Starting this November, Huawei is officially rolling out the stable release of its latest and greatest HarmonyOS 3 OS upgrade to the brand’s flagship device users in China. 

According to the HarmonyOS software development team’s official Weibo account, the stable update will be available to Huawei’s latest releases as well as the Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro 5G smartphones, which were released 3 years ago back in 2019.

The full list of devices eligible to upgrade from HarmonyOS 2 to HarmonyOS 3 is as follows:

In addition to the stable release rollout announcement, Huawei also shared that it has opened applications for its public beta programme for HarmonyOS 3.0 to Huawei MatePad 10.8-inch, Huawei MatePad Pro 10.8-inch and Huawei MatePad Pro 5G 10.8-inch users, as well as an early access closed beta programme for Huawei Nova 6, Nova 6 5G, Nova 7 5G, and Nova 7 Pro 5G users for Huawei fans who cannot wait to experience the latest HarmonyOS 3 features before a stable release.

The new HarmonyOS 3 upgrade brings several next-generation software updates that range from decently cool to life-changing. One particular highlight is that in HarmonyOS 3, HarmonyOS devices don’t need to be on a shared Wi-Fi network for seamless interconnectivity to work, the devices can now sense each other. One example is a Huawei tablet next to a Huawei phone will be able to let you answer calls and will display SMS messages as if they were the same device.

A great aftersales customer experience is always crucial in maintaining a brand’s reputation in the industry, especially in the smartphone industry. While smartphone manufacturers always promise 2-5 years of software support for their devices in the long run, these major software updates normally take up more and more space in your old phone.

In China, Huawei has proposed a solution for these old phone users to extend their phones’ life cycle without having to pay a premium. Huawei officially calls this aftersales service as “Internal Storage Upgrade Solution”. The service has been running in China since last year for its flagship Huawei P10 series up until the Huawei Mate 30 series, and as of February 2022, Huawei has now added its Huawei P40 lineup into the service.

How the storage upgrade service works is quite simple. Let’s say a user has a Huawei P40 in a 128GB storage configuration. After 1 year, they have realised that 128GB is not enough to store all their apps and media on their phone, and they want to upgrade to 256GB storage without changing their phone. The user can simply visit their nearest Huawei Service Centre in China and pay 559 RMB(USD 88) to get their Huawei P40 128GB upgraded to a 256GB configuration.

Do note that quotations for each device varies, so you may need to visit Huawei’s China website first to get a quotation for your internal storage upgrade before you visit a Huawei Service Centre in China.

For under USD 100, the service also ensures that all of the users data will be transferred over to the new storage drive. This service takes up to an average of 10 days to complete and is currently only available in Chinese markets, not available worldwide.

The service serves as a convenience to those who feel like they are comfortable with their current Huawei phone but wished that their phone supported more storage. Indirectly, the end-user can also save themselves the hassle of searching for a new phone and splurging top dollar to get the phones they want, when they could comfortably settle back on an older flagship that they currently have.

As of recent, Huawei Senior Product Manager, Mr. Wang Yonggang, who is in charge of the development of the Huawei flagship P series lineup of smartphones, broke out the great news that the Huawei P series flagships have exceeded 100 million sales globally(including in China) in total since it launched the Huawei Ascend P1 almost 10 years ago. Through a blog post in the Huawei Xinsheng online forum (an online community for Huawei users in China), he shared the many milestones that Huawei has achieved in the smartphone market throughout the 10 years since Huawei launched its first flagship, the Huawei Ascend P1, back in January 2012.

Huawei first started development for the Huawei Ascend P1 as early as in the summer of 2011, where Huawei wanted to put out its first competitive flagship smartphone to the market to make a name for itself in the industry. Mr. Wang Yonggang recalled that Huawei called in their research team from Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi’an to fly over to Shenzhen to help develop the Huawei Ascend P1 together with their Shenzhen team. 

After many months of market research and prototypes, they finally launched the Huawei Ascend P1 in January 2012 with a 4.3 AMOLED display, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 8MP BSI rear camera in a lightweight and 7.6mm unibody, at a flagship price of RMB 2,999(471 USD) at the time. 

Although the Huawei Ascend P1 was not a bestseller by any metrics, it was Huawei’s first step to transition away from a B2B (Business to Business) company to a B2C(Business to Consumer) company with its first-ever flagship smartphone for the Chinese public.

Huawei’s next flagship, the Huawei Ascend P2, however, was not released in China and was instead released outside of China in markets such as the European and Japanese markets in 2013. This was due in part that the Huawei Ascend P2 was equipped with 4G which China did not have a proper rollout till 2014, and therefore Huawei decided to release it in the global market instead. The Huawei Ascend P2 was also the first Huawei flagship to be equipped with Huawei’s in-house Kirin SOC.

The next milestone for Huawei was the Huawei Ascend P6 with its show-stopping ID design, as the P6 was the world’s thinnest smartphone at its release, with a thickness of only 6.18mm. Looking back, it was the Huawei flagship that defined the premium design language of Huawei P series flagships for many years to come. 

The next big leap was the Huawei P9 with its dual rear camera setup. The Huawei P9 was Huawei’s first phone to collaborate with famous camera imaging company Leica, and the P9’s rear camera was equipped with a normal color lens as well as a monochrome lens. The phone then captures the image with both lenses and uses computational software to provide the best-looking photo for the user.

The next generational leap in photography was with the Huawei P20 Pro with its industry-breaking triple camera setup consisting of a wide lens, a monochrome lens, and a telephoto lens for versatile photography. The Huawei P20 Pro also came with the popular colourway Twilight, which solidified Huawei’s flagship design philosophy in the premium market.

The Huawei P30 series adopted a new type of RYYB colored lens for better images, while the P40 series provided marginal upgrades, such as 10x optical zoom for the series.

The Huawei P50 series was quite a confusing flagship lineup until recently. But Huawei launched the P50 Pocket this week, the company’s first-ever clamshell flagship foldable, which proved that Huawei is bringing forward innovation to its P series flagships once again.

Counterpoint Research has released a report for the Top-selling 5G smartphones worldwide for the month of September 2020. And China’s Huawei has the same number of devices as Samsung in the top-10 despite facing pressure from all sides.

The report primarily talks about the Top-10 5G smartphones and their market share Globally in September. To begin with, the list has about seven devices from Chinese OEMs like Huawei, OPPO, Vivo, Honor. That’s a no-brainer considering the country’s 5G expansion is way ahead of the world. However, what is surprising is the presence of Huawei which has three devices in the list equalling rival Samsung.

Precisely, the Huawei P40 Pro, Nova 7, P40 occupy second, third, and fifth positions with 4.5%, 4.3%, and 3.8% market share respectively. This is a healthy trend for a company that is facing the heat elsewhere. In fact, the company recently led China where over 50% of 5G devices accounted for the total units sold in Q3. It’s ex-sister brand Honor also has an Honor 30S at the bottom with a 2.8% share.

Earlier this year, 5G was still available in only a few devices Globally and Hence, it didn’t penetrate deep into the markets. However, if you take China, it started the 5G rollout last October and is already pushing for 6G when other countries are struggling to adopt 5G better.

Besides, the report also shows budget smartphones like Oppo A72 5G, and Vivo Y70s 5G. This suggests that the 5G is entering into the affordable segment and breaking the notion of a “premium feature”. As the report says, this has become possible due to the mid-range 5G SoC of Qualcomm, MediaTek. That said, the report predicts that Apple will play a big role in commercializing 5G in North America, Europe after the iPhone 12 series.

Having said that, the list also has Samsung whose Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G sits at the top with a 5.0% market share. It has two more devices the Galaxy S20+ 5G, Note 20 5G with 4.0%, and 2.9% global share respectively.

