Oppo starts Android 14 public beta program for Find X6 Pro, OnePlus 11, and Reno 9 Pro

Google is expected to release Android 14 stable this month. Thus, partner OEMs have kickstarted their beta programs.

Oppo is one of the first Chinese OEMs other than Xiaomi to announce the Android 14 public beta testing initiative. The company has included 3 devices in the first batch.

Two of these phones are Oppo-branded, while the third one is OnePlus-branded. Let’s go through the details.

Oppo Find X6 Pro (Review)

According to official announcement posts on Oppo and OnePlus community forums, the brands started recruiting Android 14 closed beta testers for three handsets in China yesterday. The registration window closes today itself.

Applicants will be selected within 5 working days from the end of recruitment. Selected candidates will receive the beta software via OTA update within the next 3 working days.

The following devices are currently part of the Android 14-based ColorOS beta program.

Interestingly, the vanilla Oppo Find X6 is not included in the first batch. Similarly, instead of the latest Reno 10 Pro Plus, the Reno 9 Pro is given higher priority.

Though the aforementioned smartphones will be added to the beta program later, it is just weird to not see them in the first batch. Also, Oppo hasn’t officially revealed anything about ColorOS 14 yet.

Since the Android 14 public beta program is now underway, Oppo may start teasing ColorOS 14 features in the coming days. Perhaps, the software could get announced at the Oppo Find N3 launch event later this month.

Tata Motors captures 72% of India’s EV market in H1 2023

India’s electric vehicle (EV) market saw a surge in sales in the first half of 2023, with the number of EVs sold doubling from the previous year. According to data from Canalys, a market research firm, 2 million light vehicles, including passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, were sold in India in the first half of 2023.

This is compared to 1.8 million units sold in the same period in 2022. Of the 2 million vehicles sold in the first half of 2023, 48,000 were EVs which accounts for a share of 2.4%. This represents a 137% year-on-year growth in EV sales.

Tata Motors dominates India’s EV market

Tata Motors dominated India’s electric vehicle market in the first half of 2023, selling 34,000 units and capturing a 72% share. The company’s Tiago, Nexon, and Tigor models were all among the top-selling EVs in India.

MG Motor and Mahindra were the second and third-best-selling EV brands in India, respectively, with 10.8% and 9% market shares. While Tata’s Tiago was the highest-selling EV car in India, followed by the Nexon and the Tigor, the Mahindra XUV400, and the MG ZS were the other two in the top five.

As per Canalys, MG Motors surpassed 10% market share in India’s EV market, largely due to the success of the MG ZS and MG Comet (also known as the MG Air). These two models gained traction in selected markets.

Mahindra also made a significant impact in the market, challenging Tata with its XUV 400. The XUV 400 secured a substantial 9% market share. Likewise, Citroen had a good showing with its eC3 EV, which achieved a 3.5% market share. This is a reflection of the positive market response to more affordable compact EVs.

On the other hand, BYD, a Chinese automaker that began delivering its Atto 3 electric SUV in India in early 2023, had a market share of 2.9% in the first half of the year. BYD had previously aimed to reach 30% of the Indian EV market by 2030, but its US$1 billion investment plan in India was reportedly withdrawn earlier this year amid India’s concerns over Chinese investments.

Hyundai also launched its second EV in India, the Ioniq 5. The Ioniq 5 shares the platform with the Kia EV6. Hyundai also announced that it will launch five EV models in India by 2032. Maruti Suzuki, India’s leading car manufacturer, said it will launch its first EV in 2024 and plans to launch six more models by 2030.

“Maruti is late with EVs, but its scale and ambition give it the potential to dramatically expand the size of the Indian EV market,” Canalys said.

“Despite increased competition in 2023, Canalys expects Tata to continue to dominate the market, with the Tiago remaining the most affordable EV in the market,” Ashwin Amberkar, Analyst at Canalys said.

Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro with eSIM support may boot Wear OS

A new Xiaomi smartwatch has been spotted online. The wearable officially goes by Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro.

This is the first time we are hearing the name. But unfortunately, the listing only reveals a couple of things.

Let’s go through everything that’s known about this upcoming product.

Xiaomi Mi Watch
Xiaomi Mi Watch (Review)

As per Xiaomiui, the forthcoming Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro with model number M2233W1 has been listed in the IMEI database. This means it has support for cellular connectivity (eSIM).

Thus, consumers will be able to use the smartwatch even without a smartphone. It should allow data connection and calls.

Looking up the model number, we found that the wearable was already spotted earlier this year by GoAndroid. Looks like it will be accompanied by two more smartwatches with model numbers M2234W1 and M2235W1.

