Google‘s latest Pixel 9a has just passed through DxOMark, and its official review is finally out. Like the rest of the Pixel 9 series, it has managed to achieve a decent score in both the camera and display department. So let’s check it out.

In the camera testing, the Search engine giant’s Pixel 9a achieved a score of 153 points. This allowed it to achieve a global smartphone ranking of 33, although it managed to take the 1st position in the high-end segment, which includes upper mid range smartphones. DxOMark’s test revealed that the Pixel 9a managed to offer many of the premium features that was seen on the more expensive Pixel 9 model.

The camera had a good dynamic range, accurate exposure, and great colors. However, zoomed shots suffered due to the lack of a dedicated telephoto shooter. The Pixel 9a struggled in low light situations for photos and videos. DxOMark also tested the device’s display and gave it a score of 155 points. Once again, it is the highest score for its segment. Interestingly, the Pixel 9a even broke the top 10 in the global ranking, taking the 8th position.

The review notes that the display is great for a wide range of use, like typical web browsing and video playback. Google’s Pixel 9a features a vibrant and detailed screen that is fast and accurate in terms of touch input. This model just went on sale in India earlier this month with a starting price tag of 49,999 INR, while its global price tag starts from 499 US Dollars.

The Xiaomi 14 has one of the best camera on any premium smartphone as per DxOMark. The company’s latest flagship was recently unveiled for the global market, and this rating showcases the improvements in photography experience on this device over its predecessors.

Xiaomi 14 Camera ranks 3rd in DxOMark

The camera benchmarking platform gave the Xiaomi 14 a rating of 138 points. The score took into account its still photos, bokeh, video, zoom, and other aspects. For those unaware, the premium phone rankings are for devices that are priced between the 600 to 800 US Dollars range. To recall, the Xiaomi 14 features a 50-megapixel primary sensor that offers OIS, f/1.6 aperture, and a 1/1.31-inch size. This is paired with a 50-megapixel ultra wide angle lens that has a 115° FOV and a 50-megapixel telephoto sensor that features OIS and 75mm focal length.

In the tests, DxOMark noted that there were various enhancements in the Xiaomi 14’s camera over the Xiaomi 13. These improvements were attributed to a larger sensor and a bigger aperture. The Xiaomi 14 was praises for accurate exposure of the target across different conditions. It was The white balance was fairly neutral and the device managed to retain high levels of details in both photos and video.

There was low level of noise in photo and even the telephoto sensor managed to retain good details. However, the Xiaomi 14 suffered from artifacts like flare and ghosting in still photos. While taking videos, noise was clearly visible in low light conditions. Meanwhile, brighter scenes and backlit conditions led to low contrast on faces.

Ever since the launch of the Pixel 6 series, Google has set its sights on besting the comparator Apple iPhone models. This year is no different as the Pixel 8 series is currently sitting on the best smartphone display throne while matching the audio performance of the iPhone 15 Pro. Now, DxOMark has finally revealed the camera test results of the Pixel 8 Pro.

In the DxOMark camera leaderboards, the Google Pixel 8 Pro achieved a score of 153 points, positioning it closely behind the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which scored 154 points. At the moment, the Huawei P60 Pro holds the top position with a leading score of 156 points.

As per DxOMark, the Google Pixel 8 Pro‘s camera system has some strong points. It does well in showing nice colors in different lighting, from bright outdoors to very dark conditions, for both photos and videos. It’s good at making skin tones look accurate in all lighting too. The camera focuses quickly and accurately in photos and videos. It usually gets the exposure right for subjects in photos and videos. It captures a lot of details when you zoom in and in close-up pictures.

The videos look steady in most lighting. The front camera also shows good colors and improved texture in close-up shots. The screen is easy to read in all conditions, and it shows nice colors. Over the years, Oppo has put major effort into improving its camera system at the flagship level to compete against the top dogs in the industry. While it might not have made it to the top when it comes to traditional flagship smartphones, the brand has managed to edge out its competition in the flip smartphone category.

In a recent DxOMark camera test, the Oppo Find N2 Flip was found to outperform the Galaxy Z Flip 4. Although it was a close competition, with the Find N2 Flip scoring 114 points and the Galaxy Z Flip 4 scoring 112 points. The results show that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 takes slightly better pictures in normal mode, but the Oppo Find N2 Flip excels in zoom and video modes.