In any case, this is a welcoming trend as there are more than 200 5G models currently compared to only 50 in Q1. Overall, the growth of the 5G models has increased by 300% in Q3 2020 compared to Q1. And as affordable 5G devices launch, and continue to grab attention, the contribution of top-10 devices in the total 5G sales has shrunk to 37% in September compared to 93% in Jan 2020.

Last week, Huawei shared EMUI 11.0 and Magic UI 4.0 update timeline for eligible devices. Based on that, the company has started rolling out the stable update to the first batch of devices consisting of models from the HUAWEI P40 series and the HUAWEI Mate30 series.

As per the roadmap released by Huawei, a total of 10 devices should receive EMUI 11 stable update in early November. But however, the company has begun to seed the builds only for 8 devices leaving out the two tablets – HUAWEI MatePad Pro and HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G.

That means the EMUI 11 stable update is currently live for the following devices.

• HUAWEI P40
• HUAWEI P40 Pro
• HUAWEI P40 Pro+
• HUAWEI Mate30
• HUAWEI Mate30 5G
• HUAWEI Mate30 Pro
• HUAWEI Mate30 Pro 5G
• PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate30 RS

Having said that, the update is currently limited to China only. Above all, even in the company’s home country, it is only available for certain users. That’s because the builds are being pushed in batches. Also, if the user is already running the latest open beta release, then they have a high chance of getting the update first.

Anyway, Huawei is yet to release EMUI 11 and Magic UI 4.0 rollout schedule for international markets although beta testing has begun for select high-end smartphones in certain regions.

Huawei officially announced EMUI 11 earlier this month at the HUAWEI DEVELOPER CONFERENCE 2020. Initially, the beta builds of the company’s latest mobile software were limited to certain devices in China. Now, the Chinese smartphone maker has begun to recruit beta testers in Germany, Russia, Turkey, and the UK.

EMUI 11 is the ninth iteration of Huawei’s mobile operating system. Unfortunately, it is based on Android 10 due to the US ban. However, the company has promised to bring select Android 11 features to its devices before updating them to HarmonyOS later next year.

That said, the company has rolled out beta builds of the new version of its Android skin to a plethora of devices in its home country China. Thankfully, it has now started beta recruitment for global markets as well.

Currently, the registrations for the EMUI 11 Beta program is live in Germany, Russia, Turkey, and the UK for the following four smartphones.

• HUAWEI P40
• HUAWEI P40 Pro
• HUAWEI P40 Pro+
• HUAWEI Mate30 Pro

We expect Huawei to soon open global beta registrations for more handsets as well as tablets in the coming weeks. 

Anyway, it is worth noting that this initiative is purely for beta builds that may contain severe bugs. So we would recommend you to stay away from it if you don’t know what you are getting into. 

Further, although the Chinese telecom giant will begin to seed beta builds to selected users in a few days from now, the stable rollout may take time.

The Chinese electric car maker BYD and smartphone maker Huawei has announced the world’s first series of cars that will feature the latter’s HiCar system. This new system has been developed by Huawei and is based on its proprietary HarmonyOS.

The new HiCar system is an intelligent connectivity based solution that is built on Huawei’s self developed operating system. It was announced on July 12th and marks the company’s expansion into the automotive networking field. BYD’s latest electric flagship car model Han will be the first to feature the new OS, according to Richard Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei.

This is also the first time Huawei is offering 5G solutions in vehicles. HarmonyOS was built to be a widely supported cross platform OS and this expansion follows the same philosophy. Notably, the HiCar system will be available in more than 120 car modes from over 30 different automobile makers including Audi, BYD, GAC, and BAIC. The new system will basically allow users to control their cars with smartphones, check car status in real time, and more.

Furthermore, during the Sunday launch conference, the senior executive also unveiled a new special variant of the Huawei P40. This new variant of the flagship carries a logo on the rear that commemorates the new HiCar system and BYD collaboration and the word “Han” on the top right corner. Apart from the appearance, the device sports identical feature on the inside.

Over the past couple of years, Huawei has matured into a world-class smartphone maker. We look forward to the Huawei P-series in the first half of every year, as it often becomes the benchmark for smartphone cameras in that year. 2020 hasn’t been any different. And our anticipation was rewarded with not one but two powerful camera flagships, the Huawei P40 Pro and the Huawei P40 Pro Plus. 

Yes, for those unaware, the top-end model in the Huawei P-series family is called the Huawei P40 Pro Plus. It’s not exactly a classy name, but it is one hell of a phone when it comes to smartphone photography. Huawei is one of the very few smartphone brands that’s still expanding the range of possibilities for the smartphone camera. In fact, before 2016, it was really hard to predict how far ahead mobile photography could go, especially after seeing the decades of professional-camera development. 

But in 2020, here we are, talking about the 10x optical zoom capacity of the HUAWEI P40 PRO Plus. This 10X optical zoom has a maximum focal length of 269mm, which covers a really wide range of focal lengths, even wider than some mirrorless camera. However, from another perspective, the HUAWEI P40 Pro Plus is the smallest camera that you can find on the planet having such a working 10x optical zoom range!

Well as a phone, 226g weight could be a bit heavy to hold it in your hand. But it seems that the P40 Pro Plus is competing against not just smartphones but also some mirrorless cameras. Accordingly, for its target users, the weight should not be a big problem. Actually the P40 Pro Plus shares the most common features with the P40 Pro. Probably the only difference is the camera experience brought by the additional telephoto camera combination and camera software updates. And in this article, we’re still going to talk about what the P40 Pro Plus model can offer to both professionals and ordinary users. 

Let’s first identify the demands of ordinary users and professionals, respectively. For ordinary users, mobile photography is their primary device to record and create memories. They usually demand the phone to be an all-rounder such as being easy to use, having good image colors and clarity, having a large storage or cloud storage, supporting intelligent image editing, and so on. Now let’s look at the P40 Pro Plus, and see how it meets this kind of users’ demands. 

Huawei P40 Pro Plus’ camera isn’t very different from the P40 Pro since they share the same primary sensor. The camera samples have great contrast and good exposure latitude. And the original 50MP resolution also provided a clear image with good sharpness. And to simplify photography for users, Huawei has one of the most effective AI solutions for scene recognition and color tuning. So even for general users, it’s not difficult to apply appropriate color styles for different topics. 

Huawei P40 Pro Plus vs P40 Pro Zoom Review

And if you are bored with the standard wide-angle view, the P40 Pro Plus amazingly brings you 2 more optical zoom cameras, a 3x and another 10x telephoto camera – a first for a smartphone in the market. Compared to the 5x zoom camera of the P40 Pro, the 3x zoom camera for the Plus version probably is a better choice. So you get a high-quality optical zoom between 3x and 10x. The 3x zoom has a maximum focal length of 81mm, which is closer to a 50mm portrait lens.

The most frequently used range of focal length usually stays no longer than 100mm, so it seems that a 3x optical zoom camera is more practical than the 5x telephoto sensor of the Pro model. However, we have to compare the samples from the P40 Pro and Plus in different zoom ranges to test this belief.

From 0.6x to 2.9x zoom, there is not much difference between the 40 Pro and the Plus version due to the same wide-angle camera and main primary shooter. But when we extended the zoom range from 3x to 4.9x, the image quality difference turned out to be remarkable as the Plus version was using the separate 3x optical lens while the image shot by the Pro version is a cropped creation by the primary camera. Though the color is quite similar to each other as they’re running the same camera software, it’s no doubt that the separate 8MP 3x zoom camera produces a clearer image with better details.

From 5x to 9x zoom, the images shot by the Pro version took the definite lead. It’s not surprising as the Pro version used its 5x optical zoom camera, while the Plus version still used its 3x zoom camera.

