Ever since the pandemic became worse, people around the world have been staying indoors as much as possible. Even their shopping preferences have changed over the course of the last few months. A recent survey by Counterpoint Research on smartphone shopping in the UK, Germany, and Spain paints a similar picture.

Talking about the UK first, the online smartphone sales currently sit at ~35% in the country. According to the research firm, the online sales has moderately increased since Q1 2020. Above all, they sustained even after the re-opening of brick and mortar stores.

The survey revealed that 90% of UK consumers preferred to make their purchase from either electronic stores or supermarkets. That’s because consumers in this country want to experience the device in a “more engaged manner”.

Even retailers like Carphone Warehouse and Currys PC World are aware that consumers prefer buying from large format stores rather than smaller standalone mobile shops

That’s because these companies allow consumers to buy the latest phones without making an upfront full payment. They also provide options to bundle plan charges with phone instalments, in addition to direct debit options with offers and treats.

As per the UK consumers who participated in the survey, convenience was their top-most priority while shopping followed by probability of cheaper pricing.

That said, almost 60% of this survey respondents have a monthly income of less than £ 1600. More than 40% of individuals are planning to buy a phone from an operator are self-employed. Whereas, more than 50% of those willing to make an upfront payment are either homemakers or unemployed.

Germany and Spain

Unlike the consumers in the UK, those in Germany and Spain have changed their preference for buying smartphones to online by a high margin. 

For instance, the survey revealed that 35% and 30% of respondents from Germany and Spain respectively purchased their current phone online. Most importantly, a whopping 90% of Germans said that their next smartphone purchase will be online compared to 76% Spaniards, which is not a small number anyway.

Further, consumers in these two countries mostly prefer full up-front payment and retailers like Amazon, Media Markt, Saturn, Comtech, Fnac, Conectrol and Walmart.

As for numbers, 41% of Germans chose upfront payment in the survey and 42% of these respondents are salaried. The numbers for Spain is 53% and 61% respectively.

Last but not least, consumers who selected upfront payment earn less than €1,900 per month. They prefer this mode of buying because of cheaper deals and better offers.

Conclusion

Counterpoint Research says that ASPs (average selling prices) of smartphones will decrease as consumers are expected to reduce their budget. Also, going by their survey, most of the consumers will opt for a full upfront payment for their next phone to reduce a deferred liability.

Lastly, respondents from all the three countries said that they are not looking to reduce touchpoints despite they are concerned about the COVID-19 pandemic.

They’re fairly unconventional, but it’s possible the company can find some practical use for it. What’s interesting about these however is that we might be able to see them very soon.

Samsung has done this before  with foldable phones the last few CES expos to gauge acceptance, and those actually materialized, so the slide-out handset may be commercialized at some point, too. It’d be interesting to see if Samsung can push out their first sliding device before competitors like Xiaomi and LG come out with theirs.

Can mobile phones replace SLR cameras? That is a question.

SLR cameras can take photos with excellent image quality, while the mobile phones can share the photos immediately, which image quality is good.

One of the attractive reasons of the phone’s camera is its light and portable, therefore, manufacturers continuously improve function and image quality of phone’s camera. Last year, we could know how stunning the multi camera module, which realize the features of depth of field and 2x lossless zoom. This year, manufacturers make smartphones camera module supporting 10x zoom.

OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition and Huawei P30 Pro support 10x zoom, which are the flagship smartphone coming with their best hardware.

Now, we will do a comparison of OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition and Huawei P30 Pro. Let’s check out.

Most of manufacturers consider how to make sure that the phone’s design keeps slim and support long focus. OPPO and HUAWEI decided to adopt Periscope Camera with horizontal modules, which in order to reduce the phone’s thickness problem caused by ultra-telephoto lens.

Combine main camera, which is good enough to realize digital zoom, with good telephoto lens and amazing wide-angle lens, the complicated camera modules support 10x zoom feature.

When the zoom exceeds the limitation of the optical lens, and the two smartphones start wo turn on the mixed zoom, there are different image quality for the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition and the Huawei P30 Pro. In the 10x zoom factor, OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition is clearer than Huawei P30 Pro because of the higher sharpening. But if taking photos in the plain indoor condition, the over-sharpening will make the noise obviously.

Another difference between the two smartphones is color casts. OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition is blue cast. In the cloudy day in Shanghai, the blue cast makes the image hierarchically. The Huawei P30 Pro is yellow cast in the auto mode, which is general.

The Huawei P30 Pro has vivid color mode, which can make the images more colorful after turning on, and the mode will increase the automatic exposure factor, which can make the image brighter. However, if turn on the color mode when taking images in the scene of red subject, the color mode will cause the serious color shading, which is unnatural.

The OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition also offers color mode, which will make the images more colorful. But it is more cautious than the Huawei P30 Pro color mode. The OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition will optimize the contrast and saturation of images.

However, the color mode will make the image latitude lower, and there is a huge difference between the two smartphones. The OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition still keeps more dark details at the 6x zoom or 10x zoom factors. Although the image latitude performs generally, it is enough to shoot. While it seems that Huawei doesn’t care about the image latitude. Look at the Huawei P30 Pro 10x zoom sample below, the dark details are almost invisible. The sample of OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition still keeps some of details.

It also seems to be related to the automatic exposure orientation of the two smartphones. The telephoto lens and the wide-angle lens of OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition adopt similar focusing and photometric way, and the exposure performance is well. The telephoto lens and the wide-angle lens of Huawei P30 Pro have different focusing and photometric way. The wide-angle lens performs well, but the telephoto lens is obviously underexposure.

The underexposure can make the images taken by Huawei P30 Pro have higher contrast, but for those users who want to take more details will prefer the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition. The color shading problem can be solved by filter, but the images details cannot be recovered.

Actually, both smartphones perform not well in the focusing aspect.

Therefore, when the two smartphones turn on the telephoto mode, they will offer infinity focus way by default to save focusing time. This is a good way, because people often shoot scenes by telephoto mode, and the infinity focus way is enough to keep the image sharp.

Huawei and OPPO add OIS technology to increase the success rate of telephoto shooting. Actually, they perform well when shooting in daily life with digital image stabilization. Even in a dark room, it is easy to take clear images if you hold the phone stably.