According to the test, the Find N2 Flip camera offers excellent photo and video exposure with a wide dynamic range, produces a decent balance between texture and noise in photos, records videos with low levels of noise, provides a reasonably wide depth of field, accurately estimates depth, and produces a pleasant blur gradient in bokeh mode. Additionally, it boasts fast autofocus in video mode.

Despite the impressive test results, the camera system still has some limitations. Shutter lag was observed, as well as exposure instabilities in indoor and low-light settings for both photos and videos. In certain conditions, there were white balance casts and inaccurate colors in photos, as well as fusion artifacts and ghosting. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra has managed to take fifth place on DxOMark’s global rankings for smartphone cameras. It has scored 138 points in the test, knocking iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max out of the top 5, both of which have 137 points.

The device is praised for its excellent overall image quality in most use cases, and its versatility, offering two different image signatures for users to choose from. Low light imaging is also a strong point, with the camera offering a wide dynamic range in night mode. The ultra-wide and zoom cameras provide excellent images at all distances, particularly long-range. The camera also has an excellent performance in video mode, offering extended dynamic range, natural texture rendering, and good exposure.

All that said, the camera sometimes lacks consistency, resulting in disparities among images, even sometimes between consecutive shots. Also, the preview does not always match the final captured image. Other than that, the camera struggles with very challenging light situations like highly contrasted scenes.

Back in September, vivo launched its latest flagship, the X70 Pro+, with all the latest and greatest specs one would expect out of a premium smartphone but with a special on cameras and imaging technology. Now, the X70 Pro+ has just passed through the DxOMark camera test and has scored 135 points, cracking the top 10 rankings for the best smartphone camera.

In the DxOMark camera test, the vivo flagship achieved a notable score of 135 points. Its camera scored 139 points, while its zoom and video scores reached 88 and 115 points, respectively. Through these scores, the X70 Pro+ secured the 7th position in DxOMark’s top smartphone camera list.

Looking at the tests, the device showed great performance when it came to exposure of the shots and the wide dynamic range related to the main and ultra-wide-angle sensor. The vivo x70 Pro+ has good management of digital noise in low light conditions and delivers accurate color rendering. The device provides a natural blur gradient and good subject isolation in bokeh mode.

While shooting videos, the X70 Pro+ provides good exposure, nice color, and accurate white balance in bright light and indoor and also has effective video stabilization.

However, the tests also found that the vivo X70 Pro+ suffers from autofocus issues, which is a little slow in reacting to scene changes. Fusion artifacts are quite intrusive while in low light and varying levels of noise reduction through consecutive shots. Another setback is observed while noise filming indoors or in low light.

Despite these flaws, the vivo X70 Pro+ has managed a significant score of 135 points thanks to several improvements in various areas over its predecessor. The device beat Asus’s Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders with its score but still lost to the Huawei Mate 40 Pro. As for now, the Huawei P50 Pro still tops the chart while the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra arrives second.

DxOMark has just released the camera review for another smartphone model. This time, the company reviewed the Xiaomi 11T, which is the more affordable version of the previously reviewed 11T Pro.

For those unaware, DxOMark is a known firm that tests and reviews cameras and smartphones cameras, being a known benchmarking platform as well in the industry. Looking at scores, the Xiaomi 11T scored 108 points in total, with the Photo category scoring 111 points while the Zoom and Video segments scores 42 and 105 points respectively. Despite the base 11T and 11T Pro featuring the same camera hardware, the Pro performed noticeably higher scoring 117 points.

So, the difference is likely the processor, with the former featuring a MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC while the latter sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC. According to DxOMark, the difference “goes to show that chipset and tuning have a big impact on image quality.” Coming back to the review, the firm praised the device for its accurate autofocus in outdoors and indoors environments. Furthermore, it even offered low noise in photos in videos as well. It was also touted for its color rendering in videos, which even retained great detail.

However, DxOMark found a loss of fine detail in photo mode and images also had unnatural skin tones in some images. The autofocus also fails and is unstable in low light scenarios. While zooming the smartphone unfortunately offered low levels of detail and night shots were often underexposed, which again goes to show how big an impact a chipset and tuning has on image quality.

Its camera scored 144 points, while its zoom and video scores reached 76 and 119 points respectively. This had the device enter the top 5 rankings, arriving fourth in DxOMark’s top smartphone camera list. Looking at the tests, the handset received praise for its color tones and white balances, along with fast, accurate and repeatable autofocus.