And eventually, as we zoomed the Plus version to 9.1 times, what we saw in the viewfinder is pretty surprising, not just because of its superb clarity but also for its powerful stabilization when I was holding it in my hands. It’s worth adding that even for some professional cameras, it’s NOT common to have such stabilization over 200mm focal length. After seeing it on a phone, we are really amazed by the tech developed by Huawei. It is the first and only brand (so far) to bring 10x optical zoom to everyday users without any need for expert or technical photography knowledge. 

So it’s clear that the additional expensive camera sensor is fully functional and not just aa gimmick. We could also apply different filters and night mode to the whole range of focal length. 

Huawei P40 Pro Plus In Night Mode

Now, let’s see some 10x zoom samples under night mode. Similar to how it works over the primary camera, users have to hold it steady for several seconds as it creates composite photos. So if you want to use the 10x zoom camera, it’s better to attach the phone to a tripod to get a perfect stabilization.

But the Huawei P40 Pro Plus has the same issue we discussed in the review video of the P40 Pro model, which is the viewfinder. What you see on the display viewfinder is not what you eventually get. The captured images turn out to better than what’s seen on the viewfinder.

It’s probably designed to protect the phone from overheating and consuming a lot of power. After all, computing the final result live on the viewfinder could be an exhausting task for the device. And indeed, the Plus variant managed to keep the temperature under control with good power consumption levels. We’ll talk about it in detail in the next para.

Huawei P40 Pro Plus Videography & Battery Consumption

In addition to all the camera experience, we also tested the Plus model’s battery endurance as a filming machine. So we shot 4k 60fps video on both the P40 Pro and the Plus version for 30 mins. 

The P40 Pro consumed 18% power, while the Plus model consumed 17% of power. And both of them controlled the temperature very well. So accordingly, there should be little difference between their battery performance. Accordingly, we estimate that the P40 Pro and the Plus version can shoot video at the highest quality for over 2 and a half hours.

So that’s how the Plus version enhances everyday photography for ordinary users.

But for professional photographers, all the features we’ve talked about probably just meet their basic demands in their creation process. Compared to their professional equipment, the image quality created by the HUAWEI P40 PRO Plus may not able to convince them to use it as the primary device for photography, at least not for every professional. However, it doesn’t mean that the Plus version is completely useless for professional photographers. 

As we mentioned above, the P40 Pro Plus is small and is able to shoot excellent zoomed-in photos without the need for bulky switchable lenses. Believe it or not, photographers hate carrying all kinds of cameras and their accessories when they need to work in poor conditions. More importantly, great moments are fleeting. So even professionals often need something that’s portable but capable of delivering good quality shots. And the Huawei P40 Pro Plus comes close to meeting this demand. 

We have seen the evolution of the phone camera for years, and it is undeniable that the Huawei P series is one of the most aggressive camera smartphone lineups. For ordinary users, the intelligence of its cameras such as AI recognition helps bring a high-end photography experience without the need for any technical knowledge. For professionals, on the contrary, it expands the possibility of what a smartphone camera can do, bringing it closer to professional cameras than ever before.

Huawei launched a revisited version of its 2019 flagship for the global market: Huawei P30 Pro New Edition. A pretty nice trick to avoid the limitations of the U.S. ban and bring a flagship with Google services and apps on the shelves. Yes, because in case you do not know, Huawei can not install Google services on its new devices anymore since it lost the Android license due to the U.S. ban. But besides having Google services out of the box, is the New Edition of the Huawei P30 Pro worth the money asked in 2020 or it is still better to go for other Huawei flagships? You can discover it with us in this specs comparison in which we included the vanilla Huawei P40 and Huawei Mate 30, two devices sold in the same price range.

Huawei P30 Pro New Edition vs Huawei P40 vs Huawei Mate 30

Design

Despite it has a 2019 design and a classic waterdrop notch instead of a dual punch-hole like the Huawei P40, the Huawei P30 Pro New Edition has a wonderful design. I love it not only because of its high screen-to-body ratio and its curved screen but also because of its elegant and clean glass back. The camera modules of the Huawei P40 and Huawei Mate 30 are big and, just like a lot of people, I am not a fan of big camera modules. Further, Huawei P30 Pro New Edition is the only one to offer the IP68 certification making it waterproof and dustproof, while Huawei P40 and Huawei Mate 30 have just an IP53 certification making them dust resistant and splash resistant. Due to its bigger notch, Huawei Mate 30 looks uglier, but unlike the P30 Pro New Edition, it has a 3D facial recognition system (Huawei P40 has one too). Huawei P40 is way more compact thanks to its much smaller display.

Display

Huawei P30 Pro New Edition, Huawei P40, and Huawei Mate 30 are equipped with OLED display which offers a similar quality. Huawei P30 Pro New Edition and Mate 30 are slightly more interesting because they support the HDR10 technology. The Huawei Mate 30 has the widest panel (6.62 inches), so it is better for productivity users. As we mentioned above, Huawei P40 is a lot more compact because its display has a diagonal of just 6.1 inches. Huawei P30 Pro New Edition sits in the middle with a 6.47-inch diagonal.

Hardware/Software

Huawei P40 and Huawei Mate 30 are powered by the Kirin 990 mobile platform, they support 5G connectivity and they pack up to 8 GB of RAM. In its high-end version, Huawei P40 has a higher amount of internal storage than Huawei Mate 30: up to 256 GB. Huawei P30 Pro New Edition is still fueled by the 2019 Kirin 980 chipset, it has inferior performances compared to its two internal rivals and it does not support 5G. On the other hand, it is the only with Google apps and services out of the box.

Camera

Huawei P40 has the best main sensor included in the rear camera department, but Huawei P30 Pro New Edition has better secondary sensors, including a periscope lens with up to 5x optical zoom, a 20 MP ultrawide sensor and a TOF 3D sensor which is not present on its two opponents. Huawei P40 also offers a better video recording experience and a better front camera department including an IR TOF 3D sensor for 3D facial recognition.

Battery

Huawei introduced ‘Celia’, its own voice assistant at the launch of Huawei P40 series with EMUI 10.1. However, it did not make it to the retail units. But now the company’s homegrown assistant is finally here, albeit, it is limited to certain regions for now.

Due to the ban imposed by the US government on Huawei, the Chinese telecom had to rethink its smartphone division. It introduced Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) along with AppGallery to fill the void left by Google Mobiles Services (GMS) and Play Store.

At the Huawei P40 series launch event, the company also announced EMUI 10.1. The latest version of the brand’s mobile software also included ‘Celia’, its new voice assistant for international markets.

For the unaware, Huawei already has a voice assistant called Xiaoyi in China. It is found on the company’s smart speakers like AI Speaker 2, smartphones, and more. We believe the new Celia voice assistant could be based on Xiaoyi itself.

Having said that, if you own a Huawei P40, P40 Pro or P40 Pro Plus, you can use Celia by changing your locale to either UK, France, Spain, Chile, Mexico or Colombia. That is because the assistant is only limited to these regions as of now.

As far as languages are concerned, it can understand English (UK), Spanish, and French for now. Since Celia is intended as a replacement for Google Assitant, its UI is similar to the latter. Further, it also supports HiVision AI Lens and AI touch-shopping.

The Celia voice assistant is expected to be available on multiple Huawei and Honor smartphones with EMUI 10.1 update in the coming weeks.

In addition to that, the new EMUI update also improves ‘AI Remove Passerby’ feature as well as improves the clarity of pictures with more realistic and natural colors. Also, it optimizes the WiFi speed in some scenarios ensuring improvement in internet experience. Last but not least, it also optimizes the display effect of notifications on the notification panel interface.

Since the update is being seeded out through OTA, it might take time to reach all the devices. Also, we are not sure when these changes will be added to the global version of the P40 series.

Huawei‘s official design team behind its theme recently revealed the shooting process through which the default wallpapers of the P40 series were obtained. These wallpaper images are not rendered images rather photographs of real pieces of ice.

