Apple is gearing up to launch the next-generation iPhone 14 series and with that, the company is set to introduce some major changes in the design of the smartphone as well as the phone’s features.

While the Apple iPhone 14 series is yet to go official, reports about the upcoming lineup from the company have surfaced online, revealing that the rumored Touch ID support for the iPhone isn’t coming anytime soon.

Last month, Apple was granted a patent for an under-display fingerprint reader, leading to speculation about the iPhone models to soon get the support for under-display Touch ID.

Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known Apple analyst, had reported earlier this year that the company could introduce iPhone with an under-display Touch ID in 2023 but now he doesn’t think that is happing any longer.

He believes that the next couple of iterations for smartphones, i.e. iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 launching in 2023 and 2024 won’t have under-display fingerprint sensor support and Face ID will be the only biometric option to unlock the device.

As for the major changes this year, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are getting rid of the notch on top of the screen for a pill-shaped cutout. The camera sensor is also expected to get bumped up from 12MP to 48MP.

It is also being said that the company is trying to make the non-Pro and Pro models of the Apple iPhone 14 series significantly different in terms of specifications. As per the reports, there will be four models getting launched this year — iPhone 14, 14 Max, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max. To know for sure what the devices offer, we will have to wait for the official launch set to take place later this year.

Initial rumors of the Galaxy Note 9 had revealed that it would be arriving with under-display fingerprint reader. However, since then multiple reports have claimed that Samsung has canceled the inclusion of advanced biometric recognition feature on the Note 9. Even well-known KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had claimed that the Note 9 will be arriving without in-screen fingerprint reader. However, a fresh report on The Korea Herald, a South Korean publication states that the Note 9 will adopt the in-display fingerprint scanning technology.

An unnamed has source has revealed to the publication that Samsung Display created three to four kinds of in-screen fingerprint scanner solution for the Samsung Electronics. Now both the entities are pondering on using of the one of the solutions. He has further stated that Samsung is yet to decide on the final concept for the Galaxy Note 9 because of the work related to the in-display fingerprint scanner. The company is expected to take a final call on the advanced fingerprint reader within this month.

In the past years, the design of the flagship phone was finalized around five months before its official announcement. The current rumors surrounding the Note 9 indicates that the South Korean company will take lesser time to decide on Note 9’s design. The source has claimed that the Note 9 may launch at the end of August.

Leaked information surrounding the Note 9 suggests that the Note 9’s appearance won’t be very different from the predecessor Galaxy Note 8. Like the Galaxy S9 duo, the Note 9’s Infinity Design is expected to arrive with slightly reduced bezels.

The Galaxy Note 9 is highly anticipated by the industry watchers to arrive with in-display fingerprint reader. Also, the Note 9’s fingerprint scanner is expected to be somewhat different from Chinese rivals like Vivo and the upcoming flagship phone from Huawei (probably not the P20 series). An official from the biometrics solution developer claimed that one of the concerns for Samsung will be low yields of in-screen fingerprint scanner enabled phones as it is difficult to mass produce such phones.

One of the reports had even claimed that it would be equipped with an in-screen fingerprint scanner. A fresh photo of the alleged real handset of the Mi MIX 2S has appeared today. It reveals that the handset it is equipped with an under-display fingerprint scanner.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S is expected to break cover as an upgraded version of the Mi MIX 2 from last year. The leaked image suggests the upgraded Mi MIX 2S may offer a higher screen-to-body ratio compared to the last year’s model. Also, it does not seem to feature a notch as early rumors had claimed. The following image that had leaked in the previous month Mi Mix 2s will come with Full Screen 3.0 design and it will feature under-display fingerprint scanner.

A recent leak has revealed that the handset may feature a 6.01-inch OLED display from Samsung. The screen is expected to support an aspect ratio of 18:9 and FHD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels.  Since the above image is not clear, it is difficult to see the exact positioning of the selfie camera. Some leaks have claimed that it could be moved to the top-right corner of the screen.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S will be fueled by Snapdragon 845 chipset. Its highest configuration model may feature 256 GB of storage and 8 GB of RAM. It is rumored to feature a dual camera setup that includes Sony IMX363 as one of its sensors. It is likely to house a 3,400mAh battery. It is pegged to come loaded with Android 8.0 Oreo flavored MIUI 9.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S is heavily pegged to get unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 later this month. A leaked specs sheet of the upcoming Mi MIX 2S to reveal information on its design and key specs.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S Design

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2’s full screen design was advertised by the company as Full Screen 2.0. The leaked specs sheet indicates that the Mi MIX 2S would be coming with Full Screen 3.0 design. It could mean that it will offer a higher screen-to-body ratio than the Mi MIX 2. The outline image of Mi MIX 2S suggests that it will be sporting slimmer bezels than the predecessor phone.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 has the front camera located at the bottom-right corner. The Full Screen 3.0 design of the Mi MIX 2S repositions its selfie camera to the top-right corner. The upper bezel houses a thin-shaped earpiece. The exact size of the screen is not mentioned, but the specs sheet reveals that it will be featuring an under-display fingerprint scanner.

