Meitu’s profits soar: Advancements in AI lead to success despite challenges in the industry

Meitu, the Hong Kong-listed tech company, has reported a remarkable surge in profits for the year 2023, tripling its net profit to an estimated range of US$46.36 million to US$51.98 million. This substantial increase, exceeding 200% compared to the 2022 net profit is attributed to the success of its new generative AI-based image and productivity tools.

The tools, namely “Action” for narrated videos and “X-Design” for creating graphics for product and service posters, have outperformed expectations in terms of user growth and subscription conversion. Meitu’s ability to monetize generative AI tools stands in contrast to challenges faced by major tech companies like Microsoft, Google, and Advanced Micro Devices, which have struggled to turn a profit from their own AI initiatives.

source: APP

This success has also translated into global expansion for Meitu, with products now available in 195 countries and regions. The company experienced rapid growth in subscribers outside mainland China, marking a significant milestone in its international presence.

Founded in 2008 in Xiamen, Meitu initially gained success with a selfie app for touch-ups. However, the company faced setbacks with unsuccessful ventures in the smartphone market and social media, as well as significant investments in cryptocurrencies. Despite warnings to investors in July 2022 about potential losses due to cryptocurrency market volatility, Meitu’s recent focus on generative AI has boosted investor confidence, leading to a more than 7% jump in shares upon announcing the 2023 profit estimates.

While Meitu’s shares experienced an 11% pullback recently, shareholders remain up 68% over the last three years. The quarterly performance saw a 27% drop in share price, causing concerns among investors. Despite these short-term fluctuations, Meitu’s long-term returns have been significant, outperforming the market by 67% over three years.

Meitu’s CEO, Wu Xinhong, emphasized the company’s commitment to understanding AI technology, including employee training programs. The total shareholder return (TSR) for Meitu shareholders over the past year stands at 41%, including dividends, indicating a positive trajectory for the business. As investors navigate the recent pullback, there is a call to examine whether the fundamentals align with the share price and to consider Meitu’s future outlook beyond historical profits.

Google Maps Adds Generative AI for Personalized Place Discovery

Google Maps is testing a new feature powered by generative AI, allowing users to discover places based on their specific needs expressed in natural language. However, this feature is currently only available to a select group of “Local Guides” in the US, limiting its accessibility for now.

This select group can experience the power of AI-powered place discovery, tailored to their specific needs and expressed in everyday language.

Google Maps Generative AI

Here’s how the feature works. Users can express their preferences using natural language in the Google Maps app, such as a motel for tonight with various dietary restrictions. The AI then analyzes Google’s extensive database of locations and will provide personalized recommendations with photos, ratings, and reviews. Users can further refine their search by asking follow-up questions without needing to rephrase their initial query.

According to Google, the system is designed to work “no matter how specific, niche, or broad your needs might be.” To illustrate this, the company shared an example involving searching for thrift stores in San Francisco, where users can simply inquire about “places with a vintage vibe in SF.”

You will then get the results that neatly categorized into sections such as clothing stores, vinyl shops, and flea markets. Each category includes photo carousels and review summaries, helping users understand why a particular place might be of interest to them.

Google emphasizes that this is a closed beta program, aiming to gather feedback from Local Guides before a wider release. The company says this feedback will help shape the feature and ensure it meets user needs effectively.

While the current availability is limited, this integration of generative AI into Google Maps certainly feels like a useful features for new travellers in new city and country. Once refined and made available to a broader audience, I can see it enhance the way users explore their surroundings and find hidden gems.

Samsung may re-release Galaxy Watch 4, Galaxy Tab S6 Lite in 2024

Samsung is tipped to re-release two products. This won’t be the first as the company has already done it in recent years.

The firm is said to re-launch a tablet and a smartwatch. The former was originally released almost four years ago, while the latter is nearly three years old.

Samsung Watch 4

The devices in question are Galaxy Tab S6 Lite and Galaxy Watch 4. This piece of information comes from reliable tipster Roland Quandt.

He says that the aforementioned products will bear ‘2024’ in their names. The branding goes in line with the previously re-launched devices.

Unfortunately, he does not reveal anything else other than the names. Anyway, we expect to learn more about these products in the coming days.

This will be Galaxy Tab S6 Lite’s second re-release. The tablet was initially launched in 2020 with an Exynos 9611 chip. It was launched again in 2022 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 732G and Snapdragon 720G chipsets.

