Huawei recently rolled out a new HarmonyOS NEXT update for the Pura 80 series in China, and it’s a hefty one at 1.52GB. The version 5.1.0.217 SP2 update brings the usual system optimizations along with a handful of tweaks to the Calendar and Memo apps.

But what makes this update stand out is a small yet significant change. For the first time in years, Huawei is openly listing the processor inside its flagship phones.

Kirin 9020 confirmed!

On the Pura 80 Pro+’s About page, the phone is now confirmed to be running on Huawei’s in-house Kirin 9020 chip, something we had long suspected. 

The Kirin 9020 is built on a 1+3+4 CPU architecture (one 2.5GHz large core, three 2.15GHz mid-cores, and four 1.6GHz efficiency cores) paired with Huawei’s in-house Maleoon 920 GPU.

It’s the first time in years that Huawei has openly shared a chip detail on its device. The company stopped naming processors or even acknowledging them in the launch events since the Kirin 9000 series.

The reason was clear, though. The decision came as US restrictions hit its supply chain and raised uncertainty around Huawei’s chip development. For years, every new Huawei phone launch led to online speculation and teardown reports just to figure out what processor was inside.

That seems to be changing now, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Huawei rolls out similar updates to the rest of its lineup soon.

Huawei‘s latest flagship smartphone has proven itself again. Despite the various restrictions faced by the brand, its Pura 80 Ultra model has been crowned as the best camera smartphone by DxOMark, dethroning Oppo’s best with a highest ever score of 175 points.

To recall, the Oppo Find X8 Ultra achieved the top spot in the DxOMark rankings back in June with an impressive score of 169 points. This model received praise in almost every aspect of the testing. But just a short while after, Huawei dethroned it with the Pura 80 Ultra. DxOMark’s test had the company’s newest flagship achieve the best scores for main camera performance, bokeh shots, and telephoto images.

Even the video department got an excellent rating of 166 points (180 points in photos). DxOMark stated that the Pura 80 Ultra offers great detail in both photos and videos in nearly every condition. Despite facing some inconsistencies in color and slight overexposure, Huawei’s premium model featured great autofocus, good skin tones, wide dynamic range, lower noise levels, and the best phone for portraits.

For those unaware, the Chinese tech giant announced the Pura 80 Ultra with its proprietary XMAGE tech. The main camera is a 50MP 1-inch sensor with a f/1.6-4 variable aperture. This is paired with a 40MP ultra wide angle lens, a 1.5MP spectrum sensor, and a 50MP + 12.5MP dual periscope telephoto lens setup, which offers 3.7x and 9.4x optical zoom (83mm and 212mm focal length, respectively).

This is the footage captured by a regular telephoto lens, which is a single lens connected to a single sensor, a setup used by iPhone, Samsung, and vivo. Except for Huawei! It uses the same sensor across two lenses. Now, if we compare the vivo X200 Ultra with it, which one will win in imaging performance?

Focal Length Coverage and Specifications

When it comes to telephoto imaging, vivo has already set a high bar. It’s three Zeiss lenses cover three golden focal lengths: the 35mm main lens mimics the human eye’s perspective, while the 85mm lens caters to creative shooting. And let’s not forget the 135mm for portraits.

Interestingly, Huawei offers a similar focal length, but with a game-changing twist: one sensor shared by two telephoto lenses. This innovative design enables seamless switching between two focal lengths, delivering 3.7x and 9.4x optical zoom without compromising image quality.

When it comes to sensors, the two phones are very different. Let’s break down the specs:

Huawei Pura 80 Ultra features a 1-inch 50MP sensor for its main camera, packing both a higher pixel count and a larger sensor size.

vivo X200 Ultra equips its main and ultra-wide lenses with Sony’s LYT-818 sensor, while the telephoto uses a Samsung HP9 sensor, for native 85mm optical shooting. Surprisingly, it holds its own in both pixel density and sensor dimensions.

Mid-Telephoto Performance

For this imaging review, we focused primarily on telephoto capabilities. The Pura 80 Ultra switches from the main camera to a telephoto, equivalent of 89mm at 3.7x zoom, while the X200 Ultra offers a 3.7x equivalent of 85mm; this gives the X200 Ultra a slightly wider field of view. During shooting, we controlled the framing to maintain consistency.

