The budget smartphone market may be heading in an unexpected (or expected?) direction this year. According to a recent post from a reliable industry insider, several sub-brands of major smartphone makers are preparing to launch new devices in the sub-1,000 yuan (around $140) segment.

The surprising part is that many of these phones will scale back hardware instead of improving it.

The report claims that the upcoming budget phones will continue to use 1080p LCD panels and bring back the waterdrop notch. The entry-level memory configurations are also reportedly reverting to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard such news. A report late last year suggested that 16GB of RAM could become rare in flagship phones by 2026, while 4GB of RAM could become far more common in budget devices.

Blame the memory crisis, folks

You probably already know who is to blame. The biggest reason is the sharp increase in memory chip prices.

According to market research firm TrendForce, global DRAM contract prices rose by more than 40% for two consecutive quarters, from the fourth quarter of 2025 through the first quarter of 2026.

Another report from Counterpoint suggests the situation may be even more difficult. It says prices across the memory market increased by 80–90% quarter-over-quarter during the first quarter of 2026, with DRAM, NAND, and HBM chips all reaching record highs.

Xiaomi founder Lei Jun also said that the ongoing surge in memory prices has been “extremely aggressive” and predicted that prices across the memory industry could continue climbing over the next two years. He also suggested that users planning to upgrade their phones may want to do so sooner rather than later.

Not long ago, many affordable smartphones launched with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage as standard. However, as component costs continue to rise, manufacturers are rethinking their entry-level strategies.

If memory prices remain high, higher-capacity variants could become increasingly expensive, while budget phones may continue making compromises that many buyers thought were a thing of the past.

Last year, OnePlus claimed that combining a 2K display with a 165Hz refresh rate was simply not possible. OnePlus China President Li Jie explained that no display manufacturer had yet managed to produce a 2K OLED screen capable of sustaining 165Hz, and that 1.5K was the only feasible option.

The OnePlus 15 launched with that compromise. It has a 1.5K panel at 165Hz, and the company called it the industry’s best available solution at the time. 

But iQOO might change that narrative entirely.

iQOO Neo 12 could be world’s first to debut 2K 165Hz screen

Reliable Chinese tech leaker Digital Chat Station now claims that the upcoming Neo 12 is confirmed to feature a 2K display running at 165Hz. Even more, the device could pair 2K resolution with an 185Hz refresh rate. 

To understand why this is such a big deal, a little context helps. Right now, the best mass-produced 2K screens on the market max out at 144Hz. Anything higher comes at the cost of resolution, which is exactly the trade-off OnePlus made. 

OnePlus stated that “due to limitations in luminescent materials and circuit technology, the industry is currently unable to achieve the 165Hz + 2K specifications simultaneously.”

However, iQOO seems to have the engineering to back it up now. 

According to the leak, the Neo 12’s R&D team is not just targeting 165Hz. They’re reportedly experimenting with an even more extreme 185Hz tuning mode. Not that it would be the first 185Hz phone. Asus’ 2024 ROG Phone 9 Pro has an 185Hz refresh rate, but it only has a 1080p resolution. 

iQOO pairing 185Hz and 2K will be the screen benchmark, at least for gaming phones, of 2026. In fast-paced titles like tactical shooters, a higher refresh rate means smoother aiming, cleaner enemy tracking, and a tear-free screen even during rapid movement. 

On the hardware side, the Neo 12 is expected to come powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. An official launch is expected in the second half of 2025.

iQOO is preparing to launch its next performance-focused flagship, the iQOO 15T, in China. With the official launch just around the corner, the company has been slowly revealing almost everything about the phone. And from everything we know about the device so far, we can predict that the device is built for performance without compromise.

So here’s everything you need to know about the iQOO 15T before its launch. 

2K display with high refresh rate

On the front, the iQOO 15T will feature a 6.82-inch flat display with a 2K resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. The panel uses an 8T LTPO structure and BOE’s Q10+ substrate, which should help with smoother refresh rate switching and better power efficiency.

The display is also described as a high-end “Everest” flat screen with very thin bezels and a 2K resolution. 

The phone also supports advanced gaming features like 2K resolution combined with 144fps frame interpolation, depending on the title and optimisation.

