OPPO has just announced its latest upper mid-range smartphone in India, the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G. It is the first Dimensity 1000+ smartphone in India and comes with premium features such as a 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging, a beautiful curved 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display, and a special Reno Glow matte design.

OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G Design

OPPO is focused on bringing a sleek and lightweight design on the new Reno5 Pro 5G. The phone comes in a super thin 7.6mm body and weighs only 173 grams, which makes it one of the lightest 5G smartphones in the market. The front features a 6.5-inch 3D curved Super AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate and 180Hz touch sampling rate. The display is rated for HDR10+ certification and is Amazon Prime and Netflix HD certified.

One of the biggest highlights of the Reno5 Pro 5G is the Reno Glow texture at the back. This adds a sparkly texture to the back of the device but features a matte finish ensuring that it’s not a fingerprint magnet. The Astral Blue variant shifts its color from blue to purple at different angles. There’s a Starry Black color variant as well.

OPPO also adds that its new phone brings a 360-degree surround antenna design which will select the appropriate antenna group based on how you are holding the device. This will ensure that there’s always a stable network connection without any interference.

OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G Specs

Inside, the Reno5 Pro 5G comes with the same Dimensity 1000+ processor, similar to its Chinese variant. The Dimensity 1000+ features an integrated 5G modem and comes with 4 big Cortex A77 cores for flagship-level performance along with the Mali-G77 GPU. MediaTek claims its Dimensity chip is the world’s lowest power-consuming 5G chip in the market right now. As for RAM and ROM variants, the Reno5 Pro starts with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of ROM.

Camera

Coming to its camera specs, the new OPPO device features a quad-camera setup at the back. This includes a 64MP primary sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide angle shooter, 2MP Macro and depth sensors, respectively. Unfortunately, there’s no telephoto sensor on the Reno5 Pro 5G.

However, OPPO is leveraging its new FDF Portrait Video system to improve the videography experience on its new model. We have already explained how the FDF Portrait System works in an earlier article. The system basically takes advantage of OPPO’s imaging algorithms to combine Live HDR and Ultra Night Video and offer a better video shooting experience on the Reno5 Pro. OPPO claims that the new model is able to capture brighter, more colorful, and less noisy videos, even at night.

As for software, the Reno5 Pro 5G runs on the new ColorOS 11.1 based on Android 11.

Battery

The OPPO Reno5 Pro comes with a fast 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charging technology which promises 100% charging of its 4350mAh battery in just 30 minutes. OPPO claims that a mere 5 minutes of charging will top up the phone for an additional 4 hours of video playback.

The OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G starts at Rs. 35,990 (~$491) in India for its 8GB RAM and 128GB variant. The company is also offering cashback up to 10% to HDFC and ICICI card users along with exclusive offers for existing OPPO users.

After becoming independent from Huawei, Honor is planning to make 100 million smartphones next year. It has already started negotiations with Qualcomm, MediaTek to procure their chips. As a head start, the company is likely to unveil a product very soon and it could be Honor V40. Amidst a lot of leaks about the device, a leak now says it will support 45W wireless charging.

A user on Weibo(@鹏鹏君驾到) has leaked an alleged rear design of Honor’s wireless charger that could launch alongside Honor V40. The design shows a hemisphere design with an ‘Honor’ Logo at the bottom. There are a vertical array of slots and two arched cutouts possibly for the heat dissipation grille and rubber bush respectively.

There is a dot above the design and it could be an LED indicator. The rear of the design also has specifications. Accordingly, it is registered under Honor Terminal Co Ltd.,(English Translated). Interestingly, the specs have the name ‘Vertical Wireless Charger’ with a max output of 45W. The charger supports a USB-C port and draws input in the range of 5V-20V at 6A(max).

Further, the user says(via ITHome) that this charger will support the 45W which should also be the designation of the upcoming Honor V40. If we call, a recent report suggests that Honor V40 will have charging support(HW-110600C0x) of up to 66W. The rated speed configs are 5V at 2A, 10V at 4A, and 11V at 6A out of which the 10V at 4A(40W) could be the wireless charging designation.

In any case, if this is true, Honor should launch a new Wireless charger alongside the Honor V40 in mid-January of 2021. The device with codename(YOK-AN10) has already appeared on China’s MIIT and 3C certifications. Further, a design leak reveals that it sports a dual punch-hole curved display and circular camera layout inspired by a Watch.

The Honor V40 is expected to feature a 6.7-inch FHD+ 120Hz AMOLED display, MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000+ SoC, 50MP Sony IMX700 RYYB sensor, and more. Either way, Honor hasn’t confirmed anything yet, and hence, let’s wait for more leaks in the coming days.

A day after the China launch, OPPO India executive hinted that the Reno5 Pro could come to India soon. While the official confirmation is still awaited, an Indian tipster further hints that the Chinese variant could land unaltered in the country.

Mukul Sharma has posted a tweet asking users to guess the possible chipset on the Reno5 Pro smartphone. He has indirectly confirmed the device is indeed is launching in India soon. Also, the voting on the chipset emphasizing more on the MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ variant hints that OPPO might launch it unchanged from China in India.