In the first set of native 3.7x low-light shots, the two phones show different styles. The Pura 80 Ultra impresses with buttery-smooth light transitions, preventing blown-out highlights, and retaining shadow detail. It even softens the textures, capturing the scene’s natural lighting. On the other hand, the vivo X200 Ultra sharpens highlights while intensifying shadow contrast, leveraging lighting to sculpt a dramatic, dimensional effect. This makes the subject stand out, though at the cost of some shadow information. Remarkably, despite these differences, both devices deliver almost the same image sharpness and clarity.

In another set of shots, both phones deliver solid sharpness, revealing clear details like hair strands, fabric textures, hats, and markings on the watch. This shows their telephoto lenses excel at capturing fine details in low light. However, the vivo X200 Ultra slightly under-represents shadow and background details. As for which handles details better, that’s a call for you to make.

Color Performance in Complex Scenes

In terms of color reproduction, the Pura 80 Ultra excels in accuracy. It renders the pink hair, red hat, and purple eyes of the figurine close to their real-life hues, with natural color transitions, and no obvious color casts. The vivo X200 Ultra, however, maintains its signature style, with the tones being very vivid. For example, the pink hair shows heightened saturation, creating a more vibrant visual impact but deviating slightly from the authentic color. Huawei’s Ultra Chroma camera notably stands out, ensuring precise color fidelity even in complex lighting scenarios. To validate this, we also compared portrait and pet close-up shots.

Let’s focus on the white T-shirt and skin tones. Even with good lighting, vivo doesn’t oversaturate colors anymore—but there’s still a big color shift. The white balance looks greenish. Meanwhile, the Pura 80 Ultra nails natural skin tones way better than vivo here.

The color issues we talked about earlier? They’re still here. See, vivo doesn’t have a color temperature sensor, so the white balance is all over the place. It tries to fix it, but keeps messing up the correction. Huawei, though, their colors are way closer to what we see. Now, here’s the thing, Pura 80 Ultra is better in color accuracy, but when it comes to fine details—especially hair and fur—vivo handles that better.

Detail Handling

Let’s talk about detail loss. The Pura 80 Ultra shows blurry hair edges—you can’t make out fine strands. It relies more on hardware advantages. Not like the vivo X200 Ultra, which nails those tiny hair textures and keeps that natural, fluffy look. That’s probably because vivo is more optimized for complex scenes, so hair just comes out better.

Second issue: unnatural transitions. Where hair meets skin or the background, Huawei’s performance is a bit off, like places around the forehead and sideburns, the edges are harsh, which kills the softness in portraits. Vivo, though, has smoother transitions; hair blends into the background way more naturally.

Now, about algorithms. Vivo had some glitches early on, but system updates fixed that pretty well. Huawei still lags here, to be honest. But both have different styles. So, which one do you like more?

Telephoto Beyond 200mm (10x Zoom)

Now let’s look at 10x zoom, the focal length that separates these two phones’ performance. Starting with the first set, beyond the color differences we saw earlier, the X200 Ultra’s main issue here is over-reliance on algorithms. Take this close-up of a jar—it has tons of details and textures. On the X200 Ultra shot, so many details are masked or blurred by the algorithm, which is a real shame.

Huawei, though, because of its larger sensor, doesn’t need heavy noise reduction or AI work, so it keeps way more brightness and detail. That bigger sensor gives it a clear edge here. This set also perfectly backs up my earlier point. The Pura 80 Ultra keeps way more shadow details—take the buildings at the back, for example. It outperforms in both detail and dynamic range.

In this scene, the color problem is still here. Huawei leans toward authentic colors, while vivo enhances everything, making the image more pleasing to the eye.

When shooting outdoor scenes, this set of photos shows that the Pura 80 Ultra excels in the details of the sky, plants, and architecture. Vivo boosts contrast to enhance visual appeal, but that highlights slightly weaker resolution and detail retention.

Now let’s compare the main and ultra-wide lenses. Which phone do you think will take the crown here?

Video Stabilization

In terms of videos, I think vivo performs extremely well. It has one more LOG mode than Huawei. Regarding the video stabilization, you can get the answer by comparing the video.

User Experience and Selection

During shooting, we also noticed an issue: if we move fast, the Pura 80 Ultra will show a jelly effect, indicating that the CMOS reading speed is relatively slow. Although vivo also has this problem, it is not particularly obvious. The imaging performance between the two phones is not significant. From my experience, vivo tends to focus more on algorithms, while Huawei relies more on the hardware. In terms of details and night performance, Huawei is more outstanding.