Since their model numbers only differ by a single digit, they are most likely part of the same lineup. They could be collectively called Xiaomi Watch 2 series.

Sadly, we don’t have details on the specs of these smartwatches. However, going by a report from March, these wearables could boot Wear OS.

For the unaware, these won’t be the first Wear OS smartwatches from Xiaomi. Because the company’s first-ever smartwatch (Mi Watch) from November 2019 actually used Google’s platform.

These upcoming wearables will probably be positioned as the successors of the Mi Watch. Hence, the use of the marketing name ‘Xiaomi Watch 2.’

Apple iPhone 15 series might have surfaced on BIS

Apple is gearing up to launch the highly awaited iPhone 15 series soon. But prior to any official announcement, the company’s 2023 iPhone lineup might have surfaced on the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards), hinting at its imminent launch.

Apple iPhone 15 series India launch nears

As per a recent BIS listing, a new Apple device was spotted on the certification platform carrying the model number A3094. Based on the timeline, the model in question is likely a part of the upcoming iPhone 15 series. The Cupertino based giant is expected to release its flagship smartphones sometime next month. Apart from the model number, the BIS listing does not reveal any other finer details regarding the new iPhone.

Apple iPhone 15 BIS

Although, there have already been various rumors and leaks regarding the new iPhones. The Pro models are expected to launch with a Titanium chassis along with thinner bezels, solid state haptic buttons. Meanwhile, the base iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will get the Dynamic Island display feature as well as the 48-megapixel camera that was sported on the iPhone 14 Pro.

Another notable change is the shift to a USB Type-C port in the iPhone 15 lineup as Apple is complying with the EU’s regulations. However, the brand’s charging ports are believed to house a new 3LD3 chip that could limit charging speeds and data transfer. Meaning, only certified cables will benefit from the change in port design.

Xiaomi MIX FOLD 3 Unboxing & Hands-on: Unbeatable foldable phone so far

On August 14th, Xiaomi announced their latest foldable phone: the MIX Fold 3. And we got our hands on this phone today. When I watched the launch, I felt that it might be the most powerful foldable phone so far. So I wanted to unbox it with you guys and, by the way, talk about my first impressions of it.

Unboxing

Ever since Xiaomi partnered with Leica, its flagship phones have come in a black box with white text. The red Leica logo stands out here. Let’s open the box.

Once you open the lid you can see the MIX Fold 3, put it aside, and let’s see what the accessories have to offer.

Obviously, this is a 67W charger. It’s still quite a shame that this time it hasn’t been upgraded to a higher charging power as well.

The cable is still USB A to Type C with not much to say about it.

This black box contains the card pin, manual, and warranty card. Most importantly there is a free phone case. The case has a stand like the MIX Fold 2 to hold your phone up. But the material is just plastic instead of vegan leather. That’s all the accessories for the MIX Fold 3.

Hands-on

Fortunately, we got our hands on the rarest version of the MIX Fold 3: the Dragon Scale Fiber Edition, a composite material made of ceramic and aramid fibers, which Xiaomi says it used on the Fold 3 because it’s light enough and more resistant to drops. It feels similar to the carbon fiber material. It’s a good try, at least this material looks more suitable for a flagship phone back panel than vegan leather.

Perhaps Xiaomi thought the raised camera module on the Xiaomi 13 Ultra worked so well that a similar design was followed on the Fold 3. There’s also a gold line on the hinge, much like that Coachline on the Rolls-Royce, a symbol of uncompromising craftsmanship, which I quite like. I think the design is an improvement on the MIX Fold 3.

The Fold 3 is about the same size as the Fold 2. The most noticeable change is that the frame has gotten flat. When I used to use Fold 2, unfolding it tended to slip out of my hand. But it opens easily on Fold 3.

Even though the camera module on the MIX Fold 3 has gotten bigger, the weight and thickness have been reduced. The reason is this newly upgraded hinge. Not only does this hinge make the creases lighter and protect the screen better, but it finally makes it possible to unfold and stop the MIX Fold 3 at any angle even this thin. This would be the biggest upgrade of the third generation over the second I think.

There’s one other place where the upgrades are also huge, and that’s the camera. This would be the first time I’ve seen four cameras on a foldable phone, meaning that it wins over all foldable phones in terms of focal length coverage. While we haven’t taken enough photos to tell you just how good it is, it should not disappoint us in terms of specs.

Since we just got this phone not long ago, we don’t know enough about it yet. We will post an in-depth REVIEW of it after I’ve used it for a while. Also, there’s a FULL REVIEW of the Redmi K60 Ultra that we’ll be doing as well. Remember to subscribe to our YouTube channel to be the first to see the latest videos.