On the other hand, the Galaxy Watch 4 was originally released in 2021. The 2024 edition will be its first re-release.

Currently, we don’t know whether the upcoming models will differ in terms of specs. We cannot assume anything as the 2022 edition of Galaxy S20 FE was the same as the original from 2020.

However, we are certain that there may not be hardware changes but the devices will definitely arrive with newer firmware.

Meanwhile, if you are in a hurry, you can get the latest Galaxy Watch 6 series from sites like Amazon.

Microsoft employee discovers a vulnerability in OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 that allows it to generate inappropriate content

Shane Jones, a manager in Microsoft‘s software engineering department, uncovered a vulnerability in OpenAI‘s DALL-E 3 model, known for generating text-based images. The flaw allows the model to bypass AI Guardrails and generate inappropriate NSFW content. After reporting the issue internally, Jones faced a “Gagging Order” from Microsoft, prohibiting him from disclosing the vulnerability. Despite the directive, Jones opted to share the information publicly, expressing concerns about potential security risks.

However, Microsoft downplayed the severity of the vulnerability questioning the success rate

Jones stumbled upon the vulnerability during independent research in December. He promptly reported the issue to both Microsoft and OpenAI. In an open letter on LinkedIn, Jones emphasized the security risks posed by the vulnerability and urged OpenAI to temporarily suspend the DALL-E 3 model until the flaw was addressed. Microsoft’s response to Jones was swift and forceful, instructing him to remove the LinkedIn post without providing any explanation.

Despite seeking internal communication with Microsoft to address the issue, Jones received no response. Frustrated by the lack of action, he decided to disclose the vulnerability to the media and relevant authorities. Jones linked the vulnerability to recent incidents of AI-generated inappropriate content featuring well-known singer Taylor Swift, allegedly created using Microsoft’s Designer AI function, which is underpinned by the DALL-E 3 model.

Microsoft’s legal department and senior executives warned Jones to cease disclosing information externally, but the vulnerability remained unpatched. Engadget and other media outlets sought an official response from Microsoft, prompting the company to acknowledge the concerns raised by Jones. Microsoft assured that it would address the issues brought to light and fix the vulnerabilities.

However, the company downplayed the severity of the disclosed vulnerability, stating it had a low success rate and could not completely bypass Microsoft’s security mechanisms. Microsoft also cast doubt on whether the vulnerability was related to the Taylor Swift incident, emphasizing the need for further investigation.

The incident underscores the challenges and ethical considerations surrounding AI technology, particularly in managing and addressing vulnerabilities that have the potential to compromise user safety and generate inappropriate content.

Realme 12 Plus listed on TENAA certification with full specifications

Realme recently launched its latest smartphone, the Realme 12 Pro series, in India. They’re now gearing up to introduce two new additions to the lineup – the Realme 12 and Realme 12 Plus. We don’t have all the details about these phones yet, but thanks to a recent TENAA listing, we’ve now got the scoop on the upcoming Realme 12 Plus 5G.

Realme 12 Plus TENAA certification

So, the phone got the green light from TENAA with the model number RMX3866, which matches up with the model number spotted in MIIT and other certifications for the Realme 12 Plus.

A quick look at the design reveals that the 12 Plus takes cues from its Pro siblings, sporting a large, circular camera island and a distinctive stripe running down the back. Likewise, the phone has flat frames and a teardrop notch display.

Realme 12 Plus TENAA certification

The screen measures a generous 6.67-inches and offers a full HD+ resolution (2400 x 1080 pixels) with an AMOLED panel for vibrant colors. There’s an in-display fingerprint scanner onboard for security. And while the listing didn’t spill the beans, we’re expecting the display to support either a 90Hz or 120Hz refresh rate.

Powering the Realme 12 Plus 5G is a 2.6GHz octa-core processor, though the specific chipset detail remains unknown. Users will have a range of RAM options to choose from, including 6GB, 8GB, 12GB, and a whopping 16GB. Storage options are equally diverse too, with 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and even 1TB configurations available. The phone is expected to run Realme UI 5 based on Android 14.

When it comes to optics, the Realme 12 Plus 5G rolls with a triple rear camera setup – a 50-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 2-megapixel macro lens. For selfies, there’s a 16-megapixel front-facing camera in the mix. Keeping the lights on is a 5,000mAh battery, though the details on charging are still under wraps.

With its TENAA certification complete, the Realme 12 Plus 5G might launch in China alongside the Realme 12 Pro series later this month. Pricing and global availability details are still up in the air.