The image quality at the telephoto will drop in low light, so both smartphones have night mode which is to improve brightness and sharpness with multi-frame compositing.

After the accumulation of several generations of handheld night mode algorithms, Huawei has more experience in dealing with urban night scenes than OPPO. For example, look the samples below, the detail retention and brightness of Huawei P30 Pro is better than OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition which opens night mode.

The night mode is not suitable for all scenes. Look at the samples below, they show the disadvantage of multi-frame compositing. It can show more details and clear the image, but the images appear stiff. The performance of OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition is more natural.

In fact, the Huawei P30 Pro’s performance is surprising at the telephoto if you don’t consider the night mode’s software algorithms. Its camera module of super wide-angle lens, wide-angle lens and telephoto lens shows three different performances. Look at the samples below, can you believe that they are taken by the phone in automatic mode?

OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition is more uniform, it provides the same exposure factor and color representation, and when manually turn on the night mode, the overall details and picture exposure performance has improved.

Overall, we believe that the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition is superior to Huawei P30 Pro in the telephoto with better resolution, automatic exposure and color performance. When both smartphones don’t be turned on night mode, OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition still has good images with detail retention, which is enough to shoot. The night mode of Huawei P30 Pro can bring brighter image in some of scenes, but it often shows some stiff images.

Conclusion:

Both Huawei P30 Pro and OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition are a reflection of the current progress in smartphone technology. Through the ingenious mechanical structure, OPPO and Huawei break the optical barrier and combine zoom with lightness.

Nubia Magic 3 smartphone was published on April 28^th priced at 2899 Yuan.

There are not so much phone manufacturers having a step in the gaming phone area. Nubia is one of the first batches, and Nubia Red Magic 3 is their third gaming smartphone. The features of the phone are not only the strong performance, but also the design, heat dissipation, battery life and so on.

Nubia Red Magic 3 comes with 6.65-inch OLED screen having the resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The gaming handset is powered by Snapdragon 855 chipset, and offers 6/8/12GB of RAM and 64/128/256GB of internal storage. It is fueled by 5000mAh battery with 27W fast charging.

Design:

Red Magic 3 offers four colors, which are Black, Red, Camouflage and Red/Blue, and we got the Black variant.

The dominant tone of Red Magic 3 package is black.

There are the features and basic spec on the package back side.

Because of the 19.5:9 aspect ratio, the handset is a bit longer than other phones. What’s more, the touch feeling is better with the transition processing of R angle.

As a gaming-focused smartphone, the screen of Red Magic 3 is incredible, which has 90Hz refresh rate, 1ms respond speed, DC dimming technology, HDR visual effects, and 87.7% screen-to-body ratio. The official says that the touchscreen polling rate can be automatic regulated between 120Hz to 240Hz combined with the practical application scene, and the touch latency is 40.02ms.

There is a front-facing camera, sensor and phone receiver on the front top bezel.

The back panel of Red Magic 3 is made of nano-metal with radium carving, and it is continued to use the X style and symmetrical design with diamond cutting technology. The RGB LED strip also makes a comeback on the new model, and there is a Red Magic logo LED light called Red Magic Eye, which can be always on or flickered. In addition, the air duct is changed to the camera module below and side.

The weight of Red Magic 3 is 215g, so the handset is not suitable for holding with one hand.

From top to bottom are flash light, camera, air duct, fingerprint sensor.

The new logo light can be always on or flickered, and the RGB LED strip can flicker when playing game, listening to music, charging and notification.

On the right side, there is the cooling hole, volume key, power button, and the two gaming buttons with U shape supporting all games.

There is an e-sports button, a SIM card slot, and an e-sports magic box interface on the left side.

The e-sports magic box interface is convenient for users to use 3.5mm earphone, charging cable and other expanded appliances. You can push the e-sports button to open the game mode.

On the top of the Red Magic 3, it keeps the 3.5mm earphone jack. I like it.

On the bottom of the phone, there is a speaker, a Type-C port and a noise cancelling microphone.

Performance

Nubia Red Magic 3 is powered by Snapdragon 855 processor and UFS 2.1, and the most important is that the phone has a built-in ICE 2.0 multi-dimensional cooling system. What’s more, the Red Magic 3 built-in a fan with forced air cooling. When you open the cooling fan, you can hear the sound of fans running, but the noise is controlled under 32dBA in the 30m.

According to the officials, ICE 2.0 possesses 32000mm total effective cooling area, 14000 R.P.M fan speed and 0.26CFM, which can make the phone core temperature lower by 18℃, CPU core temperature lower by 5℃, and the phone’s surface temperature lower by 3℃.

The Antutu Benchmark of Nubia Red Magic 3 is up to 396885, which is the top of the ranking list. The high score is benefited by the super cooling capacity.

When you turn on the e-sports button, the phone will get in the game mode which has network selection, gaming status, cooling fan, RGB LED strip and other options.

In addition, the built-in fan can automatically control and regulate temperature. For example, the fan will open at higher temperatures. And the fan will turn off automatically at the lower temperature. Of course, users can turn on the fan by themselves.

On the phone’s back panel, there is a RGB LED strip and a logo light. The strip will gleam when the phone is charging, playing games, listening to music and other notification. Also, you can change the lightning effect by yourselves. The Red Magic Eye can be always on or gleamed.

Because of the gaming buttons on the bezels and rear fingerprint sensor, the operation of tester become faster and more flexible especially in the PUBG. After experience, games are run at full frame.

Camera

Red Magic 3 comes with 48MP rear camera with IMX 586 sensor having f/1.7 aperture, and 16MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture.

As a gaming-centric phone, the camera of Red Magic 3 performs well. It’s worth mentioning is that the Red Magic 3 comes with Neovison algorithm, which supports ultra HD 8K video recording and 1920FPS 64x slow-motion video shooting.

Battery Life

Red Magic 3 is fueled by 5000mAh battery. The official said that the power consumption of running the fan continuously for an hour is less than 1%.

We tested the battery life by playing video continuously. After playing video for an hour, the battery decreased from 64% to 54%.

We played game for 30minutes with high effects and cooling fan, the battery decreased from 52% to 41%.

