Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, popularly known as TSMC, is setting up a new production plan in Arizona, United States at a cost of around $12 billion.

The plant was originally planned to manufacture 5nm chips but recently it was revealed that the plant will be making 4nm chips. Now, a new report from Taiwanese media claims that the production of 4nm chips in the Arizona plant could start next year.

According to the report from Economic Daily, TSMC’s new plant in Arizona will start producing 4nm chips from 2024. The report further adds that Qualcomm’s Global Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Chen Ruowen said that Qualcomm will be the first customer of TSMC’s US plant’s 4nm chips.

It was earlier reported that AMD and NVIDIA were among the companies that urged TSMC to start making 4nm chips in the US. The development comes at a time when companies are now planning to source chips manufactured in the United States. Further, this new plant should also allow a whole host of new companies and jobs to appear in support of the manufacturing facility.

Apart from Qualcomm, Apple, AMD, and NVIDIA are also expected to place a large order for the chips manufactured by TSMC in the Arizona facility. In the second phase of the upgrade at the Arizona plant, TSMC will upgrade the facility to produce more advanced 3nm chips, which is likely to happen around 2026.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, aka TSMC, which is the world’s largest foundry, is all set to start the mass production of its 3nm chips this week.

Apple, which is among the top customers for the Taiwan-based company, will be the primary customer for the chips manufactured using this new process and will be a part of the tech giant’s M2 lineup.

As per the report, TSMC will start mass production of 3nm chips on 29th December, Thursday, which is in line with the previous reports, which indicated that the company could start mass production of the 3nm node process by the end of the year.

It is said that TSMC will hold a ceremony at Fab 18 at the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) on December 29 to mark the start of commercial production of chips using 3nm process technology. It will also detail plans to expand 3nm chip production at the fab, according to sources at semiconductor equipment companies.

For Apple, before the A17 Bionic chip for the upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Ultra models, the Cupertino-based company is expected to place orders for the 3nm M2 Pro chip, which will be powering the upcoming MacBook Pro and the Mini Mini. Both these chips, A17 Bionic and M2 Pro, are expected to ship later next year.

Samsung is also able to mass produce 3nm chips using Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistors, allowing more precise control of current flow through each transistor and improved power efficiency. TSMC will be using FinFET transistors for the 3nm node but will adopt GAA transistors for the 2nm chips, which is likely to happen in 2025.

As per the latest report, Apple has started trial production of the iPhone 14 series smartphones and is expecting the phones to sell more than its predecessors.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Render

The report claims that the trial production for the iPhone 14 lineup has started and the company is planning to start the mass production of the smartphones in August. It further adds that Apple has informed suppliers that the initial sales of the new iPhone 14 series will be higher than the iPhone 13 lineup launched last year.

The expectations for the sales from Apple are in line with what the market analysts are speculating. Many analysts believe that the next-gen Apple iPhone series could outperform the smartphone industry globally if major economies fall into recession.

Apple has been seeing good results in terms of sales despite the overall smartphone demand appearing to be cooling off. The company is still seeing good sales momentum for the iPhone 13 lineup, contrary to its track record of iPhone sales slowing down from the month of July in anticipation of the next-gen model.

It is also being said that the pricing of the Apple iPhone 14 series could be $100 more than its predecessor because of many factors, including the rising cost of raw materials, supply constraints, and other economic reasons. There’s a possibility that the Cupertino-based tech giant may not increase the pricing, so we will have to wait for a couple of months to know for sure about the iPhone 14 series pricing details.

Further, it is said that once the company starts taking pre-orders for the affordable Foxtron Model C SUV in the fourth quarter of this year, the product will go into mass production sometime in the first half of next year.

The car measures 4.64 meters in length and has a 112.6-inch-long wheelbase. The model will be available as a seven-seater with a 2+3+2 seating layout optionally, which will make it suitable for large families.

The company says that it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h or 0 to 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds. This acceleration time applies to its performance variant with 400 horsepower, 700 Nm (516 lb.-ft.) of torque, and AWD drivetrain layout.

For those who are unaware, Foxconn set up a joint venture with Taiwan-based automaker Yulon Group and the newly formed entity is called Honghua Advanced while the English name of the company is Foxtron.

