Features of Samsung MicroLED TVs:

The transparency of these MicroLED TVs is achieved through precision manufacturing processes that print Micro LED chips on a piece of glass, eliminating seams and refractions and giving the panel a glass-like appearance.

In terms of design, the TVs are incredibly thin, measuring about a centimeter in thickness, which enhances the illusion of a floating screen. Moreover, the high pixel density of micro LEDs ensures that the images displayed are exceptionally sharp and clear.

If you are not sure what MicroLED is, it’s a display technology that uses millions of tiny LEDs to create an image. Each LED is self-illuminating, which means that it doesn’t need a backlight like traditional LCD or OLED displays. This results in superior picture quality, with deeper blacks, brighter whites, and wider viewing angles.

Samsung’s Micro LED panels are not only transparent but also modular. This design allows users to combine multiple modules to create TVs of any desired aspect ratio, shape, or size. This flexibility is perfect for applications like giant scoreboards in homes and stadiums, as well as innovative advertisements in commercial use cases.

One of the key advantages of Samsung’s transparent MicroLED displays over transparent OLED panels is their higher brightness, making them less affected by ambient light. This feature is crucial in maintaining the clarity and visibility of the content displayed on the screen, regardless of the surrounding lighting conditions.

However, it’s important to note that, as of now, Samsung’s non-transparent MicroLED TVs are priced at $150,000 for a 110-inch model. This suggests that the new transparent Micro LED displays might also come with a hefty price tag, at least initially, making them a premium product that may not be immediately affordable for the average consumer.

Alongside the MicroLED TVs, Samsung has also unveiled their latest AI-based 4K and 8K 2024 Neo QLED TVs, S95D OLED TVs, and also updated Tizen OS.

The Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), a research firm specializing in display industry analysis, has released a comprehensive forecast report on the MicroLED market, projecting significant growth and market shifts by 2028. This report outlines the emerging trends and challenges in the MicroLED display sector, highlighting its potential impact on various industries.

Emerging Dominance of MicroLED in Wearables

MicroLED technology is set to revolutionize the display market with its superior attributes compared to conventional LED displays. Known for its energy efficiency, microLED displays significantly reduce the risk of burn-in and promise a longer lifespan. These displays are distinguished by their individual pixel light sources, which enable superior contrast, faster response times, and more vibrant colors. This makes microLED technology particularly suitable for devices where high-quality display performance is essential.

One of the key predictions in DSCC’s report is the expansion of the MicroLED market to $1.46 billion by 2028. This growth is expected to be driven primarily by its adoption in wearable devices like smartwatches, AR glasses, and automotive displays. Wearables, in particular, are poised to benefit from the high brightness and efficiency of microLED displays. The smaller display sizes and lower pixel counts in these devices help mitigate the initial challenges of low production yields that have been a concern for larger displays.

Despite its potential, the MicroLED market faces some hurdles. The slow penetration of AR/VR applications and the risk of delays in anticipated products like Apple’s MicroLED smartwatch have led DSCC to adjust its forecasts slightly. The first MicroLED smartwatch, targeting the high-end market, is expected to launch next year, but the manufacturer remains undisclosed.

Apple is a key player in this evolving market. The company is expected to launch its first Apple Watch (Ultra model) with a microLED screen in the fall of 2025, with mass production beginning in early 2026. Additionally, there are plans to upgrade Apple’s Vision Pro headset from micro-OLED to microLED technology. Samsung also plans to use Micro LED displays in its smartwatches, potentially starting with the “Galaxy Watch Ultra,” aiming to replace OLED technology within a year.

There’s another good news for Apple as DSCC reports that the iPhone 15 series has seen a significant increase in panel shipments, with a 16% growth compared to the iPhone 14 series and 21% compared to the iPhone 13 series. The iPhone 15 Pro models, especially in October, have become increasingly popular, securing a 71% share of total panel shipments. The higher starting price of the iPhone 15 Pro Max and consumer preference for higher-storage variants have driven a 5% increase in the Average Selling Price (ASP) for the iPhone 15 series. Samsung Display remains a major supplier, but LG Display and BOE have also entered the supply chain, contributing to the series’ growing demand.