In addition, the phone charges from 10% to full in 85minutes.

Conclusion

There’s no doubt that Red Magic 3 is a gaming-centric smartphone. All details are designed for playing games, for example, the 19.5:9 aspect ratio offers comfort gaming holding feeling. However, the weight of 215g is not suitable for holding the phone by one hand.

The RGB LED strip and the Red Magic Eye make the phone more fantastic and e-sports style.

Red Magic 3 comes with 6.65-inch screen having the 90Hz refresh rate, and is powered by Snapdragon 855 processor. A few days ago, Huawei P30 Pro, one of the best flagship smartphone in the first half of the year, was released worldwide. Huawei P series is famous for its excellent camera module, and the DxOMark Mobile score of Huawei P30 Pro has reached up to 112, which is the best score till date. I got the P30 Pro a couple of days ago, and it was so exciting to test the camera.

So, let’s check out the Huawei P30 Pro camera review! In case you missed, we have already reviewed the Huawei P30 and the Huawei P30 Pro models separately. In this post, we’ll focus on reviewing its powerful camera module.

First, let’s have a look at the indoor samples.

These images were shot in low light and the sample with HDR mode turned on is noticeably brighter than the regular mode. The wide-angle image with the normal mode is also brighter than the normal image. Take a look at the second image, there’s a slightly purple cast. Although the brightness is different, the details are rendered well.

I do like the bokeh performance. I focused on the sashimi dish, and the background bokeh is noticeably good. So much that the sashimi looks delicious in the image!

At 2x zoom factor, the details of images still came out well. However, at 5x zoom, it’s not so clear. Actually, compared to the other images with 5x zoom factor, I think the dimly lit room didn’t help much with the amount of details in these samples.

Overall, the Huawei P30 Pro camera performs well in low light, and the HDR mode renders are brighter than the normal mode.

Look at the outdoor images at night.

Looking at the McDonald’s neon sign, the normal and HDR images are overexposed. Compared with them, the night mode image keeps the original color and has more details. What’s more, the control of noise reduction is better than the other two modes.

At 5x magnification, the detail retention and the color are good. The Huawei P30 Pro camera amazes me because of the color reproduction and detail retention, even at the 10x zoom factor. I find that this camera module can triumph over most of the flagship smartphone camera modules.

The sample below was shot in daylight.

Looking at the sky color, the normal mode image has a warmer tint, and the HDR mode is inclined to its original color. The performance of magnification is really good in ample lighting conditions. The Huawei P30 Pro camera is capable of capturing more details and keeping the noise levels low.

Take a look at the 5x zoom factor and 10x zoom factor samples below, the images are clear and sharp. And the difference between normal mode and HDR mode is in the hue and brightness. The HDR mode is brighter than the normal mode.

Look at the super macro sample. The image is taken in the close distance, and it still shows more details. The image is more saturated than in reality.

Selfies look nice too, and they are sharp and detailed. There are three adjustable options in the portrait mode, and I took selfies in the default portrait camera mode. Noticeably, the skin is smoother, the face is thinner and the facial color has a warmer tone. I like the portrait mode, but if you like natural and real images, you should take selfies from its normal mode.

The rear panel of Huawei P30 Pro comes with 40MP wide angle lens with f/1.8 aperture, 20MP ultra wide angle lens with f/2.2 aperture, 8MP telephoto with f/3.4 aperture and HUAWEI Time-of-Flight (TOF) camera. And there is a 32MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture.

Overall, I do love the Huawei P30 Pro’s camera module. The performance of zoom magnification, background bokeh, detail retention, and noise reduction is incredible. No doubt the P30 Pro deserves the number one spot in the DxOMark ranking.

Hey, its Adam again, Asian tech editor at Gizmochina and photographer with Kung Fu Imaging, here to introduce you to a new flagship phone from Xiaomi. Has Xiaomi made an iPhone/Samsung Galaxy killer with it’s “S” version of the popular Xiaomi Mix 2, the newly released Xiaomi Mix 2S? Or is the hardware/software package not quite up to those lofty heights? When introduced March 2018 in Shanghai, Xiaomi made sure to showcase the capabilities of the Xiaomi Mix 2S compared with the top-tier flagships from the big boys, however, we are going to look more closely, and rate the Mix 2S on it’s merit alone.

One thing I feel stands out at the beginning is the incredible, near bezel less screen design and ceramic construction. Although, the general design of the phone hasn’t changed much since last years Xiaomi Mix 2, the Gold edged Dual Camera is all new and worth taking a good look at.

What you get in the Box

The presentation is well laid out and, even a bit fancy with matte black box with shimmery lettering. Open up and you see a welcome message, open up past that and you see the phone on the left, with the included quick charger and USB to USB-C charging cable on the right side. Open up further and you’ll find some paperwork, and… Yup, a USB-C to 3.5mm dongle as the Mix 2 series devices ditched the 3.5mm audio jack. It’s a bit of an annoyance as the phone has NO weather or waterproof rating, so there’s little reason for removing the audio port other than following trends. We will all be wireless soon enough, however, so this is really just a minor adjustment.

Appearance

From first glance, this LOOKS like a premium device… and it is. It also looks nearly identical to last years Xiaomi Mix 2 in the front with the 5mp selfie camera on the bottom-right of the phone. The ceramic housing with metal frame is truly one of the best looking phones I’ve seen and the heft just FEELS premium in the hand. I’ve got a black version for review, and the device also comes in a nice shiny white model. The back of the phone is soooo smooth, and definitely attracts fingerprints and smudges quite easily. My tastes are a little less flashy, so using the included matte finish protective case gets rid of the shine and fingerprints, all the while flattening the back due to the gold accented dual-camera bump. I’ll share more about that camera later in this review.

With a somewhat compact body size of about 6 inches tall and 3 inches wide, with a minimal 8mm thickness, Xiaomi still found room for a massive battery. This battery will certainly help the 5.99 inch 1080 x 2160 18:9 form factor IPS LCD screen, with beautiful rounded corners, last as long, or longer, than many others with lower resolutions. Although I’d prefer an OLED display, I gotta say, the 403 ppi screen Xiaomi delivers below the Gorilla Glass 4 is bright, beautiful, and smooth in use, with little-to-no pixilation up close. I really like where, and how, Xiaomi placed the main headset speaker tucked in a small bezel at the top of the phone. It looks great, and the sound quality is seriously good. It even outputs a little sound when in speaker mode.

