Meta faces Copyright Infringement allegations over AI training dataset

Meta Platforms, the parent company of social media giants Facebook and Instagram, has been accused of copyright infringement, leading to a consolidated lawsuit from notable authors such as Sarah Silverman and Michael Chabon. The crux of the accusation lies in Meta’s purported use of thousands of copyrighted books without proper authorization to train its artificial intelligence language model, Llama.

Despite stern warnings from Meta’s legal team about the potential legal risks associated with using pirated books for AI training, the company allegedly proceeded with the contentious dataset. The legal confusion gained further complexity as evidence from chat logs surfaced, featuring Meta-affiliated researcher Tim Dettmers discussing the procurement of the dataset in a Discord server.

According to the chat logs, Dettmers engaged in conversations with Meta’s legal department, highlighting concerns about the legality of employing book files for training data. The legal team reportedly cautioned against immediate use, citing issues related to “books with active copyrights.” Participants in the chat debated whether training on such data could be justified under the fair use doctrine, a U.S. legal principle protecting certain unlicensed uses of copyrighted works.

Originally initiated over the summer, the lawsuit was recently consolidated, combining two separate legal actions against Meta. Recent developments in the case include a California judge dismissing part of the Silverman lawsuit last month, prompting authors to seek amendments to their claims, indicating an evolving legal situation.

The implications of this legal battle extend beyond Meta, with potential repercussions throughout the AI industry. Success in these lawsuits could increase the cost of developing data-hungry AI models, as companies may face heightened scrutiny and compensation demands from content creators. Furthermore, new regulatory rules in Europe could compel AI companies, including Meta, to disclose the data used to train their models, exposing them to additional legal risks.

Meta’s Llama models, particularly the latest version, Llama 2, released in the summer, are at the center of the controversy. While the first version was trained using the “Books3 section of ThePile,” details about the training data for Llama 2, a potential disruptor in the market for generative AI software, were not disclosed by Meta.

Pentagon supplier BAE Systems secures $35 Million Grant under CHIPS and Science Act

BAE Systems, the American subsidiary of British aerospace firm BAE Systems, has been selected as the inaugural recipient of a federal grant under the recently enacted CHIPS and Science Act. The grant, totaling $35 million, aims to fortify domestic semiconductor manufacturing, with a specific focus on quadrupling the production of crucial chips utilized in cutting-edge defense systems, including F-15 and F-35 fighter jets.

The CHIPS and Science Act, greenlit by Congress in 2022, earmarked a substantial $39 billion in federal funding to incentivize the construction of semiconductor factories within the United States. The Biden administration’s decision to grant BAE Systems the first award underscores its commitment to bolstering national security by shoring up the semiconductor supply chain.

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, officially announced the grant, emphasizing its significance in addressing the “dangerous reliance” on a handful of Asian countries for critical semiconductors. The BAE grant serves as a strategic step in reducing dependency on external sources for sophisticated chips vital to military equipment.

source: BAE systems

BAE Systems, situated in Nashua, New Hampshire, will employ the $35 million grant to upgrade machinery, enhance efficiency, and decrease chip production costs. As part of the grant agreement, BAE has committed to workforce training programs, fostering initiatives at local community colleges to equip the labor force with the necessary skills.

Looking ahead, Secretary Raimondo anticipates the announcement of 10 to 12 additional grants within the next year, with a broader focus on advancing chip-making facilities in the U.S. The Chips and Science Act, with its $39 billion in direct grants and $75 billion in loans and loan guarantees, has catalyzed over $230 billion in private semiconductor investments, involving major industry players such as TSMC, Intel, Micron Technology, and Samsung Electronics.

This strategic initiative not only addresses national security concerns but also positions the United States as a key player in the global tech battleground. As more than 550 firms express interest and negotiations with companies globally intensify, the CHIPS and Science Act appears poised to reinvigorate the U.S. semiconductor industry, with questions lingering about the long-term sustainability of these investments.