However, that hasn’t been the case in the past. Previously, OPPO Reno4 Pro came with Snapdragon 720G in India but the Chinese variant has Snapdragon 765G SoC. Similarly, the Reno3 Pro has the same SoC in China but the Indian variant has an inferior Helio P95 chipset.

It shares similar camera specs with the non-Pro variant. Accordingly, the device features a 64MP f/1.7 main lens, 8MP ultra-wide, and two 2MP sensors. Upfront, you get a 32MP selfie shooter.

Other specifications include a 4,350mAh battery with the 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charging, in-display fingerprint sensor, ColorOS 11 based on Android 11 out of the box, dual-SIM 5G, NFC, GPS for connectivity.

Honor V40 series was earlier rumored to launch in December. However, leaks recently said the series has been cut down to one device(Honor V40) after failing to feature a Kirin 9000 SoC. Currently, the device is currently expected to debut in January. Now, a tipster says it has got MIIT certification.

As Digital Chat Station reports(via ITHome), a device with a model number YOK-AN10 appears on China’s MIIT certification website. The listing shows the applicant as Glory Terminal Co Ltd.,(Translated) which refers to Honor. Further, the listing also confirms that the device will be a 5G device.

Now, if we recall, the tipster revealed the codename of the upcoming Honor smartphone last week. According to him, Honor V40 will have the codename YORK and model number YOK-AN10. Hence, the above listing and tipster’s info suggests that the device is most likely the V40 from Honor. Further, he also says that the Honor V40 will support 66W fast charging.

Yesterday, OPPO launched the next iteration of Reno smartphones, the Reno5 series in China. Today, an OPPO India executive has started teasing the launch of the Reno5 in India.

As spotted by MySmartPrice, Tasleem Arif, Vice President, and Head of OPPO R&D India has posted a tweet. He says the company recently revealed a smartphone that can shoot great videos. To quote about the photography and video, the Reno5 5G and Reno5 Pro 5G have a 64MP camera and a host of features live HDR, EIS(not OIS), bokeh videos, etc.

He further hints at the arrival of the Global Product in India. If you recall, the Reno5 series Global edition tipped to arrive both as 5G and 4G versions. Leaks say that the Reno5 Pro 5G version will have the Snapdragon 765G and the Reno5 4G version will retain the SoC of its predecessor, the Reno4 Global variant.

The OPPO Reno5 5G in China features a 6.43-inch OLED FHD+ 90Hz display, Snapdragon 765G SoC, 8/12GB RAM, 128/256GB UFS 2.1 storage, quad rear camera with 64MP f/1.7 main lens, 8MP ultra-wide, and two 2MP sensors, 32MP selfie shooter. The device has a 4,300mAh battery and supports 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charging.

The Reno5 Pro 5G has a 6.55-inch curved OLED 90Hz display, MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ SoC, same cameras as the Reno5, 4,350mAh battery with the 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charging. Both the devices run ColorOS 11 based on Android 11 out of the box.

realme CEO Madhav Sheth has already hinted at the arrival of the realme X7 series smartphones to India. Following it, the X7 Pro 5G has hit India’s BIS certification along with others like NBTC, NCC hinting at a Global launch. Now, Anku Jain, MD, MediaTek India, hints that the X7 series might be the only Dimensity SoC Powered devices for India in 2020.

Anku Jain has given an exclusive interview to TechRadar. In that, he has brushed upon topics like MediaTek’s evolution, Dimensity SoCs, the future of 5G in India, and more. Regarding Dimensity SoCs, he says that the company is getting very good traction in China. This is evident with its staggering 61.2% YoY surge in September revenue report.

However, the Dimensity SoCs haven’t managed to break the barriers elsewhere. The company only recently announced the MediaTek Dimensity 1000C 5G SoC in the United States. Besides, Anku Jain notes that the company requires OEM partners’ support for Dimensity SoCs to flourish in countries like India. The reason for the delay of Dimensity SoCs is reportedly due to the delay in 5G rollout, perception of the companies, and their outlook on the market.

That said, regarding the Dimensity partnerships, he says the company is working with a lot of partners. And expects to see few phones before 2020 ends. In fact, when asked about the realme X7 Pro topic, he has hinted at a few things here. He expects the company’s existing 4G partners like Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo. And realme to launch the devices soon.

However, when asked if we would see other brands bring Dimensity SoCs this year, he hints that it might happen only in 2021. This suggests that the realme X7 series, if they launch as expected in December, will be the only smartphones in India with Dimensity SoC this year. Accordingly, realme X7 5G features Dimensity 800U SoC while the X7 Pro 5G has Dimensity 1000+. Anyway, it looks like realme is going to pull the trigger for the wave of Dimensity-powered devices in India.

Huawei is expected to announce the Nova 8 series next quarter, specifically by the end of the year according to a leak from early this month. The same source revealed the chipset and price of one of the models, the Nova 8 SE. He has now disclosed the chipsets and price tags of the other two models in the series which will launch as the Nova 8 and Nova 8 Pro.