Merck Group, a prominent supplier to industry giants Samsung and LG, has made a significant strategic decision regarding its focus on display materials. The company has decided to discontinue the development of LCD panels and instead redirect its research efforts towards exploring innovative materials such as MicroLED and OLED.

Understanding Merck Group’s Decision to Discontinue LCD Development

The shift in Merck Group’s priorities comes in response to the recent announcements made by Samsung and LG, two major players in the display industry, regarding their exit from LCD screen production. As Korean companies, both Samsung and LG have established their dominance in the OLED panel market. Samsung excels in the production of small and medium-sized OLED panels for smartphones and tablets, while LG leads in large-sized OLED panels for OLED TVs.

Given this market landscape, it is not surprising that Merck Group has chosen to align its research and development investments with the emerging trends in the display industry. By ceasing the development of LCD panel materials, the company can now concentrate its resources on self-emitting screen materials like MicroLED and OLED, as well as explore advancements in backlight technologies, including Mini-LED.

Merck Group’s decision reflects the industry’s collective recognition of the growing demand and potential for next-generation display technologies. With OLED displays gaining popularity in various consumer electronics, the suppliers collaborating with Samsung and LG are actively prioritizing the research and development of OLED and other advanced screen materials.

In related news, Chinese display manufacturers, including BOE, CSOT, Tianma, and Visionox, have teamed up to challenge a patent owned by Samsung Display in the United States. This move is in response to Samsung’s previous attempts to block imports of third-party displays that it believes infringe on its patented technologies.

Apple is an independent company that designs almost all the parts used in its devices. This gives them a distinct advantage over their competitors. Apple does not manufacture its own parts, but instead collaborates with specialist firms such as TSMC. These manufacturers are eager to work with Apple, and in return, Apple gains control over the supply chain.

However, Apple is not as independent when it comes to displays. The company collaborate with giants such as Samsung and LG Display in this area. In an effort to gain greater control over its display supply and reduce its dependency on partners like Samsung, Apple is reportedly making substantial investments in microLED technology. Here are the details..

Apple Invests $1 Billion in MicroLED Technology to Revolutionize Displays

As you know, MicroLED is a relatively new display technology that has the potential to be better than both LCD and OLED displays. It is self-emissive, meaning it does not require a backlight, which results in deeper blacks, higher contrast ratios, and better power efficiency. MicroLED displays are also very durable and can be made in a wide range of sizes.

Aware of the situation, Apple is working on developing microLED displays for its products, and invested more than $1 billion in research and development. The company is said to be building its own microLED manufacturing facilities, which could help it to bring microLED displays to market more quickly and at a lower cost. However, Apple is facing challenges in mass-producing, but it is committed to bringing the technology to market.

It is still too early to say when Apple will launch its first microLED product, but the company is clearly committed to the technology. If microLED displays can live up to their potential, they could revolutionize the display industry and help Apple to maintain its position as a leader in the mobile market.

Apple is working on making its own displays, which could mean that Samsung and LG will no longer be able to make money from every Apple product sold. In 2021, Samsung earned $10.3 billion from Apple, while LG earned $3.6 billion. If Apple is successful in making its own displays, these two companies could lose a significant amount of revenue.

“Designed in California, Assembled in China.” This phrase is likely a familiar one to many of you, as it is often found on Apple products. Despite putting in significant effort to develop its products and not being fond of relying on outside companies, Apple does not have its own production facilities. For instance, it must collaborate with manufacturers such as TSMC. One of these collaborations appears on display technologies. Apple is reportedly planning to develop its own custom MicroLED displays for its devices, with the aim of having greater control over product design. Here are the details…

As Apple Embraces MicroLED Tech, Samsung and LG Retain Their Roles

Apple has long been collaborating with manufacturers like Samsung Display and LG for the screens used in their devices. According to recent reports, this collaboration is expected to strengthen even further. The company is reportedly planning to develop its own custom MicroLED displays for devices, aiming for greater control over product design. The tech giant is said to be transitioning its devices from OLED to MicroLED displays, starting with the Apple Watch in 2024 or 2025, followed by iPhones, iPads, and eventually MacBooks. So what is the difference between these two display technologies?