However, I should also mention that the lens durability of the Pura 80 Ultra may be a major challenge. Although it can bring a great imaging experience, if you accidentally break it, the cost of repairing the lens will be expensive. In addition, during use, the vivo’s lens has a shaking sensation, and Huawei’s dual telephoto lenses have an obvious mechanical effect when switching.

Summary

Overall, the imaging styles of these two phones differ significantly. The Pura 80 Ultra pursues ultimate telephoto image quality, with its images leaning more toward natural color reproduction. vivo, on the other hand, balances portrait photography and video creation. Therefore, if you want to choose one between them, consider your own needs first.

The device uses a 4,400mm² Cryo-Velocity vapor chamber and an added graphite cooling layer in the rear panel to manage heat. It comes with 12GB LPDDR5X RAM and up to 512GB UFS 4.0 storage.

The rear camera setup includes a 50MP LYT-700 sensor and a 50MP 2x telephoto lens. It skips an ultra-wide camera but adds value with a 5,850mAh battery, 80W charging, IP65 rating, and a customizable “Plus Key” on the side. The starting price is Rs. 54,999 ($638).

The F7 packs a 7550mAh battery, supports 90W fast charging and 22.5W reverse charging, and uses a metal frame. It holds IP66, IP68, and IP69 ratings and starts at Rs. 31,999 ($372). For power users, it’s one of the most aggressive value plays of the month.

Motorola Edge 60

Motorola introduced the Edge 60 as a durable and well-balanced midrange device in the Indian market. It comes with a 6.67-inch quad-curved pOLED panel at 1.5K resolution and 4500 nits peak brightness, protected by Gorilla Glass 7i. The phone uses the Dimensity 7300 SoC and runs Android 15 with 12GB of RAM.

The device features a total of four cameras, including a 50MP main, 50MP ultra-wide, 50MP front, and a 10MP telephoto lens. It is built for durability with IP68, IP69, and MIL-STD-810H certifications, indicating strong resistance to water, dust, and extreme conditions. The starting price is Rs. 25,999 ($302).

Infinix GT 30 Pro

Xiaomi’s June 26 Mega Event

Xiaomi Mix Flip 2

The Chinese tech giant just confirmed the official launch date for the overseas market. The Pura 80 lineup will make its global debut in Dubai on 10th July 2025. As of right now, Huawei has yet to confirm the availability details, so its unclear which regions it will release in. To recall, the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra is the flagship model, which brings the world’s first dual lens telephoto shooter.

That’s not all, the primary sensor is a 1-inch 50MP camera with a f/1.6-4 variable aperture, which is paired with a 40MP ultra wide angle lens, a 1.5MP spectrum sensor, and a 50MP + 12.5MP dual periscope telephoto lens setup (3.7x and 9.4x optical zoom). On the other hand, the Pura 80 Pro models also pack the 50MP 1-inch RYYB primary sensor with variable aperture support and a 40MP ultra wide angle lens, but the periscope telephoto shooter only offers 4x optical zoom.

Huawei’s entire Pura 80 series is equipped with the Kirin 8020 SoC, support for wired and wireless fast charging, and satellite communication as well. These are flagship devices with a premium price tag, so we can expect these models to start from 1,000 US Dollars in the global market as well.

However, the Pura 80 Ultra supports an additional 20W reverse wireless charging, compared to the Pro+ which lacks this feature. This makes the Ultra slightly more versatile, especially for users who reverse-charge accessories like earbuds or other phones.

Verdict:
Specifications are nearly identical, but the Pura 80 Ultra offers an edge with enhanced reverse wireless charging, which adds functional value without compromising on performance.

Camera

Main and Secondary Lenses:
The Ultra features a more advanced quad-camera setup with two periscope lenses: a 50MP 3.7x zoom and a 12.5MP 9.4x zoom. This setup enables significantly more flexible telephoto performance. Here we have the brand new HUAWEI Pura 80 Pro+, I am sure you still remember the Pura 70 Ultra which has a retractable lens. Well, on the Pura 80 series, it’s gone. But the new series comes with a ground-breaking lens structure inside, along with some new camera features. We are lucky enough to have it (China version) right after the launch event, now let’s take a first look.

Camera

We were invited to the launch event, where my colleague experienced the legendary Switchable Tele Lens, meaning “one sensor, with two focal length lenses” on the Pura 80 Ultra.