Furthermore, the device handled target exposure well and managed to retain great detail in indoor and outdoor conditions. However, the tests also found that the iPhone 13 Pro suffered from limited dynamic range in high contrast scenes, along with other issues like lens flare and ghosting in low light videos. Most of the minor issues were found in the video tests, which included loss of sharpness and lack of textures in videos.

Despite these flaws, the iPhone 13 Pro achieved a notable score thanks to several improvements in various areas over its predecessor. DxOMark noted that the Cupertino based giant managed to squeeze out the most of its imaging hardware, which is reportedly custom sensors from Sony. With its score, the device managed to beat the Huawei Mate 40, but still lost to the Mate 40 Pro+. As of right now, the Huawei P50 Pro still tops the chart while the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra arrives second.

The Oppo Find X3 Pro has just passed through DxoMark’s camera rating. The device scored 131 points in the testing tying with the Vivo X50 Pro+, with its ultra wide angle and short telephoto lens receiving praises in particular.

As per the DxOMark report, the Find X3 Pro is the Chinese tech giant’s 2021 flagship smartphone model that offers a quad camera setup on the rear. The primary lens is a 50 megapixel sensor, paired with another 50 megapixel wide angle lens, a 13 megapixel telephoto shooter, and a 3 megapixel microscope camera. Looking at the test summary, the device scored 139 points in photography, while it received 111 points in video and 71 points for zoom tests.

This translates to the device holding the number sixth DxOMark ranking with the camera rating firm praising it for its “Vivid and pleasant color in most photos and videos,” along with its good detail retention in both videos and photos. Furthermore, the depth estimation for bokeh photos was found to be accurate, with its autofocus being smooth and fast for videos, which also highlighted its effective stabilization as well.

On the other hand, the device lost points for exposure instabilities in high contrast scenes. Similarly, exposure adaptation in videos was also unstable at times. During low light scenes, the videos were underexposed and auto focus was slow. Night scenes also revealed strong noise in the video captures, while luminance noise and white balance plagued both photos and videos at times. Overall, the Oppo Find X3 Pro still offered a strong camera performance and was said to be one of the best devices that DxOMark has ever tested.

The video captures also retained high detail on faces, with accurate exposure and effective stabilization when standing still. However, DxOMark found high noise in videos, which also suffered from a limited dynamic range. There was also a noticeable shift in sharpness between video frames. All in all, the handset had a mixed photography performance, with its strengths leaning more towards videography.

The Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro 5G has just undergone camera tests from DxOMark, the known smartphone camera reviewer. The firm called the device a “Competent mid ranger,” achieving a score of 118 points.

Xiaomi had launched the Mi 10T Pro 5G back in September 2020 and a flagship model from the company. On the rear, it sports a triple camera setup with a 108 megapixel primary camera along with a 13 megapixel ultra wide angle lens and a 5 megapixel macro sensor. For photography, the Mi 10T Pro scored 121 points, 61 points on Zoom, and 110 points on videos.

For videography, the Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro achieves high details in videos, which has accurate exposure in outdoor and indoor recordings. Furthermore, the stabilization on the videos was also found to be most effective. However, the device had visible artifacts in low light videos and inconsistencies in night scenes when capturing a video. Overall, the primary camera performed well and delivered high quality vidoes and photos for the most part, while its zoom and performance match other handsets in the mid range categories.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G has just been reviewed again by known camera reviewing brand DxOMark. The tests have revealed that the company’s flagship Snapdragon version has scored lower than its Exynos variant.

Looking at the scores, the Snapdragon version that got reviewed recently scored 117 points in the DxOMark camera test while the Exynos variant scored 120 points when put through the same tests. The score had the handset receive 119 points for its photography, 75 for its zoom, and 103 points for its video recording. DxOMark noted that while the device offered “competent” performance with good “photographic versatility,” it is still not as impressive as the smartphones on the top of its rankings.

Talking about score, the firm found that it offered vivid colors in most images, with good details in both indoor and outdoor shots. It even praised the device’s bokeh mode and depth estimation, while its long range zoom pictures also retained high levels of details. The stabilization on videos was also quite effective and the white balance was neutral for both indoor and outdoor videos as well. Unfortunately, the flagship suffered from various instances of instability in autofocus both during videos and photos.