As this phone has no headphone jack, they make great use of the space with second speak… wait… nah… that space is taken by only the bottom microphone in the 2 mic Active Noise Cancellation that is common these days. The center of the bottom is the USB-C port for charging and a wired music connection and at the right is the speaker. I was a bit surprised at the quality and range coming from the single speaker port. Check this out… (Speaker sound vid.)
The shiny ceramic back of the phone has a single landscape orientation camera bump, trimmed in gold, that houses both rear cameras and a dual tone LED flash. In the center, about ¼ from the top of the device, is the fingerprint reader. I found the reader to be fast, and efficient and I used it more than the face unlock option, which I’ll go over later in this review. Halfway down the middle is the “Mi Mix Designed by Xiaomi” text branding in gold.
The left side of the Xiaomi Mix 2S has only a dual SIM card tray and there is no SD card storage expansion for this device.

The right side has the volume rocker and power buttons. Each of these are clicky and feel excellent to use, as a flagship should.

Hardware

The Xiaomi Mix 2S is going right to the top of the smartphone world with the MiUI 9.5 skin on top of Android 8.0 Oreo. All powered by a hardcore Snapdragon 845, which really beefs up the performance over it’s predecessor, the Xiaomi Mix 2. With industry leading 6 or 8gb of ram depending on the model (The 64gb and 128gb getting 6gb and the 256gb model getting 8 smoking gb) the Mix 2S should dominate the import phone market. My review unit is a 128gb model with 6gb of ram and, as you see here, it scored better than every phone but the recently released Galaxy S9… only losing out by a little. I’d imagine the 8gb version would sit right alongside, or above the best Android can offer. The performance of this device shows in scrolling through menus, super fast unlocking, be it with the fingerprint sensor or facial recognition, and taking any any app I throw at it with ease.

For all you chipset peepers out there this device has an octacore Kyro CPU and a blazing Adreno GPU. You get all of the best from modern connectivity you’d expect in a proper flagship including Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC with Qi wireless charging.

It’s excellent to have all of the hardware in the world, but if the software doesn’t work, your user experience will fail. Good news is that the Xiaomi Mix 2S designers paid attention to some well know fruit company and included a brilliant, and easy to use gesture system. To be honest, I was worried when I saw this phone doesn’t have a physical home button… But my worry vanished, and is making me want this style of interface on my daily driver. Swiping up to get to home, holding for a moment to get to multitasking… it’s just so smooth and natural! I really like some of the in-built animations, such as when swiping back and forth, you can see the page bending with your touch. Also, a nice touch is when deleting an app, the app kinda blows up. I like it.

If you aren’t a big fan of the gestures, you can still use the standard Android navigation system at the bottom of the phone but I feel you’d have to be a real android prude to not use the gestures. They made my experience better then without. No question.

There are some Xiaomi based customizations and options in the form of the MIUI lab and through a Mi account. With the lab currently offering the ability to learn more about an item just by touching the item on screen, and better gallery search options.

Setting up the Fingerprint scanner is simple as all you do is press your finger and lift it a few times and it’s set.
Setting up the facial recognition is quite similar. Simply place your phone in front of your face and it’ll take a quick scan. Then, next time when you want to unlock your phone, you don’t have to pick it up to access the fingerprint scanner on the back. I found the facial unlocking was pretty good, but not great… Especially in lowlight where it has some real difficulty. For the most part, I use the fingerprint scanner, but with enough light, the facial recognition unlock is speedy and fun to use. Additionally, I absolutely love the option to double tap the screen to wake, then the facial recognition takes over and near instantly unlocks the phone. It’s the best unlocking method, by far, on any phone I’ve used to date.

The phone was as expected from a modern super phone. The sound was crisp and detailed and others said the Active Noise reduction worked impressively, even when I was at a busy restaurant. Gaming is fantastic on the Xiaomi Mix 2S! Here are a few gameplay vids showing dynamism and fluidity only found in the best phones.

Camera

As a professional photographer, I’m quite excited for the largest, and most notable new feature to this “S” version of the Xiaomi Mix 2, the rear dual cameras. Both are 12mp with 1 having an f1/8 wide angle lens, and the other having an f/2.4 telephoto lens with a 2X optical zoom. There is 4-axis Optical Image Stabilization and even dual pixel autofocus. These should ensure some crispy and quick photos from a mobile device… But in practice, I wasn’t blown away. Let’s go over my experiences…

At the top of the standard photo mode, you have 5 options, flash, hdr, ai, filters, and settings/photo effects. The hdr mode does its best to try to optimize dynamic range by taking a few shots very quickly then using the shadow/highlight detail to make a more lifelike image. I find in practice it does add some range, but I think choosing the correct contrast mode will ensure more consistent images. More on that setting in a moment. The artificial intelligence mode is really a fine addition, and uses all of the phones processing power to scan a scene and pick an appropriate shooting mode be it landscape, portrait, or food. There’s actually 206 scenes and 25 modes that can be implemented automatically in ai mode. Pretty cool tech!

I’m really impressed with the sheer amount of customization available. Once you open the camera app on standard photo mode, you’ll be able to touch the top right corner to access the camera settings menu, along with a few photo effects, a timer, tilt-shift effect, straighten, group selfie, and beautify/beautify pro modes.

Let’s start with a few of my faves from the camera settings. I prefer the 16:9 ratio in the “camera frame” menu, although you Instagrammers may prefer the 4:3 choice. You can also take advantage of the entirety of the 18:9 screen for some groovy wide shots. Also, I prefer the “spot metering” option on the auto exposure settings menu and use the “lower” setting for Contrast so I can achieve the widest dynamic range and allow for greater flexibility in editing.
In video mode, you get the tome lapse and slow motion options as a secondary menu option. I feel those are better accessed in the main menu next to the video mode… maybe remove the “short video” mode. The settings here is where things get intense. Lots of options. Lots of new tech and codecs.