Dimensity 9500 and Q3 gaming chip 

At the core of the device is the Dimensity 9500 chipset from MediaTek. This is paired with iQOO’s self-developed Q3 gaming chip, designed to handle heavy graphics workloads and gaming optimisation.

Together, the system is tuned for sustained performance rather than short bursts. iQOO claims the phone can maintain near full-frame gaming performance for long periods while keeping power consumption under control, even in demanding games like Genshin Impact.

The Q3 chip also enables features like full-scene ray tracing, super-resolution rendering, and smoother frame generation. In supported games, users may even get 2K resolution combined with 144fps output. The iQOO 15T will run OriginOS 6 based on Android 16.

As is common in flagships now, the iQOO 15T uses a silicon-carbon battery of 8000mAh. Despite the large capacity, the phone still supports 100W fast wired charging. iQOO also includes a system called Global Direct Drive Power Supply 2.0, which helps reduce heat when the phone is charging and gaming at the same time.

Cameras

For cameras, the iQOO 15T introduces a major upgrade for the brand. It will feature a 200-megapixel main rear camera, which is the first time such a high-resolution sensor is used on an iQOO flagship.

This main camera uses a large sensor and supports CIPA 4.5-level stabilisation, similar to what is found in some Vivo imaging-focused flagships. It also supports 4x lossless zoom, which should help maintain detail when cropping or zooming into images.

Along with the main sensor, the phone also includes a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera. On the front, there is a 16-megapixel selfie camera.

In terms of design, the iQOO 15T follows the styling of the iQOO 15 Ultra. It comes with a square camera module that has a transparent-inspired look.

The phone will be available in three colour options: Qingyun, Track Edition, and Legend Edition. It weighs around 216 grams, depending on the variant, and measures roughly 8.25mm to 8.4mm in thickness.

Despite the large battery, iQOO has managed to keep the design relatively slim for a device in this category.

The phone also includes practical hardware features like a 3D ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, a metal frame, and IP68/IP69 water and dust resistance ratings.

Price

There is still no official pricing for the iQOO 15T. However, based on its specifications, it is expected to sit in the upper-premium segment in China.

iQOO announced the iQOO Z11 smartphone in March. Two months later, we are hearing news of the iQOO Z11 Lite. The smartphone has now surfaced on Geekbench, giving an early look at some of its hardware.

iQOO Z11 Lite Geekbench run

The phone is listed with the model number I2510 and has managed 549 points in the single-core test and 1,776 points in the multi-core test. These are not flagship-level numbers, which is no surprise, since the Z Lite series usually targets the budget and lower mid-range segment.

The benchmark listing also reveals that the device is powered by an octa-core chip. Two of the cores are clocked at 2.40GHz, while the other six run at 2.00GHz. Geekbench also mentions the Mali-G57 MC2 GPU, which hints that the processor in question is the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset.

Interestingly, its predecessor, the iQOO Z10 Lite 5G, also uses the same SoC. Another detail shown in the listing is 8GB of RAM, and the phone is also said to run on Android 16.

This is not the first time the phone has appeared in the leak cycle. Earlier, the same model was spotted on the Bluetooth SIG database, where its name and 44W wired fast charging support were confirmed. It was also seen on the BIS certification site in India, which confirms that the phone is meant for the Indian market.

It was reported last month that iQOO has yet to finalize the iQOO 16’s primary camera and is currently AB testing 200-megapixel and 50-megapixel options. In today’s leak, the tipster stated that the engineering prototype of the device is equipped with a 50-megapixel primary camera featuring a large 1/1.3-inch sensor, paired with a periscope telephoto camera that uses a medium-sized sensor.

The tipster did not mention anything about the iQOO 16’s ultra-wide camera. However, it appears that the device may continue to feature triple 50-megapixel cameras on the back.

The regular iQOO Z11 is the more premium of the two, and honestly, the first thing most people will notice is the massive 9,020mAh battery. That’s unusually large even by current standards. What’s interesting is that iQOO still managed to keep the phone relatively slim at 8.25mm and reasonably manageable at 213g. Charging goes up to 90W, and there are a few extra battery-related features as well, including bypass charging and long-term battery health protection.