OLED and MicroLED are two types of screens. OLED screens use special materials that light up when electricity is used, making them thin and flexible. They show deep blacks and have fast response times. MicroLED screens use tiny LEDs that light up one by one. They also have deep blacks but can be brighter and last longer than OLEDs. However, MicroLEDs are newer and more expensive to make.

MicroLED display production remains challenging, and manufacturing costs are higher. As a result, Apple will likely continue to source components from Korean manufacturers to save on mass production costs. However, it’s worth noting that the tech giant doesn’t rush when it comes to change. For example, even though the first iPhone with an OLED screen was released in 2015, we continued to see IPS technology until the iPhone 12 series. And even today, MacBook models still haven’t completed this transition.

AUO, a leading provider of display technologies, has made significant strides in the development of next-generation displays. During a recent announcement, AUO Chairman Peng Shuanglang revealed that the company will begin mass production of MicroLED displays this year, with plans to integrate them into wearable devices. Mini LED backlights, which are already standard in high-end TVs and widely used in gaming and car panels, have also seen a surge in popularity.

According to Shuanglang, AUO’s LED display has already surpassed 100 million yuan in sales, with an expected growth rate of several times that figure in the years to come. In addition to AUO’s own research and development efforts, the company has formed strategic partnerships with ecosystem partners to expand its capabilities. For example, during this year’s CES, AUO showcased the Mini LED backlight technology in a smart cockpit display, which received an overwhelmingly positive response.

One of the key challenges in the production of MicroLED displays is ensuring consistent output across millions of individual LEDs. Even at high yields, some defective LEDs may be present. To combat this, chip makers will need to identify defective LEDs and adapt the transfer process. Shuanglang noted that AUO has its own ecological chain for the key mass transfer technology of MicroLED, making it possible to produce commercially viable products.

In addition to wearables, AUO plans to integrate MicroLED technology into TVs and cars in the future. Shuanglang emphasized that the demand for smart windshields in cars is particularly strong, especially given the trend towards automation and intelligence. Chen Jianbin, Senior Vice President of AUO’s Display Strategic Business Group, noted that more than half of the automotive displays that AUO is currently working on are barebone (partially assembled) orders, which is expected to significantly boost future operations.

Looking ahead, Jianbin estimates that AUO’s two technology platforms, AmLED and FIDM, are expected to contribute more than 50% of the growth space for automotive revenue in the next 2-3 years. As the company prepares for MicroLED mass production, AUO will continue to focus on high-end production capacity and make strategic capital expenditures to meet short medium, and long-term development needs.

AUO has also showcased MicroLED transparent displays, which can be applied to car windshields or side windows. The displays have high brightness and high penetration, making them an attractive option for self-driving car windows in the future. With its innovative display technologies and strategic partnerships, AUO is poised to remain a leader in the industry for years to come.

The watch has a host of features that sets it apart from its competition, such as 100m water resistance and up to 60 hours of battery life. The watch also boasts an OLED display. Speaking of displays, Apple screens have always been a topic of discussion among fans and critics alike. While the iPhone finally got an OLED display in 2017, many iPad models still sport LED screens. As per the latest reports, the tech giant will delay the adoption of microLED technology for the Apple Watch Ultra.

As reported by MacRumors, based on a tweet by display industry expert Ross Young, the transition to microLED will now be postponed until 2025. This news contradicts earlier reports that the microLED Apple Watch Ultra would hit the market in 2024. It must be noted that developing a microLED display technology is a bit more complex since these displays are not as common or mass-producible as OLED and LCDs.