Of course this camera has image stabilization… but not in 4K. Here are a few examples of video, 1 in 4K and the other in 1080p with IS. Which do you prefer? I think the 4K capture looks great, and can benefit greatly from a mobile device gimbal to assist in stabilization, otherwise, I’d use 1080p, just for the 4-axis optical stabilization.
This is the first phone camera I’ve seen that can encode in the h.265 codec in addition to the h.264. H.265 generally offers better compression and higher quality video, but it’s not fully supported by many editing programs, so h.264 is the safer bet for most.

I chose the tap method for focus as I feel this is most intuitive. For time lapse movies, you get smoother videos at shorter intervals, but it takes up more space and speeds up the scene less. The longer intervals will move time far faster and can give a greater effect overall depending on your needs. This is a time lapse I shot using a mobile device gimbal to help in image stabilization. For the auto exposure settings, I chose spot metering again as it’s simple. Just touch on the screen what you wish to focus on and the exposure should be close.

The Slomo mode has 2 options, 240fps in 720p or 1080p. I didn’t see why anyone would choose the 720p mode… here’s a short video taken showing the travels of a fallen leaf… all in 1080p slomo.

The manual mode is pretty nice and useful when you wish to take full creative control over an image. It helps to understand how white balance, shutter speed, and iso work together. There’s no aperture setting option, so there’s no need to worry about it. I appreciate that if you take full control of focusing, there’s focus peaking to let you know what’s in focus. Not even my high end DSLR has that natively.

Now as to the dual cameras… the wide angle (or 1x) can focus closely, and with excellent precision, while I had some major focusing issues when in telephoto (or 2x) operation. The minimum focusing distance grows from about 4 inches in front of the camera with the wide angle to about a foot using the telephoto lens option. Here are a few shots showing the wide angle, then the telephoto in the same scene. You can see the cameras auto white balance changed when switching to telephoto mode, which, to me, gave a more pleasant image.

Low light images were not so bad if in wide mode due to it’s wider aperture lens, whereas in telephoto, the images muddied quite a bit. The 5 mp front camera seems to be a bit left behind compared to the rest of this device, and from many other phones on the market. It’s got a beauty mode that just does NOT look natural, and I don’t recommend it’s use unless you are at the top of Mount Everest and then, you’d take a selfie with whatever camera you have.

Final Comments

So did Xiaomi create the NEXT TOP FLAGSHIP?! They got extremely close, and if buying on value, this is certainly the premiere phone to buy at between 3000-4500 Chinese yuan. Its been an excellent few weeks getting to know this phone and it’s multitude of features that just make using the device a wonderful experience. I’m certainly looking forward to the next Mix phone to come as it’ll surely be killer!

The phone ships with a standard set of accessories.

Some extras include a 3.5mm headset jack adapter and a high-quality case that looks nice and fits the phone nice and snug.

DESIGN and DISPLAY

There is no doubt that the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is one of the most beautiful phones out there. The star of the show is a sharp, bright and vibrant 5.99” LCD display. It has 1080p+ resolution, 18:9 aspect ratio and it is covered with the Gorilla Glass 4.

The ceramic back looks really nice in practice and it is curved on each side for aesthetics and a better grip. If you add a premium aluminum frame and responsive buttons, you definitely feel that you hold a true flagship phone.

It’s obvious that the Mi Mix 2 can be complete smudge fest if you don’t clean it, just like most of the glass-made phones. But the thing that annoys me the most is that the device is very slippery. Yes, it sounds like a cliche but it is much more slippery than other glass-made phones I’ve tested in recent memory.

When it comes to optics, we are looking a tradition camera setup that has one 12MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture lens and 4-axis OIS.

Here is a minute of a few little but important features: the fingerprint scanner is one of the best out there, selfies can be taken using a 5MP snapper and there is a nice LED notification light. Keep in mind that selfie camera is implemented on the bottom right corner, so you would need to hold the phone upside down to take portrait selfies.

However, there is no microSD card slot and no headset jack but the supplied adapter assures a very good sound quality.

There is a pretty good sound system too that is provided by a stereo speakers setup.

HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

The Xiaomi Mix 2 is no slouch when it comes to hardware as it ships with top-shelf components that include a Snapdragon 835 chip, 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

You can also opt in for a more expensive model that has 8GB of RAM and whopping 256GB of internal storage.

As expected, the phone can handle 3D games without any issues. However, there is one serious software bug that prevents you from installing games that take a lot of storage space. You simply get an error message every time you try to download and install a game from the Play Store. I know this can be fixed somehow but this is what you will get out of the box. That’s really frustrating and hopefully, it will be fixed with a software update soon.

BENCHMARKS

USER INTERFACE

If you are familiar with Xiaomi phones, you will feel right at home since the device ships with the MIUI 8.5 that is built on top of Android 7.1.

My phone shipped with the original Chinese ROM, meaning that you would need to install Google Services yourself which takes about a minute to do that. However, you still need to deal with some bloatware apps. Also, an error message pops up every time I open up the Gmail app, which is annoying. We have all the same features and customization options Xiaomi phones have been famous for. You can tweak the phone in a variety of different ways, adjust a ton of settings and change the looks.

Most importantly, I can assure that the phone is fast and responsive even after installing a lot of apps.

CAMERAS

The camera app can take pictures quite fast. There a few shooting modes including a pro mode that allows you to adjust some image settings. There is also a slow-motion video mode.

The overall image quality is quite good but I expected better results from the phone this expensive. Obviously, you can take some good-looking daylight pictures but some of them could have more detail. Also, I got a few shots that were out of focus.

The low-light camera performance is okay but again, I expected better results from a $500 phone.

The 4k video looks quite good and 4-axis OIS does the job reducing the shakiness. However, I found that there are some video artifacts, continuous auto-focus is not always reliable and sound recording quality could be a lot better.

1080p selfie video looks great. Just bear in mind that awkward selfie camera position.

CONNECTIVITY

When it comes to connectivity, I can assure that the call quality has improved a lot over the original Mi Mix. Also, signal reception is great, Wifi works fine and the phone has Bluetooth 5 and NFC connectivity options. The GPS works exceptionally well. Finally, the phone has a bunch of sensors, just like any other flagship in the market.