According to the people behind the theme, the team has been exploring the “expressions of a thin piece of ice.” The actual wallpaper image reveals asymmetrical design and curved patterns that may lead some to believe that this is pre-rendered. However, it is actually a piece of ice on which water was poured in drops. Through this, the beautiful and eye catching curved and wavy lines were achieved for the shot.

After adding the water on the ice surface, the team then passed light through the ice cube from multiple angles to attain a different style. Furthermore, the Huawei theme design team even burned the ice cube with fire to shape it in ways they wanted for unique looks.

Looking at the wallpaper images, one might not immediately guess that the pictures are all focused on the ice. But since the process was revealed, it seems like a very creative approach that has brought about such interesting aesthetics to light. The recently launched Huawei P40 series is receiving a new software update in China. The update bumps up the phone’s build number to EMUI 10.1.0.122 and brings a number of new features including a new high megapixel mode in the camera app, new smart video playback option, and a new clock style for AOD.

The new EMUI 10.1.0.122 update for Huawei P40 series weighs 711MB in size. Although the update will nor erase anything, the company suggests creating a backup just in case. The official changelog for the update is as mentioned below (translated from Chinese).

The chipset is simply more powerful than the Kirin 990 found on the Huawei P40. Further, there is more RAM since Huawei P40 only comes with 6 or 8 GB of RAM. On the other hand, you can expand the internal storage of the Huawei P40, while Realme X50 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 10 do not have an expansion slot. The operating system installed is Android 10 customized by proprietary user interfaces.

Camera

The most impressive rear camera department is the one found on the Huawei P40. It includes a 50 MP main sensor with RYYB filter, a telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, a 16 MP ultrawide lens and dual OIS. But Xiaomi Mi 10 is still a pretty nice camera phone: it lacks a telephoto sensor, but it has an amazing 108 MP main lens that can record 8K videos. Realme X50 Pro wins the front camera comparison since it sports a dual setup including an 8 MP ultrawide sensor. TIPA (Technical Image Press Association) has bestowed the Huawei P40 series with the ‘Best Photo Smartphone’ award. It is worth noting that TIPA World Awards are based on innovation and is not judged by the performance of the product.

The Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) is a body consisting of print and media publications associated with the photo/imaging field. It gives away awards annually to the most innovative products under different categories such as cameras, lenses, accessories, services, and tech & design.

The association recently published the winners of the 2020 edition of its Word Awards. In which, the Huawei P40 series as a whole has won the Best Photo Smartphone award. Surprisingly, the P series lineup has been winning this award since the TIPA World Awards was first introduced in 2017.

The first smartphone to win this award was Huawei P10 / P10 Plus in 2017, followed by P20 Pro and P30 Pro in 2018 and 2019 respectively. Since the award is honored based on innovation, we can understand why Huawei P series has been winning it for years.

For instance, this year’s one of the three winners, the Huawei P40 Pro Plus features the largest-ever smartphone camera sensor,  a 50MP RYYB sensor of 1/1.28-inch size with omnidirectional phase detection autofocus. Huawei‘s CEO Yu Chengdong granted an interview to the Chinese media on the sidelines of the P40 series launch event held yesterday. The consumer business head spoke on a number of issues ranging from the reason why the P40 series didn’t feature a 120Hz screen refresh rate, to the company’s phone profit margin and the consumer business projection for this year.

Richar Yu also unveiled the firm’s shipment results and market share for 2019. The CEO hinted that Huawei’s consumer business raked in total revenue of 467.304 billion yuan ($65 billion). This represents a year-on-year increase of 34.0%. Shipment of both Huawei and Honor phones exceeded 240 million units, an increase of more than 16% year-on-year. He also disclosed that the company shipped over 6.9 million units of 5G phones last year.

Yu Chengdong added that with Huawei’s impressive record, the company could easily have dethroned Samsung to become the world’s number one mobile phone manufacturer in terms of shipping volume if not for the US/China trade war. Even with the sanctions, Huawei’s record shipping makes it the number 2 phone manufacturer globally after Samsung.

The Huawei exec also spoke about the DXOMark-topping camera technology onboard its latest smartphones. Yu Chengdong mentioned that Huawei cameras are far ahead of its industry rivals including Apple. He hinted that the Huawei P40 Pro camera parts cost $100 which is quite expensive considering there are other parts sourced from suppliers inside the phone. Thus, revealed that the profit margin for the P40 Pro is very low. He lamented how Apple is selling low-cost things very expensive, while Huawei is selling its products with expensive, cutting-edge technology at cheap prices.

Yu Chengdong equally hinted that Huawei has always invested heavily in R&D. In 2019, Huawei’s R&D expenses reached 131.7 billion yuan (about $18.5 billion US dollars). The huge investment is yielding results, though. Huawei currently holds more than 85,000 patents worldwide, 90% of which are invention patents. In 2019, the Chinese tech giant ranked first in terms of patent applications as its patent filings in the EU reached 3524, WIPO data revealed recently.

Yesterday, Huawei launched the P40 series in China. Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu gave an online interview to the press earlier today. In that, he mentioned the company is barely making a profit from its high-end premium smartphones.

Huawei dethroned Apple to become the world’s second-largest smartphone brand in terms of shipments in 2019. But yet, it’s profit margin is less than that of the Cupertino-based tech giant. This is because the brand’s premium products feature high-end tech, which costs more but still the company sells the final product at a lesser price than its prime competitors.

Mr. Richard Yu said the camera components in the Huawei P40 series alone cost more than $100. He also revealed that the company has so far lost around $60 – $70 million dollars in selling the Mate Xs foldable smartphone, even though it is priced at 16,999 Yuan (~$2267). He further added that the company cannot make a profit unless the price of folding panels goes down. Till then, the retail price of the foldables will remain high.

Mr. Yu also revealed that Huawei’s investment in R&D will likely be the second-largest this year. He also added that some of the competitors merely spend a billion Yuan in R&D, however, his company is investing $20 billion. 

He believes innovation and products should go hand in hand to retain customers and maintain sales. This is why Huawei has been focusing more on research and development. In 2019, the company invested about $18.5 billion in R&D (third-largest), which accounted for 15.3% of its total revenue of 467.3 billion Yuan with 34% YoY growth.

Huawei holds 85,000 patents worldwide, out of which 90% are invention patents. Last year, Huawei was the top patent applier in the European Union with a total count of 3,524.

At the P40 series launch today in China, Huawei announced a new product called AR Maps that it didn’t announce at the launch in Paris last month. It is understandable why Huwaei’s AR Maps is debuting in its home country and the reason is that the places on the maps are only in China.

Huawei says it has focused on details for the AR Map and boasts centimeter accuracy. Huawei says the 3D locations are actually a 1:1 replica of their real-world counterparts.

With the AR Map, users can experience virtually real-world locations. The AR map isn’t just for experiencing virtual locations from the comfort of your home, it actually works like a regular map too and includes live navigation and seamlessly integrates with the real world when you step out of your home.

Huawei says it has also added fun activities such as mythical creatures and virtual characters which can be found when using the map in the real world.

The app is currently available on Huawei AppGallery but as stated above, it only works on the P40 series. Hopefully, more devices are supported soon.

Huawei has officially launched the Huawei P40 series in China today, nearly two weeks after it was announced internationally via an online event. The company has unveiled three flagship smartphones in the domestic market: Huawei P40, Huawei P40 Pro, and Huawei P40 Pro Premium.

Since we already know all about the specs and features of the new devices, let’s first take a look at the China pricing of the Huawei P40 series.

Huawei P40 China Pricing & Availability

The Huawei P40 China pricing is as follows.

The Huawei P40 and P40 Pro models will go on sale in China later today (April 8) at 10 PM. The Huawei P40 Pro Plus will go on sale on June 1, 2020.