The switch to microLED technology brings several benefits to the table, including improved power efficiency and durability, which are crucial selling points for the premium Apple Watch Ultra. There were also rumors of a slightly larger microLED panel, which could attract more athletes and outdoor enthusiasts, the target audience for the wearable.

However, the Apple Watch Ultra seems to have been put on hold due to Apple’s focus on its upcoming VR/AR headset, the Reality Pro. Apple is pitching a lot of hope on its headset, and its other devices might face some whiplash from that. Recently, the company collaborated with Disney to develop Virtual content. Like the iPad (which will receive new upgrades in 2024), the Apple Watch lineup is also facing delays due to upgrades being pushed back. Nevertheless, the Apple Watch Ultra still remains a formidable device, even with its current specifications.

With Apple unveiling its proprietary silicon for its various products, it was clear that it aims to rely on its self designed technologies. Now, it appears that the display is the next such goal of the company.

The Cupertino based giant already employs its tight ecosystem of software that seamless work with its PC, smartphones, and other products. So, it isn’t surprising that it is extending its proprietary reach to the hardware level as well. A new report has revealed that the iPhone maker is working on its own custom design for displays that are based on microLED technology, and it appears that a future Apple Watch model will be the first to debut this display.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the device with such a screen could be launched as early as next year, with its development process and planning being in the works for almost 5 years now. For those unaware, Apple typically orders its screens from major display manufacturers like Samsung, LG, and BOE. But for its custom microLED designs, it might employ a separate manufacturer to produce the displays.

Similarly, the company is also working on its own proprietary modems to replace the 5G modems it orders from Qualcomm for its iPhones. Although, developing its very own microLED display technology is a bit more complex. This breed of display are not as common in use as OLED or LCDs. Furthermore, these are usually used in large sizes in commercial spaces rather than mass production due to their cost of production. So, Apple might just start small with the Watch debuting this technology sometime by 2024 or 2025.

According to the Chinese tech giant’s spokesperson, the brand has no plans on selling these smart glasses as of right now. Although, it did reveal a lot of information and shared videos that hints at what a possible smart eyewear from the company could offer in the future. The smart glasses sports a relatively conventional design but arrives with a monochrome MicroLED display alongside AR features. The brand opted for this display technology due to its “higher pixel density and longer lifespan while having a simpler structure” when compared to OLED.

Furthermore, Xiaomi added that MicroLED displays also “allows for a more compact display, as well as easier screen integration.” While the new display technology has been touted to be a possible successor to OLEDs, it is quite expensive and have only been seen in just a few commercial products. As per official notes, the display has a size of “grain of rice” with its dimensions being 2.4mm x 2.02mm, with a peak brightness of 2 million nits. This high brightness won’t completely reach the user’s eye and is offered to make the information being displayed visible even in direct sunlight.

As per video teasers from the company, we can see various scenarios where the new smart glasses concept would come in handy. This includes live translation, real time navigation, notifications right on the display, and other useful functions as well. Notably, the smart glasses can function without a smartphone and is independent as it is an Android device itself. It sports an unknown quad core Arm processor, with support for WiFi, Bluetooth, houses a battery, and a 5 megapixel camera while just weighing 51 grams.

According to a DigiTimes report, the South Korean tech giant will employ a two pronged strategy to grow sales of its QLED and microLED TVs in 2021. For those unaware, Samsung QLED TVs arrive with integrate quantum dots (QD) and OLED technologies but the company aims at improving its performance in areas like power consumption and brightness. Furthermore, it aims on addressing the known screen burn in issues as well and plans to develop QNED technology within this year as well.

Editor’s Pick: OnePlus Band for Rs 2,499 (~$34) launched with AMOLED display, 14 day battery life, fitness tracking sensors, and more

Notably, Samsung is also planning on launching its 110 inch microLED TVs globally in the first quarter of this year. This might also launch along with rollable microLED technology if the company aims at pushing related technology together. Interestingly, both Samsung and LG are expected to contract the manufacture of their QLED and rollable OLED TVs, respectively, to third party companies for cost control reasons, with the former expected to raise the outsourcing ratio to 20 percent in 2021.