Note that the Mix Fold3 won’t launch outside of China but you can get it from retailers like Giztop right now.

Oppo Find N3 Flip Geekbench listing reveals Dimensity 9200

Oppo is expected to announce the Find N3 Flip on Aug. 29 in China. It will announce the Find N2 Flip, which debuted in the home market in December 2022. A Geekbench listing of the device has appeared, along with the SoC of the device.

As can be seen in the Geekbench screenshot, the Find N3 Flip has been spotted with the PHT110 model number. The CPU and GPU details mentioned in the listing confirm that the device is powered by the Dimensity 9200 chip. It is the same chip that powers the likes of the Vivo X90, X90 Pro, and OPPO Find X6.

The Geekbench listing further states that the device is equipped with 12 GB of RAM and runs on Android 13. As per reports, the device will also arrive in a 16 GB RAM variant and offer a ColorOS 13.1 experience. The device scored 1367 points in the single-core and 4168 points in the multi-core tests of Geekbench, respectively.

The camera department will receive a major upgrade on the Find N3 Flip. It will feature a redesigned round camera module, which will house an OIS-enabled 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 primary camera, which will be paired with an IMX581 48-megapixel ultra-wide lens and an IMX709 32-megapixel telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom. Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 will not release outside of China

Earlier this week, Xiaomi unveiled the Xiaomi MIX Fold 3 in China. As the moniker of the device suggests, it is the third-generation foldable phone from the brand. The original Mix Fold and the Mix Fold 2 have remained exclusive to the Chinese market. So, will the Mix Fold 3 released in the global market? Here’s what Daniel Desjarlais, the Communications Director for Xiaomi, said about it.

As reports had previously claimed, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 will remain exclusive to the Chinese market. Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola have been consistently launching foldable phones for a couple of years. Tecno released its first Phantom V Fold foldable phone this year in multiple markets. OPPO released the Find N2 Flip in different markets, and there are rumors that it will launch the Find N3 soon in the global market.

OnePlus is also expected to enter the foldable market next month (September) with the launch of the OnePlus Open. On Sept. 1, Honor will announce the Honor Magic V2 and another foldable phone in the global market. It seems that Xiaomi may enter the global foldable phone market in 2024.

Meanwhile, the Mix Fold 3 is already available for purchase in China. People who are outside of China can visit Giztop, our online store, and pre-order it for $1,599. The device is listed in three shades, such as black, black fibre, and gold. At present, Giztop is offering the device in three configurations: 12 GB RAM + 256 GB storage, 16 GB RAM + 512 GB storage, and 16 GB RAM + 1 TB storage. Giztop will start shipping the device on Aug. 26.

Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 specifications

The Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 has an 8.03-inch foldable LTPO AMOLED display that offers 1916 x 2160 pixels and a 6.56-inch AMOLED cover screen that supports 1080 x 2520 pixels. Both screens offer a 120Hz refresh rate. For security, it has a side-facing fingerprint sensor, and the device runs on the MIUI 14-based Android 13.

The Mix Fold has a 20-megapixel front camera and a 20-megapixel internal camera. Its rear panel has a Lecia-optimized 50-megapixel main camera with OIS support, a 10-megapixel telephoto snapper with OIS and 3.2x optical zoom, a 10-megapixel periscope zoom camera with OIS and 5x optical zoom, and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens.

The 3.36GHz Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip powers the Mix Fold 3. It comes with LPDDR5x RAM, UFS 4.0 storage, and a 4,800mAh battery. The phone supports 67W wired and 50W wireless charging.

Apple’s New Watch Update is a Game Changer in Parkinson’s Care

Apple has taken a step forward in its commitment to healthcare by releasing an update to watchOS 9.6.1, aimed specifically at addressing the needs of those suffering from Parkinson’s disease. While updates for Apple Watch are regular, this one stands out by ensuring the efficient tracking of tremors and dyskinesia symptoms.

The new update enables continuous tracking of symptoms for Parkinson’s patients

The importance of this update lies in its impact on medical treatment. H20 Therapeutics’ app, Parky, which leverages Apple’s Movement Disorder API, had been hindered by an issue that prevented access to motion data. The new update fixes this issue, allowing the app to capture changes in the symptoms of Parkinson’s patients, matching the expectations of clinicians 94% of the time.

This not only highlights Apple’s role in health and wellness but also stresses the significance of technology in aiding medical professionals in their diagnosis and treatment plans. Before the fix, the inability to access the Movement Disorder API resulted in a gap in vital information for doctors. This update now ensures continuous tracking, with Parky capturing 288 data points daily, assuming continuous wear of the watch.