Huawei P40 Series Specs

The Huawei P40 series share a similar design profile. So you get a rectangular camera housing at the back with soft-matte glass finish on the P40 and the P40 Pro models. The premium P40 Pro Plus comes with a ceramic back. Up front, the P40 model comes with a 6.1-inch flat OLED display with dual punch-hole cameras on the top left corner. On the other hand, the P40 Pro and Pro Plus models feature an “overflow” curved 6.58-inch display with dual punch-hole cameras in the same position as the P40.

Owing to a smaller display and battery, the standard Huawei P40 is lightweight and compact. The phone weighs just 175 grams and measures just 8.5mm in thickness. In comparison, the P40 Pro weighs 209 grams and is nearly 9mm thick. The P40 is not as water-resistant as the IP68 certified Pro and Plus models, but the IP53 rating ensures it can withstand a few splashes. All three models feature a larger screen fingerprint sensor which is 30 percent larger and faster than its predecessor.

Under the hood, all three models feature Huawei Kirin 990 5G flagship processor, starting with 8GB of RAM. They support NaVIC in addition to GPS, AGPS, Glonass, and BeiDou along with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. The new Huawei P40 series comes with the latest EMUI 10.1 OS based on Android 10 with HMS.

The Huawei P40 comes with a 3800mAh battery with 22.5W SuperCharge charging technology. The P40 Pro and Pro Plus have much faster wired charging solutions for its 4200mAh battery, maxing at 40W. What’s even more interesting is that the Huawei P40 Pro Plus comes with 40W wireless charging support, making it the world’s fastest wireless charging smartphone right now.

The Huawei P40 has a triple camera setup. The P40 Pro has quad-cameras while the P40 Pro Plus has a penta-camera setup.

The standard Huawei P40 comes with a 50MP RYYB f/1.9 UltraVision camera along with a 16MP UltraWide Angle shooter and an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto shooter. The telephoto lens supports 3x optical zoom, 5x hybrid zoom, and 30x digital zoom. The phone gets OIS and AIS for image stabilization and can shoot 4K 60fps videos.

The Huawei P40 Pro comes with a 40MP f/1.8 Ultra Wide Cine lens, an upgraded 50MP RYYB f/1.9 sensor with OIS, an 8MP optical periscope camera, and a ToF sensor. The Huawei P40 Pro Plus has an additional 8MP f/2.4 SuperPeriscope lens. This enables 10x optical, 20x hybrid, and up to 100x digital zoom on the Pro Plus model. On the other hand, the P40 Pro features a 5x optical zoom, 10x hybrid zoom, and 50x digital zoom.

China is an important market for Huawei and the P series has been extremely well received in the domestic market. We can expect the same response for the P40 series as well.

Huawei had just recently launched its latest flagship series, the Huawei P40 lineup. It arrives with top notch specs and features, and according to a new leak, it can soon also be used as a standalone dedicated microphone, thanks to its wireless sound transmission.

From what we know so far, the wireless sound transmission is a feature that is only supported on the Huawei FreeBuds, FlyPods and FreeLance series of audio wearables at the moment. Through these headphones, one can transmit the external sound directly from the Huawei P40’s microphone to the Bluetooth headset or Bluetooth speakers in real time. In other words, it effectively makes the smartphone a dedicated microphone which also allows sound amplification.

There are certain real life applications of this as well. First, the wireless listening can act as a baby monitor, a device that relays sound from an audio capturing device in the infants’ room and an audio output device with the mother when she is not around. Thus, creating a situation that even if she is busy, the sound of the baby crying or other emergencies can be heard from afar through headphones.

Another great example is sound application. Imagine a tour guide giving a lecture on all the rare and ancient artifacts in a museum. It can even be used by teachers for sound amplification, with the Huawei P40 acting as the microphone while a Bluetooth speaker amplifies the sounds so it is better audible for a larger crowd. A few people have also ridiculed the feature, as it also has potential for eavesdropping from a different room, although its viability is still unsure.

UPDATE: A spokesperson for Xiaomi has released an official statement regarding the retail box inscription which has now generated lots of discussions both in China and even overseas. The statement hints that the inscription is actually one of the promotional requirements of its partner (Google) in the latest partnership agreement. The statement revealed that it is similar to the “Powered by Android” booth message and “Intel Inside” stickers that are stamped on Intel-powered laptops.

The reason why it appeared on Xiaomi’s smartphones first is that the Chinese company’s license recently expired and it had to renew the same with the partner which is no doubt Google. The Mi 10 Pro happened to be the first model to be released after the requirement went into effect, the statement hinted.

Rival smartphone OEMs have several ways of trolling each other, especially when promoting their smartphones. We’ve seen Huawei take on Samsung or Apple but in recent times Xiaomi seems to have upped its game in trolling rival smartphone OEMs. 

The Chinese giant recently launched the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro model for the global market in Europe. While the models are already in the market, what many didn’t take note of is an inscription on the retail box of the Mi 10 Pro global version. The inscription just under the Mi 10 Pro branding reads, “with easy access to the Google apps you use most”. This is seen as a direct marketing strategy, taking a dig at Huawei whose smartphones which are very popular in Europe.

Of course, Huawei recently launched the P40 series which is a flagship model like the Mi 10 Pro. Sadly, the P40 series doesn’t come with Google services which would affect its market performance. Xiaomi is looking to improve on its growing popularity in Europe and it is no surprise the company will fight dirty in a bid to see that happen.

The Mi 10 Pro and Huawei P40 Pro seems to have similar starting prices of 999 Euros. So, both models are rivals in several aspects so, one can see where Xiaomi is looking at when drawing up the retail box campaign. In China, it doesn’t matter but in Europe, the presence of Google services will influence the sales of Xiaomi’s flagship.

Huawei Pay makes its debut in Singapore with an exclusive partnership with ICBC (The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China) Singapore Bank. The app will come pre-installed on the Huawei P40 series and can be downloaded on other Huawei / Honor devices from App Gallery.

Huawei Pay launch in Singapore is in an exclusive collaboration with UnionPay. The mobile payment service by Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) can be used for contactless and cashless payments on Huawei / Honor devices.

ICBC Singapore bank is the first and the only bank to support the service for now. As part of the launch offer, users making purchases via Huawei Pay by registering their ICBC UnionPay credit cards between 1 April and 30 September will be rewarded with Huawei Points and cashback up to S$20 on every transaction. Additionally, users will be subjected to a welcome gift of 10 Huawei Points worth S$10, which can be used to make payments in Huawei AppGallery, Themes, Video, Mobile Cloud and more.

Since Huawei Pay supports contactless NFC payments in retail stores, it can be used by tapping supported Huawei / Honor devices on POS (Point-of-Sale) terminals instead of physical credit cards. The service makes use of devices’ biometric authentication system for security.

Additionally, Huawei P40 series will go on sale in Singapore from tomorrow, i.e. April 4. Launch offers include freebies like 50GB Huawei Mobile Cloud for 12 months, Smart View Flip Cover (worth S$58), and Huawei SuperCharge Wireless Car Charger (worth S$98, only P40 Pro). The Huawei P40 and  P40 Pro will be available in Silver Frost, Blush Gold, and Deep Blue Sea color variants for a price tag of S$1,048 and S$1,448 respectively.

In Singapore, the Huawei P40 series can be purchased from Huawei Concept Stores, major telco outlets, selected consumer electronic stores and online retailers like Lazada and Shopee.

Apart from Huawei Pay, Huawei Video is also launching in Singapore with the P40 series availability in the region. The video streaming service offers over 4,000 titles from BBC Studios. Further, the company promises to bring more partners to the platform soon.

Huawei recently announced its Huawei P40 flagship series smartphones which is now set to go on sale in China next week. Now, ahead of that, a tipster has shared an image of Huawei P40 Pro Plus prototype which reveals an easter egg.

It shows that the Leica penta-camera setup on the smartphone has a note that reads “Let It Go”. This confirms that the smartphone, which is codenamed “Elsa” has been named after the “Frozen” movie.