Additionally, Samsung and LG are also slowly withdrawing their TV assembly business from China and shifting to Vietnam and Indonesia due to the rise of local TV brands in the region. This move would also have both companies try and expand their sales in the Southeast Asian market as a whole.

The Neo QLED is designed for upcoming 8K and 4K TVs from the brand. The 88-inch, 99-inch, and 110-inch MicroLED panels are designed for TVs that will be aimed towards general consumers.

The Neo QLED panel is based on mini-LED backlighting technology that features smaller LEDs that can focus light on a smaller area. The panel is equipped with up to 40 times smaller LEDs than conventional LEDs with full-array back-lighting. Adding more LEDs in a smaller area makes it possible for the display panel to offer precise backlighting control, improved HDR, higher contrast, and better brightness.

The report says that Electronics and Optoelectronic System Research Laboratories(EOSRL) has made the micro-LED displays of these AR Smart Glasses. Also, this is reportedly happening under the government-sponsorship of the Industrial Technology Research Institute(ITRI), Taiwan.

As per the report, Foxconn invested in US-based eLux displays in May 2017. And it has been developing the microLED since then. Previously, the company’s efforts to get future Apple’s iPhone orders involved investments in micro-LED technology. While the latter currently adopts OLED displays, it’s craving for micro-LED hasn’t died as well.

Coming back, Foxconn has reportedly struck a three-year deal for obtaining a license from EOSRL and use its micro-LED technology. For the unware, micro-LED displays have inorganic Gallium Nitride(GaN) which gives more life expectancy than OLED panels. Further, it has advantages like improved complexity proportion, quick reaction time, less luminance decay, genuine blacks, and more.

That said, EOSRL’s micro-LED is 5 micron in size and the report says the lab will match quantum-dot(QD) technology to make panchromatic displays having PPI greater than 2000. Also, EOSRL is reportedly working on changing the optical architecture to improve display effect, eye-tracking sensors, ICs etc. However, the displays will be available only by Q1 2021 as per the report.

Besides, Foxconn is hoping to complete the development of AR Glasses by 2022 and try them in smart retail, smart factories, and smart medical care sectors. While the reason for the delay could be a number of factors, the report says that using micro-LED in AR Glasses involves complex processes and will take three years to complete.

Apart from iPhones, Foxconn recently started the trial production of Apple’s AR Glasses as well. It is believed to have developed semi-transparent lenses for the AR Glass. However, we aren’t sure about the exact specifications of these Glasses and it is best to wait for future updates as we advance ahead.

As per the reports, Apple could start adopting this new display technology sometime later this year.

Now, the tech giant has been granted a new patent for Micro-LED display (via Patently Apple) which the company is planning to use for future MacBook, iPads, and a Fitness Band. Earlier this year, Apple was granted a patent for Fitness Band but there’s no confirmation if the company is actually planning to enter that segment.

It seems that the company will first adopt the Mini-LED display and will gradually move towards using Micro-LED display panels on its products. Currently, it is facing some issues and thus, its adoption in the near future seems unlikely.

Recently, it was reported that Apple could be using the MicroLED Display panel for the seventh-generation Apple Watch. Cupertino-based Apple is reportedly investing around $330 million in a Taiwan-based company for Micro LED factory that will manufacture displays for future iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, and other devices.

EDITOR’S PICK: TSMC reportedly books its entire 5nm chip production capacity for Apple A14 Chipset

Manufacturers are trying to now adopt Micro LED screens instead of LCD or OLED panels as the new technology promises to be more energy-efficient and the panel is also thinner. It is said that the power consumption of the Micro LED screen is one-tenth compared to LCD.

Micro LED also supports a higher brightness, higher dynamic range, and wider color gamut. It also offers a faster update rate and a wider viewing angle. Given that the technology is still in the development phase, we could see devices with Mini LED display first, which falls between traditional LED and Micro LED technology.