The EV platform from the company, called MIH Open Platform, is an open-source solution for OEMs to develop new electric cars. The Taiwanese company is also making its own cars using the same platform and aims to become the Android of EVs for OEMs.

According to a PanDaily report, the known Chinese display maker is planning on expanding its flexible displays portfolio. The cutting edge production line will join other manufacturing sites in Chengdu and Mianyang. During the mass production ceremony, BOE President, Liu Xiaodong stated that “In the current information and digital age, new application markets such as smart mobile terminals, smart wearable devices, and smart connected cars are showing explosive growth trends. This is increasing the demand for high end display technologies such as flexible displays.”

As of right now, the company already has 6 key projects operating in Chongqing, with the latest 6th generation flexible AMOLED production line being one of them. It even has its 8.5 generation of TFT LCD panel line and the BOE Chongqing Smart System Innovation Center in the region as well. All of these facilities combined are estimated to include around 86 billion Yuan (roughly 13.5 billion US Dollars) in terms of investment.

Furthermore, the latest 6th gen flexible AMOLED production line covers a massive area of 970,000 square meters. This facility is also independently designed and developed by BOE, with the panels being produced set to target small and medium sized high end display markets. In other words, we can expect to see the new flexible panels in a number of new consumer electronic products sometime next year.

The model in question is the world’s first 3 gear hybrid electric drive DHT Pro that started rolling out from the DHT Pro Micron Factory at the end of last month.

As per the official announcement, the new hybrid model features the Raytheon Zhiqing Hi-X 3-gear hybrid electric drive DHT Pro and DHE15. This is a hybrid engine and is claimed to offer the highest thermal efficiency in the world. The model’s name is the Xingyue-L Raytheon Hi-X oil-electric hybrid version, which can go from 0 to 100km/h in just 7.9 seconds and has a maximum cruise range of a whopping 1,300 kilometers.

Furthermore, the average fuel consumption of this hybrid car is just 4.3 liters per an impressive 100 kilometers. This model is equipped with the DHE15 hybrid special engine that offers a thermal efficiency of 43.32 percent along with a maximum power output of 110kW and a maximum torque of 225 N/m. According to Geely, when the vehicle is running at a speed below 20km/h, the car will automatically switch to a pure electric driving mode to prevent the vehicle’s engines from running in inefficient areas.

In other words, it can also smartly help reduce fuel consumption. On the other hand, when the vehicle hits speeds between 20km/h and 70km/h, the third gear electric drive transmission DHT Pro kicks in with both electric and oil driving. It even offers intelligent energy distribution as well. Lastly, when the vehicle crosses speeds of more than 80km/h, the DHT Pro’s increase gear speed change and torque increases enable the car to generate torque of 4920 N/m rapidly.

Now, months ahead of the official launch, a new report claims that the South Korean giant has started mass production of some of the components for the upcoming flagship smartphones.

The report coming from WinFuture claims that Samsung has started mass production of components for the three upcoming flagship phones — Galaxy S22 (SM-S901), Galaxy S22 Plus (SM-S906), and the Galaxy S22 Ultra (SM-S908).

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Render

It further adds that the process, which started sometime last week, is currently limited to a small number of parts, such as flex cables. Also, the report says that the company is currently focusing on the US variant and will then work on other models.

As for the launch date, there’s no confirmation about it. Some reports indicate that the devices will go official towards the end of January 2022 while there are other reports indicating the launch sometime in February.

Earlier, there were reports about the Samsung Galaxy S22 lineup getting launched in January but apparently, the launch has been pushed back to February as the company is now gearing up to launch the much-delayed Galaxy S21 FE in January 2022. This could happen during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2022.

Coming to the specifications, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is rumored to sport a 6.8-inch QHD+ LTPO AMOLED display with a 120HZ refresh rate. The phone will come powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 SoC or the Exynos 2200 depending on the region.

Its rear-facing camera module may include a 108-megapixel main snapper, a 12-megapixel ultrawide shooter, a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, and a 10-megapixel periscope zoom lens with 10x optical zoom.