BATTERY LIFE

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 ships with a 3400mAh battery that performs really well considering the size of the display. The max. SOT time I was able to reach was over 8 hours, which is quite impressive. If you use the phone more intensively, you should expect to achieve about 5-6 hours of SOT every day.

Finally, the supplied charger fully charges the phone in just over 1 hour and 20 mins thanks to Quick Charge 3.0 technology.

CONCLUSIONS

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is probably the most beautiful phone the company has ever made and it sure has a lot of flagship-grade qualities for a lower price than the mainstream flagships. Also, I love the Mix 2 for its display, the overall build quality, great performance and good battery life.

However, there are quite a few shortcomings. There is no microSD card slot, no headset jack and the phone is not water-resistant. There are also a few bugs in the UI that perhaps will be fixed with the future software updates. What | also expect from Xiaomi’s software team is to improve the overall image quality.

At the end of the day, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 still offers a lot of true flagship features for a lower price tag but please consider a few shortcomings before making a buying decision.

DESIGN and DISPLAY

The 6” 2k resolution display is just gorgeous and probably the best I’ve seen on a budget all-screen design phone. It’s really sharp and it’s a great panel overall. Obviously, the tradeoff is that the phone is quite huge.

A nice glass back, a sturdy aluminum frame and precise buttons add quite a lot of a premium look and feel, and it’s just nice to hold the phone in the hand despite its huge footprint. One thing that bothers me is a hybrid SIM card tray that rattles just a bit.

There is a beefy 21MP camera and 8MP shooter for selfies that is implemented on the bottom right corner.

Now a few features as quickly as possible: there is no headset jack, which is a shame for a budget phone. The device uses USB C port, there is no LED notification light, the fingerprint scanner is fast and reliable but the display could light up a bit faster.

The loudspeaker quality is not the best but it’s significantly better than on other budget full-screen phones I’ve tested.

HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

The Elephone S8 stands out from the crowd of budget full-screen phones because it’s a more powerful phone. The device has a deca-core  Helio X25 chipset with the max. clock speeds of 2.5GHz, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, which is not expandable for some reason.

Even though all the specs sound impressive, I found that the phone stutters in some 3D games on the highest graphics settings. I can’t say that the phone lags but there are quite a few skipped frames. The phone gets quite warm but it does not overheat.

BENCHMARKS

USER INTERFACE

Where the phone does not stutter or lag, is the user interface that is based on Android 7.1. Well, there are some weird translations like a whitelist. Also, the blue light filter is called a night light and you cannot adjust the intensity of it.

Other features like gesture controls work just fine if you plan to use them. My most favorite part is that Elephone preserved that stock Android look and feel and the phone is really fast, no matter what you do with it.

CAMERAS

The camera department is where the Elephone is also better than other full display budget phones I’ve reviewed. Obviously, the pictures are not perfect as some of them lack sharpness, the colors look washed out and so on but in general, the daylight image quality is decent considering the price of the phone.

The night images are not that good but again, the quality is a bit better than I expected.

Selfies could look sharper but I think that will look pretty good on social media.

What is frustrating with all these full-screen phones is that they can shoot videos only in 480p. Still, the videos come out quite usable for social media or video chats. Obviously, you need to hold the phone upside down both when shooting videos or taking selfies.

Another con is that the phone uses HEVC format for videos, meaning that you need to convert it before you can use it. I know that’s easy to do but it is an extra step for a budget phone owner.

The quality of the video is pretty good but the footage could look sharper and have more detail. The sound recording quality is actually pretty good for a budget phone.

CONNECTIVITY

The call quality is not bad but it could be better. I didn’t have issues with other connectivity options like wifi, Bluetooth or GPS. The phone has 13 sensors including a gyroscope, so you are all set if you want to use the device with VR headsets.

BATTERY LIFE

The phone rocks a huge 4000mAh battery that allows you to use the phone for an entire day or more. I could get about 6 or even 7 hours of screen on time even with quite a few apps installed and social media accounts that usually sync in the background.

It takes just over 1.5 hours to fully charge the phone with the supplied charger.

CONCLUSIONS

The Elephone S8 is the best budget full-screen phone I’ve tested so far. I just love its sharp 6” display, the overall build quality, the speed and fluidity, a great battery life and surprisingly decent cameras.

Obviously, you should consider the fact that the phone lacks a headset jack, there is no LED notification light, no NFC, no microSD card slot and the front camera shoots video only at 480p resolution.

If you can live with these shortcomings, the Elephone S8 is definitely one of the best full-screen phones on a budget.

As far as design goes, it has changed quite a bit if we compare it to the ZUK Z1.

Now we have a rather compact phone, which uses a very high quality and sturdy metal frame around the device. I love the fact that all the buttons and a dual SIM card tray are on the right and all other stuff is on the bottom. Thus, other sides of the phone look clean.

The sound quality from the loudspeaker is pretty good but nothing we haven’t heard from similarly priced phones.

Also, we have Gorilla Glass 4 on the front and rear. A great thing is that the phone has some sort of anti-fingerprint coating and it does its job very well.

We have a 5” 1080p display, which is nice and sharp but it could be slightly brighter for a better sunlight legibility.

An 8MP shooter is here for selfies along with a notification LED light on the top.

On the bottom, we have just one physical home button but it has tons of features. First of all, you can physically press it and it takes you home. Also, you can tap it and it acts as a back button or swipe it from left to right if you e.g. want to access your recent apps. Also, the button is highly customizable and you can assign different tasks. I have to say that this is one of the best home button implementations I’ve ever seen.

Last but not least we have a fingerprint scanner, which is accurate and it reads a fingerprint straight from the standby mode.

On the back, we have a 13MP shooter with f/2.2 aperture and a single LED flash.

Overall, the phone is well-built, it feels nice in the hand and it sports some flagship-worthy materials in the construction.

ZUK Z2 Review: HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

ZUK Z2 still sports some flagship-grade specs. It has a Snapdragon 820 chip, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of on-board storage without the microSD card slot.

As you may have guessed, the phone can handle anything you throw at it without a sweat. All the games ran almost perfectly on the highest graphics. However, the phone does quite warm on the top portion of the device but there are no overheating warnings or anything that could impair the performance.

