battery is about 300 miles (482 kilometres) that is capable of reaching an 80 percent charge in just 30 minutes. It achieves this with a (rough estimate) 150kW charger. The car features a bunch of useful functions and follows a futuristic and tech-savvy design philosophy. It offers a “Sow Traffic Pilot” that will offer Level 2 semi-autonomous that could go with Level 3 autonomy and higher.

The Turkish EV SUV’s interior controls are primarily digital carry a Porsche style passenger display. It is also claimed to have a holographic assistant that will utilize eye-tracking to better provide information so the driver need not take his eyes off the road. The vehicle is also connected to the internet so it will link the SUV to the grid and deliver OTA updates periodically.

Thus, it might be a good start for the country, but one that might not hit it off with the masses.

The report says that the company’s first car that will soon be showcased is developed in tandem with Dongfeng Motor, a state-owned automobile manufacturer headquartered in Wuhan, China.

The automobile will feature in-vehicle communications, support for the fifth-generation wireless network and cloud functions. It will include information query functions, vehicle management, traffic scheduling, as well as equipment management.

Huawei and Dongfeng Motor had penned a 3 billion Yuan (approximately $446 million) deal with the local authorities in Xiangyang, earlier this month in order to develop a smart car, logistics, and transportation cloud platforms in efforts towards 5G-powered autonomous driving vehicles.

During the signing ceremony for the Xiangyang government deal, a model of a mini-bus was showcased. However, there are no specific details available regarding the first-ever Huawei car, which could be unveiled later this month at the Shanghai Auto Show.