According to the post made on Weibo, the leaker, Really Asen Jun, revealed that the Huawei Nova 8 will be powered by the Dimensity 820 processor. The post reveals that the chipset is currently exclusive to Redmi but the exclusivity period ends in December. Other details of the Nova 8 mentioned include a 90Hz OLED display that will be supplied by Visionox or Tianma and a starting price of ¥3299 (~$484).

For the Nova 8 Pro, the phone is said to be powered by the Dimensity 1000+. It will also have an OLED display but with a 120Hz refresh rate. The supplier for the display will be either Visionox or Tianma. With respect to price, the Nova 8 Pro will have a starting price of ¥3999 (~$587).

It is no surprise that Huawei’s upcoming Nova 8 phones are powered by MediaTek processors, unlike their predecessors that are powered by Kirin chipsets. The US ban has stifled Huawei’s HiSilicon chip business.

MediaTek made a comeback into the high-end and mid-range smartphone chipset segment last year with the introduction of Dimensity 5G chips. But for some unknown reasons, handsets with these SoCs have remained exclusive to China for a very long time. Thankfully, they are now confirmed by the company to debut in global markets sometime in Q3 2020 (current quarter).

The first-ever Dimensity series chipset by MediaTek is Dimensity 1000. But there is not a single smartphone in the world with this chip. Instead, we have got a device powered by Dimensity 1000L (OPPO Reno3 5G) and Dimensity 1000+ (iQOO Z1 5G) respectively. These two chips are toned-down and beefed-up models of the standard Dimensity 1000, which is yet to see the light of the day.

Further, the Taiwanese chipmaker continued to debut a number of Dimensity mid-range 5G chipsets such as Dimensty 800, Dimensity 820, and Dimensity 720. These chips power some of the cheapest 5G smartphones available in the Chinese market.

But as mentioned in the beginning, none of them is available outside China. However, we might soon see them powering smartphones sold in global markets. MediaTek itself confirmed in its Q2 2020 earning call.

We think the LG Velvet series handset spotted on Google Play Console with Dimensity 800 could be the first-ever MediaTek Dimensity 5G smartphone for international markets. That’s not all, we may also witness the launch of already available Chinese Dimensity handsets in global markets.

Apart from Huawei and Samsung that have their own independent chipset foundries, all other mobile phone manufacturers rely mostly on Qualcomm and MediaTek for their chip supplies. Before the 5G era, MediaTek was experiencing some difficulties but since 5G started gaining traction, the Taiwanese fabless chip maker has experienced a rebound.

Between April and now, some of the new smartphones packing a MediaTek SoC includes the OPPO A92s, iQOO Z1, Huawei Enjoy 20 Pro, ZTE AXON 11 SE, Redmi 10X series and many several others. The majority of the models have equipped with a Dimensity series 5G chips.

According to latest media reports, MediaTek will launch a new generation of 5G flagship mobile platform under the Dimensity series. The flagship processor will be unveiled in the second quarter of next year. The flagship chipset will reportedly be called Dimensity 2000, taking a cue from the Dimensity 1000 series. However, it will be built on a 5nm process, unlike the Dimensity 1000 series which utilised a 7nm silicon. There will also be a significant improvement in its performance.

At present, MediaTek has successively launched Dimensity 1000 series, Dimensity 800 and 700 series processors, occupying a key position in mid-to-high-end 5G mobile phones market. Just a few days back, the Dimensity 720 chipset was announced. Further, the company is rumoured to be working on the Dimensity 600 series as well as a Dimensity 400 series targeted at entry-level 5G smartphones, enabling cheap 5G phones.

Yesterday, we reported that the Huawei Mate 40 series may feature a different chipset, most probably one of MediaTek’s processors, in markets outside China. Today, a leaker has revealed what may be the spec sheet of the Honor V40 series and it shows the lineup will be powered by the Dimensity 1000+ processor.

Shared on Weibo by @Really Assen, the Honor V40 series will not feature Kirin chipsets but MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000+ processor. He also states that the Honor V40 Pro+ may be the first of the series that will be announced. Below are the alleged specifications and prices of the series:

As you can see, while all three phones have the same processor and should offer the same performance, there are still some significant differences. The Pro versions will have curved AMOLED displays with two holes for their dual selfie cameras.

All three phones will also have a high refresh rate but that of the Honor V40 Pro+ will be higher. The spec sheet also shows that all three phones will support wireless charging which is pretty nice.

As a reminder, these specifications are speculations, so we advise you to take them with a grain of salt.

In May, MediaTek announced the Dimensity 1000+ 5G as an improved version of the Dimensity 1000 SoC. The iQOO Z1 that debuted in the same month is the first phone to feature the Dimensity 1000+ 5G. It arrived with an enticing starting price of 2,198 Yuan. According to a tipster from China, Xiaomi or Redmi will be releasing a smartphone powered by the Dimensity 1000+ SoC.

The tipster did not share any details on the specs of the Xiaomi / Redmi phone that is expected to arrive with the Dimensity 1000+ SoC. Considering that the Snapdragon 865 powered Redmi K30 Pro’s price has reached as low as 2,197 Yuan (~$310) for the 618 sales in China, the Dimensity 1000+ SoC powered Xiaomi / Redmi phone may cost around 2,000 Yuan (~$282).