Earlier, there were reports which claimed that the Huawei P40 series smartphones have been codenamed from Frozen, with P40 and the Pro model being codename Anna and Elsa and now the latest tweet from the tipster also reveals that the Pro+ variant also carries the “Elsa” codename.

Ahead of the launch of the P40 series in China, its pricing details have leaked online. As per the leak, the Huawei P40 with 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage will sell for 4,488 Yuan (roughly $632). On the other hand, the Huawei P40 Pro 8GB + 128GB will sell for 5,788 Yuan (~$815) while the 8GB + 256GB variant will be sold for 6,288 Yuan (~$885).

Finally, the most pricey higher-end model, Huawei P40 Pro, is reportedly priced at 7,988 Yuan, which roughly converts to $1,125. This pricing of the smartphones for the Chinese variant is significantly lower than the pricing in the European market.

The Huawei P40 Pro has been up for paid pre-orders in China and recently exceeded 80,000 units. The phone features a 6.58-inch 19.8:9 aspect ratio display with 2640 x 1200 pixels screen resolution and 441 PPI and 90Hz refresh rate. There are two punch-hole cameras in its display —  a 32MP AF camera and another IR camera for Face Unlock and depth sensing.

Under the hood, the device comes powered by the company’s own Kirin 990 processor. It comes with support dual-mode SA/NSA 5G networks and the device also has a 4-layer VC Liquid Super Cooling system to ensure that the smartphone stays cool, even under heavy load and usage.

The P40 Pro smartphone features a quad-camera setup on the back which includes a 40 MP f/1.8 Ultra Wide Cine Lens, an upgraded 50MP RYYB f/1.9 sensor with OIS, a 12 MP Periscope Telephoto camera, and a ToF depth sensor.

The smartphone comes with Wi-Fi 6 Plus support with transfer speeds up to 2600 Mbps. It runs EMUI 10.1 out of the box with the latest Android 10 operating system. Do note that the P40 models don’t have Google services and instead the phone comes with Huawei Mobile Services with its own AppGallery App Store.

This is lower than the European pricing of 799 Euros (roughly 6,195 Yuan). Similarly, the Huawei P40 Pro 8GB + 128GB will sell for 5,788 Yuan (roughly 815 US Dollars) while the 8GB + 256GB variant will be sold for 6,288 Yuan (roughly 885 US Dollars).

Again, these prices are noticeably lower than the foreign launch that had the Huawei P40 Pro priced at 999 EUR for the 256GB models (roughly 7,745). Finally, the most pricey higher end model, Huawei P40 Pro, is reportedly priced at 7,988 Yuan (roughly 1,125 US Dollars), which is again lower than the 1,399 EUR price tag in Europe (roughly 10,845 Yuan).

This makes the Huawei P40 series about 30 percent lower in price when compared to the global launch variant. Notably, it is about 200-300 Yuan higher than the last year’s Huawei P30 series, although that is expected since the newer version feature 5G networking with the general pricing logic also being considered. Unfortunately, this has yet to be confirmed by Huawei. So, it is unclear if this is the official pricing from the Chinese tech giant. Thus, take this report with a grain of salt for now.

Huawei officially unveiled the P40 series and Huawei Watch GT 2e last week at an online-only event in Paris. Long before that in November 2019, the Chinese telecom giant also launched MatePad Pro, its flagship tablet in China, which they eventually brought to Europe in February 2020. Now, the company is set to bring all of the above-mentioned products to Malaysia very soon.

Huawei has been facing difficulties in selling its devices in the international markets after the US government added it to the entity list in May 2019. But still, the company has been trying hard to bring its innovation to other nations apart from its home country China.

The biggest hurdle for Huawei to sell devices running Android is that it no longer has access to Google Mobile Services. Thus, all of its new Android devices including smartphones and tablets are devoid of Google Play Store and other most-used necessary Google services. This makes the Huawei-made devices a tough sell in global markets.

Thus, to overcome this situation, the Chinese tech giant released HMS Core (Huawei Mobile Services), which comes pre-installed on new devices from the company including the Huawei P40 Series and Huawei MatePad Pro that are about to launch in Malaysia. On the other hand, the Huawei Watch GT 2e, which is a sporty makeover of the original Huawei Watch GT 2 runs proprietary software.

The Malaysian launch, as well as the pricing of these Huawei devices, are unknown at the moment. However, the company is giving away a RM 30 discount voucher for simply subscribing to updates on these products on its official website. Ironically, this voucher cannot be used to buy any of the aforementioned products launching soon in the country.

Huawei has clarified that all the parts used inside the P40 have been obtained legally and in compliance to export control regulations of the US. The company’s official statement is added below:

“Huawei has always complied with any export control regulations of various countries, including the United States. All the product materials are obtained legally from our global partners, and we insist on working with our partners to provide consumers with high-quality products and services.” 

Huawei has been found to still be using US-made components in its latest flagship model, the P40, despite having been banned and blacklisted by the US Government last year.

Back in 2019, Huawei was blacklisted and placed in the “Entity List” by the US Commerce Department. This banned the Chinese tech giant from buying or selling products to or from other US based companies. Google is one such example as the company can no longer ship its smartphones with Google Play services or other Google apps.

Now, a report from Financial Times has revealed through a breakdown of the Huawei P40, that the device still features parts made in the US. The device was recently launched by the company and is its latest flagship model. But for those unaware, American based companies are specifically prohibited from selling components to Huawei, unless they receive a special license and authorization.

Huawei recently launched the P40 series flagship smartphones with support for panoramic VR wallpapers. Today, the company has launched the official theme for the P40’s panoramic VR wallpapers on its network.

It is not limited to the P40 series smartphones and is available for multiple devices from Huawei as well as its sub-brand Honor. Reports indicate that the Panoramic VR wallpapers can ben activated on Huawei’s Mate 20 and Mate 30 series as well as P20, P30, and the newly launched P40 series.

On the other hand, the Honor V20 as well as the Honor V30 come with support for this. The company has officially launched three sets of themes for VR panoramic wallpapers — Infinite Aurora Vision VR Panorama, Brilliant Star River VR Panorama, and Senlu Xianlu VR Panorama.

The company says that this feature offers the ultimate visual retreat, breaking the boundaries of time and space. It also has 360-degree VR panoramic gravity sensing lock screen which is claimed to be a whole different gameplay.

That may be the case of Huawei P40, Oppo Find X2 and Xiaomi Mi 10. If you do not need the most impressive camera ever and a few other special features such as a waterproof design and wireless charging, they can let you save a lot of money while still being the perfect devices for you. But which is the best device for your needs from this trio? Through this comparison, we will try to give you the answer to this question.

Huawei P40 vs Oppo Find X2 vs Xiaomi Mi 10

Design

Oppo Find X2 is one step forward when it comes to the aesthetics, at least in its ceramic variant. Besides offering a very high screen-to-body ratio and a camera module comprising all the camera elements, the device has a ceramic back and it is also splash resistant with the IP54 certification. While Oppo Find X2 offers a more premium design, Huawei P40 has a more compact body. With its smaller display, it is much easier for one-handed use and to keep in a pocket. But its huge camera module and its big punch hole are not the best solutions to make a beautiful phone. Xiaomi Mi 10 sits in the middle but unlike the Huawei P40 and the Oppo Find X2 it does not offer any protection against dust and water.

Display

Oppo Find X2 is one of the best smartphones for display quality. It has exactly the same panel as the Oppo Find X2 Pro and it is superior to both Huawei P40 and Xiaomi Mi 10 by a huge margin. It offers a high Quad HD+ resolution, a 120 Hz refresh rate, a 240 Hz touch-sampling rate, up to 800 nits brightness, HDR and complete DCI-P3 gamut. The second place goes to Xiaomi Mi 10 boasting a 90 Hz refresh rate, a 180 Hz touch-sampling rate, and HDR10+. Huawei P40 is disappointing if we compare its display to Xiaomi Mi 10 and Oppo Find X2, but it has a more compact size.