The telephoto cameras of this phone share the same sensor to achieve two different focal lengths, and the movable prism is the key to this technology. When using the 10x telephoto, it is the same as a normal periscope telephoto. When switching to the 3.7x camera, the prism moves to the second lens.

There are many advantages to doing this, the most obvious of which is saving space inside the phone. Compared to other 4-lens phones, the camera module on this phone is a little smaller. The space saved can be used to fit a larger battery or a larger Vapor Chamber.

The second advantage is image quality. As you all know, Sony has achieved 85-170mm optical zoom on mobile phones, which changes the focal length by moving the lens back and forth. Although the principle of the Pura 80 Ultra is similar, the 3.7x to 10x is still digitally cropped. Because HUAWEI knows that the optical quality of a zoom lens is hard to match that of a fixed-focus lens, they chose to make two fixed-focus lenses instead of one zoom lens. The photo quality must be better.

In addition to the telephoto camera, there is also a new one-inch main sensor made in China, which is worth paying attention to. The retractable structure is cancelled, the variable aperture is still there, and the dynamic range is further improved. I am looking forward to using it for more photography creations, and I will definitely do a more detailed camera review after we buy the Pura 80 Ultra.

Pura 80 Pro+

I have also listed the other camera specs in a table, all of which are world-class. Except for the camera part, other specs of the Pro+ and Ultra versions are almost the same. So… (Take out the phone) I borrowed the Pro+ from HUAWEI, and now let’s talk about the more affordable Pura 80 Pro+.

Design

The overall design of the Pura 80 series has not changed much compared to the 70 series. The camera module is still placed in the upper left corner, but it is a little bigger. The module isn’t in the way of the finger, which is a good thing. The frame is arc-shaped, so the phone is like a pebble with a screen.

The one we borrowed is the bright black version with a ceramic coating, so you can really use it as a mirror. One controversial thing is that the fingerprint recognition sensor has been moved from under the screen to the power button. Some people like it and some don’t. I am not sure what I think yet.

Although due to the limitations of HarmonyOS NEXT, we cannot know its specific processor model. But according to the data of GeekBench 6, it must be Kirin 9020 at least. Maybe it is the new Kirin 9030? I don’t know, we still need time to explore.

Screen & Others

The screen of Pura 80 Pro+ does not look changed, and it is also a popular four-curved screen recently. The maximum brightness has increased, and there are not many upgrades other than that.

The battery is definitely bigger, it is a 5700mAh battery plus 100W wired charging power, which is what a flagship phone should have. Of course, there are also features like 80W wireless charging and satellite communication. Anyway, you have spent $1,100, HUAWEI will embrace your requests.

It is obvious that the Pura 80 series has evolved again. Familiar but refined design

All four Pura 80 models share a sleek design language, with the Pro and Ultra models getting a touch more flair. The Pura 80 sticks to a 6.6-inch flat OLED panel, while the Pro, Pro+, and Ultra bump it up to a 6.8-inch curved OLED. The panels all support LTPO 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rates, 10-bit color depth (1.07 billion colors), HDR Vivid certification, and a peak local brightness of 3000 nits.

Second-generation Kunlun Glass is used across the range for added durability, and the entire series is IP68/IP69 rated for water and dust resistance. The Ultra takes it a step further with a unique “sun-pattern” rear finish and gold accents that subtly highlight its flagship positioning.

Big batteries for a long-lasting experience

If there is one practical area where Huawei clearly listened to user demand, it is battery life. The base Pura 80 comes with a 5600mAh battery that supports 66W wired and 50W wireless charging. This innovative module allows users to switch between two native optical zoom levels: 3.7x and 9.4x, both using a 1/1.28-inch sensor for superb image quality across the zoom range. Huawei claims the Ultra’s main 50MP sensor also delivers 16EV of dynamic range, the highest ever recorded in a smartphone camera, with up to 15x higher dynamic range than the Pura 70 Ultra.

Beyond the numbers, Huawei is adding more computational photography tools to its lineup this year. New shooting modes include Nature, Film, Movie, and Cartoon presets, along with a real-time video fusion feature that improves highlight retention and tone mapping in difficult lighting.

Satellite messaging: smarter, faster, and two-way

Huawei was one of the first brands to adopt satellite messaging on its consumer smartphones, and the Pura 80 series evolves this capability further. The Pura 80 and Pura 80 Pro support two-way Beidou satellite messaging, allowing not just text but also photo transmission.