The smartphone is also said to feature a dedicated slot for storing the S Pen stylus. In the software devices, all the models in the lineup will come with Android 12-based One UI 4.0 out-of-the-box. The S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra are likely to house a 3,700mAh, a 4,500mAh, and a 5,000mAh battery, respectively. The Ultra model will support 45W fast charging, whereas the S22 and S22 Plus may continue to support 25W fast charging.

Now, a new report has revealed that the company has began the mass production for its two upcoming foldable smartphones.

According to a FrontPageTech report, the South Korean tech giant has began mass production of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z flip 3, with its orders reaching a whopping 50,000 and 70,000 units a day for each device. These orders are quite a bit higher than the previous models of these foldable devices. The report added that the company is apparently planning on having 7 million units being produced for both smartphones combined.

Since the production figures are this high, the smartphone maker is starting up the mass production of the two devices slightly earlier this year. For those unaware, Samsung only produced a combined 1 to 2 million units of the previous two foldable smartphone models. Reportedly, the company is raising the production numbers due to the successful performance of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 that was launched back in 2020.

In other words, the company is clearly confident about its upcoming high end models. We will be covering the launch event of these devices and cover any rumors or reports that surface prior to its launch. So stay tuned.

The company’s M2 processor is likely to arrive with various improvements in terms of performance and optimizations. Unfortunately, it is still too early to offer any concrete statements. Thus, we will have to wait for more leaks or an official company announcement to know for sure, so stay tuned for more as we will be providing updates when additional informational is available regarding the matter.

The company has been putting in efforts to boost its chipset production and has now started mass-producing 5nm chipset.

In a recent announcement regarding the company’s Q2 2020 performance, the South Korean giant confirmed that it has begun mass-production of 5nm chipsets. Further, the company revealed that it is also working on 4nm chipsets.

The development is in line with the company’s earlier announcement of starting mass production of 5nm chipset by the end of Q2 2020. The company reveals that it has also strengthened the foundation for expansion by starting investments in production lines in the Pyeongtaek complex.

For those who are unaware, the Pyeongtaek complex in South Korea is the new chipset production facility from Samsung which will be focusing on making 5nm chips. The company has planned to invest around KRW 10 trillion ($8.1 billion) in this facility.

The new facility is responsible for making AI-powered (artificial intelligence), high-end smartphones, and HPC (high-performing computing) chips. Samsung’s plan is to diversify applications into HPC and consumer products to improve profitability.

EDITOR’S PICK: Samsung announces plans for 6G technology; launch expected by the end of this decade

On the other hand, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has already started manufacturing 5nm chipsets for Apple. The chipset, Apple A14, will be powering the company’s upcoming iPhone 12 lineup.

The company will reportedly use Exynos 1000 SoC for the upcoming Galaxy S-series flagship smartphones, which will be manufactured using the 5nm process. Not only that, but Samsung has also reportedly bagged orders for mass production of Qualcomm Snapdragon 875G and Snapdragon 735G chipsets on 5nm node.

Samsung is among the very few smartphone companies to build its own chipsets. The South Korean giant has ambitious plans for the future and aims to become the leading semiconductor company in the world by 2030.

LG Velvet Mass Production

The South Korean tech giant is apparently aiming at shipping 300,000 units for the US market. This would make the device the flagship handset for the second half of this year. Traditionally, the year started off with a G series LG flagship followed by a V series in the second half, but this has since shifted to the launch of Velvet. The production of the new device will begin in August 2020.

Notably, LG will be adding a millimeter (mm) wave antenna made by Qualcomm, which wasn’t included in the South Korean variant. This also caused certain design changes, with the US version of the Velvet having a thinner frame on the sides to support better signal transfer in mmWave networking. At the moment, the US is the only country that has a commercialized mmWave spectrum, thus, the device will take advantage of it.

Velvet UI Update

LG is also planning on updating its older generation of flagship models to the new Velvet UI. The company has been criticized in the past for neglecting older launches, but it seems that LG is mending its ways. It seems that the smartphone maker is dropping the UX naming in favor of the Velvet UI. The devices set to receive the update includes the V50 ThinQ, V50S ThinQ, V40 ThinQ, V35 ThinQ, G8 ThinQ, and G7 ThinQ.

These new chips were labeled as HBM2E, which are now finally ready for mass production.