Hardware/Software

With the Oppo Find X2 and Xiaomi Mi 10, you get a better chipset: the Snapdragon 865 paired with a Snapdragon X55 which is an external 5G modem supporting both sub-6 GHz frequencies and mmWave. You even get exactly the same memory configurations, so you should not notice big differences in performance. What differs is the software side, but excellent software in both cases. The ColorOS 7 contains several improvements and new features compared to the sixth version, and the MIUI 11 is amazing as well. Huawei P40 has a less performing chipset and less RAM, and it does not come with Google services out of the box.

Camera

If we talk about the camera we still can not give you a definitive verdict since we still did not test all the cameras. While Xiaomi Mi 10 might offer better capabilities at video recording, Oppo Find X2 and Huawei P40 may actually give you a better overall experience. But specs on the paper are not enough to judge the overall quality of these devices like camera phones.

Battery

Xiaomi Mi 10 is the winner of the battery comparison since it packs a way bigger 4780 mAh battery which should last a lot more on a single charge. It is also the only to support wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. On the other hand, Oppo Find X2 has the fastest wired charging technology with a power of 65W. The phone is able to go from 0 to 100 percent in just 38 minutes.

Price

Huawei P40 and Xiaomi Mi 10 have a starting price of €800 globally, Oppo Find X2 will cost €999 (12/256 GB). There is not a definitive winner of this comparison, but I would not go for the Huawei P40 for that price. Oppo Find X2 is my favorite one due to its amazing display and fastest charging technology, as well as an amazing triple camera. But Xiaomi Mi 10 will offer a longer battery life and wireless charging, so it is still a valid handset.

Huawei, the known electronics brand, is collaborating with Gentle Monster to bring a new pair of smart glasses. The announcement for the new wearables arrived during the flagship Huawei P40 series launch yesterday (26th March 2020) and should serve as a unique peripheral to the series as well.

The new pair of smart glasses with Gentle Monster marks the first major upgrade after the company launched a similar product last year. Yesterday, Huawei announced its P40 series of flagship smartphones. All the three models in the series feature OLED panels but in different sizes with varying resolution and refresh rates. And now, BOE’s VP confirms that the entire series uses panels made by BOE, which also happens to supply displays to Huawei for its Mate Xs foldable smartphone. 

The display is one of the most important components of a smartphone. There are only few OLED panel manufacturers in the world and one of them is BOE. A few hours after the announcement of the P40 series, BOE’s Vice President proudly announced on Weibo that all the new premium smartphones by Huawei including P40, P40 Pro, P40 Pro Plus, and Mate Xs use their flexible OLED panel.

BOE, a Chiese display manufacturer has been lately emerging as an alternate OLED supplier to many companies to reduce their dependency on Samsung. Lenovo is also using panels made by BOE in its ThinkPad X1 Fold and Moto Razr foldable smartphone. On top of it, BOE will be also supplying OLED panels to Apple starting this year.

The Huawei P40 series is targeted at mobile photography but the devices in the series also sport modern display design, especially the Pro and Pro Plus models. The display on these phones are curved at all the four sides and measure 6.58-inches with a resolution of 2640 x 1200 pixels and 90Hz refresh rate. The company markets it as ‘overflow display’ as it resembles a cup filled with water up to the brim. 

On the other hand, the standard P40 features a flat 6.1-inches display with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels. It also lacks the 90Hz refresh rate from the pro models but it has the same cutout on the top left corner of the screen to accommodate selfie camera, depth camera, and IR sensor.

Huawei announced three new devices at its online conference in Europe, including the compact Huawei P40. We have already covered the Huawei P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus in detail in our previous story here. So let’s take a closer look at what the standard P40 model has to offer.

The Huawei P40 comes with the exact same design as the P40 Pro. So you have a premium soft matte finish at the back in five color options: Silver Frost, Ice White, Blush Gold, Black, and Deep Sea Blue. The phone features just three camera sensors at the back but the rectangular camera housing remains the same size as the Pro and Plus variants. Since the phone comes with a smaller display and battery, it is lightweight and compact. The phone weighs just 175 grams which is pretty light and measures just 8.5mm in thickness. In comparison, the P40 Pro weighs 209 grams and is nearly 9mm thick.

Huawei has cut down on premium features on the standard P40 to keep the pricing low. So instead of the “overflow” curved display, you get a flat 6.1-inch FHD+ 2340 x 1080 Pixels OLED display on the front with dual punch-hole cameras on the top left corner. The phone is not as water-resistant as the IP68 certified Pro and Plus models, but the IP53 rating ensures it can withstand a few splashes.

Huawei P40 Specs

Under the hood, the Huawei P40 comes with the Kirin 990 5G processor with support for SA/NSA 5G standards. You have 8GB of RAM onboard with 128GB of storage. The phone comes in dual SIM and single SIM variants. Note that the single SIM model also accepts an additional eSIM. As for the battery, you get a 3800mAh capacity one inside with 22.5W SuperCharge charging technology. The standard P40 model does not support Wireless Charging.

Interestingly, the new Huawei P40 models support NaVIC in addition to GPS, AGPS, Glonass, and BeiDou. You also get support for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. It runs on EMUI 10.1 based on Android 10 OS with HMS (unfortunately no GMS).

Coming to the cameras, the Huawei P40 comes with a pretty strong triple camera setup. It consists of a 50MP f/1.9 UltraVision camera along with a 16MP UltraWide Angle shooter and an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto shooter. The telephoto lens supports 3x optical zoom, 5x hybrid zoom, and 30x digital zoom. The phone gets OIS and AIS for image stabilization and can shoot 4K 60fps videos.

There’s a 32MP selfie shooter upfront with an IR depth sensor for bokeh. Like the Pro models, the standard P40 also supports 4K 60fps video recording but it doesn’t have autofocus.

Huawei P40 Pricing & Availability

The Huawei P40 starts at €799 ($880) for the 8GB RAM and 128GB model and goes on sale on the same day as the P40 Pro: April 7.

Huawei will be announcing its latest flagship, P40 series, later today (26th March 2020). It is the successor to the P30 series and sports top notch specs and features. However, just before the launch, the company’s promotional images and videos regarding the high end P40 Pro have been leaked.

Looking at the promotional images, the design of the Huawei P40 Pro resembles all the renders that we have previously covered. The rear features a quad camera solution while the front features a punch hole setup for the dual selfie shooters. The images depict a glass back for the Huawei P40 Pro, with the front being mostly covered by the display with minimal bezels, notch, and chin.

Although the official announcement is still a while away, previous leaks have hinted at the device’s possible specifications. The Huawei P40 Pro is expected to sport the company’s proprietary Kirin 990 5G SoC. It will be paired with at least 8GB of RAM and either 128 or 256GB of internal storage. Reportedly, the display will be a 6.58 inch AMOLED panel with a 90Hz high refresh rate.

Update: The video shared below has been making rounds online on Weibo. It showcases the Huawei P40 Pro’s ToF lens alongside its impressive 50x SuperSensing zoom technology. Furthermore, the video also showcases the device’s low light capabilities as well.

For optics, the P40 Pro may house a quad camera module with a primary lens alongside a ToF, ultra wide angle, and a dedicated telephoto zoom lens. The battery is said to be a large 4,200mAh pack with support for up to 40W fast charging. It will also support IP68 water and dust resistance and will ship with the latest EMUI 10.1 custom skin based on Android 10 OS. The official launch conference starts soon, so stay tuned.

Huawei, the known electronics brand, is preparing for the launch of its latest flagship series, the Huawei P40. However, just a couple of hours prior to its official launch, the device has been spotted on Geekbench with 8GB of RAM.