Night scenes or other low light scenarios had the device struggle, with noise being noticeable in most images. Furthermore, DxOMark also found a number of inconsistencies in performance while capturing videos, especially in terms of sharpness in between frames while walking. While the Exynos and Snapdragon variants offer comparable performance, the firm still preferred the the former over the latter, due to its more erratic autofocus performance and higher levels of noise.

Earlier this month, DXOMARK reviewed the audio performance of the Apple iPhone 12. The smartphone scored 73 points, which happens to be two points more than last year’s iPhone 11 Pro Max (71 points) but lower by one point of iPhone XS Max (74 points). Now, the company has published the camera review of this handset.

The iPhone 12 ranks distant 13th by scoring 122 points on DXOMARK. The device not only falls behind the iPhone 12 Pro Max (130 points) and the iPhone 12 Pro (128 points) but also scores fewer points than the iPhone 11 Pro Max (120 points).

Out of four new 5G smartphones launched by Apple in 2020, the iPhone 12 can be considered as the iPhone for most users. It features a dual-camera setup consisting of a primary 12MP sensor with 1.4µm pixels, f/1.6 lens, OIS, and PDAF. Whereas, the f/2.4 lens-equipped secondary unit sports a 12 MP 1/3.6-inch sensor.

This camera setup is capable of recording 4K videos at 24/30/60 fps, 1080p videos at 30/60/120/240 fps, Dolby Vision HDR videos(up to 30 fps). Lastly, it supports gyro-EIS and is paired with a dual-LED flash.

Talking about performance, the iPhone 12 scores 132 points for camera (pictures), 112 points for videos, and a mere 41 points for zoom capability as it lacks a telephoto lens.

In a nutshell, according to DXOMARK, the iPhone 12’s cameras perform well overall but falls behind the flagships from Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, and even Apple’s own higher-end iPhones. However, its video performance is much better than most smartphones, In fact, it ranks third in this department by typing with the iPhone 12 Pro.

The camera system on the phone offers accurate and consistent autofocus, exposure, and colors (indoors). It also outputs detailed images both outdoors and indoors. Further, the videos recorded on this handset have a wide dynamic range, pleasant color and skin tones, and effective stabilization even while walking.

The above-mentioned pros do not mean iPhone 12’s camera performance is flawless. Because the cameras also have cons such as limited dynamic range in stills, visible noise in stills (especially lower light), color quantization, hue shift, visible ringing artifacts in stills, sub-par zoom performance, white balance casts in outdoor stills as well as videos, and low-detailed videos in low-light scenarios.

Google’s Pixel 4a has a single rear camera. Now, if you think that’s pretty dull compared to the 2020 standards, take a look at what DXOMARK has to say about its rear camera performance.

Right off the bat, if we look at the overall score, the Pixel 4a gets 111 points. That’s a pretty good leap from the predecessor(Pixel 3a– 101 points) despite having a similar lens.  This is by no means comparable to the top contenders like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Vivo. Still, Pixel 4a reportedly fares well in Camera, Video with just one lens. In fact, it scores a respectable 122 points in the Photo category.

Google’s Pixel 4a was announced back in August. It is a budget offering from Google to compete with the likes of Apple’s iPhone SE 2020. You can take a look at the hardware specs of the Pixel 4a rear camera below:

Pixel 4A Camera: Pros and Cons

DXOMARK says the image quality of Pixel 4a is similar to yesteryear Pixel 4. It has good color reproduction, autofocus, exposure, and artifacts control. In the video category, it scores 98 points which is better than the Pixel 4. However, despite having good colors, autofocus, and noise levels, overall video quality seems to be well behind the competition.

Overall, if we look at the Pros, it has good exposure, autofocus, white balance(night) in Photos, and good vivid color reproduction(indoor, outdoor), outdoor noise levels in videos.

However, it has Cons like restricted dynamic range, orange color cast, low detail in Photo and video. Additionally, it also produces Autofocus failure in long-zoom, limited Portrait DOF(depth of field).

Some of the pros of the phone’s rear camera setup include wide dynamic range, fast and accurate AF for both photos as well as videos, good depth estimation in bokeh mode, accurate wite balance in videos, and more.

Earlier today (5th June 2020), DxOMark published the camera ratings for the OnePlus 8 Pro. The tests had the Chinese company’s flagship receive 119 points overall, which sits above the Samsung Galaxy S20+ and even the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max and arrives tenth in the DxOMark camera leaderboard.