The LG Magnit is the company’s first TV with a microLED display that is promised to offer “groundbreaking picture quality and durability.” It will be available in markets like the US, Europe, and a few others soon. For those unaware, microLED is a new breed of displays, which are similar to the OLED panels found in many TVs and smartphones but work with pixels that are a lot smaller. These pixels can be up to 100 times smaller, which should offer clearer images, better color reproduction, and better visibility from different angles.

Editor’s Pick: Xiaomi Mi 10 Guofeng Ya Gray model is the exclusive smartphone partner for “Mulan” in China

The South Korean tech giant also highlighted the “Black Coating” that it has applied on its microLEDs. This apparently will help in protecting the panel from damages and dust, while also helping in reducing reflections on the screen. The Magnit is run by the LG webOS, which also supports the Alpha AI imaging processor that will help optimize the images being displayed.

Notably, LG isn’t exactly targetting the broad consumer market with Magnit. Due to its enormous size, it will likely be used in more commercial sectors like hotels or other large corporate lobbies and more. Furthermore, microLED panels are also expensive, however, with the technology being available in the market, we can expect a shift to the newer generation of displays taking place within the arriving next few years. In other words, there will be a day where TVs with microLEDs will become a lot more common and affordable.

When charging premium pricing, the company has to offer premium features, and keeping that in mind, Apple is planning to adopt the new MicroLED display panels for the smartwatch.

According to a new report from DigiTimes, Apple could be using the MicroLED Display panel for the seventh-generation Apple Watch. However, the upcoming Apple Watch, the sixth-generation model, will continue to have an OLED panel.

It is being reported that Apple is investing around $330 million in Taiwan-based company for MicroLED factory that will manufacture displays for future iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, and other devices from Apple.

As per the report, Taiwan-based LCD panel maker AU Optronics is the supplier for the glass substrates for MicroLEDs sized 20-50 microns. On the other hand, Epistar is focusing on improving yield rates and reducing costs for mass transfer.

EDITOR’S PICK: Apple removing WeChat from App Store may have iPhone shipments fall by 30% in China: Kuo

Manufacturers are trying to now adopt MicroLED screens instead of LCD or OLED panels as the new technology promises to be more energy-efficient and the panel is also thinner. It is said that the power consumption of the MicroLED screen is one-tenth compared to LCD.

Further, MicroLED also supports a higher brightness, higher dynamic range, and wider color gamut. It also offers a faster update rate and a wider viewing angle. Given that the technology is still in the development phase, we could see devices with Mini-LED display first, which falls between traditional LED and MicroLED technology.

As previously reported, Apple is soon going to launch six products with Mini-LED display, including a 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro, a 27-inch iMac Pro, a 14.1-inch MacBook Pro, a 16-inch ‌‌‌‌MacBook Pro‌‌‌‌, a 10.2.-inch iPad, and a 7.9-inch ‌‌‌‌iPad‌‌‌‌ mini.

The company had also showcased two commercial sizes — 150-inch and 292-inch.

However, it seems that the MicroLED TVs from Samsung may not be available for purchase this year. As per the reports, Samsung had planned to complete the production process of necessary components in the first half of this year and then commercially launch the TVs in the second half of the year. But it is now being reported that the company has not yet started production of components.

The company seems to be facing issues with the transfer process as well as pricing. Micrometer-sized LED modules need to be transferred from their temporary substrate to the flexible circuit board.

While Samsung claims that its MicroLED uses micrometer-sized LED, it is not smaller than 100 micrometers which are required for the designation. Instead, they are between 100 micrometers and 200 micrometers in size, which is technically a MiniLED. But they also require a similar transfer process.

EDITOR’S PICK: Huawei could announce HarmonyOS 2.0 for wearables, PCs, and cars in September

Also, the yield rate for Samsung‘s MicroLED is quite low, which is impacting the pricing for the product. The current costing for the company is quite high — ranging between ten thousand dollars to up to a hundred thousand dollars, claims the report.