The Dimensity 1000+ comes with four CortexA-A77 CPU cores working at up to 2.6GHz and four power-efficient Cortex-A55 CPU cores ticking at up to 2GHz. For graphics, it features Mali-G77 MC9 GPU. The 7nm chipset support Full HD+ resolution with up to 144Hz refresh rate. It is equipped with the new MiraVision image quality engine. It is the only chip in the industry that carries support for 5G + 5G dual SIM card dual standby.

The same tipster has previously claimed that Xiaomi is working on a new smartphone with a 144Hz punch-hole display. It could be the forthcoming Dimensity 1000+ SoC powered phone from the brand. The handset may break cover at some point in July.

Xiaomi or Redmi is yet to confirm the existence of its Dimensity 1000+ SoC powered handset. The rumor mill is expected to reveal more information on it in the coming days.

Today, the Chinese firm announced another flagship phone called iQOO Z1 5G. The major highlight of the Z1 is that it is the world’s first smartphone powered by the Dimensity 1000+ SoC by MediaTek. Some of the other attractions of the smartphone include 144Hz refresh rate screen, big battery with fast charging support and 48-megapixel triple camera setup. The 5G-enabled flagship phone comes with an irresistible starting price of 2,198 Yuan (~$309).

iQOO Z1 5G specifications

The iQOO Z1 5G has a 6.57-inch IPS LCD screen with a punch-hole at the upper-right corner. The HDR10 complaint display supports DCI-P3 color gamut and produces a full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels along with a refresh rate of up to 144Hz. The smartphone boots with iQOO UI 1.0 flavored Android 10 OS. iQOO claims that more than 100,000 apps are optimized to work with 144Hz display. Even some of the games have been optimized to support the highest refresh rate on the device. For enhanced gaming experience, the Z1 offers users with five customized sound effects.

The iQOO Z1 5G is driven by the Dimensity 1000+ that went official earlier this month. The 7nm chipset is an updated version of the Dimensity 1000 SoC that was announced back in November 2019. The octa-core processor comprises of four Cortex-A77 CPU cores and four Cortex-A55 cores along with Mali-G77 MP graphics. The new chipset brings support for 5G connectivity on both SIM slots of the iQOO Z1. As far as AnTuTu scores are concerned, the Z1 recorded 536,683 points on the benchmarking platform.

The iQOO Z1 is equipped with up to 8 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 3.1 storage of up to 256 GB. The handset does not feature a microSD card slot. The super liquid-cooled heat dissipation system can reduce the internal temperature of the device by up to 10 degrees celsius.

The iQOO Z1 5G has a frontal shooter of 16-megapixel. The Chinese firm will be also selling silicone protective case and game controller for Z1 buyers. They are priced at 49 Yuan (~$7) and 199 Yuan (~$28). The Chinese firm also announced 299 Yuan (~$42) worth iQOO wireless sports headphones.

There is no word on the availability of the iQOO Z1 outside in China. The pre-sale of the smartphone begins from this afternoon through Vivo China’s online store in the home market. Other Chinese retailers will carry out the pre-sales of the Z1 from May 25. The first sale of the phone will be carried out on June 1 in China.

Earlier this month, MediaTek announced an upgraded version of its Dimensity 1000 processor. The new chipset is called the Dimensity 1000+ and will appear first in the upcoming iQOO Z1 phone. Last week, iQOO shared the AnTuTu result of the device which scored over 530,000 points. Today, the Geekbench result have surfaced.

There are multiple results on Geekbench but the result with the highest score shows the device scored 784 points in the single-core test and 3085 points in the multi-core test. The benchmark result also shows the iQOO Z1 (vivo V1986A) has 8GB of RAM and runs Android 10.

If you are wondering how the chipset fares compared to other flagship processors such as the Kirin 990 5G and the Snapdragon 865, below are the benchmark results for two sample devices – the Mate 30 Pro 5G (Kirin 990 5G) and the Motorola Edge+ (Snapdragon 865).

While the Dimensity 1000+ does hold its own against the Kirin 990 5G, its scores, most especially the single-core score pales against that of the Snapdragon 865. Nevertheless, MediaTek’s most-powerful chipset does pack some punch and should be able to handle whatever task you throw at it.

The iQOO Z1 will have a display with a 144Hz refresh rate and a punch-hole. It will also have support for 44W fast charging and a 4500mAh battery capacity. The device launches on Tuesday, May 19, and is expected to be priced at ¥2498 (~$352) for the 6GB RAM + 128GB version.

Yesterday, the company revealed its rear design and color variants. Today, the Chinese firm released two new posters on Weibo to confirm the battery size and charging capabilities of the iQOO Z1.

The iQOO Z1 will be coming with a large battery of 4,500mAh capacity and it will carry support for 44W ultra-fast flash charge technology. The iQOO Neo3 smartphone that went official last month also featured the same-sized battery and the same fast charging technology.

The second poster once again confirms the presence of the all-new MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ chipset inside the device. The new SoC that brings support for 144Hz is an enhanced version of the Dimensity 1000 chipset that was unveiled in November last year. The poster also reveals the bottom edge of the smartphone has a 3.5mm audio jack, a USB-C, a microphone, and a speaker grille.