For those unaware, DxOMark is a known firm in the smartphone industry that tests smartphones camera and even audio performance. Its reviews have even become a selling point for smartphones and the latest review brings OnePlus’ 2020 flagship into the spotlight. In the testing, DxOMark rated both the photography and videography of the device, with a score of 126 and 103 points respectively.

In terms of photography, the OnePlus 8 Pro received praise for its exposure and color accuracy. Its telephoto lens and zoom camera were also well received and its decent noise reduction in various scenarios. The camera retained good detail in most favorable conditions and its autofocus was generally accurate and quick. A few issues noted during testing were some obvious artifacts, with ghosting being visible on moving objects and strong flare on bright light sources.

Talking about video capture, exposure, color accuracy, and autofocus were praised again for consistent performance. The primary sensor’s stabilization also receives a high scoring due to its impressive functionality. However, the testings did reveal a few issues, pertaining to shadow exposure in HDR scenes, some visible temporal noise and aliasing being visible in highlights. Apart from these, the camera of the OnePlus 8 Pro was said to be a great and consistent performer, which has come a long way in just a few short years of the company’s existence.

DxOMark has been existing for over a decade but it came into light after the company started reviewing smartphone cameras. The original Google Pixel was one of the first phones to be advertised with the DxOMark score. Last year, the company even began to review audio performance of handsets. Having said that, it has now released the list of best camera, selfie, and audio smartphones.

DxOMark Camera and DxOMark Audio teams review smartphones on a regular basis when new devices hit the markets. They never publish stories on best smartphones for camera, selfie, and audio since it can be easily known from the website’s homepage. 

Surprisingly, they did publish them now and here we are doing a PSA. The company has posted three different posts for each category and listed the best device along with runner-ups. That being said, let us take a look at the winners.

DxOMark Best Smartphone Cameras

DxOMark has divided this category into 6 sub-categories and the Huawei P40 Pro wins 4 of them since it is still the unbeatable king with an overall camera score of 128.

 Anyway, here are the winners and runner-ups of DxOMark best smartphone cameras.

DxOMark Best Smartphone Selfie Cameras

This category includes two sub-categories and they are selfie photo and selfie video respectively. Unsurprisingly, Huawei P40 Pro wins in both with some Samsung Galaxies as runner-ups.

DxOMark Best Smartphones For Audio

This is the only category in which the Huawei P40 Pro neither wins or nor gets a runner-up tag. The Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro wins in this category for audio playback, whereas the Honor V30 Pro performs well in audio recording.

The Huawei P40 Pro excels in the camera department unlike any other smartphone released so far as per DxOMark. Unfortunately, this handset is hard to recommend due to the lack of GMS (Google Mobile Services) and other crucial daily used apps.

Samsung’s first clamshell foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Flip gets tested by the DxOMark Camera team. The handset bags an overall score of 105 points with 109 and 96 points in camera and video performances respectively. The phone ranks 27th in the list between 106 and 104 points of iPhone Xs Max and Zenfone 6.

The Galaxy Z Flip is not a camera beast in terms of hardware but still, it performs well. The higher price tag is for the phone’s unique form factor featuring a folding OLED screen. Hence, it should not be compared with standard smartphones in the first place. Anyway, according to DxOMark, the device nails down the basics with accurate exposures.

The pictures taken from the phone in good lighting have accurate white balance and good dynamic range but with noticeable highlight and shadow clipping in contrasty scenarios. Color rendering is fine, however, the phone tends to sometimes desaturate pictures outdoors.

The handset controls the noise fairly well with good texture. Although the autofocus on the device is accurate and consistent, it is slower than other high-end devices. The images from the phone do have problems with softness and occasional flare, ghosting, and color fringing.

The Samsung Galaxy Flip’s ultra-wide-angle camera performs as good as other best phones in this department. But the bokeh performance is not as good as other flagships.

The phone does well with flash portraits in low-light scenarios. However, the cityscapes at night are not impressive but the detail and noise are similar to the pictures from iPhone 11 Pro Max.

The videos from the Galaxy Flip are vivid with pleasant colors and accurate exposure. The autofocus and stabilization remain consistently effective. But poor dynamic range as well as sharpness with strong luminance and chroma noise in low-light conditions.

Overall, the Galaxy Z Flip is good enough for most people but nothing extraordinary in terms of camera performance.