According to official claims, the HBM2E has a performance of 3686.4Gbps per pin. This translates to a bandwidth of more than 460GB/s, with a total of 1024 I/O (input/output). The HBM2E architecture stacks eight 16 gigabit DRAM chips with TSV (Through Silicon Via) technology to achieve a total capacity of 16GB, which is more than twice the capacity of previous generation HBM2 memory.

Despite having various advantages, its high cost and other limiting factors led to its eventual discontinuation in later generations. Although now, SK Hynix has launched the latest generation of memory solution that arrives with AI systems with deep learning accelerators that would be useful for high performance computers.

Methods to achieve this include punch hole camera, popup mechanism, or even a water drop notch. But recently, the anticipation for an Under Display camera has been growing, and now, Visionox has confirmed that its OLED panel with this technology is ready for mass production.

The company has said that its the under screen camera solution is ready and it has achieved one of the best display results. Visionox has used transparent OLED panel on devices, which has resulted in a balanced offering of display quality and photographic performance. This will allow smartphone OEMs to make full front display bodies on their offerings and is also the world’s first under-screen camera solution to reach mass production.

Despite smartphone vendors having showcased the under screen camera technology, a smartphone with this feature has yet to launch. Oppo had previously mentioned that the technology would likely not be seen in 2020 since image quality suffered. Furthermore, it would also likely be expensive, and shipping a high end flagship with a sub par front camera is infeasible.

The event saw the appearance of the Chinese company’s research and development team for smartphones (the ones behind the surround screen technology in the Mi Mix Alpha), who won Xiaomi’s Annual Technology Award for 2019. And in an interview, Cui Baoqiu, chairman of Xiaomi’s technical committee and Han Haicai, the architect behind the surround sound screen research and development team brought up the topic regarding the production of Mi Mix Alpha.

According to the senior officials, the smartphone has not been mass produced yet, with no plans of doing so being on the table. However, they stated that Xiaomi is currently at the capacity where it can start the mass production of the handset.

It has further been revealed that the Mi Mix Alpha was developed after Lei Jun (Co-Founder and CEO) decided on the need for a unique and innovative smartphone. Additionally, the device was also made to break the repetitive cycle of similar types of smartphones that are currently in circulation.

Xiaomi had initially announced the Mi Mix Alpha back on 24th September 2019, which has garnered a lot of attention ever since. One of its unique selling points was definitely its unique surround screen technology, that had the display cover a vast majority of the smartphone’s body. From what we know so far, it is a concept handset that will likely not see mass production like Xiaomi’s other flagships and would only be released in limited numbers.

Although the interview confirmed that the company can technically start mass production, Xiaomi needs to first coordinate with the local Chinese Government and other smartphone-related departments before selling the product on a large scale. As of right now, the Mi Mix Alpha stands as a testimony to Xiaomi’s innovative creations and technological developments, according to Cui Baoqiu.

The phone is rumored to have an in-display front-facing camera and ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, among others.

Now a new report suggests that the South Korean company has already started mass production of the Galaxy S10-series smartphones. The report about the Galaxy S10 production comes from a German-based publication’s Twitter handle, which is known for its accurate leaks.

This is quite early given that the production of the Galaxy S-series smartphones usually begins in January. The reason behind starting the phone’s production a month earlier could be the phone’s new form factor as well as the new features that the company is reportedly going to offer, including ToF sensors and in-display fingerprint sensor, and others.

For the initiated, Samsung will be launching three models in the upcoming Galaxy S-series — Galaxy S10, S10 Plus, and S10 Lite as well as a fourth variant with ceramic body and 5G connectivity support. The Samsung ‘Unpacked’ launch will reportedly take place on 20th February in Barcelona, a week before the commencement of MWC 2019.

As per the rumors, the S10 Lite, S10 and S10 Plus will come with 5.8-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.4-inch S-AMOLED display respectively, with a higher screen-t0-body ratio. The S10 Lite will have dual rear cameras while the other models will be equipped with triple camera sensors on the back.

The S10 and S10 Plus, on the other hand, are expected to come equipped with an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor. Depending on the market, the Galaxy S10 series will be powered by the Snapdragon 855 or Exynos 9820. The phones will be running Android Pie-based Samsung One UI on top.
