There’s a catch

As older iPhones get cheaper, you can buy them without a second thought, right? Well, things are slightly more complicated than that. Apple only lowers the official price tag for the lower end models. In other words, the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus may get an official price cut after the iPhone 16 series announcements. Meanwhile, the higher end Pro models like the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will likely be discontinued immediately. So you can’t simply get last year’s flagship for a more affordable price.

Worth the wait?

Despite all of this, it is still worth waiting for the iPhone 15 following the iPhone 16’s debut. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are expected to become more affordable, but there’s also a short window where retailers and third party sellers sell the iPhone 15 Pro models with heavy discounts. This doesn’t mean that they are as cheap as a mid-range phone, but easily more accessible than their launch price.

If you want the latest and greatest, it makes sense to go for Apple’s shiny new iPhone 16 models. Based on recent rumors, the iPhone 15 could outperform an M4 powered iPad Pro in AI performance. A leak even hinted at the Pro variants getting 5x tetraprism telephoto cameras as well as higher resolution ultra wide angle lenses. However, these upgrades aren’t expected to bring a huge upgrade, so the iPhone 15 could serve as a better value for money. The company isn’t well known for launching affordable mid range devices, but its flagship phones definitely become better deals after the newer generation is introduced.

Pro models in iPhone 15 series are getting even more popular, hints display shipment

Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) reports a notable increase in panel shipments for the iPhone 15 series. The data reveals a 16% growth in panel deliveries compared to the iPhone 14 series during the same period through October and 21% growth than the corresponding period for the iPhone 13 in 2021.

Pro iPhone models’ dominance in panel shipments

DSCC’s findings point to the growing popularity of the iPhone 15 Pro models, particularly in October. The Pro variants secured an impressive 71% share of the total panels shipped, which is a significant increase from the 65% share recorded in September.

Notably, the higher starting price of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, priced at $1,199 with 256GB of storage, compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro Max at $1,099 with 128GB of storage, has influenced the Average Selling Price (ASP). The ASP of the iPhone 15 series registers a 5% increase compared to the iPhone 14 series. This reflects a willingness among consumers to opt for higher-storage variants.

Samsung Display (SDC) continues to be a pivotal player in Apple‘s supply chain, contributing significantly to the iPhone 15 series panel shipments. Accounting for 81% of panels shipped from June to October, SDC remains a reliable and consistent supplier for Apple. This trend aligns with previous years where SDC played a key role in delivering panels for all four iPhone models in 2023, 2022, and 2021.

However, other panel suppliers have entered the scene lately. LG Display (LGD) started shipping displays for the iPhone 15 Pro Max in September, securing an 18% share for that model through October. Additionally, China’s BOE entered the supply chain last month, contributing with a 1% share for the iPhone 15 series.

Pro iPhones are getting increasingly popular among people

DSCC Senior Research Director, David Naranjo, highlights a trend where iPhone 15 Pro models are gaining increased popularity. Naranjo states, “Panel shipments for the iPhone 15 Pro models account for a higher share versus the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro models during the June – October period.” Cumulatively, the iPhone 15 Pro models hold a 64% share, surpassing the 54% share recorded for the iPhone 14 series and iPhone 13 series during the same period.

In summary, the latest data suggests an increased demand for the iPhone 15 series, driven by the popularity of its Pro models.

Apple introduced the iPhone 15 Series on the 12th of September 2023, at the Apple Event held in California. Obviously, the iPhone 15 Series was a big leap by the brand. However, back on the 15th of November, various local media sites reported that the Weibo hashtag “Apple Fails, Netizens Demand Refund” trended on the internet.

In the final two hours of the Double 11 promotion, the price of the iPhone 15 Series at Apple shops was reduced by an additional 200–300 yuan. Netizens who bought the device earlier during the sale felt that Apple had deceived them and sought a refund.

After a big controversy, the final statement says that since this is not a misleading promotion, price protection rules won’t really apply in this case. The iPhone 15 series is scheduled to be released in Korea on October 13th, but some experts are predicting that there may be shortages of certain models.