For those unaware, Geekbench is a popular benchmarking software, which is often used to test the capabilities of a smartphone. So, a new smartphone launch would generally garner tests to be showcased later during the official launch event. Earlier today (26th March 2020), the Huawei P40 was spotted on the Geekbench database and one of the things that were revealed was its memory among other things as well.

According to the Geekbench listing, Huawei P40 scored 742 points in the single core test while the multi core test had it receive 2686 points. The numbers were achieved on the latest Geekbench 5.1.0 build that also revealed the device will run the latest Android 10 OS out of the box. Under the hood, the handset will sport Huawei’s proprietary processor, the Kirin 990 5G SoC. 8GB of RAM has also been confirmed to be one of the configurations.

Unfortunately, finer details like the battery and storage capacity are still unknown. Although, previous certifications have already revealed plenty of information; such as P40 supporting 22.5W fast charging while the P40 Pro features a 40W fast charging, according to China’s 3C certification. For optics, it is expected to feature a triple camera setup on the rear and a punch hole camera on the front. This will include the primary sensor, ultra wide angle and ToF lens as well. The Huawei P40 series of smartphones will be made official later today. The lineup includes Huawei P40, Huawei P40 Pro and another device called Huawei P40 Pro Plus (or Pro+) 5G. The latter was previously rumored to debut as Huawei P40 Pro Premium. The P40 Pro+ 5G will be an advanced version of the P40 Pro smartphone. Reliable tipster Roland Quandt has shared some key details on the Huawei P40 Pro+ few hours ahead of the launch.

The new leak reveals that the Huawei P40 Pro Plus 5G will be powered by the Kirin 990 5G chipset which also powers the P40 and P40 Pro. The P40 Pro+ will be the company’s first smartphone to arrive with a 120Hz refresh rate supporting display. The size of the screen will 6.58 inches. The P40 also features the same-sized screen but carries support for 90Hz refresh rate. Both phones are said to arrive with same dimensions.

The P40 Pro has 8 GB of RAM, but its Plus variant is expected to arrive with 12 GB of RAM. Its Plus edition is said to house the same battery. The Pro model supports 40W SuperCharge, but its advanced version will be arriving with faster charging.

Quandt had recently revealed that the Huawei P40 with 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage will be priced at 799 euros (~$871). The 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage and 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage will be respectively priced at 999 euros (~$1,089) and 1,099 euros (~$1,199). There is no word on the pricing of the Huawei P40 Pro+ 5G.

EMUI 10.1 has been long tipped to be released soon. Earlier today, Huawei confirmed it to debut on P40 series, whose launch is set for tomorrow. Additionally, the official Twitter account of EMUI has been teasing the new features for a couple of days now.

EMUI 10.1 Official Teasers

The official EMUI handle on Twitter posted the first teaser picture on March 23. This image displays a telephone with ‘Discover a Smart Way to Mingle’ text written below it followed by the release date, which happens to 26th March (tomorrow). Although the poster does not reveal anything, we expect it to be some new feature to enhance group calls, which might be applicable for both audio and video calls.

Coming to the second teaser poster, which the account posted yesterday (March 24), has a desk with a laptop, envelope, coffee, snacks and a phone on it. Below that, the text reads ‘Discover a smarter Way to Multitask’. According to us, this teaser has to do with new improvements the company has planned for the already available ‘Multi-Screen Collaboration’ feature, which will further enhance multi-tasking on devices running EMUI 10.1.

Lastly, the third teaser which was posted today is a picture of a handheld gaming console with a quote saying ‘Discover a Smarter Way to Unwind’. Here, the image itself gives away that it is relating to gaming on smartphones. Probably, the new iteration of EMUI will bring an improved GPU Turbo and extra-added features to improve the overall gaming experience.

Anyway, we don’t have to wait too long as everything about EMUI 10.1 will be official tomorrow at the Huawei P40 series launch.

Huawei is gearing up to unveil the P40 series on March 26, which happens to be tomorrow. Now, just a day ahead of the launch, the company confirms the debut of EMUI 10.1 on these smartphones. This goes in line with a report from last month which suggested the same.

The EMUI official account on Weibo posted a teaser poster for EMUI 10.1. It mentions the new iteration of Huawei’s Android skin to be announced alongside the P40 series launch tomorrow. Unfortunately, the teaser image does not reveal features of the upcoming new version of UI. Instead, it simply says ‘Wisdom, Wonderful Unlimited’ (translated).

If you look back at the history of EMUI releases, we can clearly get the picture that the new improved x.1 version of the software have been debuting on the Huawei P series for the last two years. For example, EMUI 8.1 debuted on P20 series, followed by EMUI 9.1 on P30 series, and now we will get to see EMUI 10.1 on the upcoming P40 series.

However, we are uncertain of the new features and improvements it will come with. Last year’s EMUI 9.1 brought new notable features like EROFS file system, GPU Turbo 3.0, and ARK compiler. This time around, the company may bring features related to HMS (Huawei Mobile Services) core, which the company depends upon to sell its devices in global markets.

Huawei will be announcing the P40 flagships tomorrow. Recent reports have revealed that the Chinese manufacture will be also debuting other products like Huawei Watch GT 2e alongside the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro phones. Ahead of the launch, Winfuture.de carried a detailed report that revealed the entire specifications and pricing of the P40 and P40 Pro smartphones.

Huawei P40 Pro specifications and price (Rumored)

The Huawei P40 Pro has a 6.58-inch OLED display that produces full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2640 pixels and a refresh rate of 90Hz. The OLED panel that a slightly wide pill-shaped cutout to house three items such as a 32-megapixel selfie camera, a depth sensor and a face unlock 3D sensor.

The rear side of the phone features an OIS-assisted 50-megapixel UltraVision camera with f/1.9 aperture mainly for capturing photos. It supports Octa Phase Detection and pixel binning technology. AI kicks in to shoot photos in a 1.7 second period and automatically chooses the best shot. There is a 40-megapixel second lens for mainly recording videos. Next lens in the camera setup is the SuperSensing telephoto shooter of 12-megapixel that supports 50x hybrid zoom. Lastly, the camera system features a macro camera and a depth sensor. The first two lenses in the camera setup are RYYB sensors. The front and rear cameras of the phone can capture 4K videos. With ISO sensitivity of 51200, the P40 Pro can cope well in poor lighting conditions.

The Huawei P40 Pro’s SoC is coupled with graphene-assisted cooling. It houses a 4,200mh battery that supports 40W SuperCharge. It is an IP68 rated dustproof and water-resistant device. The P40 Pro has 8 GB of RAM and it will come in 128 GB and 256 GB storage editions in the home market. The P40 Pro will start at 999 euros (~$1,079) and it come in silver, gold, white and black colors.

The Huawei P40 has a 6.1-inch OLED panel that offers 1080+ resolution and 60Hz refresh rate. It does not feature a 3D sensor but inherits the P40 Pro’s two frontal shooters. The rear camera system of the phone features a 50-megapixel UltraVision lens with OIS, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens with OIS and a 16-megapixel ultrawide sensor.

The P40 houses a 3,800mAh battery with 22.5W SuperCharge support. The device lacks IP rating and internal cooling system. The P40 will come with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage in Europe and it will cost 799 euros (~$863). It will have the same color variants as the Pro model.

The Kirin 990 5G is present under the hood of the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro phones. The report also stated that the Huawei P40 duo will come in LTE versions in some regions. Recent reports have also revealed that there is another phone in the series called Huawei P40 Pro PE (Premium Edition). It is expected to arrive as the company’s first phone with penta-lens setup. The German publication did not reveal any details on the P40 Pro PE.

The Huawei P40 series will come with Android 10 and the company’s AppGallery. It won’t have Google Mobile Services (GMS) preinstalled. The P40 and P40 Pro will have a new type of memory card standard called NanoMemory 2. Both phones also have in-display fingerprint scanners.