The Pro+ goes a step further with dual satellite system support (Beidou + Tiantong), enabling more consistent satellite lock-on and improved reliability during emergencies. Users no longer need to manually align the phone for transmission, the system intelligently manages satellite selection and connectivity.

Software smarts and AI integration

All Pura 80 models run HarmonyOS 5.1 and include Huawei’s Xiaoyi AI assistant. Huawei is pushing more AI-driven features this year, such as AI anti-peeping alerts, AI-based file transfer (AI Teleportation), and AI noise reduction for calls.

While Huawei usually keeps hush about the chip details, we know that the Pura 80 series packs the Kirin 9020.

This processor is paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage. A sizeable 5,700mAh battery pack powers this device, which supports 100W wired fast charging and 80W wireless fast charging. Starting today, Huawei’s VMall store has begun accepting pre-reservations for the Pura 80 Pro and the Pura 80 Pro+. These are two of the four expected models in the lineup. As of this writing, the pair has already attracted over 34,000 combined reservations.

Pura 80 retains Huawei’s iconic camera design

The pre-reservation listing may also offer an early glimpse at one of the phones. A promotional image shows what appears to be the Pura 80 in a pleasing red finish. The camera module retains the iconic triangular design, complete with the company’s XMAGE imaging branding. 

The broader Pura 80 lineup is rumored to include four models: the base Pura 80, the Pro, the Pro+, and an Ultra version. According to reporting from MyDrivers, the vanilla Pura 80 and top-tier Ultra may not arrive alongside the others and could be saved for a later launch.

Details on the Pura 80 Pro+ have started to emerge through leaks. Tipster Digital Chat Station claims the device will feature a 50MP triple-camera setup with a large sensor, along with a multispectral sensor.  

The device also features a curved metal frame and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. The entire Pura 80 series will debut with HarmonyOS 5 out of the box, making it the first flat-flagship line-up to do so. Since its unveiling in March, HarmonyOS 5 has received iterative updates focused on improved security, fluidity, and ecosystem integration.

Powered by Kirin 9020 and HarmonyOS 5

The HiSilicon Kirin 9020 chip will power the Huawei Pura 80 series. Although it shares the 7nm SMIC manufacturing process with the Kirin 9010, the 9020 delivers key upgrades. Its CPU offers a faster main TaiShan V121 core at 2.5 GHz, incorporates different Taishan-Little efficiency cores, and the newer Maleoon 920 GPU is clocked higher at 840 MHz.

The Kirin 9020 also brings faster LPDDR5X memory, UFS 4.0 storage, and a significant leap in connectivity with the newer Balong 6000 modem, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 5.4. AI tasks continue to be handled by Huawei’s Da Vinci NPU architecture.

On the software front, the Pura 80 series will run the HarmonyOS 5. This latest version of Huawei’s operating system brings substantial advancements, with a core focus on deep AI integration throughout the user experience, leveraging technologies like Huawei’s Pangu large language model. 

HarmonyOS 5 delivers improved system fluency, refined UI aesthetics, more seamless cross-device collaboration, and a mature, independent app ecosystem, built upon the “HarmonyOS NEXT” architecture.

Self-developed Camera Sensor

The elliptical shapes have led to speculation that both may be periscope-style telephoto lenses — a design shift that aligns with earlier leaks hinting at a dual-periscope zoom system, possibly reserved for the Ultra model.

This wouldn’t be Huawei’s first venture into dual telephoto territory, as the P40 Pro+ introduced the concept years ago. However, a dual-periscope setup at this level could reaffirm Huawei’s commitment to cutting-edge imaging, not just for zoom, but for overall optical performance.

Now the tipster reiterates on that leak saying the main sensor also be a part of the experiment.

Why does it matter?

For those unfamiliar, RGGB (commonly used in smartphone sensors) and RYYB refer to different color filter array configurations used to capture color information. While RGGB is considered to be ideal for general photography, the RYYB configuration excels in low-light conditions, capturing brighter images but sometimes at the cost of color accuracy.

So, it may benefit the Pura 80 Ultra in low-light photography. As for the color accuracy, the smartphone giant has previously experimented with it and likely has some experience on how to navigate through the challenges that come with RYYB. Nonetheless, we’ll need to test the color accuracy ourselves once the device hits the market.

The tipster also stated that the entire series comes with variable aperture, and the amount of light that enters the main sensor is sufficient.

To recall, Huawei used the RYYB color filter array with the Pura 70 Ultra as well, and the phone competes well with other flagships regardless of the lighting condition.