Range Rover Teases its First-Ever Electric SUV in Stunning Images

The British automotive landscape is set to be electrified with the announcement of the all-electric Range Rover. A vehicle often regarded as the epitome of high-end SUVs is embracing the future with its zero-emission model, distinguishing it from its gasoline counterparts while maintaining its iconic design and functionality.

The Range Rover can wade through waist-deep water

Firstly, the aesthetics remain largely unchanged, preserving the Range Rover’s classic appearance. The electric version subtly differentiates itself with unique wheel center caps marked “EV”, a nod to its electric nature. This decision to keep the visual elements consistent with the internal combustion engine models is a strategic move to appeal to traditionalists who value the Range Rover’s iconic design.

Range Rover

Underneath the familiar exterior lies the heart of innovation. The electric Range Rover is built on the Modular Longitudinal Architecture, similar to its hybrid counterpart, but with an 800-volt system. It will be manufactured in Solihull, UK, with its batteries and electric drive units assembled in Jaguar Land Rover’s Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Center in Wolverhampton. This commitment to UK-based production not only supports the local economy but also speaks to the brand’s dedication to quality.

Land Rover promises that this electric model will be their quietest and most refined yet. Notably, it retains the brand’s legendary off-road capabilities, reportedly capable of wading through 850 millimeters of water – a feature more symbolic than practical for most owners of these luxurious vehicles. However, this capability underscores the Range Rover’s commitment to versatility and performance under any conditions.

The vehicle will also feature advanced noise cancellation technology and over-the-air software updates, enhancing the driving experience. The performance is anticipated to match that of its V8 counterparts, suggesting a powerful electric drivetrain.

While the debut date remains unknown, with pre-orders opening next year, this teaser has to get the blood flowing. It’s a public statement that luxury and environmental consciousness can coexist, setting a precedent for other premium brands to follow. The electric Range Rover will hopefully be a symbol of progress in the automotive industry, marrying luxury with responsibility.

Marvel’s Blade Game: Revealing Its Early 2022 Development Start and Impact on Release

Marvel‘s Blade, the upcoming video game from Arkane Studios, has been stirring up excitement since its announcement. However, recent findings reveal a surprising twist in its development timeline, challenging what many fans initially believed.

The company has made it clear that this game isn’t a newborn project

Contrary to the impression given by its December 2023 reveal trailer, Marvel’s Blade isn’t a newborn project. Evidence unearthed from Dana Nightingale’s LinkedIn profile, Arkane Studios’ Campaign Director, indicates that the game’s journey began as early as January 2022. This revelation sheds new light on the game’s progress and its potential release timeline.

Marvel Blade

The game’s early start in 2022 coincides intriguingly with significant events in the gaming world. It was about a year after Microsoft‘s acquisition of Arkane’s parent company, ZeniMax Media, and only six months following Bethesda‘s update on the Indiana Jones game. This timing suggests that Marvel’s Blade and the Indiana Jones game might be at similar development stages, despite the former being kept under wraps much longer.

This extended development period also dispels the notion that Marvel’s Blade might miss the current console generation. Historically, Arkane Studios has a track record of not announcing games in their early development stages. This practice, coupled with the average four-year development cycle of Arkane’s projects, strongly suggests that Marvel’s Blade could be well on its way to a release in the current console era.

Set in Paris, Marvel’s Blade promises to be a mature, single-player, third-person adventure. Players will step into the shoes of the iconic comic book hero in a game developed by the same team behind Deathloop and Dishonored. With Arkane’s reputation for crafting immersive and innovative games, expectations are high for this latest venture into the Marvel universe. As fans eagerly await further updates, the newly discovered development timeline of Marvel’s Blade adds another exciting layer to the game’s release.

Acer XV242F gaming monitor with 24.1″ 540Hz TN panel launched for 4999 Yuan ($696)

Acer is a reputable global technology company known for its affordable and dependable computer hardware, such as laptops, desktops, monitors, and peripherals. They serve both casual users and professionals, making them a popular choice for those looking for quality technology solutions at accessible prices.

