Baidu’s Ernie Bot takes China by storm but faces challenges in public debut

Baidu’s Ernie Bot, a generative AI service, has made a resounding debut in China, garnering tremendous attention and downloads. However, it’s not all smooth sailing for this innovative technology.

Ernie Bot’s public debut was met with an overwhelming response, with over 313,610 downloads on Apple’s Chinese iOS store and a staggering 2.4 million downloads across various Android app stores on its first day of launch. Users flocked to test the capabilities of this AI service, resulting in a flood of questions, a staggering 33 million within the first 24 hours.

The Chinese government recently lifted restrictions on several generative AI services, including Ernie Bot, as part of its efforts to regulate the technology. Other approved services include AI specialist SenseTime, Baichuan, founded by Sogou’s Wang Xiaochuan, and state-backed Zhipu AI.

Ernie Bot’s instant popularity was undeniable, but it faced difficulties in responding to specific queries and occasionally provided answers that left users dissatisfied. Screenshots of conversations with the AI chatbot revealed instances where it either failed to respond or delivered biased answers.

One notable example was when users asked which of the founders of Baidu, Alibaba Group Holding, and Tencent Holdings could be considered “capitalist.” Ernie Bot pointed to the founders of Alibaba and Tencent but conspicuously excluded Baidu’s founder, Robin Li. This raised eyebrows, especially given the similar business practices of all three tech giants.

In another test, Ernie Bot struggled to answer the same question, generating a lengthy Wikipedia-style profile of the three businessmen and essentially avoiding a direct response, even when explicitly instructed to reply with a simple “yes” or “no.”

Despite these hiccups, Ernie Bot’s rapid adoption and the sheer volume of questions it received underline the curiosity and eagerness of Chinese users to explore generative AI services. The 33 million questions it fielded on its debut day attest to the immense interest in this technology.

The technology’s approval by the Chinese government is a significant step forward, following the enactment of comprehensive regulations on generative AI just two weeks prior. Ernie Bot, along with other approved services, is now poised to shape the future of AI interactions in China.

However, the challenges it faced in providing accurate and impartial responses highlight the complexities involved in developing AI systems that can navigate sensitive or politically charged topics. As China continues to embrace generative AI, striking the right balance between innovation and responsible AI use will be an ongoing concern.

Vivo Y17s runs Geekbench with a budget-friendly processor

The Vivo Y series is constantly releasing new smartphones. Recently, the company introduced the Vivo Y77t in China with a Dimensity 7020 processor. The company also launched the Vivo Y78+ (t1) version last month. Now, another Vivo smartphone has been spotted on the Geekbench website, suggesting an imminent launch. The Vivo Y17s could be a new mid-range smartphone from the brand. Here are the details.

The Vivo Y17s, model number V2310, recently appeared on Geekbench, revealing some interesting details about its performance. In the benchmark, the phone scored 328 on the single-core test and 1161 on the multi-core test. This suggests that it will be powered by an octa-core Unisoc Tiger T700 processor and the Mali G52 MC2 GPU.

Vivo Y17s

The listing also shows that the phone will have 4GB of RAM (although the listing says 3.66GB). It is also expected to run Android 13 out of the box with a layer of Funtouch OS skin on top.

A recent BIS and Bluetooth SIG listing of the smartphone revealed it will offer 4G connectivity with Bluetooth 5.0. The Vivo Y17s’s release date in India is still unknown, but it is likely to be released in the next few months. Based on the name, the Vivo Y17s appears to be a refreshed version of the Vivo Y17. However, it is also possible that these two phones are unrelated, as the Vivo Y17 was released four years ago.

Like other models in the Vivo Y series, the Vivo Y17s is likely to be a budget-friendly smartphone with modest specs. We can expect a large display with at least a 90Hz refresh rate, as well as a 5,000mAh battery and a less powerful MediaTek processor.

Xiaomi users report they found browser hacking malware on their phones

Xiaomi users are making a controversial claim about the company’s smartphones. According to these users, their Xiaomi smartphones have malware named Mintnav installed, which purportedly hacks the Chrome browser.