In comparison, the iQOO Neo3 came with a Full HD+ 6.57-inch IPS LCD display with up to 144Hz refresh rate support. The Snapdragon 865 mobile platform powered device came with a frontal shooter of 16-megapixel and a 48-megapixel + 8-megapixel + 2-megapixel triple camera setup. The iQOO Neo3 starts at 2,698 Yuan (~$380) in China. The iQOO Z1’s base model may feature 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage and it is likely to carry a price tag of 2,498 Yuan (~$352).

On May 19, Vivo’s sub-brand iQOO will take off covers from the iQOO Z1 smartphone. The major highlight of the smartphone is that it will be equipped with the recently unveiled Dimensity 1000+ flagship chipset. Today, the Chinese shared the renders of the iQOO Z1 to reveal its rear design.

As can be seen in the new renders, the iQOO Z1 will be available in at least two color variants. The images show that the smartphone is fitted with a rectangle-shaped camera housing at the top-left corner of its back panel. It houses an LED flash and three cameras. The right edge of the device has a volume rocker and a side-mounted fingerprint reader. The rear appearance of the device resembles the iQOO Neo3 phone that went official last month.

It is speculated that iQOO will be soon launching a smartphone called iQOO Z1. Except for Huawei and Honor branded phones, all Android flagship phones that have debuted this year have featured Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 mobile platform. What’s different about the iQOO Z1 is that it is likely to arrive with the Dimensity 1000+ SoC that was recently announced by MediaTek. A trustworthy leakster from China has shared two images to give the first look at the iQOO Z1.

As can be seen in the first image, the alleged iQOO Z1 phone has a round-shaped cutout at the upper-right corner for the front-facing camera. After the iQOO 3 and iQOO Neo3, the iQOO Z1 could be the first phone from the company to sport a punch-hole display.

The iQOO Z1 is expected to offer a high screen space as its display is surrounded by slim bezels on three sides. The bottom bezel of the device is a bit thick. The right side of the phone seems to be fitted with a volume rocker and a power button that is embedded with a fingerprint sensor.

Today, MediaTek announced the Dimensity 1000+, a processor that improves upon the Dimensity 1000. The launch of the new processor is weird seeing as the Dimensity 1000 itself is yet to appear in a phone. If you are curious as to what is different between the two processors, this post should help you with that.

The Dimensity 1000+ actually doesn’t differ from the Dimensity 1000 in areas such as CPU and GPU configuration and their respective clockspeeds. The differences are actually in additional features baked into already existing technologies. The table below is a comparison of the two processors:

Dimensity 1000 versus Dimensity 1000+

As you can see above, the Dimensity 1000+ brings additional benefits in areas such as the modem with its new UltraSave feature that helps with battery conservation. MediaTek’s MiraVision Engine also brings some improved benefits such as better HDR and SDR to HDR conversion.

Another key addition is the support for displays with a 144Hz refresh rate. iQOO already announced that it will launch a phone powered by the new Dimensity 1000+ chipset. The manufacturer’s latest device is the iQOO Neo 3 which has a 144Hz refresh rate but is powered by a Snapdragon 865 processor. We presume this upcoming device will also have a 144Hz refresh rate since the Dimensity 1000 supports it.

With the Dimennisty 1000+, there is no need for the Dimensity 1000 anymore

One question that the launch of the Dimensity 1000+ brings up is if it is necessary for the Dimensity 1000 to continue to exist. To be honest, we think not.

There is yet to be a single commercially-available phone powered by the Dimensity 1000 which was announced back in November 2019 and scheduled to appear in devices in Q1 2020. Now that the Dimensity 1000+ brings some key improvements over it, it may be wise for MediaTek to forget about the Dimensity 1000.

We do not know how much MediaTek is charging manufacturers for the new chipset but if the margin is pretty small, keeping both processors may cannibalize sales. For example, manufacturers may decide to choose the Dimensity 1000 over the Dimensity 1000+ because they do not plan to launch a device with a 144Hz refresh rate, so while pay extra for a feature they do not need?

However, if it is just the Dimensity 1000+ available, manufacturers don’t have to weigh options and pick the one available which of course is the better chipset.

All of the above is just speculations. However, time will tell which chipset will be chosen by manufacturers. Nevertheless, we think the Dimensity 1000 may just be a repeat of the Helio X30.

Taiwanese fabless chipmaker MediaTek earlier today announced the Dimensity 1000+ flagship chipset at an online event in China. The company announced via a Weibo post that iQOO mobile phone will be the first to spot the Dimensity 1000+. iQOO has now confirmed via Weibo that it will indeed release a smartphone with MediaTek’s latest chipset and it will be launched soon.