ZUK Z2 Review: USER INTERFACE

When it comes to the user interface, there are two different versions. The one I reviewed like 8 months ago shipped with the Chinese ROM that had quite a bit of bloatware and no Google services. The one I have ships with the fully de-bloated ZUI rom, that is built on top of Android 6.0.

First of all, I love that the UI looks clean and it is fast and fluid. Also, there are some extra features and customization options. Besides the ability to do a lot of stuff just by swiping on the home button, you can swipe from the bottom to open up quick settings toggles, which are highly customizable too.

It would be great to have the Android 7 on this ROM but honestly, I really love it and so far it looks a lot better than the Chinese ROM.

ZUK Z2 Review: CAMERA

When it comes to the camera, we have a few shooting modes but there is no manual mode to take a full control of the images you take. Also, there are some basic settings to play with. In addition, the phone can take pictures very fast, which is probably the most important aspect for most users. Finally, the device triggers HDR mode automatically.

ZUK Z2 Review: IMAGE QUALITY

ZUK Z2 can take some nice looking daylight images with a good amount of detail, accurate looking colors and sharpness.

The camera starts struggling in lower-lit situations as the images have quite a lot of noise and less detail. Still, you can get some usable images out of this phone.

The 4k video looks really good for a $180 phone. However, the footage could have less noise and compression, and the green color of the grass looks oversaturated. See a video review for a video sample.

An 8MP selfie snapper can take some decent looking selfies for social media needs.

Overall, ZUK Z2 does not have a perfect camera but it is definitely one of the better cameras in a $300 phone.

I didn’t have any connectivity issues with the phone as the signal reception was good and the call quality was decent. Also, the Wifi worked fine and the GPS was accurate.

ZUK Z2 Review: BATTERY LIFE

The ZUK Z2 ships with 3500mAh built-in battery and it performs great.

I could constantly get over 5 hours of screen-on time on a mixed use, which involved using the camera, browsing the web, a bit of gaming and so on.

So, there you have it, ZUK Z2 after the buzz. With the recent price drops, I honestly believe that this is one of the best phones you can buy. Sure, it has a few shortcomings to consider but given the fact that it has really powerful internals, great and compact design, the ZUK Z2 is a fantastic offering for about $180.

The phone ships with a charger, some paperwork and some extra SIM card adapters.

DESIGN and FEATURES

For $20, you get a little phone that has the IP65 rating, meaning that the phone can survive some beating. Also, it is dust and dirt resistant and the device is splash-proof.

The Vkworld V3S is a well-built phone. I love the metal used on the sides of the device, which gives a little bit of premium look and feel.

The display is definitely not the sharpest out there but it is enough for such a cheap feature phone. However, the viewing angles are bad and it is quite reflective during the cloudy day.

The nicely backlit physical keys are tactile and they are nice to the touch.

One of the key selling points of the device is a dual-LED flashlight. However, I didn’t find it brighter than your everyday smartphone.

The loudspeaker is really good as it is louder than on most of the smartphones and the sound is quite clear.

USER INTERFACE and TEST NOTES

When it comes to the user interface, you should not expect to have lots of smart features but the phone gets the basics right. We have some essential everyday apps, music player, FM radio, calendar,  a few pre-installed games and so on.

Speaking of the basics, the call quality and signal reception are great.

Since you are going to use this phone mainly for the calls and other basic stuff, the battery will last you for days.

I could not kill this phone in 1 week using two SIM cards at the same time. Even if you don’t use the phone very often, the advertised 25 day standby time is a great feature to have.

CONCLUSIONS

So, there you have it, the $20 Vkworld V3S. It’s definitely not the phone for everyone since it was designed mainly for those who need just a simple phone that is well-built and it can survive a few drops and has just the basic features.

So far the phone has worked fine for me and I believe it’s worth the $20 price tag but I’m switching back to my smartphone as I can’t live without all the smart features it has.

DESIGN AND FEATURES

Honestly, this thing doesn’t even look like a smartphone and it reminds me of a smartwatch… without a strap.

We have a 1.54” display, which does not sport the highest resolution but it is pretty good for a $28 device.

The phone takes 1 SIM card and 1 microSD card for storage expansion as the internal storage is just 128MB.

We have just a power button and non-backlit capacitive keys to control the device.

On the back, there is a heart rate monitor, which measures your heart rate pretty accurately. Not sure why I thought I needed to put it on my wrist as it works with the fingertip too.

USER INTERFACE

As for user interface, you have your basic phone features. You can call someone, write messages and so on.

The call quality is not very impressive but you can definitely make a clear conversation.

There are also some basic apps like calculator, calendar, stopwatch etc. Besides the heart rate monitor, you can track your fitness routines using the built-in pedometer, which is pretty accurate or use sedentary reminder to reminds you to move a little.

You can also connect the Vphone S8 to your phone using the FundoWear app to track your fitness routines in detail, receive most of the notifications, use this little device as a remote dialer or as a remote controller for your main phone’s camera.

BATTERY LIFE

As for battery life, the Vphone S8 will get you through the day if you use it quite intensively. You may get a few days out of it if you are a light user.

CONCLUSIONS

So, there you have it, the smallest smartphone in the world, that costs just $28.

It’s definitely not the smartest smartphone out there but it’s definitely fun to use it. Also, it comes with all the basic phone and fitness tracker features, and a simple user interface that does not lag.

The phone may come handy if you just need to use another SIM card for calls.

At the end of the day, the Vphone S8 is not something I  really need for everyday use but it’s definitely a fun little device that works quite well and it is actually very cheap for what it has to offer.

The phone stands out from the crowd of affordable devices due to its bezel-less display. I have to tell you that it indeed looks great. However, the view on the very edges of the display is a little distorted to make that bezel-less look but I’m okay with that.

The 5.5” 1080p LCD panel itself is great. It is sharp and crisp, and color reproduction is good.

We have a 5MP selfie shooter along with the non-customisable multi-colour LED flash on the top and on-screen navigation buttons instead of capacitive ones.

Also, the phone sports a premium all-metal design with nano-injected antenna lines and great build quality. The buttons are nice and tactile and the phone feels very nice in the hand. We don’t see a side fingerprint scanner very often on budget phones but it is actually very convenient to reach. The scanner is not the fastest I’ve tested but it gets the job done.