Xiaomi-Logo

There has been no news about how this malware may have affected the smartphones. The user who first reported about it on Reddit writes:

Hey, guys I have recently seen on all my Xiaomi phones that my Google Chrome home page was changed to a site named “Mintnav”, be careful to change it, I didn’t find any documentation about this site so I think it’s a scam (a thing that I found to many time made by Xiaomi)

After catching the news, several users on Twitter/X also complained about it, with one even tagging India’s Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology.

When we attempted to gather more information about this purported malware, we encountered a lack of comprehensive details. A tutorial website, Howtoremove Guide, states “Mintnav falls into the category of browser hijacker applications, and although it may not inflict significant direct harm, it can certainly be a source of considerable annoyance and disruption to your daily web browsing activities.”

While users’ concerns are valid, it’s unclear how this unknown program made its way onto Xiaomi phones. We haven’t heard any complaints about Mintnav from users of other brands, so it’s possible that Xiaomi is somehow involved. It could be that this alleged malware appeared on Xiaomi smartphones after an update.

If you are getting this malware on your Chrome browser, you can remove it by going into your Chrome settings under “Homepage” and disabling the option or changing it to the default Chrome homepage.

New Leak Claims That iPhone 15 Ultra Might Be The Fifth Model This Year

Apple is set to unveil its next-generation iPhones as well as the Apple Watch series next week. The brand’s upcoming Wonderlust event is set for September 12 which is next Tuesday. Plenty of leaks and rumors have revealed details of the iPhone 15 series left, right, and center. Until now, the lineup was widely expected to comprise standard, plus, pro, and pro max variants. However, in a new development, a new leak reveals that there might be an additional model in the iPhone 15 series.

iPhone 15 series tipped to include a new model

Previously, there were rumors that Apple might ditch the iPhone 15 Pro Max moniker in favor of the iPhone 15 Ultra. In a new development, tipster Majin Bu citing information obtained from his sources reveals that Apple may introduce the iPhone 15 Ultra model. It will be the fifth variant in the lineup. The iPhone 15 Pro Max will pack 6GB RAM and up to 1TB of storage. On the other hand, the Ultra variant will max out at 8GB RAM and 2TB storage. Additionally, it will also feature improved cameras compared to the regular Pro model.

It seems that the higher RAM, storage, and camera improvement are the reasons why it makes sense for Apple to launch the iPhone 15 Ultra. The tipster also added that the Ultra variant could cost $100 more than the Pro Max model. Additionally, some case makers have separated the iPhone 15 Pro Max from the iPhone 15 Pro Ultra.

This is not the first time we are learning about the iPhone 15 Ultra. As per past rumors, it is expected to come with a titanium body, action body, dual front-facing cameras, and more.

It’s less than two weeks for Apple’s Wonderlust event where we will learn official details.

Meizu 20 in white color now comes in 12 + 256GB variant

Back in August, Meizu celebrated its 20th anniversary. On this special occasion, the company released its latest Meizu 20 flagship phone in white color.

What makes this variant of the device special is that it is currently the only smartphone on the market with white-colored bezels. In a world of black bezels, this product is refreshing.

Upon launch, the special color of Meizu 20 was only available in 8GB + 256GB and 12GB + 512GB memory configurations. Starting today, the handset also comes in a 12GB + 256GB version.

Meizu 20

The original 8GB + 256GB and 12GB + 512GB variants of Meizu 20 (white) are priced at ¥3,199 and ¥3,799, respectively. Whereas, the new 12GB + 256GB model carries a price tag of ¥3,399.

Till September 11, the mid and higher memory variants are discounted by ¥400. So their effective price comes down to ¥2,999 and ¥3,399, respectively. This makes the base variant costlier than the mid version.

Talking about specs, the Meizu 20 is built around a 6.55-inch FHD+ 144Hz OLED display. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip and draws energy from a 4,700mAh battery.