The Dimensity lineup by MediaTek has proven to be a reliable and solid lineup, at least going by benchmark ranking. Unfortunately, most OEMs have continued to boycott the lineup with just a few phones using them, like the OPPO Reno3 which is powered by the Dimensity 1000L. The new Dimensity 1000+ flagship SoC brings several improvements over the Dimensity 1000, one of which is a higher 144Hz refresh rate.

iQOO already has a smartphone that supports 144Hz refresh rate and that is the iQOO Neo3 5G. The new MediaTek Soc also has a new HyperEngine 2.0 which improves the gaming performance in the new chip. The chipset also supports SA and NSA dual-mode 5G networking and is the only chip in the industry that supports 5G + 5G dual SIM/dual standby and is equipped with 5G dual-carrier aggregation technology. Thus, users will always remain online when they get incoming calls.

The phone maker is yet to reveal the name of the phone that would bear the new processor. There are speculations that it will be the iQOO Neo3 Racing Edition or Neo3 Dimensity Edition. Recall that the first-gen iQOO Neo got a Snapdragon 855+ version dubbed iQOO Neo Racing Edition.

Earlier today (7th May 2020), the known chipmaker, MediaTek, held an online press conference in which it announced the Dimensity 1000+. The new flagship 5G chipset from MediaTek brings in improved performance alongside support for a higher refresh rate.

In the online meeting held by the company, MediaTek unveiled its latest flagship processor that will power flagship 5G handsets. As is the standard in 2020, most premium grade smartphones feature a display with a high refresh rates like 90 or even 120Hz. This is where the Dimensity 1000+ comes in with optimizations for both faster refresh rates for a smoother experience and enhanced 5G networking.

The Dimensity 1000+ arrives with MediaTek’s proprietary 5G UltraSave technology that helps save battery consumption when using the newer and faster bandwidth. This technology automatically switches between the networks and dynamically adjusts working mode of the modem. According to MediaTek, the new chipset consumes about 48 percent lower power in comparison to some of its competing product lines.

Users need not worry about interruption during video calls or gaming when they get incoming calls and will always remain online. The HyperEngine also helps by making intelligent predictions based on network and bandwidth requirements to achieve seamless switching between 4G and 5G. An example would be 5G during gaming and 4G on standby to save battery and data.

Amongst other improvements, the new chipset features low latency and anti jamming technology. The overall gaming experience has been enhanced and the company has even worked on reducing Wi-Fi network delays. Dimesity 1000+ also sports MediaTek’s new image display technology and the new MiraVision image quality engine. The company has announced an imminent upcoming launch with the Chinese OEM iQOO, so we expect more information to arrive soon.

Out goes MediaTek and in comes Qualcomm! A fresh leak has revealed that OnePlus has decided to go with a Qualcomm processor for its upcoming OnePlus Z smartphone and not a MediaTek processor as earlier reports have said.

The info was revealed by Max J. (@MaxJmb), the same leaker that reconfirmed that the OnePlus Z will launch in July. According to a tweet he shared today, the OnePlus Z is powered by a Snapdragon 765 processor with support for 5G.

Earlier leaks had said the OnePlus Z will have MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000/1000L processor under the hood but that seems to have changed. Could it have been that the info was incorrect? Maybe, maybe not.

It is possible that OnePlus originally decided to use one of MediaTek’s new 5G processors but changed its mind. Since the launch is still two months away, there is still enough time for such a major change to happen as long as mass production is yet to commence. However, the reason for changing from MediaTek to Qualcomm can be for a myriad of reasons.

Did Qualcomm offer OnePlus a better deal on the price of its Snapdragon 765 chipset? Did OnePlus, itself, decide to switch to a Snapdragon processor for reasons unknown to us? Is the Dimensity 1000 towing the same line as the ill-fated Helio X30 from a few years ago? We can come up with a lot more questions.

The Snapdragon 765 is a powerful mid-range processor but it still doesn’t match the Dimensity 1000L in terms of performance talk less of the Dimensity 1000. New MediaTek processors are coming. The Taiwanese semiconductor company has announced that it has an online event scheduled for early next month, and there are reports new processors are expected to be unveiled.

The event will be held on May 7 between the hours of 14:30 and 15:30. The poster doesn’t reveal much but has a text that roughly translates to “5G for All”. However, details of what to expect have surfaced from the Chinese leaker that goes by Digital Chat Station on Weibo.

More Powerful versions of the Dimensity 800 and Dimensity 1000

In a Weibo post, he said in addition to the already announced Dimensity 1000L (MT6885z), the Dimensity 800 (MT6873v), and the Dimensity 1000 (MT6889) which is yet to appear in a phone; there are also versions of the Dimensity 1000 and Dimensity 800 with higher clockspeeds in production.

The Dimensity 800 has a clockspeed of 2.0GHz for its Cortex-A76 cores and Cortex-A55 cores. This new version may push the clockspeed of the performance cores to 2.2GHz or 2.3GHz.

On the other hand, the Dimensity 1000 has its Cortex-A77 cores clocked at 2.6GHz along with four Cortex-A55 cores at 2.2GHz. MediaTek may decide to increase the clockspeed of the performance cores or actually adopt a tri-cluster arrangement where one of the performance cores is separated and given a higher clockspeed.

These more powerful versions of the Dimensity 800 and Dimensity 1000 will most likely arrive with new names when they are announced.

Dimensity 2000

The leaker also revealed there is an entry-level processor called the MT6853 in production. However, the one you should be excited about is the Dimensity 2000 which should be its most powerful chipset ever. There are no details about the chipset but we are excited nonetheless.