This is because there is a shortage of the iPhone 15 series in countries where it has already been released, such as China and Japan. In fact, in China, the expected shipment date for the iPhone 15 Pro Max has already been postponed to November due to a supply shortage.

Industry experts are predicting that the shortages are likely to affect the top models of the iPhone 15 series in Korea. They point to the fact that there was a shortage of top models, such as the Pro model, at the time of the iPhone 14 launch. The estimated shipment dates have slipped to as far as mid-November as per Apple’s website for the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Mark Gurman reports that the delivery times are increasingly getting delayed for the iPhone 15 Pro Max. It is delayed by up to 8 weeks in India, 6-7 weeks in China and Canada, and 7-8 weeks in the UK. The delayed orders are applicable for both home and in-store pickup deliveries. Apart from the Pro models, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are also getting delayed by up to 2 weeks in some markets.

Apple’s Pro iPhone variants are exclusively manufactured in China. Hence, it does not have any other avenue to ramp up production. This could also lead to a further delay if the demand for iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max continues to surge. Additionally, the latest offering’s titanium frame and A17 Pro based on a 3nm process is already challenging to manufacture. Apple is gearing up to launch the highly awaited iPhone 15 series soon. But prior to any official announcement, the company’s 2023 iPhone lineup might have surfaced on the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards), hinting at its imminent launch.

As per a recent BIS listing, a new Apple device was spotted on the certification platform carrying the model number A3094. Based on the timeline, the model in question is likely a part of the upcoming iPhone 15 series. The Cupertino based giant is expected to release its flagship smartphones sometime next month. Apart from the model number, the BIS listing does not reveal any other finer details regarding the new iPhone.

Although, there have already been various rumors and leaks regarding the new iPhones. While the Apple iPhone 14 series was launched just a couple of months ago, there have already been a number of leaks regarding its successor, the iPhone 15 lineup. These rumors have claimed that the upcoming iPhones will feature new design changes, however, a new report hints that this might not be the case.

Over the last couple of years, the iPhone models like the iPhone 14 series feature a flat rear panel with rounded edged but sharp corners. But, recent rumors had claimed that the new iPhone 15 will have a design that is more similar to the rounded edges of the older iPhone 5c. This would apparently offer a more comfortable experience when holding the device. Now, known tipster LeaksApplePro told Forbes that the Cupertino based giant is still unsure about bringing design changes with the iPhone 15.

Apparently, the curved edge design of the iPhone 15 is still not set in stone. Meaning, that the brand has still not finalized its final look. Interestingly enough, Apple had not locked in on the iPhone 14’s design till late March 2022. In other words, the company still has a couple of months for this decision. Another major detail regarding the upcoming 2023 iPhones is the use of titanium for its build on the side frames.

As per Kuo, Apple will introduce solid-state power and volume rocker buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. This means that the Cupertino-based tech giant will reportedly ditch the clickable switches. To make it simpler, the current-generation iPhones feature a physical/mechanical button design. The solid-state button design is similar to the home button design on the iPhone 7, 8, and even the SE 2 and SE 3.

The solid-state buttons make users feel like they are pressing physical buttons by offering haptic feedback to confirm presses. In reality, the buttons don’t actually sink in physically. The design change is only expected to be on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. For this, the smartphones will be equipped with Taptic Engines on the internal left and right sides This means that the next-generation Apple flagships could come with three taptic engines in addition to the existing vibration motor. Removing the physical power and volume buttons will also aid in removing two additional ingress points for water and dust, thereby creating a more durable phone.

Kuo adds that high-end Android OEMs are expected to adopt Apple’s solid-state button design to create a new selling point.

As per past reports, Apple has complied with the EU law that requires phone manufacturers to use USB-C ports. This potentially suggests that the iPhone 15 will ditch the lightning port in favour of a USB-C connection. Regardless, buttonless design and a USB-C port seem to be a major highlights for the next-generation iPhones.