Even though the MicroLED TVs from Samsung are more advanced in terms of technology compared to the company’s QLED premium TVs, the pricing still remains an important factor to make the Samsung MicroLED TVs commercially viable.

MicroLED sets are similar to OLEDs in terms of self-emissive properties. However, instead of using organic light-emitting diodes, they use tiny, non-organic LEDs – three per pixel. That means that each pixel can be turned on or off individually, or can display a completely different color to the one next to it — offering almost perfect contrast and color control.

Component suppliers are reportedly waiting for Samsung’s final decision regarding the production size of microLED panels, which may come shortly after CES 2020.

For those who aren’t sure what this is about, microLED is a new kind of screen technology which Samsung initially showed off nearly a couple of decades back at CES 2018 as it introduced”The Wall”. The most important benefit of a microLED screen is that every individual pixel consists of genuine light-emitting diodes. Other benefits are much better viewing angles, brighter screens, and greater contrast.

Some industry watchers are positive that Samsung will push microLED into mass production next year, as the company has reportedly improved its expertise on this emerging display technology to the point where it would be possible to mass-produce plenty of microLED panels to meet the relatively high demand.

CES 2020 is right around the corner and we are eager to hear about the upcoming technological progress in display production. MicroLED appears to be the upcoming big thing following OLED, but it remains to be observed when we will see these displays on bulk consumer products such as TVs and eventually tablets, as well as whether Samsung will be the champion for these products or not.

Chinese tech blog IThomes quotes DigiTimes to have reported that BOE has started mass production of MicroLED panels in Kunming, Yunnan Province of China. The report states that mass production started in October this year and the company is looking for partners in MicroLED applications.

EDITOR’S PICK: Elephone 11.11 deals are up and running, Elephone PX shows up in another beautiful color

BOE had in May of this year demonstrated its innovative technology and solutions such as the 0.39-inch Micro-OLED AR with the highest 5644 PPI in the world at SID Display Week 2019. The microLED display was originally developed for use in telescopes, but BOE is now using it for AR/VR glasses, first-person view angle (FPV) goggles and projectors for drones.

MicroLED uses self-emission backlight just like OLED panels, unlike the traditional LCD displays which require LED backlight modules to emit light through layers from behind to generate images.

Micro LED can achieve effects such as very high contrast, extremely deep blacks, and fast response time just like OLED. However, Micro LED has higher brightness and is more stable than OLED because of its inorganic nature. In other words, red, green, and blue Micro LED pixels do not have luminance decay issues. Compared with that, each OLED pixel more or less suffers from luminance decay and the speed of decay varies. Despite these superior features, it may take a long time before microLED gains prominence over OLED. Samsung had deployed the technology on its The Wall TV but there have not been so many applications after that.

Unfortunately for most, MicroLED displays don’t seem to have taken off yet. While the company is conservative about the business outlook for the display industry amid volatile market conditions, the company expects its performance to improve in the second half of 2019, buoyed by peak-season effect. This essentially means we can expect more MicroLED devices pretty soon.

For those who aren’t in the new, MicroLED displays are the upcoming competitor to the current OLED displays. MicroLED displays are more slender, more brilliant, and more vitality proficient than OLED panels. MicroLED displays likewise have inorganic gallium nitride-based LEDs, which have a more drawn out life expectancy than the natural compound utilized in OLED panels and should make them increasingly impervious to burn-in issues.

MicroLED displays have a significant number of similar preferences that OLED displays have over LCDs, including improved shading exactness, improved complexity proportion, quicker reaction times, and genuine blacks – given both have self-lit pixels. So far we haven’t really seen a mass adoption of the technology, but hopefully things are going to change soon.

MicroLED is generally viewed as Apple’s next stage after OLED, which it right now utilizes for the Apple Watch and iPhone XS. MicroLED displays have a significant number of similar preferences that OLED displays have over LCDs, including improved shading exactness, improved complexity proportion, quicker reaction times, and genuine blacks – given both have self-lit pixels.