The phone also gets a large 6.83-inch AMOLED display with 1.5K resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. Brightness can apparently hit 5,000 nits in certain conditions, though as usual, that number likely applies to small HDR highlights rather than full-screen use.

Under the hood is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 chip, replacing the Dimensity 8500 used in the Chinese variant, paired with up to 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. Benchmark comparisons from NanoReview suggest the Dimensity 8500 delivers noticeably stronger CPU and GPU performance.

iQOO is also using a fairly large vapor chamber cooling setup here, likely because the phone is being positioned partly toward mobile gamers. The cameras are decent on paper, though clearly not the main selling point. You get a 50MP Sony IMX882 primary camera, a 2MP depth sensor, and a 32MP front camera with 4K recording support.

iQOO Z11x specifications:

The Z11x sits lower in the lineup but keeps a surprisingly similar overall approach. It swaps the AMOLED panel for a 6.76-inch LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate and uses MediaTek’s Dimensity 7400-Turbo chipset instead. Battery capacity drops to 7,200mAh, though that’s still a large capacity for a smartphone in 2026.

Charging is reduced to 44W, but the phone still keeps the IP68 and IP69 ratings. Camera hardware includes a 50MP Sony IMX852 main sensor, a 2MP depth camera, and a 32MP selfie shooter.

Pricing and availability:

Pricing in Malaysia for the standard Z11 starts at RM1,899 for the 8GB + 256GB version, while the 12GB + 256GB model is priced at RM2,199. The Z11x starts at RM1,299 for the 8GB + 128GB variant, while the 256GB version comes in at RM1,599.

Both phones are already available through the company’s official website in Malaysia. As part of a limited 10-day launch offer, the base variants are currently discounted to RM1,599 for the Z11 and RM1,099 for the Z11x.

Reliable insider Digital Chat Station (DCS) from Weibo shared a back image of the iQOO 15T showing the square camera module. The device, at least from what’s visible in the leak, borrows heavily from the brand’s Ultra series design language.

AnTuTu’s latest Android performance rankings for April are in, and not much has changed from last month. The same phones are at the top with iQOO still leading the pack with iQOO 15 Ultra. 

The iQOO 15 Ultra is the best performing phone for April with a score of 4,126,940. Close behind is the iQOO 15 with 4,102,621. Both devices rely on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage, and are tuned aggressively for performance with a good thermal management. 

Right behind them is the Red Magic 11 Pro+, scoring 4,098,742. It uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 too, but has 24GB RAM paired with 1TB storage. 

What stands out more broadly is the chipset split. Out of the top ten Android phones this month, nine are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Ultra Gen5. The only exception is the OnePlus Ace 6 Ultra, which uses MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500 and ranks sixth in the chart. 

Compared to March, the overall structure hasn’t changed dramatically. The iQOO 15 Ultra was already in first place then, even posting a slightly higher score of 4,174,911. Devices like the Red Magic 11 Pro+ and iQOO 15 were also present in the upper tier, though their positions have adjusted slightly. 

AnTuTu mid-range phones and tablets ranking for April

The mid-range, or what AnTuTu classifies as “sub-flagship,” tells a different story. Here, MediaTek has a stronger foothold. The iQOO Z11 leads this category with 2,323,047 points, powered by the Dimensity 8500. It’s followed by the Honor Power2 and Oppo K15 Pro, both also running on Dimensity chips.

On the tablet side, performance is increasingly mirroring flagship phones. The Vivo Pad 6 Pro takes the top spot with a score of 4,095,813. It’s followed by the Legion Tablet Y700 5th Generation and the Oppo Pad 5 Pro. All three use the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip. 

Looking back at March, the tablet category has seen a small shift at the top, with Lenovo’s Legion tablet previously holding first place. Now, Vivo has moved ahead, though the overall performance range remains largely similar.

The device is also expected to feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chipset. In terms of cameras, it could include a 200-megapixel primary sensor, accompanied by a 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens and a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera.

It is advisable to take this leak with a pinch of salt and wait for more reports to confirm the iQOO 15T’s existence.