The introduction of a color-based UI using green to indicate fewer symptoms further simplifies understanding for patients and caregivers. This update is not just about enhancing functionality; it’s a reflection of Apple’s conscious effort to contribute to healthcare and wellness. An update procedure that only requires the watch to be charged to 50% and within Wi-Fi range ensures that this improvement is easily accessible to all eligible Apple Watch users.

Snapchat’s AI Assistant Posted a Story – and Then Deleted it

Snapchat Plus users were thrown into confusion recently when the app’s digital assistant, My AI, began to act erratically. During a bizarre event, My AI, part of the $3.99/month Snapchat Plus package, took it upon itself to post single-second-long Stories to users’ feeds, a function it was never programmed to have.

This small incident left Snapchat users wondering if AI is becoming sentient

The mysterious two-tone image posted in Stories by the chatbot left users scratching their heads. Some even mistook it for a snapshot of their ceiling. When asked about the incident, My AI either went silent or acknowledged a technical issue.

Snap

This unexpected behavior prompted jokes and minor panic among users, leading them to wonder if this was a sign of AI’s burgeoning self-awareness. While the idea of the dawning of the Singularity was certainly thrilling for some, it was soon clarified by a spokesperson that it was merely a temporary glitch.

What makes this incident particularly interesting is the intrigue it stirred. My AI offers an array of features, including AR filter recommendations, suggestions for restaurants and activities, and various AI functionalities. The technical malfunction gave users a sneak peek, albeit unintended, into the potential capabilities of AI.

The Academia community is Slowly Leaving X, Claiming it is Unusable

Emilia Jarochowska, once an avid user of the platform formerly known as Twitter, closed her account due to the unsettling rise in trolls and misinformation. Her departure represents a growing trend among academics who have found the recent changes to the platform, now simply known as “X,” unusable.

Twitter has been on a steady downhill curve ever since Elon Musk took over

Since Elon Musk took over Twitter, he has implemented numerous unpopular changes. Content moderation has been reduced, and a new verification system favoring paid members has been established. Limited access to data for research and changes to the platform’s name and logo have left many in the scientific community reassessing their use of the platform.

X Twitter

Nature’s survey reached out to over 170,000 scientists and found that more than half have reduced their time on X, while roughly 7% have abandoned it altogether. Around 46% have sought refuge in alternative social media platforms such as Mastodon, Bluesky, Threads, and TikTok.

The shifting social media landscape has raised concerns about the fragmentation of scientific communication. As researchers move from platform to platform, following specific communities and individuals, the ease of access to targeted information is lost.

Some, like Žiga Malek, an environmental scientist, will continue using X, despite the chaos, to promote his work. Others lament what’s being lost, particularly the sense of community and open access to data that Twitter once offered.

Whether X will regain its appeal or if another platform will take its place is uncertain. Meanwhile, experts like Mark Carrigan, a digital sociologist, urge conventional networking organizations to take this opportunity to curate and support their networks, declaring that Twitter, as we knew it, is dead.

Oppo Watch 4 Pro key features officially confirmed, likely to launch on August 29

Rumors are rife that the Oppo Find N3 Flip will be announced on Aug. 29 in China. Since the company has already started teasing the Watch 4 Pro, it appears that the smartwatch will debut alongside the N3 Flip. In a new Weibo post, the company published a couple of posters to confirm the key specifications of its next flagship smartwatch.

Oppo Watch 4 Pro key specifications

The new posters confirm that the Oppo Watch 4 Pro will be equipped with dual chipsets, such as the Snapdragon W5 chip and the BES 2700. The latter could be present mainly for a low-power mode.

The Watch 4 Pro features an LTPO always-on display that remains active even when the wrist is down, unlike typical smartwatches with black and white displays. Unlike other smartwatches, the Watch 4 offers a full-color always-on display (AOD) instead of a black-and-white AOD.

The Watch 4 Pro promises to deliver accurate health tracking data thanks to the inclusion of high-precision sensors. It includes an 8-channel heart rate sensor, a 16-channel blood oxygen sensor, a wrist temperature sensor, and an ECG sensor.

The Watch 4 Pro promises to offer an experience similar to that of a smartphone as it is equipped with 85+ standalone preinstalled apps. In addition, the smartwatch offers 2 GB of operational memory, enabling a data transfer rate of 4.2GB/s. Notably, the screen response time has been improved from 922ms to 770ms, while the heart rate application’s launch speed has been reduced from 572ms to 246ms, and the sports application’s startup time has been shortened from 594ms to 207ms.

Other reports have revealed that the Watch 4 Pro will pack a 570mAh battery. When it comes to design, it will come equipped with a 316 stainless-steel frame and a ceramic base. It is also expected to come with eSIM support.