Nevertheless, MicroLED displays are more slender, more brilliant, and more vitality proficient than OLED panels. MicroLED displays likewise have inorganic gallium nitride-based LEDs, which have a more drawn out life expectancy than the natural compound utilized in OLED panels and should make them increasingly impervious to burn-in issues.

Apple’s enthusiasm for MicroLED was first detailed in 2014 when it procured MicroLED display manufacturing firm LuxVue. The next year it was found that the iPhone creator had likewise opened a cryptic lab in Taoyuan, Taiwan to explore display advances like OLED and MicroLED for future gadgets.

In 2017, the organization allegedly downsized its endeavours at that aspect, conceivably changing to an office closer to home: Apple is rumoured to have a hidden assembling plant in Santa Clara, California, where it is planning and delivering display tests utilizing MicroLED innovation.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is believed to offer help for creating littler structure factor applications, which could incorporate future Apple Watch models and AR wearables. Apple has likewise purportedly had fundamental talks with Taiwan-based organization PlayNitride over collaboration in the MicroLED market.

It will probably be a couple of years before MicroLED displays show up in Apple gadgets – maybe one year for the Apple Watch and two to four years for the iPhone – once MicroLED panels can be mass-produced in a reliable way. Whenever that opportunity arrives, Apple will probably outsource the mass production of the panels and Foxconn is plainly intending to get up probably a portion of the business if the present report is anything to go by.

The company’s earnings were propelled by its semiconductor business. However, Samsung Display division wasn’t as profitable as one would have expected. The company suffered a decline in earnings due to the weak demand for flexible OLED panels and increased LCD production by competitors such as JDI etc.

The global market leader also rolled out its plans for the rest of this year and one aspect that struck our attention is the detail about the launch of microLED TVs. Samsung had unveiled the 146-inch The Wall smart TV at CES 2018 with a modular design and a microLED display. The Korean giant only disclosed that the innovative product would be available this year without giving any specific timeline. Now, the document has revealed that we will be meeting with microLED TVs in the second half of this year.

The financial reports for Q1 2018 showed that Samsung’s earnings from TVs suffered a year-on-year decline and Samsung attributes this negative output to changes in the product lineup. However, the company is optimistic that the revenues from TVs will grow in Q2 due to the growing sales of new models. The company expects to maintain its leadership of the premium market by launching innovative products like microLED TV. The microLED technology is based on Samsung’s Cinema Screen technology, designed for movie theatres.

The Cupertino giant is working with TSMC in order to create micro LED panels for both small and large-size devices. The ones for small-size devices are said to be developed on silicon-based backplanes and they should be present in two upcoming devices from the company. We are referring to the next Apple Watch and an augmented reality wearable which should be a headset or something like Google Glass and Microsoft HoloLens.

The info comes from Digitimes Research’s senior analyst Luke Lin, who has also suggested that Apple is actually working on two sizes of micro LED displays. The one which we will see on an upcoming Apple Watch has a size of 1.3 to 1.4 inches, while the one for the AR wearable device has a 0.8-inch size. At last, there is a third micro LED display in development which belongs to a large-size device. It is said to be a device with a display even bigger than MacBooks. So, expect an upcoming iMac personal computer to sport a micro LED display.

RELATED: Apple’s New 9.7-inch iPad Fueled by A10 Fusion SoC Supports Apple Pencil

According to Luke Lin, the cost of these innovative displays are 4 to 6 times higher than the display of the actual Apple Watch. Further, the upcoming smartwatch will be the first such device to sport this display. The micro LED panel which is expected to be on the future Apple Watch is rumored to enter mass production in the second half of this year or in early 2019. Further, the mass production of the large-size micro LED panel is expected to begin in 2019 or even later. Luke Lin also stated that there is no info about the beginning of mass production for the small-size micro LED display which will power the alleged AR device by Apple.