As far as the rear design of the phone is concerned, it will be coming with a four-sided curved ceramic unibody. The front design of the phone appears similar to one of the renders of Mi MIX 2S (show below) that have surfaced recently.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S Specifications

The specs sheet claims that Mi MIX 2S will be the world’s first Snapdragon 845 mobile platform driven smartphone. The SoC is expected to be coupled with 8 GB of LPDDR4X RAM. It may arrive with 25GB GB high-speed UFS internal storage. Like the Mi MIX 2, the Mi MIX 2s is pegged to carry support for global 4G LTE bands. The specs sheet also mentions that it features 12-megapixel dual cameras with optical zoom.

The authenticity of the specs sheet is debatable since some of the information does not match with the leaked specs of the Mi MIX 2S that have been spotted in the past few weeks. None of the Mi MIX 2S rumors that have surfaced so far have claimed that it will be coming with dual rear cameras and in-screen fingerprint sensor. Some of the leaked photos of the Mi MIX 2S that had appeared few months ago have revealed that it would be arriving with an iPhone X like notch. As it can be seen in the image that accompanies the specs sheet, the Mi MIX 2S does not feature a notch.

At the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show, Vivo showcased a phone with an under-display fingerprint scanner. Most people focused on that singular feature and not the rest of the specs, not even the name.

Popular leaker Roland Quandt, did some digging and revealed that the phone is actually the Vivo X20Plus A, a variant of the X20Plus with its fingerprint sensor under the display. It turns out that the X20Plus A and the X20Plus UD from a few weeks ago are more or less the same device based on pictures of the latter that has now appeared on TENAA.

The Vivo X20Plus UD was first heard of a few weeks ago when it was seen getting its 3C certification. It was deduced that the UD in the name is short for Under Display – a hint at the fingerprint scanner residing beneath the screen.

According to TENAA, the Vivo X20Plus UD will have a 6.43” 20160 x 1080 OLED display. This is the same display size and resolution as the original X20Plus.

It will have 4GB of RAM, 128GB of expandable storage, and be powered by a 2.2GHz octa-core processor which is most probably the Snapdragon 660.

Just like its sibling, the Vivo X20Plus UD will have a 12MP + 5MP dual camera combo on the rear. Front facing camera will also remain a 12MP sensor.

However, the phone will come with a slightly smaller 3800mAh battery instead of 3900mAh. Its dimensions are also a tiny bit smaller at 165.2 × 80.02 × 7.35 (mm) but weight is now 183.1g.

The Vivo X20Plus UD is scheduled to launch later this month for ¥3698 (~$574). That is the same price as the original X20Plus with the same memory and storage configuration.

The Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2017 began yesterday June 28 and it began with a bang. BBK subsidiary Vivo took the centre stage when it showcased a prototype of its latest full-screen phone which comes with a spectacular “under display” fingerprint sensor. Photos of the device had first leaked a few weeks back with speculations that it would be unveiled at MWC Shanghai. The speculations were right after all as the company has now unveiled what could be a technology which Apple is tipped as planning to include on the iPhone 8.

The fingerprint technology is actually developed by Qualcomm as a successor to its ultrasonic fingerprint technology unveiled last year. Vivo happens to have provided the prototype smartphone on which it is first being featured. The prototype is a modified version of the Vivo XPlay 6 with the under display fingerprint technology located beneath the 1.2mm thick OLED display panel. The new fingerprint scanner uses Qualcomm’s new ultrasonic technology which sends a pulse through the finger, some of which gets reflected while some get absorbed. These vibrations are then detected by a sensor which builds up a fingerprint.

Apart from penetrating the 1.2mm thick OLED, the sensor is said to be capable of penetrating a 0.8mm glass, and 0.525mm metal which is a great improvement over capacitive fingerprint sensor. Capacitive fingerprint sensor cannot function effectively under wet hands and in dusty conditions. But the new technology is reputed to function well under wet hands or dust.

Qualcomm’s new ultrasonic solution will ship to OEMs in two forms. The Fingerprint Sensors for Glass and Metal will reportedly start shipping to OEMs this month and will only work with Snapdragon 660 and 630 processors while the fingerprint sensors for display will start finding its way into smartphones in the fourth quarter of the current year and will work with non-Snapdragon chip packing smartphones as well. This year we expected to see phones launch with fingerprint scanners embedded under the display. Sadly, no manufacturer has been able to pull it off. Samsung ended up putting the scanner at the back of the Galaxy S8 even after thinning out the front bezels. The Xiaomi Mi 6 has an ultrasonic scanner but it is not directly under the display or is it?

A new video posted on LeTV shows a Xiaomi Mi 6 that is unlocked via fingerprint by simply pressing on the display. Now that is weird considering that the Mi 6 has its scanner under the glass below the display. So how does this user unlock the phone using the fingerprint scanner and pressing on the display instead of swiping the scanner at the bottom?

The only logical explanation is that he modified the “hold down/press to unlock phone” message on the phone and replaced the message with a fingerprint icon. Some say he achieved this by installing a custom theme.

We have already seen a teardown video of the Mi 6 and we know it doesn’t have its scanner under the display. Whichever way, this is a clever trick and I’m sure he/she must have gotten some people confused.

Will we see a phone launch with an under-display fingerprint scanner this year? Maybe, maybe not. We still have another half to go.