The device is equipped with a 6.53-inch display that has slim bezels on the sides. It is notch-less screen with a slightly thick chin. There is no information available on the screen resolution. The device supports dual OS booting and it comes with options like Android 10 OS and Linux OS.

The rear side of the Astro Slide 5G features a 48-megapixel camera. The configuration of its front camera is not known. The device promises immersive audio experience through its stereo speakers.

The Astro Slide 5G Transformer is driven by the MediaTek 1000 5G chipset that supports dual-mode 5G, but lacks support for mmWave. The device features 6 GB of RAM and it has a native storage of 128 GB. The device is backed by a 4,000mAh battery. Its other features include a fingerprint reader, a microSD card slot, pair of USB-C ports, dual nano SIM slots, e-SIM support, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC and 3.5mm audio jack.

The Astro Slide 5G Transformer is now listed for crowdfunding on Indiegogo. Early bird buyers can get the device for $544. The device will retail at around $907. The shipments of the phone are expected to begin in March 2021.

MediaTek has just revised the total 5G smartphone sales estimates for 2020. The company announced that it is reducing the projected 5G smartphone sales from over 200 million to between 170-200 million in 2020. This revision is a direct result of the ongoing coronavirus crisis in China, a market where it expects most 5G smartphones to be shipped.

MediaTek predicts China will still ship around 100-120 million 5G smartphones this year, accounting for a global market share of 60%. The company’s CEO revealed at an investor conference yesterday that he is confident that MediaTek will be able to offset the impact of the ongoing crisis in China, all thanks to its 5G, AI, and AIoT chip solutions.

OnePlus 8 lineup that is expected to launch in the second quarter of 2020 may include three models such as OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro and a new one called OnePlus 8 Lite. In December, reputed leakster @OnLeaks shared the first CAD renders of the OnePlus 8 Lite. The renders had revealed that the phone is quipped with dual rear cameras and a display with a top-center punch-hole. SlashLeaks has carried some shots of a dummy unit of the OnePlus 8 Lite. The image shows the device sporting a triple camera system instead of dual rear cameras. Now @OnLeaks has shared an updated render of the OnePlus 8 Lite with triple rear cameras.

The leaked shot seems to show a bunch of OnePlus devices placed inside a container. The blue colored device with triple rear cameras seems to be the OnePlus 8 Lite. The OnePlus phone that can be seen on the OnePlus 8 Lite with triple rear cameras has a notch on its display could be OnePlus 6. Hence, it appears that the frontside of the OnePlus 8 Lite will continue to feature a punch-hole display.

The updated render by @OnLeaks now features a triple camera system at the top-left corner. An LED flash can be seen placed next to the top camera. The rear shell of the phone seems to be made out of glass and there is a OnePlus logo towards the center. The punch-hole display of the phone is likely to be equipped with an in-screen fingerprint reader.

A leaked specs sheet of the OnePlus 8 series that had surfaced on Weibo in December had also carried the specs of the OnePlus 8 Lite. It had revealed that the OnePlus 8 Lite will be arriving with a 6.4-inch S-AMOLED display that will offer 20:9 aspect ratio, 90Hz refresh rate and full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels.

The MediaTek Dimensity 1000 may power the OnePlus 8 Lite with 8 GB of LPDDR4x RAM. The handset could be made available in 128 GB and 256 GB UFS 3.0 storage editions in China. The leak revealed that the EIS and OIS assisted triple camera system of the OnePlus 8 Lite includes a 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 main lens, a 16-megapixel ultrawide lens and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens. It may arrive with a frontal shooter of 16-megapixel (Sony IMX471).

The OnePlus 8 Lite could be housing a 4,000mAh battery with 30W fast charging. It could be an IP53 certified phone with stereo speakers. The OPPO Reno3 5G is the first smartphone in the world to be powered by the Dimensity 1000L. While the MediaTek processor is expected to appear in more devices next year, we are more interested in its more powerful sibling, the Dimensity 1000. And now we know which manufacturer will use it first.

Digital Chat Station revealed in a Weibo post that OPPO will once again be the first manufacturer to announce a phone powered by the Dimensity 1000 next year. He doesn’t mention a date but it should be in January.

We currently can’t say which OPPO phone will come with the chipset but we believe it will be under the Reno series. The Reno 10x Zoom is expected to get a successor, so it may be the device with the Dimensity 1000 while the Snapdragon 865 will power the Find X2.

The Dimensity 1000 is an octa-core processor with 4 x Cortex-A77 cores clocked at 2.6GHz and 4 x Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.2GHz. It will also have the new Mali-G77 GPU. The chipset, just like the Dimensity 1000L, will support SA and NSA 5G networks and have downlink speeds up to 4.7Gbps. It also brings support for 5G dual-SIM that allows you to use two 5G SIM cards at the same time unlike other SoCs that only support the use of 5G in one SIM slot.

A recent leak had revealed that the Chinese firm is also working on a more affordable smartphone called OnePlus 8 Lite. The launch event for the OnePlus 8 series is couple of months away. However, the rumor mill is working hard to spill new details on the OnePlus 8 series. A Chinese tipster has shared full specs of OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 8 Lite. The leak appears to be a calculated guess based on the rumors surrounding the OnePlus 8 lineup.