Acer XV242F Monitor Key Features:

Earlier today, Acer launched its latest gaming monitor in the Chinese market, the XV242F, now available for purchase on JD.com.

This monitor features a slim bezel design with a 24.1-inch TN panel and FHD (1920×1080) resolution. Its standout feature is an ultra-high 540Hz refresh rate when connected through DisplayPort.

This high refresh rate, coupled with a 1ms (GtG) response time, makes the XV242F particularly appealing for professional esports players and enthusiasts demanding rapid and smooth visual performance.

The monitor’s TN panel is chosen for its fast response times, essential for displaying high-speed scenes without motion blur, a critical factor in competitive gaming. However, TN panels have some limitations, such as less vibrant colors and narrower viewing angles compared to other panel types like IPS or VA, which might be a consideration for users needing high color accuracy for tasks like design or video post-production.

In terms of color performance, the XV242F covers 99% of the sRGB color gamut and has an 8-bit color depth, producing 16.7 million colors. The static contrast ratio is 1000:1, and the monitor achieves a brightness level of 400 nits. It’s also equipped with two 2W speakers, providing decent audio for a gaming monitor.

The XV242F supports HDR technology and has been certified with DisplayHDR™ 400, ensuring a wider dynamic range and finer picture details, especially beneficial in HDR-enabled games. Additionally, it features AMD FreeSync Premium technology, which synchronizes the monitor’s refresh rate with the GPU, reducing screen tearing and stutter for a smoother gaming experience.

For connectivity, the monitor includes HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.4 ports, along with an audio-out interface. Its ergonomic stand design allows height adjustment, horizontal and vertical rotation, and tilt angle adjustment, catering to various viewing preferences.

Earlier this month, Acer also introduced a new gaming monitor called the Acer Nitro XV275UX. This monitor offers a 2K resolution and an impressive 240Hz refresh rate.

Tesla’s Massive Recall of 2 Million EVs in the US is a Wake-Up Call for Autopilot Safety

Tesla‘s recent recall of over 2 million vehicles in the United States has raised questions regarding the evolution of automated driving systems. This was aimed towards addressing issues with the Autopilot feature, and how the ongoing challenge of balancing innovation with safety is forcing manufacturers to tread a very thin line, especially with autonomous EVs.

The new update to Autopilot has better visual alerts and ease of use.

Autopilot, a semi-autonomous driving system, has been a key selling point for Tesla. It allows cars to steer, accelerate, and brake automatically within their lanes. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that the system’s driver monitoring methods were insufficient, leading to potential misuse. This recall, covering models Y, S, 3, and X made since 2012, is not just a technical fix but a critical step towards safer roads.

Tesla

The software update at the heart of this recall is designed to enhance driver engagement. It includes more prominent visual alerts and simplifies the activation and deactivation of Autosteer, a key component of Autopilot. These changes aim to ensure that Autopilot is used as intended – as an aid, not a replacement for an attentive driver.

Interestingly, Tesla agreed to the recall not because it concurred with the NHTSA’s findings, but to conclude the investigation. This highlights a complex relationship between innovators and regulators in the rapidly evolving field of automotive technology.

Safety advocates have long called for stricter monitoring systems, like camera-based checks, to ensure drivers remain attentive. Tesla’s recall reflects a broader industry trend towards more robust safety mechanisms in semi-autonomous vehicles.

This recall also raises questions about the naming of such systems. Critics argue that terms like ‘Autopilot’ can be misleading, suggesting more autonomy than these systems actually provide. The importance of driver responsibility cannot be overstated, even as cars become more technologically advanced.

This might be a pivotal moment for the automotive industry. Why, you may ask? It not only addresses specific safety concerns but also prompts a wider discussion about the role of technology in driving and the importance of maintaining a balance between innovation and safety. As we move towards an increasingly automated future, it’s crucial that these systems are developed and used with the utmost caution and responsibility.