As far as camera, we have a 16MP Samsung shooter coupled with a dual LED flash.

The loudspeaker is on the bottom and it sounds tinny as on most of budget phones.

You can put either 2 SIMs or 1 SIM and the microSD card in this hybrid slot. I love the supplied SIM ejector pin. You can just insert it in the headset jack and leave it there.

Ulefone Future Review: HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

Ulefone Future has some pretty good specs. The phone ships with an octa-core Mediatek Helio P10 chip with the clock speeds of 2GHz, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. These are pretty good specs for the price of the phone to say the least.

The gaming performance is good if you play games on medium graphics. If you set graphics to maximum, you should expect quite a bit of stutter and some skipped frames.

The bezel-less display design indeed looks great, the phone sports some great specifications, all-metal construction is premium and the phone looks and feels more expensive than it costs.

Also, we have a decent camera for daylight images, a fingerprint sensor and a fast charge support.

UNBOXING

The device comes in a compact luggage style case, which is made out of quality plastic material. Also, it is very light and portable. 

Once you open it up, you can find all the contents, which are stored very neatly. In addition, the inner side of the case is covered by a soft foam material for a better protection of all the contents. 

The star of the show is the battery, which is made out of rubberised plastic material. It is very compact considering that it has the capacity of 9000mAh.

It has 3 key features that include a power bank to charge any device, which can be charged via USB port, car jump starter and the flashlight.

The great thing about this battery is that it has a little screen on the front side, which shows the amount of juice left and some other info like the output of amps when charging a smartphone. 

The backside of the power bank is where you can find a triple LED flash, which can serve either as a flashlight or SOS light for emergency situations. Three LED lights are bright enough to light up a dark area, but would not replace your Maglight. 

On the top side you can find a port to connect jump start cable and it is covered by a flap. Also, there is a proprietary charging port, which is I think a bit of a let down since you have to carry a supplied charger and not your regular micro USB charger. On the other hand, you are getting both a wall and car charger with to make sure it is powered up all the time. But you may not even need these chargers at all and I will explain why a bit later in this review. 

Last but not least you can charge your smartphone via USB port at the speed of over 2A. 

On the left side there is a power key, which has a great tactile response. 

All right, we have to check out the selling point of this device as the battery is said to be able to jump start your car even if the battery is completely dead. 

The charging clips feel like a high quality material and would not break after a few times. In addition, the attached brick has a display to show you if you connected it to your car’s battery correctly or not.  

IS IT REALLY ABLE TO JUMP START YOUR CAR?

The ability to jump start your car, which has a dead battery sounds amazing on paper… and a bit unrealistic if you consider how tiny the 1byone power bank is. 

In order to make the test as fair as possible I tried to jump start my good ol’ 1993 Toyota Corolla since it has been left to die almost a year ago and it has quite a bit of rust and dust.

Literally, nobody has even touched it for about a year and I’m not even sure if I will able to wake it up from a death. Well, let’s call it a deep sleep and hope we can do something here.

HOW IT WORKS

What we have to do here is to connect a red colour positive clamp to the positive terminal and the black clamp to the negative terminal of the car’s battery.

Then you have to connect the other end of the cable to the power bank and press a little start button on the adapter. 

At this point, the jump starter has entered into the working stage for 30 seconds countdown and right now you have to go ahead and start your car. 

It works!!! It is actually quite impressive that this tiny power bank can jump start a completely dead car’s battery in a matter of seconds.  In addition, I’ve tested it a few more times on this car and on 2008 Honda Civic and it works as advertised. 

CONCLUSIONS

So there you have it, a neat little gadget, which can easily jump start your car or charge any USB powered device on the go. The amazing thing is that if your car’s battery dies in the middle of nowhere, you don’t need to call your friend to help you out. 

What is more, a great feature of this jump starter is that once you jump start your car, the vehicle’s battery fully recharges this power bank automatically in a matter of seconds. That’s why you don’t even need to bring any proprietary chargers. 

In addition, this device has all kinds of security tricks like spark-proof technology and reverse polarity protection, so you won’t harm neither yourself nor the battery in any case. 

Finally, the 1byone car jump starter is an amazing piece of hardware and I don’t see any shortcomings. Well, the micro USB charging port would have been a nice addition, but hey, you are getting both a wall and car chargers, and sometimes you don’t even need to bother about charging the power bank up at all. 

All in all, you are getting a multi-functional, lightweight and portable solution that, in my opinion, is worth every penny.

The Elephone Vowney release is getting ever closer and as the release date approaches, more information and news is being made available.

Today we have received screenshots showing the Elephone Vowney Antutu scores.

Given the phones 2k bezel less screen and Mediatek Helio X10 (MT6795) cpu clocked at 1.9Ghz, the scores appear to be pretty good, coming in at 57435 whilst looking at the Antutu numbers it may not be the most powerful of the current handsets, but it does represent good value for money and is currently available to pre order for just $299.99

We have today received a video from Oukitel showing the iPhone 6S Plus vs OUKITEL U7 Pro.

Surprisingly the blatantly iPhone 6S Plus influenced $69.99 (£46) Oukitel U7 Pro stands up quite well in the test, especially when you consider the pocket money price/performance ratio.

In the video Oukitel ask if you think the styling is similar to that of Apples iPhone 6S Plus, I would say the answer is pretty obvious to this, although the lack off visible plastic lines on the rear shell might suggest that it is plastic rather than metal, as the lines found on iPhones are their to allow the ariels to function through the metal rear casing.

Oukitel also show off gaming on the U7 Pro, if you consider the processor and the price of just $69.99, I would say it looks like its doing a great job keeping up with the graphically intensive driving game, however the iPhone does not appear to be running the game at full speed, this could be to do with the chosen car, as it seems a bit odd given the power of the processor under the hood of the iPhone 6S Plus that it would run this slowly, a better comparison would be to have both games running the same car on the same track.

Oukitel have also highlighted the Wi-Fi download speeds of the U7 Pro, something that appears a lot quicker than the iPhone 6S.

Personally I would like to run the tests independently to prove that things are as they seem, Oukitel if your listening I would welcome a test sample of the Oukitel U7 Pro to do an unbiased iPhone 6S Plus vs OUKITEL U7 Pro head to head.