OnePlus 8, 8 Pro and 8 Lite Specifications (Unconfirmed)

The OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro are rumored to be equipped with 6.4-inch and 6.7-inch S-AMOLED E3 curved dual punch-hole display that supports 120Hz refresh rate. The OnePlus 8 is expected to produce quad HD+ resolution of 1440 x 3140 pixels. The OnePlus 8 Lite may house a 6.4-inch S-AMOLED E2 display with 90Hz refresh rate. According to a new report, MediaTek might be supplying Samsung with 5G chipsets for its low-end range of smartphones in the near future. The former has already formed partnerships with various other brands like Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi and may now also supply the South Korean tech giant for its affordable range of smartphones.

MediaTek, the chip-making company, is projected to see a sizeable growth of 20 percent in terms of sales volume in 2020. The boost in numbers arrives after its announcement of its latest mobile SoC which boasts 5G networking capabilities. The company has invested billions of dollars in 5G technology development with thousands of research specialists and is confident in its products capabilities.

According to a new report, MediaTek’s sales will grow to 9.84 billion US dollars in the Q1 of 2020. The number is about 20 percent higher than the company’s expected sales in 2019. The U.S. securities house published a research note that predicts the boom owing to the new Dimensity 1000 SoC (MediaTek’s first 5G networking capable chipset) which was announced on Tuesday.

The Dimensity 1000 SoC is targetting the Chinese markets according to analysts. This includes manufacturing giants as clients such as Xiaomi and Oppo. The new 5G chipset uses the advance 7nm process of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) which is the world’s largest contract chipmaker. It is expected that the new SoC will hit the markets in the first quarter of 2020.

Yesterday, MediaTek officially unveiled the Dimensity 1000 5G chipset, its first high-end SoC since 2017’s Helio X30. The ‘1000’ is the first chip in the brand new Dimensity series that’ll feature 5G SoCs. However, a number of media outlets in China raised questions about the naming strategy of the new chipset.

In the post-launch conference Q&A session, a couple of Chinese media outlets asked whether MediaTek’s Dimensity ‘1000’ has anything to do with the names of the existing competitors from Huawei or Samsung. Huawei’s 5G chip is called Kirin 990 while Samsung’s new chip also gets the Exynos 990 name. So MediaTek was asked whether the new chip was named as the Dimensity 1000 to get some sort of a naming advantage.

However, MediaTek clarified that Dimensity 1000’s name has nothing to do with the competitors in the market. The number 1000 is considered special internally, so it decided to call its new chipset as Dimensity 1000. However, MediaTek added that they believe its new chipset is definitely better than Huawei’s Kirin 990 5G SoC.

MediaTek also clarified that the Dimensity 1000 is the MT6889 model that was seen on AnTuTu yesterday. But in that case, we are unclear of the identity of the MediaTek MT6885 model that was revealed a few months back. It’s probably going to be a variant or another model in the same Dimensity 5G chipset series.

MediaTek announced the Dimensity 1000 5G flagship processor today. This is its first flagship processor since the failure of the 2017 Helio X30. This new chip will slug it out with other flagship processors such as the Kirin 990 5G, Exynos 990 and Snapdragon 865 processors.

Shortly after the announcement, an AnTuTu benchmark result of the new chipset surfaced on the web and its score blows the competition out of the water. The result was posted on Weibo by a user that goes by the name Hilarious Digital.

The benchmark result shows the unknown device powered by the new MediaTek chip scored a total of 511,683 points on the benchmark app. When compared to AnTuTu’s list of the top-performing devices for October 2019, no phone comes close. The Snapdragon 855 Plus-powered Vivo NEX 3 5G which tops the list has a score of 482,917. The newly announced Honor V30 Pro 5G’s AnTuTu score of 476,480 also doesn’t come close. The Red Magic 3S does come pretty close with its score of 510,496.

The breakdown of the score shows a CPU score of 161266, a GPU score of 196097, and a memory score of 84463.

The test device with the chipset benchmarked is currently unknown but there are speculations it may be the Redmi K30 Pro 5G. No, not the Redmi K30 5G. The K30 5G scheduled for launch next month will have Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 735 5G chipset but the Pro variant which is a flagship phone may be the one to debut with MediaTek’s new processor.

It makes sense this way as Redmi can have a flagship phone available by the beginning of the year rather than waiting for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 processor which likely won’t be available until late February to early March for the early adopters. The Snapdragon 865 will also likely have supply issues since a lot of manufacturers are lined up to use it.

If the Redmi K30 Pro 5G launches in January, buyers not interested in waiting for the Snapdragon 865-powered phones can pick up the Redmi flagship.

Redmi General Manager, Lu Weibing, made a post on Weibo after the processor was announced congratulating MediaTek. The post also mentioned that both companies will work together on 5G phones. The last part of the post says “Redmi 2020, 5G pioneer!”. We want to believe this is a hint that the Redmi phone with the Dimensity 1000 processor arrives next year and it will be the first device powered by it.