With the iOS 17.3 Update, Your iPhone Becomes a Thief’s Worst Nightmare

Apple recently released the iOS 17.2 update. In addition to new features like the Daily app, the new version also brought numerous improvements. As always, the company has already started working on the next version after this process. In fact, today, they released the first developer beta version of iOS 17.3. Naturally, with this development, some new features have emerged. The most noteworthy among these features is the “stolen device protection,” which secures your stolen device. Here are the details about the iOS 17.3 update…

No Thief Would Dare to Steal Your iPhone After the iOS 17.3 Update

The prices of smartphones are increasing day by day. In today’s world, the prices of these devices, which encompass various advanced technologies, easily exceed $1,000. Therefore, our phones, which are valuable even as spare parts, are frequently targeted by thieves. Moreover, I’m not even mentioning the personal information they contain. Everything from financial management to our precious memories is stored in these devices. The upcoming iOS 17.3 update is aware of this situation and provides a solution.

iOS 17.3 stolen iPhone

Actually, iOS already offers a “Lost Mode” for stolen devices. However, in some cases, the information obtained allows bypassing this mode. For example, scammers can take advantage of users’ immediate excitement through simple methods such as posing as the police and saying, “We found your stolen device, let’s verify your password.” This allows them to reset the phone. Fortunately, “stolen device protection” will prevent this situation.

Thanks to the iOS 17.3 update, when the “Lost Mode” is activated, your iPhone will require biometric authentication for every critical operation. Logging into your banking app? Great, use Face ID. Want to reset your phone? Perfect, authenticate with Face ID beforehand. This simple yet effective method will safeguard your phone even in a frightening scenario, such as the unauthorized access to your personal data and phone. We will have to wait a while to use the feature, which is still in beta phase.

Samsung Registers ‘Expandable Screen’ Patents in Europe

Following the trademark registrations of the Flex Magic and Flex Magic Pixel in South Korea, these have also appeared on Europe’s trademark listing website, EUIPO. The two patents come along with a slight description, which confirms it is an OLED display for smartphones, AR devices, and other big display appliances.

Samsung “Flex Magic” and “Flex Magic Pixel” Patents on EUIPO

Alongside the patent name, the company also applied for a logo trademark that depicts “Flex Magic Pixel” text along with a square object in the center. There’s another patent with the text “Flex magic” and a similar object in the center.

These appear to be OLED display panels for video monitors, televisions, smartphones, wearables, smart glasses, reality glasses, and tablet monitors. Importantly, it is labeled as an “expandable screen for smartphones” and “smartphones in the shape of a watch”. Considering the description, we are quite close to the mass availability of the expandable display technology.

We have already seen several projects, specifically a Flex Note device that was put on display during the SID 2022 Display Week held in San Jose California, USA, last year. There’s another Samsung Flex Gaming handheld concept showcased at CES 2023. A staff was demonstrating the folding screen with the controller peripheral.

The appearance of the Flex Magic Pixel and Flex Magic trademarks at the EUIPO and South Korea’s Certification Agency confirms something special with an expandable display in 2024. AR products are already in line, but a new smartphone could come close to reality.

There could be multiple use cases for such expandable displays, as these may change the standard form factor of several electronic devices. It may be quite an evolution, especially for smartphones.

Below is the full description of the “Flex Magic” patent:

LCD large-screen displays; light emitting diode displays; OLED (Organic light emitting diode) display panels; digital signage; digital signage display panels; display screens for digital cameras; video monitors; video screens; smartphones; display for smart phones; wearable video display monitors; electric luminescent display panels; cameras; computer display monitors; flexible flat panel displays for computers; televisions; television monitors; TV display panels; video display screens for portable communications apparatus; flat panel display screens; tablet computers; tablet monitors; notebook computers; head-up display apparatus for vehicles; head up displays for automobiles; 3D spectacles; virtual reality headsets; virtual reality goggles; virtual reality glasses; smartglasses; smartphones in the shape of a watch; expandable screen smartphones; devices for the projection of virtual keyboards; head-mounted video displays.
